What kind of media
institution might distribute
my product and why?
What is distribution?
 Distribution  is the selling of a film to a
  distributor who goes on to showcase the
  film in, for example, a digital or theatrical
  format.
Who is likely to be interested in
my film?
   I think that Focus Features would be interested in
    distributing my film because they have a history of
    making films with a dark theme. (E.G. The man
    who wasn’t there, Coraline) My film is also aimed
    at the independent market, and I would intend to
    instigate a platform release so the film is released
    to late-night audiences before general release. I
    also considered Lionsgate but this company is
    more American and would not fit the bill as their
    films tend to be simple and brash; my film is more
    complex and subtle.
Is your film going to appeal to just
UK audiences or worldwide?
   The film will have a much stronger appeal to
    UK audiences than any other due to the
    setting of the film and the nationality of the
    characters. Foreign audiences will be less
    likely to relate to the characters and the
    world in which they inhabit; it breaks
    immersion and spoils the realism if the
    audience cannot relate to what happens in
    the film, and this makes the threat seem
    further away and isolated, which is not the
    intention at all.
Marketing strategies and
release strategies
   Use of social media to promote the film
    through word of mouth.
   Midnight screening for alternative audience
    at edgy art-house cinema.
   Platform release; Small cinemas first, if it does
    well then roll it further to bigger cinemas. DVD
    sales soon after.
   Important to ensure that film is not released
    on the same date as a film in the same
    competing genre which will pull away
    audiences.
Issues with self-distribution
 Self-distribution
                  can be tricky because you
  have limited funds so usually an
  independent company will buy films
  made by other studios and distribute
  them by themselves. Realistically for a
  small independent film this strategy will
  not pay dividends as most of the budget
  will be spent on the film itself.
