Juvenelian Satire in A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift...
Effectively ushering change in society or pointing out faults that have existed and gone unnoticed can
be a daunting task for any social commentator. Often, blandly protesting grievances or concerns can
fall upon deaf ears and change can be slow or non existent. However, Jonathan Swift in his pamphlet
A Modest Proposal, uses clever, targeted, and ironic criticism to bring the social state of Ireland to the
attention of indolent aristocrats. He accomplishes such criticism through satire, specifically Juvenalian
satire. Swift s A Modest Proposal stands as an example of the type of satire that plays upon the
audience s emotion by creating anger concerning the indifference of the voice created. He
complements such criticism with sophisticated, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This fact arouses anger, in that the audience realizes the proposer seems indifferent to the fact that he
is proposing to murder thousands of children. Contrastingly, such morally unconventional solutions
would not exist in a calmer, straight forward Horatian satire. Yet, even in evaluating how anger is
emotionally imposed on the audience due to the absurdity of the proposal, it s impossible to disregard
the role of humor. There are obvious elements of humor throughout the proposal and amusement in
the very nature of the proposal is expected. However, any sense of humor abruptly disappears at the
heart of the critism. When the proposer begins stating I can think of no one objection that will possibly
be raised against this proposal the humor stops and the voice of Swift, as well as sharp criticism,
begins. Although humor may be an integral part of the proposal and certainly a partial indication of
the use of Horatian satire, the fact that humor isn t present throughout the whole proposal suggests that
the use of hilarity is secondary. Rather, this contrast of humor and emotionally imposed irritation only
helps to emphasize the role of anger. This is especially evident when one considers the irony that
litters the humorous proposal. Swift s development of the absurd proposal

Use Of Foreshadowing In William Goldman s The Princess Bride
William Goldman the author of The Princess Bride uses the foreshadowing technique anticipation
both within the story and in his asides to create an edge of your seat reading experience. The concept
of foreshadowing can be seen in three areas of the book love, pain and the interjections of Goldman.
In the first chapter of the book when Buttercup is seventeen, she and Wesley declare their love to one
another followed by the immediate departure of Wesley with these parting words I ll send for you
soon. Believe me (64). Buttercup eagerly awaits the return of Wesley and is devastated when she hears
of his death after a year of waiting. When she finally meets Wesley again she is twenty one. Later on

One of my theories, he said somewhat later, is that pain involves anticipation (259). Count Rugen says
this to Wesley in the Zoo of Death before leaving Wesley with the machine that had just made the wild
dog scream. Even the way the Count says it to Wesley by pausing creates anticipation. Wesley resides
on the fifth floor of the Zoo of Death, the one Humperdink left the empty in hopes of someday finding
something worthy, something as dangerous and powerful as he was(...)so he kept the great cage of the
fifth level always in readiness (75). Prince Humperdink anticipated a monster worthy of filling the
fifth level. Westley occupies the fifth level for about three months enduring all methods of torture
from Count Rugen. Wesley knows almost as soon as he arrives in the Zoo of Death that he will die
there, and he does at the hands of Prince

Masaccios The Tribute Money

Masaccio s The Tribute Money
The artist who epitomizes the innovative spirit of early 15th century Florentine painting was Tommaso
di ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai, known as Masaccio (Kleiner 241). The name meant clumsy Tom or
hulking Tom. Masaccio s mother Mona Jacopa di Martinozzo gave birth to him at the Castel San
Giovanni, the modern San Giovanni Valdarno on December 21, 1401. Which happens to be located in
the upper Arno Vally about 30 miles from Florence. Masaccio s father was a notary named Ser
Giovanni Cassai, a surname which came from his grandfather s job as a maker of wooden chests or
cassoni , and his mother was Mona Jacoba di Martinozzo, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This painting is a picture of the story from the Bible, the gospel of Matthew. Masaccio made the
followers circle around Jesus instead of following behind in a line which furthermore lead you to
believe he was teaching something. Ancient Roman painters used aerial perspective, medieval artists
had abandoned it. Thus, it virtually disappeared from art until Masaccio and his contemporaries
rediscovered it. They came to realize that the light and air interposed between viewers and what they
see are two parts of the visual experience called distance (Kleiner 242). Masaccio s painting helps to
remind people of the law that was set by the one we serve, which was to pay your taxes. Yes that did
come from God for those who do not know history. The story of Matthew is a great example of why
we pay taxes and Masaccio made a master piece by creating a visual of the story. The Tribute Money
itself alludes in some way to Man s separate duties to the State and to the Church. In it St Peter is
instructed by Christ to pay a tax to the civil authority. This must certainly be a reference to the
obligations of the Roman Church towards secular authority; it probably also refers to each individual
man s obligation to render separately to God and to Caesar that which is due to them (Visual Arts).
In conclusion, Masaccio was an outstanding artist. His piece that was inspired by other artist still
inspires us today. We can only

Speech On Poverty And Poverty
These days, poverty is one of the challenging issues that most of governments are dealing with and
want to find an effective solution to eradicate it. Poverty is the inability of people to buy basic needs
and access basic services of their life. For example, based on a statistic provided Afghanistan is known
as the second poor country among the Asian countries and this rate shows that the majority of people
in Afghanistan are living under the poverty line. In addition, they do not have sufficient money to
provide their basic needs. As the numbers of rich people are increasing around the world, the numbers
of people who suffer from the poverty are increasing as well, and the gap between these two classes is
gradually growing up. Many philosophers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

lead the society to illiteracy. While a state can be lead to the poverty due to the illiteracy of its citizens
whom are not capable to take part to the development of their society. People who are not able to read
a book or even write their names. The poor people do not have trustable or educated representative in
the political system or in the government to support their rights on behalf of them. . In poor countries
teachers are not training well to teach children. Hart argues that the Children requires teachers to be
involved in every aspect of their lives, both academic and personal (Hart). Since the students are not
familiar with the way of studying or do not have access to the internet or books, the teachers should
guide them how to develop their skills and get use to reading books and encourage them to increase
their self steam and self discipline. Teachers should help children to promote their interests and
improve their academic achievement and attendance. Students in poor countries have limited access to
new technology both in their schools and houses. Since the facilities and the opportunities are
inadequate to the poor students and because of their grades are failing, many of them might decide to
give up in the first

