Question 3: What kind of media
institution might distribute
your media product and why?
Vertigo Films
 Vertigo Films is an independent film company that was founded in 2002
with the specific purpose of making and distributing low-budget
commercial British movies. Since the inception of the company, it has
produced 28 films and distributed a further 35, therefore I think it would
be a feasible media institution to distribute my film, which fulfils the three
categories of low-budget, British and independent typical to the type of
film Vertigo have distributed in the past.
 An independent distribution company like Vertigo Films has an
extensive history of producing and distributing alternative films
aimed at niche audiences, therefore I think my product would appeal
to them. While many of Vertigo’s films are considered to be ‘laddish’,
for example ‘The Sweeney’ (2012) and ‘Monsters: Dark Continent’
(2014) which both feature largely male casts and prevalent themes of
violence and action, Vertigo themselves state on their website
www.vertigofilms.com that their films ‘span a range of genres and
audience taste’. This is clearly shown by the range of audiences that
some of their more recent films are aimed at, such as ‘Horrid Henry:
the Movie’ (2011) which caters to young audiences and would have a
pre-existing fan base to boost its popularity and success, compared
to films such as ‘Hammer of the Gods’ (2013) which is rated 18 and
falls into the action/adventure/history genre. Overall, Vertigo Films
have produced and/or distributed many drama films, due to the
extensive range of subgenres such as war, romance, action and crime
which allow for diversity within the genre.
 A potential attraction my media product has for an independent
institution is that, due to the prevalence of ‘genuine, relatable’
characters in the drama genre, often actors are more eager to play
roles inaccessible by other genres, in order to fulfil the primary focus of
character development and interaction. This means there is the
possibility of more well-known actors being enticed into the main roles
for dramas, which is a huge selling point for distribution companies
and can often carry a marketing campaign and impact greatly on the
success of a film.
 Vertigo Films are known for their eagerness to produce and distribute
films that their audiences approve of, however they are willing to take
risks and distribute original film plots that, while they may not appeal
to the masses and realistically may being unsuccessful (for example
‘Monsters: Dark Continent’ which has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of
18%), may also be very popular (such as ‘Streetdance 3D’ which has a
rating of 78%). As a result of this, I think that Vertigo Films would be
willing to distribute my film, in face of the potential risks regarding
new directors and unconventional subject matter.
 Regarding content, I think that even though Vertigo has a history of catering to
a more male audience, with the success of films featuring female protagonists
such as ‘Streetdance 3D’ they would be inclined to branch out and would be
willing to distribute my film. This would not only allow them to access a
temporary alternate audience to the type of viewer that enjoys films such as ‘The
Sweeney’, but could also result in a more long term expansion of audiences who
enjoy Vertigo’s films, as they will get a good reputation off the back of a film
about female empowerment and growth, rather than the objectification and
marginalisation of women that often features in ‘lads’ films.
 In addition to this, due to the potentially educational nature of my film, Vertigo
could see benefit in the form of support and publicity from organisations and
famous people who wish to spread a message about things like gender equality
and street harassment. This could not only be a positive movement in terms of
‘real life’ benefits but would also increase the profile of Vertigo Films and create
awareness and interest around the company, providing lasting profit.
