Task 3
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
What is distribution?
Distribution is the process of making a film for an
audience to view.
Small British Distributors can only distribute a film
through; Download,YouTube,The Company’s Website,
Social Networking and Personal Recommendation.
First the film is shown I cinemas to audiences, they are
then released on DVD and Blu Ray.They may then be
added to lists on Netflix or other film websites. Also
they may be added to a selection of films to watch on a
plane.
Example of Film distributors
A famous film distribution company that is based in Hollywood is 20th Century Fox.
Example of Film distributors
A smaller film distribution company isVertigo Films.
Paramount
Paramount is a possible distribution
company that could potentially be
interested in our film as they
distributed Shutter Island which I
studied and researched; it is similar to
our opening sequence. Our film links
to Shutter Island because both of the
characters are looking for someone
and investigating what has
happened. Also they use similar style
of editing and filming by going in and
out of focus on certain shots.
Who is the film going to appeal to?
Our film is going to appeal to more people globally if it
was to be distributed by Paramount, they think they can
attract more people and a wider audience. This is
because they are a distribution company that distributes
films all over; not just within the UK.The company feels
like their other films have reached to different audiences
across the world so our thriller film would attract a larger
amount of audiences too. Our film wouldn’t just attract
UK audiences because the distribution company is just
based in the UK; it reaches out to different countries
across the globe.
Self Distribution
Self Distribution would be a good option for our film as then
we could retain full control and rights over our film so we
have the choice over where our film is shown. Also we would
make better profits as we don’t have to give any share of the
profits to a distributor. But it would be very time-consuming
when having to chase buyers and complete all the
paperwork. It may also limit our options; distributors would
already have relationships with buyers who may only be
interested in purchasing packages of films. However, you
need to know a huge amount of knowledge about what's
legal and what’s not as well as making sure that you don’t
sign away rights to the film that will prevent you from
showing it somewhere else.