Biography Of Photographer Art Rogers
In 1980, photographer Art Rogers was commissioned to picture Jim Scanlon s eight new German
Shepherds. Through creative thought and technical works, he photographed Scanlon, his wife, and
their dogs into the photograph Puppies. He soon licensed the image and sold it to be available as prints
and notecards. During Jeff Koons visit in Europe, he bought a Puppies notecard and gave it to Italian
artisans in the Demetz Studio to produce four copies of it as sculptures called String of Puppies. The
sculptures were placed in the 1988 Banality Show exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery. Plaintiff
photographer Art Rogers claimed that defendant Jeff Koons copyrighted his photograph Puppies into
the sculpture String of Puppies. Koons argued his borrowing of Puppies was permissible under the fair
use doctrine and for parody. Rogers filed an action on October 11, 1989, seeking summary judgement
and permanent injunction for plagiarism and unfair competition under state laws.
Issue
Was defendant Koons String of Puppies borrowing of Roger s Puppies permissible under the fair use
doctrine and parody or was this a work of unauthorized copyright infringement?
Decision
The Court of Appeals ruled Koon s String of Puppies is copyright infringement and does not meet the
fair use doctrine and for parody use since Koon failed to satisfy the ordinary observer test and Section

Marking Territory Character Analysis
In Marking Territory, the author juxtaposes heated character interactions with private moments in
order to show how both the other Wes and his mother try to appear tough while secretly feeling hurt
and afraid. Prior to Wes s argument with his mother regarding his affairs in the drug business, he had a
heated encounter with his brother Tony on the same matter. Ending in a violence, anger, and
disappointment on the part of Tony, Wes ponders his relationship with Tony: Wes knew that he was
disappointing his brother, which hurt more than the beating that he had just taken. Wes was so
confused. He loved and respected his brother. Tony was the closest thing Wes had to a role model. But
the more he copied him, the more Tony pushed back. Wes wanted to be just like Tony. ... Show more

In an effort to investigate the claims communicated by Tony (that his brother was making money

unsure of what to think. She wasn t only upset about the drugs, she was upset about the lying. As a
mother who had discovered damning evidence that her second son was indeed a drug dealer, her
response was by all means what one would expect; that is, the mixture of sadness, fear,
disappointment, and anger. These two private moments communicated by the author, validates the
notion that when in private, both Wes and his mother are more inclined to allow feelings of

Analysis Of Chekhov s The Brothers Karamazov
Chekhov s use of allusion in Misery also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian literary
giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving around the
aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of the scope of this
paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in Dostoevsky s The
Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov wrote Misery . Towards
the end of the novel, Father Zosima, a figure who acts as a mouthpiece for Dostoevsky s own thoughts
on religion, indirectly responds to the arguments of Ivan Karamazov, who rejects God because of the
existence of suffering innocents and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But Jonah is not humbled and reverent as Job is. Instead, Jonah prayed to the Lord and said, O Lord, is
not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I
knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and
relenting from disaster (Jonah 4:2). Jonah refuses to simply accept God s message, and instead
challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in the first place. When God
responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from Jonah again. The final image of
Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing for an end to his life. Thus Jonah
himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible. It is only appropriate that Chekhov
chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job, to connect to the misery of his
protagonist. Jonah s questioning of God even when facing his literal presence is also appropriate given
Chekhov s own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian fashion, focuses on the realities of what
he had to go through, rather than being humbled and indulging in Job s deep, yet clear cut answers and
happy ending. The allusion to Jonah in Misery serves only to introduce a hint of Christian metaphysics
into the story, providing Chekhov with an opportunity to deconstruct its influence in society and in the
works of his

Reformation in the Church 2002
My Reformation for the Church in 2002
By Sally Smith
There are several problems in the church that I can see right now. The biggest problem I see is that
most Christians have made being a Christian a religious act. You have to do this and you can t do that
and if you don t you will go to hell. We have made being a Christian long and labor some. Few church
members understand the concept of grace. They have forgotten that Jesus just wants be our friend.
That being a Christian is not following a bunch of rules but having a relationship with Jesus. The
second problem I see is that most seminaries don t and refuse to ordain women and very few churches
have ordained women elders and deacons. Most churches have started doing ... Show more content on

Whoever serves should do it with the strength that God has given him, so that God will be praised
through Jesus Christ. All glory and power and dominion belong to God both now and forever. Amen.
Another problem I see is music. Throughout history, every time there was an outbreak of new music
an instrument was banded. Right now, most churches have banded guitars and drums. Most churches
also still sing long winded and mournful songs. Churches should sing new songs that are happy and
joyful. They should have well behaved drummer and guitar player. The fourth problem is in the
worship service. Most church services are predictable, long and boring with no variety. The worship
service should be thoughtful, yes even exciting and full of variety. A problem related to the one above
is communion. It has become boring, long, predicable and not meaningful. Most people have no clue
what the symbolism of communion is. Every communion should be different and meaningful. The
next problem I see is the Sabbath. My church follows the letter of the law on this subject but most
chuches don t even do that. The Sabbath should be a day that you look foreward to in spending time
with God. We seem to do whatever we want on the Sabbath. Or we make mindless rules like the
pharisees did; don t do this, do that. We have forgotton the true meaning of the Sabbath. The last
problem is that the church members rarely fellowship together anymore. In

