Lister believed that sepsis was caused by a pollen like dust (Cartwright) and his goal was to try to
eliminate contact from the pollen like dust from surgery procedures. He learned from Louis Pasteur
that this pollen like dust was micro organisms and that they caused infections in patients. Lister
decided that he was going to eliminate contact of micro organisms by exposing them to strong
chemicals (Cartwright). He ended up finding a chemical called carbolic acid, which had been used to
clean sewers and now was being used as a wound dressing to cover the wound and reduce the rate of
infection (Wilson). In 1865, he tried the carbolic acid by putting it on a serious wound of a young boy,
and in six weeks, he was completely healed because there was no infection (The Famous People). This
result led to Lister instructing other surgeons to wash their hands and instruments with carbolic acid to
promote cleanliness and prevent infection. Due to this practice, from 1865 to 1869, surgical mortality
fell from 45 to 15 percent (Cartwright and Biography.com Editors). This statistic clearly indicates that
the carbolic acid helps prevent infection and mortality and that Lister was correct in his instructing of

The need for highly trained intelligence personnel has never been more important. A personnel
shortage at the Intelligence Training Branch has a negative impact on the Coast Guard. The effects of
this shortage are resulting in signs of burn out within the staff, the graduates are not receiving the
highest quality of training, and the instructor billets are becoming harder to fill. From a chief s
perspective staff burn out is a high priority issue. With the exception of the School Chiefs and Deputy
School Chief all instructions for both A and C School come from the same central pool. IS A School is
the only school on site designed this way. We are billeted for six petty officers. However, we currently
only have two. That leaves two chiefs and two petty officers to complete 81 training weeks per year.
Some of these trainings are road shows and require two people to travel. In addition to the regular
work schedule, the chief s must be duty IS and OOD qualified. The petty officers must be duty IS
qualified. This is currently putting us in a one and four rotation for duty IS. Unfortunately, this leaves

defendant and herself are not guilty. Repetition is used by authors or speakers to get important
thoughts across. Goldman uses repetition multiple times. She uses one main phrase throughout the
whole speech, but also uses one or two other repetitions. The main phrase she uses is Gentlemen of
the jury. She uses this phrase multiple times to make sure that the jury retains their attention to the
matter at hand. She would go on a rant or a story to help defend herself and Berkman she would either
end with Gentlemen of the jury or she would start her next rant or story with it. By doing this she is
bringing the juries attention back to her main point they are not guilty. Another set of repetition she
uses that isn t used as often is the phrase you are not called upon.

A man of a rugged countenance that was never lighted by a smile This could suggest to the reader that
Mr Utterson is a grim or evil character, which creates a sense of mild horror and mystery already
about this character. Now the writer again informs the reader about uttersons look, lean, long, dusty,
and dreary. This could imply that utterson is a creepy dark person, therefore again creating a sense of
horror and mystery about him. This sense of mystery is portrayed again by Stevenson, in the way he
describes uttersons lifestyle and personality. He never marked a shade of change in his demeanour.
This makes utterson sound like an old fashioned, cold hearted man, therefore creating a sense of
