This document discusses key aspects of targeting an audience for a media product, specifically an independent film opening title sequence about a boy joining the army. It identifies the independent film company Oscilloscope Laboratories and their documentary "Combat Obscura" as a comparable work. The target audience is identified as 18+ based on the subject matter, especially those living in army towns in the UK. Relevant hobbies, interests and jobs would include those connected to the military. The budget would be low as an independent documentary.

and selling of a film.
4. Independent Film Companies:
Due to our media opening title sequence no needing a high budget or having a complex story line we felt that it was
fitting to categorize our film into more of the independent film district.
When researching I came across an independent movie/documentary about the army called Combat Obscura by an
independent company called Oscilloscope Laboratories directed by Miles Lagoze.

This documentary was similar to our movie as it was based on the modern day army during the Afghanistan war.
The director of the documentary joined the marines at the age of 18 right after school. This also related to our opening
title sequence as a boy of the age of 18 joins the army.
Due to ‘Comabt Obscura’ being a documentary I would expect the budge of the movie to be very low.

5. Who would be the audience for your
media products?
■ AGE GROUPS
■ WHERETHEY LIVE
■ HOBBIESAND INTERESTS
■ EDUCATION/JOBS
■ INCOME
6. Age group we are aiming for:
■ The decided age group for our opening title sequence that we are targeting is 18+.
■ We decided to chose 18 as usually people join the maries from the ages 17-18.
Therefore if they had joined the army from those ages they would be able to relate
more to the movie and have a more emotion connection to the storyline.
■ Furthermore we decided on 18 as we want the movie to target a much more mature
age range, and most younger teenagers seem to find heartfelt/army movies less
enticing towards them.
■ The rating which we would give for our movie would be a 15.
7. Where they live?
This is an important part of where to distribute and advertise your movie. It is important
as some areas of e.g. Britain have a higher rate of people from… who join the army.
Places like:
■ Norfolk
■ Hampshire
■ Kent
If we targeted these place there would be a higher viewing rate as people would be able to
relate to the movie more and they would have much more of an interest.

8. Hobbies and interests and jobs:
Hobbies and interest is another main feature which affects your target audience. For
example if your movie is based on sci-fi then people with hobbies relating to fiction, space
or made up creatures, then this would lead them to be more interested in your movie.
For jobs it is similar to the above, where your job (which is usually your interest) would
influence you to watching films which you are interested into.
For our genre of film which is action, people who are interested into war/army or people
who are part or have a family member in the army would be targeted to watch our movie.
9. Income:
Audience member which have money to their disposal might prefer more glamorous films
as they would be able to relate to the characters lifestyle as this might appeal to them as
they are likeminded.
Moreover, this is similar to people who have less money at their disposal, they might
prefer movies which they can relate to.
I think that when people chose films to watch they either like to relate to the movie or
prefer to fantasies about what it would be like to live or be that e.g. character.