Themes In The Scarlet Ibis
Do not let pride become a danger to others
From the beginning no one thought he would live, he was even given a name that only sounded good
on a gravestone. His own Brother even plotted to kill him, but one afternoon the boy, Doodle smiled at
his Brother. That action caused his Brother to believe that he could live and he was all there . Doodle
was born as a disappointment. At birth he had a big head and a small body, his skin was red and
shriveled like an old man. Everyone expected him to die. his father had the carpenter build a coffin for
him, but he didn t die, not yet. In the story, The scarlet ibis, by James Hurst, the theme pride can
become dangerous when control is lost is shown through flashback and tone. To begin the first way
pride can be dangerous when control is lost is shown through flashback. Doodle had grown a bit, he
was about 5 years old, but there was a problem, he couldn t walk. His brother became embarrassed of
his inability to walk so he decided to teach him to walk. He tries to get Doodle to stand alone but
Doodle falls, Doodle warns his brother not to hurt him. But he responds with Shut up, I m not going to
hurt you, I m going to teach you to walk (Hurst 2). This quote shows Doodles Brother letting his pride
take over. Despite Doodles failed attempt he makes him go again, immediately. This is his pride taking
over, he gets the notion that he is able to make Doodle normal by himself . Brother ignoring Doodles

Alternate Septic System
If you don t have city sewage you probably have a septic system. A septic system is a system that
treats removes and disposes of water. Usually this water is from homes and businesses. Septic systems
are responsible for the removal of water waste. If it is working properly it will safely remove filtered
water out of harms way and back into the aquifer. If a septic system is not working properly it can be
dangerous it may cause the near by water table to overflow causing flooding and water contamination.
If this occurs people often must resort to an alternative septic system.
An alternative septic system is simply a different system than the traditional system. In a traditional
septic system the water from the house leads into the septic tank where bacteria is broken down and
eventually it forms three different layers. The bottom layer is made up of solids, this layer is called
sludge, a middle layer is liquid with some organic matter, and a top with floating solids. Devices
called baffles allow the middle layer of the tank to flow out into a perforated pipe and it takes it to a
far away field. This safely removes harmful water from nearby houses. The remainder of the waste
stays in the tank for further break down. That is how a traditional drainfield system works. If this
septic system is not suited for ones property due to the geography of the land or limited space one may
need to use an alternate septic system. There are many types of alternative septic systems some of

Petroleum production began in the late 1950 s, and by the early 1970 s it was by far the leading
export. The massive revenues from oil have led to widespread corruption that continues today. Up to a
fifth of the country s oil output, an estimated 400,000 barrels a day, is embezzled from illegally tapped
pipelines. Money has also disappeared; Nigeria s central bank claimed that some $20 billion in oil
revenues had simply vanished.
The economy of Nigeria is historically founded on agriculture, with approximately 70% of the
workforce still engaged in farming. The primary crops are cocoa, peanuts, palm oil, corn, rice,
sorghum, millet, yams, soybeans, cassava.
Key commercial industries in Nigeria include coal, tin, textiles, footwear, fertilizer, printing, ceramics,

In recent years, the telecommunication and film industry have grown to become a major part of

The best time to see the next aurora borealis will be around 2025 and 2024. The evidence that led to
my claim was trying figuring out the pattern and calculating the max for every year. The number of
sunspots on the surface of the Sun changes from year to year. This rise and fall in sunspots counts in a
cycle. The graph shows every 11 or 10 years average we get a max of sunspots, that s called a solar
maximum. The more sunspots we have the more solar weather we have, that s more particles being
released into space, that means there will be more aurora activity. The concepts that relate to the
evidence and support my claim are taking notes and using the sunspots graph. The best time to see the

Blek s Graffiti Art
A tag is the most basic writing of an artist s name; it is a form of which an artist gain recognition. A
graffiti writer s tag is his or her personalized signature. Graffiti is more destructive, they use aerosol,
hard to read and they usually do it at night. Street art use different mode of paintings, they do it in
broad daylight and it is more acceptable by the community. The artist are treated differently depending
on the type of art they are showing. If the art is more acceptable by the people around, then they are
praised by their work. Usually the defining factor on whether or not Graffiti art is considered legal is
based on permission. This is not a universal rule and every city will have its own process for
determining where and what type of Graffiti art is acceptable. There is a basic idea or feeling that a
highly tagged neighborhood has been overrun by criminals or street gangs or that it is simply an area
of a city that is not worth caring about.
Arts is very powerful tool that can change the way we view towards our society and it is more
powerful than words itself; it gives us a sense of awareness, it affect our way of thinking by sending

A Comparison of Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells Essay
A Comparison of Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Cells
There are two main types of cells in the world. The simplest cells such as bacteria are known as
Prokaryotic cells, and human cells are known as Eukaryotic cells. The main difference between each
of these cells is that a eukaryotic cell has a nucleus and a membrane bound section in which the cell
holds the main DNA which are building blocks of life.
Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus. The chromosomes which are found in prokaryotes are usually
spread in the cytoplasm. In eukaryotic cells the chromosomes remain together inside the nucleus and
there is a clear nuclear membrane that is surrounding the nucleus.

the words that Septimus mutters to himself while trying to embrace the traumatic experiences of war.
However, after over a century from WWI, significant majority of the world is a participator in some
form of a deadly conflict. According to Durkheim in The Division of Labor in Society, the process of
creating a developed society brings a pathological side effect of chaos and disorder. From that
perspective, the act of making the world modern is nothing else but making it more disturbed and

Despite decades, the negligence of education among black communities is still as relevant as it was in

does not change the social hierarchy of the communities. This points to Freud s argument on

Review Of Stephenie Meyer s Twilight
Lena Andersson
ENG104
Research Paper
Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a romantic book about two teenagers, a girl named Bella and a
vampire named Edward. The two of them fall in love, and Bella is put in danger by a different group
of vampires. There have been several different types of criticism towards this book and every criticism
is different ; it includes being one hundred percent justifiable to do absolutely anything for the one you
love. Others have also said that it was not intended to relate to teen girls, but it actually ended up
doing just that. Also, some critics have compared Twilight to Harry Potter in the sense that both of the
stories lie in a dream (Bethune). Brian Bethune wrote a criticism called Love at First Bite which at
first compares Stephenie Meyer s Twilight to J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter. There are various reasons
why Bethune believes that Twilight is similar to Harry Potter. He believes that Meyer s and Rowling s
stories lie in a dream (Bethune). This is easy to agree with because Twilight is based on a vampire
friendly romance. This is obviously unrealistic and would never happen in real life. In Harry Potter,
the story is based on a warlock who fights off all different kinds of magical and mythical creatures.
Evidently, it is easy to figure out that this story also lies in a dream. Bethune starts to talk about
religion which is based on Stephenie Meyer s real life and how her religion is somewhat duplicated in
her Twilight

Essay about Americans Have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Americans Have the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
Our rights as Americans started to take shape when the Constitution of the United States was drawn up
by the delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. Three years later, a very important
part of American history called the Bill of Rights was added. The Bill of Rights is looked upon and
interpreted every day. It gives the citizens of the United States many of the rights and freedoms that
we value today, and some of those are in jeopardy. One right that is at stake is our right to bear arms,
which is addressed in the Second Amendment. The Second Amendment is a highly debatable topic,
and many legal scholars and the Supreme Court have yet to resolve the issues and ... Show more

Several states have added right to carry laws, while others have made it illegal to possess a concealed
weapon (Smith 22). Most of the additional laws deal with the ownership and use of handguns and
assault type weapons. There has been much debate and government lobbying dealing with the passing
of gun laws. Many people think the government is focusing too much on the laws about guns, because
90 percent of all violent crime in the United States does not involve any type of firearm (Smith 17).
Other countries around the world have also set examples by having gun laws. Guns are banned in the
United Kingdom, and the crime rate has risen since that time (Smith 24). Also, within the United
States, the crime rate in the states is lower if the states have right to carry laws (Smith 22). The other
major problem with gun laws in the United States is that they are simply not being enforced (Smith
15). These facts and others involving the positive uses of guns are argued in court rooms and
government offices around the country every day. As government officials study the facts and make
laws, they continue to maintain the people s right to bear arms.
When thinking about the people s right to bear arms, it is appropriate to know that not all stories about
guns are bad. Guns are not always used for violence, and the government seems to be keeping this fact
in mind. Positive stories about people having their lives saved by guns seem to

Persuasive Essay On Choices In Life
I believe that everyone in this life has choices. The choices we make define who we are as people and
what we stand for. Choosing one path over another may be the best or worst decision you could ever
make. However, once you have chosen, stick to your decision because you made that choice for a
reason. Even if it is to have lunch at a certain restaurant over another, or a bigger decision like
choosing your major. Something in your life helped you make that decision, and the worst thing you
can do is live your life with the regret of a choice. If your decision ends up badly, simply make
another choice. Choose a new path. In the words of my oh so wise History teacher, Never second
guess yourself because that s worse than making the wrong choice in the end. One of the best
examples that comes to mind is a story I heard a few weeks ago, based on a real event. In 1979, a man
named Lee Strobel and his family went to a restaurant one evening and he gave his 7 year old
daughter a nickel to get a gumball from the machine and a few moments later, she came back to the
table choking on the gum. They didn t know what to do and if they waited for an ambulance they
feared it would be too late. All of a sudden, a woman came up and said that she is a nurse and can
help. The woman, after getting the gumball out of the little girl, told her parents that her and her
husband were headed to another restaurant when all of a sudden she made a last minute choice to go
here. Because of her choice, a little girl s life was saved. Hearing stories such as this one, reminds me
of all of the choices I have made, and how they have affected me.
When I was 6, my family up and moved to a new school called Knox County. I loved it there for I had
so many friends and nothing bad ever happened. Then at the end of 5th grade, my dad got a new job
so we moved schools again. This time I was 11 and starting middle school at a small school called
Pilot Grove, and I ve been here ever since. There are times I catch myself wondering what would ve
happened if we had stayed in Knox or the first town I ever lived in, Philadelphia (no not the one in
Pennsylvania). Sometimes I even believe that things would be a lot better if we had stayed there.

Juvenile Justice System In The Film Kids For Cash
The U.S. Constitution guarantees every defendant a right to counsel and to a fair trial. That right is
often rationed. Those with financial resources receive the best justice money can buy, while the poor
are left with a little justice system valuing expediency over quality, resulting in the majority of cases
ending in plea bargains (Love, 2017). Kids for Cash is a judicial scandal that was investigated. In the
year 2009, Federal investigated Luzerne County courts where numerous criminal behaviors were
unveiled from the bench. The investigation unveiled and exposed Ciavarella, 58, along with Conahan,

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court approved rule 152, a court rule, that requires juveniles under 14
years of age to have a lawyers at all delinquency proceedings; youth 14 years and older may waive
their right to counsel only in limited circumstance and only if the court is satisfied that the juvenile
made a knowing, intelligent, and voluntary waiver of that right ( Juvenile Law Center , 2012) .
Because juveniles were restraint like criminals when they are being arrested, the PSC adopted Rule
139, prohibiting the use of various restraints, including handcuffs, chains, shackles, irons or
straitjackets on children appearing in court ( Juvenile Law Center , 2012) . The only way they can use
such restraints is if the court determines, after providing the youth with an opportunity to be heard that
they are necessary to prevent physical harm, stop disruptive behavior that creates the potential for
harm, or to keep the juvenile from fleeing ( Juvenile Law Center , 2012) . In cases like this, it is
necessary to restrain them. In the movie, it was unnecessary to constrain a juvenile with a minor

Characteristics Of Gifted And Gifted
Gifted and Talented: A Gift and a Curse
Although being gifted and talented (GT) is not thought of as a disability, it presents its own set of
difficulties. It is difficult to estimate the absolute number of gifted children because the calculation
depends on the various criteria and methods used to identify gifted children. Also, due to the nature of
begin gifted and talented, common characteristics can be misleading.
The Gifted and Talented Student
A student who gets good grades, behaves well, and excels above the academic average has in the past
been considered gifted. The student who does not perform at this level is less likely to be identified
and less likely to receive assistance. The term gifted was limited to academic achievement. In today s
society this definition has changed because giftedness spans to more than one area of development and
achievement (Turnbull, Turnbull, Wehmeyer, Shogren, 2013).
Developmental Profile
There is no single indicator of giftedness. GT students are generally considered to have an IQ greater
than 125 and/or show evidence of a high performance capability in areas such as intellectual, creative,
specific academic, or leadership ability, or in the performing and visual arts (Turnbull et al., 2013).
Characteristics/Classification
The classification of gifted and talented students is easier to define than their characteristics. The
intellectual classification of GT students is; baseline GT IQ between 125 130, moderately GT IQ

Resistance Of The Underground Railroad
During the 19th century, African American slaves used various ways to show resistance to the harsh
slavery from their masters. They used three measures to rebel against slavery; they ran away, rebelled
against slavery and performed acts of resistance like slowing their down work. Among the three
measures, running away was the only measure that helped them escape for their freedom. The
runaway slaves escaped to a nearby forest and others visited their spouse or relatives on other
plantations. This did not grant them the freedom they way looking for and hence they looked for other
means to escape. During the same period, the Underground Railroad occurred and it was more

Wal Mart Company Overview Essay
Basic History Overview
Wal Mart s history is one of innovation, leadership and success. It started with a single store in
Rogers, Arkansas in 1962 and has grown to what is now the world s largest and arguably, the most
emulated retailer. Some researchers refer to Wal Mart as the industry trendsetter. Today, this retailing
pioneer has annual revenues of over $100 billion, 3,000 stores and more than 750,000 employees
worldwide. Wal Mart operates each store, from the products it stocks, to the front end equipment that
helps speed checkout, with the same philosophy: provide everyday low prices and superior customer
service. Lower prices also eliminate the expense of frequent sales promotions and sales are more
predictable. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What tactics has it used to become a major global retailer?
Wal Mart s success is mainly based on its concentration of a single business strategy. This strategy has
achieved enviable success over the last three decades without relying upon diversification to sustain
its growth and competitive advantages. In a sense, Wal Mart s low prices, service, and smile are their
leading marketing strategies. However, there is risk in this strategy, because concentration on a single
business strategy is similar to putting all of a firm s eggs in one industry basket . On the business side,
Wal Mart is the country s most sophisticated retailer in terms of using information systems. Their
cross docking inventory and transportation services able them to have the goods needed by the
consumer at all times. In order for Wal Mart to become a major global retailer, they have closely
examined and utilized tactics to profit from their many stores. One great tactic is starting free trade
zone distribution centers, in turn, saving almost $500,000 annually. Another tactic includes their
service from when you walk in the store to when you leave. Also, their bread and butter is again the
technology they utilize. They can track how much of one item has been sold on any giving day, and if
not a hot commodity at one store, they will ship it out to another where it is being sold much faster.
2. Can Wal Mart sustain its competitive advantage in global retailing?

Cultural Conflicts That Influenced His Moral Compass And...
In the story Bless Me, Ultima, Antonio faced several cultural conflicts that influenced his moral
compass and cultural identity. First, he faced a cultural conflict between his mother and father s
aspirations regarding his destiny. His mother wanted Antonio to pursue a future life as a priest, while
his father wanted Antonio to be a cowboy. Similarly, I grappled with the same battle as a child. My
mother wanted me to pursue medicine, while my father wanted me to become an engineer and follow
their footsteps. Just like Antonio had learned from Ultima, this was an element I had to decide for
myself. I found out from life experiences that my passion for science, the human body, and the desire
to prolong and save people s lives, ultimately made my decision to pursue medicine.
Another cultural conflict he faced was between his Spanish speaking self and his English speaking
schoolmates. Throughout his life, he had followed the Spanish culture of his family, who mainly spoke
Spanish in their home. His first day of school, he noticed that his English speaking schoolmates were
less accepting of his culture when he spoke Spanish in front of the class and unpacked his lunch filled
with Hispanic food, which differed from the sandwiches his schoolmates brought for lunch. I shared
the same prejudice as Antonio when I initially came to Los Angeles from the Philippines. My first day
as a third grader, I was humiliated by my schoolmates because I spoke little English with a

shopping online; another is shopping at the real shop. As a matter fact, shopping online is a new way

Police Brutality a Violation of Human Rights
Police brutality is one of the most serious human rights violations in the United States and it occurs
everywhere. The reason why I chose this topic is because police brutality happens all the time in the
United States and still remains unrecognized by many. Additionally, the public should be
knowledgeable about this topic because of how serious this crime can be and the serious outcomes
that police brutality can have on other police officers and the public. The job of police officers is to
maintain public order, prevent, and detect crimes. They are involved in very dangerous and stressful
occupations that can involve violent situations that must be stopped and controlled by any means. In
many confrontations with people, police may find ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They prefer to keep all of those types of things private. Even if an officer is caught using excessive
force, the bill of rights limit the abilities of a police commissioner or chief to suspend the officer that
is being accused , and requires that the suspended officer continues to get their benefits and pay. Most
of the time there s nothing that can be done to properly punish an officer who abuses their power due
to the fact that the officers won t tell on each other. Newspapers, television stations and tabloids are
getting involved in the sensitive subject of police brutality. It is more common to turn on a television
or read a paper and
see headlines like, Police officer brutally beats a homeless man for example. There are many cases of
the police using excessive force and corruption within a department and even debates on whether high
speed pursuits are necessary (Deshon, 2000). It can be that officers may not have a full understanding
of their oath of office or the ethical code they attained. It could also be that they are corrupt cops.
Officers go through training and in doing so are also educated on the ethical behaviors and oath of an
officer. Police agencies all take the same oath.
Police brutality in the United States, is a problem that must be solved. It all begins with the police and
civilians trusting one another. Just like the words that can be seen on the side of an NYPD squad car,
officers

Canadian Identity Stereotypes
Letting Others Define Us
Canadian identity is defined as how Canadians differ from the rest of the world and the uniqueness of
Canadian life. Today, Canada has a variety of stereotypes foreigners associate with Canada and
essentially, Canadian identity is defined based on how others perceive us. Some of the critical ideas
that foreigners typically associate Canada are universal healthcare, multiculturalism, and peace. All
three of these stereotypes based off foreigners impressions of Canada help define Canadian identity.
However, these stereotypes do not appear out of thin air, instead, they come from historical events.
The Citizenship Act, UN Peacekeeping Mission during the Suez Crisis, and the Medical Care Act all
contributed in the construction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It simply provided an easy way to define the lives of people living in Canada as Canadian citizens.
The Citizenship Act of 1947 allowed citizens to become subjects of Canada rather than subjects of
Britain. It allowed anyone of any racial or ethnic background to apply for citizenship, free of
discrimination. It was meant to create a sense of unity among Canadians while relieving racial or
ethnic tensions. This was significant in defining not only Canadian citizens, but also led to Canada s
multicultural society and the Multiculturalism Act in 1971. From a foreigners perspective, this act was
perceived as an attempt of removing discrimination and racism in Canada. Due to these anti
discriminatory rules of the act, foreigners inferred that Canada was starting to minimize and remove
racial discrimination to allow everyone to be a Canadian citizen. In simplified terms, Canada wanted
to promote multiculturalism instead of discriminating against everyone who was not British. Thus,
foreigners defined multiculturalism as a part of Canadian identity. This aspect of national identity only
strengthened with time as more and more events promoted multiculturalism for Canada to become the
multicultural country today. In addition, it is seen today that many immigrants choose to come to
Canada due to the culturally diverse, welcoming society here. This further proves that foreigners
believe that multiculturalism is a big part of Canada, defining its national identity. In summary, the
Citizenship Act marked the beginning of multiculturalism in Canada and sparked more events
promoting multiculturalism. This resulted in foreigners defining a stereotype of multiculturalism as an
important aspect of Canada s national identity

  • 2. Juvenelian Satire in A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift... Effectively ushering change in society or pointing out faults that have existed and gone unnoticed can be a daunting task for any social commentator. Often, blandly protesting grievances or concerns can fall upon deaf ears and change can be slow or non existent. However, Jonathan Swift in his pamphlet A Modest Proposal, uses clever, targeted, and ironic criticism to bring the social state of Ireland to the attention of indolent aristocrats. He accomplishes such criticism through satire, specifically Juvenalian satire. Swift s A Modest Proposal stands as an example of the type of satire that plays upon the audience s emotion by creating anger concerning the indifference of the voice created. He complements such criticism with sophisticated, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This fact arouses anger, in that the audience realizes the proposer seems indifferent to the fact that he is proposing to murder thousands of children. Contrastingly, such morally unconventional solutions would not exist in a calmer, straight forward Horatian satire. Yet, even in evaluating how anger is emotionally imposed on the audience due to the absurdity of the proposal, it s impossible to disregard the role of humor. There are obvious elements of humor throughout the proposal and amusement in the very nature of the proposal is expected. However, any sense of humor abruptly disappears at the heart of the critism. When the proposer begins stating I can think of no one objection that will possibly be raised against this proposal the humor stops and the voice of Swift, as well as sharp criticism, begins. Although humor may be an integral part of the proposal and certainly a partial indication of the use of Horatian satire, the fact that humor isn t present throughout the whole proposal suggests that the use of hilarity is secondary. Rather, this contrast of humor and emotionally imposed irritation only helps to emphasize the role of anger. This is especially evident when one considers the irony that litters the humorous proposal. Swift s development of the absurd proposal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Use Of Foreshadowing In William Goldman s The Princess Bride William Goldman the author of The Princess Bride uses the foreshadowing technique anticipation both within the story and in his asides to create an edge of your seat reading experience. The concept of foreshadowing can be seen in three areas of the book love, pain and the interjections of Goldman. In the first chapter of the book when Buttercup is seventeen, she and Wesley declare their love to one another followed by the immediate departure of Wesley with these parting words I ll send for you soon. Believe me (64). Buttercup eagerly awaits the return of Wesley and is devastated when she hears of his death after a year of waiting. When she finally meets Wesley again she is twenty one. Later on Buttercup must wait again for Wesley to come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of my theories, he said somewhat later, is that pain involves anticipation (259). Count Rugen says this to Wesley in the Zoo of Death before leaving Wesley with the machine that had just made the wild dog scream. Even the way the Count says it to Wesley by pausing creates anticipation. Wesley resides on the fifth floor of the Zoo of Death, the one Humperdink left the empty in hopes of someday finding something worthy, something as dangerous and powerful as he was(...)so he kept the great cage of the fifth level always in readiness (75). Prince Humperdink anticipated a monster worthy of filling the fifth level. Westley occupies the fifth level for about three months enduring all methods of torture from Count Rugen. • 4. Masaccios The Tribute Money Professor Debbie Graham HU 2301 391 Interdisciplinary Arts 17 January 2014 Masaccio s The Tribute Money The artist who epitomizes the innovative spirit of early 15th century Florentine painting was Tommaso di ser Giovanni di Mone Cassai, known as Masaccio (Kleiner 241). The name meant clumsy Tom or hulking Tom. Masaccio s mother Mona Jacopa di Martinozzo gave birth to him at the Castel San Giovanni, the modern San Giovanni Valdarno on December 21, 1401. Which happens to be located in the upper Arno Vally about 30 miles from Florence. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This painting is a picture of the story from the Bible, the gospel of Matthew. Masaccio made the followers circle around Jesus instead of following behind in a line which furthermore lead you to believe he was teaching something. Ancient Roman painters used aerial perspective, medieval artists had abandoned it. Thus, it virtually disappeared from art until Masaccio and his contemporaries rediscovered it. They came to realize that the light and air interposed between viewers and what they see are two parts of the visual experience called distance (Kleiner 242). Masaccio s painting helps to remind people of the law that was set by the one we serve, which was to pay your taxes. Yes that did come from God for those who do not know history. The story of Matthew is a great example of why we pay taxes and Masaccio made a master piece by creating a visual of the story. The Tribute Money itself alludes in some way to Man s separate duties to the State and to the Church. In it St Peter is instructed by Christ to pay a tax to the civil authority. This must certainly be a reference to the obligations of the Roman Church towards secular authority; it probably also refers to each individual man s obligation to render separately to God and to Caesar that which is due to them (Visual Arts). In conclusion, Masaccio was an outstanding artist. His piece that was inspired by other artist still inspires us today. We can only ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Speech On Poverty And Poverty These days, poverty is one of the challenging issues that most of governments are dealing with and want to find an effective solution to eradicate it. Poverty is the inability of people to buy basic needs and access basic services of their life. For example, based on a statistic provided Afghanistan is known as the second poor country among the Asian countries and this rate shows that the majority of people in Afghanistan are living under the poverty line. In addition, they do not have sufficient money to provide their basic needs. As the numbers of rich people are increasing around the world, the numbers of people who suffer from the poverty are increasing as well, and the gap between these two classes is gradually growing up. In poor countries teachers are not training well to teach children. Hart argues that the Children requires teachers to be involved in every aspect of their lives, both academic and personal (Hart). Since the students are not familiar with the way of studying or do not have access to the internet or books, the teachers should guide them how to develop their skills and get use to reading books and encourage them to increase their self steam and self discipline. Teachers should help children to promote their interests and improve their academic achievement and attendance. • 6. Biography Of Photographer Art Rogers In 1980, photographer Art Rogers was commissioned to picture Jim Scanlon s eight new German Shepherds. Through creative thought and technical works, he photographed Scanlon, his wife, and their dogs into the photograph Puppies. He soon licensed the image and sold it to be available as prints and notecards. During Jeff Koons visit in Europe, he bought a Puppies notecard and gave it to Italian artisans in the Demetz Studio to produce four copies of it as sculptures called String of Puppies. The sculptures were placed in the 1988 Banality Show exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery. Plaintiff photographer Art Rogers claimed that defendant Jeff Koons copyrighted his photograph Puppies into the sculpture String of Puppies. Koons argued his borrowing of Puppies was permissible under the fair use doctrine and for parody. Rogers filed an action on October 11, 1989, seeking summary judgement and permanent injunction for plagiarism and unfair competition under state laws. Issue Was defendant Koons String of Puppies borrowing of Roger s Puppies permissible under the fair use doctrine and parody or was this a work of unauthorized copyright infringement? Decision The Court of Appeals ruled Koon s String of Puppies is copyright infringement and does not meet the fair use doctrine and for parody use since Koon failed to satisfy the ordinary observer test and Section 107 factors. • 8. Marking Territory Character Analysis In Marking Territory, the author juxtaposes heated character interactions with private moments in order to show how both the other Wes and his mother try to appear tough while secretly feeling hurt and afraid. Prior to Wes s argument with his mother regarding his affairs in the drug business, he had a heated encounter with his brother Tony on the same matter. Ending in a violence, anger, and disappointment on the part of Tony, Wes ponders his relationship with Tony: Wes knew that he was disappointing his brother, which hurt more than the beating that he had just taken. Wes was so confused. He loved and respected his brother. Tony was the closest thing Wes had to a role model. But the more he copied him, the more Tony pushed back. • 9. Analysis Of Chekhov s The Brothers Karamazov Chekhov s use of allusion in Misery also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian literary giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving around the aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of the scope of this paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in Dostoevsky s The Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov wrote Misery . Towards the end of the novel, Father Zosima, a figure who acts as a mouthpiece for Dostoevsky s own thoughts on religion, indirectly responds to the arguments of Ivan Karamazov, who rejects God because of the existence of suffering innocents and other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But Jonah is not humbled and reverent as Job is. Instead, Jonah prayed to the Lord and said, O Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster (Jonah 4:2). Jonah refuses to simply accept God s message, and instead challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in the first place. When God responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from Jonah again. The final image of Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing for an end to his life. Thus Jonah himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible. It is only appropriate that Chekhov chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job, to connect to the misery of his protagonist. Jonah s questioning of God even when facing his literal presence is also appropriate given Chekhov s own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian fashion, focuses on the realities of what he had to go through, rather than being humbled and indulging in Job s deep, yet clear cut answers and happy ending. The allusion to Jonah in Misery serves only to introduce a hint of Christian metaphysics into the story, providing Chekhov with an opportunity to deconstruct its influence in society and in the works of his ... • 10. Reformation in the Church 2002 My Reformation for the Church in 2002 By Sally Smith There are several problems in the church that I can see right now. The biggest problem I see is that most Christians have made being a Christian a religious act. You have to do this and you can t do that and if you don t you will go to hell. We have made being a Christian long and labor some. Few church members understand the concept of grace. They have forgotten that Jesus just wants be our friend. That being a Christian is not following a bunch of rules but having a relationship with Jesus. The second problem I see is that most seminaries don t and refuse to ordain women and very few churches have ordained women elders and deacons. Most churches have started doing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Whoever serves should do it with the strength that God has given him, so that God will be praised through Jesus Christ. All glory and power and dominion belong to God both now and forever. Amen. Another problem I see is music. Throughout history, every time there was an outbreak of new music an instrument was banded. Right now, most churches have banded guitars and drums. Most churches also still sing long winded and mournful songs. Churches should sing new songs that are happy and joyful. They should have well behaved drummer and guitar player. The fourth problem is in the worship service. Most church services are predictable, long and boring with no variety. The worship service should be thoughtful, yes even exciting and full of variety. A problem related to the one above is communion. It has become boring, long, predicable and not meaningful. Most people have no clue what the symbolism of communion is. Every communion should be different and meaningful. The next problem I see is the Sabbath. My church follows the letter of the law on this subject but most chuches don t even do that. The Sabbath should be a day that you look foreward to in spending time with God. We seem to do whatever we want on the Sabbath. Or we make mindless rules like the pharisees did; don t do this, do that. We have forgotton the true meaning of the Sabbath. The last problem is that the church members rarely fellowship together anymore. In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Themes In The Scarlet Ibis Do not let pride become a danger to others From the beginning no one thought he would live, he was even given a name that only sounded good on a gravestone. His own Brother even plotted to kill him, but one afternoon the boy, Doodle smiled at his Brother. That action caused his Brother to believe that he could live and he was all there . Doodle was born as a disappointment. At birth he had a big head and a small body, his skin was red and shriveled like an old man. Everyone expected him to die. his father had the carpenter build a coffin for him, but he didn t die, not yet. In the story, The scarlet ibis, by James Hurst, the theme pride can become dangerous when control is lost is shown through flashback and tone. To begin the first way pride can be dangerous when control is lost is shown through flashback. Doodle had grown a bit, he was about 5 years old, but there was a problem, he couldn t walk. His brother became embarrassed of his inability to walk so he decided to teach him to walk. He tries to get Doodle to stand alone but Doodle falls, Doodle warns his brother not to hurt him. But he responds with Shut up, I m not going to hurt you, I m going to teach you to walk (Hurst 2). This quote shows Doodles Brother letting his pride take over. • 12. Alternate Septic System If you don t have city sewage you probably have a septic system. A septic system is a system that treats removes and disposes of water. Usually this water is from homes and businesses. Septic systems are responsible for the removal of water waste. If it is working properly it will safely remove filtered water out of harms way and back into the aquifer. If a septic system is not working properly it can be dangerous it may cause the near by water table to overflow causing flooding and water contamination. If this occurs people often must resort to an alternative septic system. An alternative septic system is simply a different system than the traditional system. In a traditional septic system the water from the house leads into the septic tank where bacteria is broken down and eventually it forms three different layers. The bottom layer is made up of solids, this layer is called sludge, a middle layer is liquid with some organic matter, and a top with floating solids. Devices called baffles allow the middle layer of the tank to flow out into a perforated pipe and it takes it to a far away field. This safely removes harmful water from nearby houses. The remainder of the waste stays in the tank for further break down. That is how a traditional drainfield system works. If this septic system is not suited for ones property due to the geography of the land or limited space one may need to use an alternate septic system. There are many types of alternative septic systems some of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two of them fall in love, and Bella is put in danger by a different group of vampires. There have been several different types of criticism towards this book and every criticism is different ; it includes being one hundred percent justifiable to do absolutely anything for the one you love. Others have also said that it was not intended to relate to teen girls, but it actually ended up doing just that. Also, some critics have compared Twilight to Harry Potter in the sense that both of the stories lie in a dream (Bethune). Brian Bethune wrote a criticism called Love at First Bite which at first compares Stephenie Meyer s Twilight to J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter. There are various reasons why Bethune believes that Twilight is similar to Harry Potter. He believes that Meyer s and Rowling s stories lie in a dream (Bethune). This is easy to agree with because Twilight is based on a vampire friendly romance. This is obviously unrealistic and would never happen in real life. In Harry Potter, the story is based on a warlock who fights off all different kinds of magical and mythical creatures. Evidently, it is easy to figure out that this story also lies in a dream. It gives the citizens of the United States many of the rights and freedoms that we value today, and some of those are in jeopardy. Most of the additional laws deal with the ownership and use of handguns and assault type weapons. There has been much debate and government lobbying dealing with the passing of gun laws. Many people think the government is focusing too much on the laws about guns, because 90 percent of all violent crime in the United States does not involve any type of firearm (Smith 17). Other countries around the world have also set examples by having gun laws. Guns are banned in the United Kingdom, and the crime rate has risen since that time (Smith 24). Also, within the United States, the crime rate in the states is lower if the states have right to carry laws (Smith 22). The other major problem with gun laws in the United States is that they are simply not being enforced (Smith 15). These facts and others involving the positive uses of guns are argued in court rooms and government offices around the country every day. As government officials study the facts and make laws, they continue to maintain the people s right to bear arms. • 21. Persuasive Essay On Choices In Life I believe that everyone in this life has choices. The choices we make define who we are as people and what we stand for. Choosing one path over another may be the best or worst decision you could ever make. However, once you have chosen, stick to your decision because you made that choice for a reason. Even if it is to have lunch at a certain restaurant over another, or a bigger decision like choosing your major. Something in your life helped you make that decision, and the worst thing you can do is live your life with the regret of a choice. If your decision ends up badly, simply make another choice. Choose a new path. In the words of my oh so wise History teacher, Never second guess yourself because that s worse than making the wrong choice in the end. One of the best examples that comes to mind is a story I heard a few weeks ago, based on a real event. In 1979, a man named Lee Strobel and his family went to a restaurant one evening and he gave his 7 year old daughter a nickel to get a gumball from the machine and a few moments later, she came back to the table choking on the gum. They didn t know what to do and if they waited for an ambulance they feared it would be too late. All of a sudden, a woman came up and said that she is a nurse and can help. The woman, after getting the gumball out of the little girl, told her parents that her and her husband were headed to another restaurant when all of a sudden she made a last minute choice to go here. Because of her choice, a little girl s life was saved. Hearing stories such as this one, reminds me of all of the choices I have made, and how they have affected me. When I was 6, my family up and moved to a new school called Knox County. I loved it there for I had so many friends and nothing bad ever happened. Then at the end of 5th grade, my dad got a new job so we moved schools again. This time I was 11 and starting middle school at a small school called Pilot Grove, and I ve been here ever since. It allowed anyone of any racial or ethnic background to apply for citizenship, free of discrimination. It was meant to create a sense of unity among Canadians while relieving racial or ethnic tensions. This was significant in defining not only Canadian citizens, but also led to Canada s multicultural society and the Multiculturalism Act in 1971. From a foreigners perspective, this act was perceived as an attempt of removing discrimination and racism in Canada. Due to these anti discriminatory rules of the act, foreigners inferred that Canada was starting to minimize and remove racial discrimination to allow everyone to be a Canadian citizen.
