The Time Machine, H. G. Wells
In The Time Machine, H. G. Wells explores the Victorian elements of 19th century society through
symbolism in the novel s depiction of the environment. Wells depicts the Time Machine as an
impractical and extravagant construction in order to criticize the Victorian values which the
Machine embodies. The White Sphinx, a statue the Time Traveler encounters when he travels the
future, serves as symbol of the decay and death of the Victorian ideals. The Time Traveler s
description of the Palace of Green Porcelain, a symbol Victorian extravagance, suggests that the
Victorian ideal will fail because of its indulgence and superficiality. In The Time Machine
, H. G.
Wellsuses the symbolism of environments in order to convey his criticism of the Victorian ideal
as an indulgent and superficial system of values that will lead failure. Wells depicts the Victorian
ideal as impractical by describing the Time Machine as having extravagant Victorian features. The
Time Machine is first introduced when the Time Traveler invites his guests, a variety of
respectable men including the narrator, into his laboratory. The narrator describes the machine,
focusing on its extravagant materials: Parts were of nickel, parts of ivory, parts had certainly been
filed or sawn out of rock crystal. The thing was generally complete, but the twisted crystalline bars
lay unfinished upon the bench... (Chapter 1). Because it is a technological wonder invented by a
landed gentry scientist, the Time Machine

The Importance Of Violence In Schools
When it comes to violence in schools, it s nothing new. Every day, the news media covers a story
over violence happening in school. My views over violence in school is there needs to be better
protection. The safety in schools is important because the kids in school is our future. They are our
future engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc., and if they don t have the protection they need, the kids in
schoolcan t learn. A couple suggestions to make the schools safer are practice the A.L.I.C.E. more
than once, go over what to do when an intruder is in the building, and how to protect themselves
and the people around them.
A way for the schools to be safer is to practice the A.L.I.C.E. A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert,
Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate (Eells). It s effective to practice it because the kids
and teachers have a chance to practice how to protect themselves during a real life events. School
intruder situations can last anywhere between five to seven minutes (Eells). When the school is
alerted that they are on lockdown, teachers are advised to use plain and simple language. They
are advised to use plain and simple language because it won t confuse the children and they can
escape quicker. If the class can t escape through the windows or through the doors, the school urges
them to barricade and lockdown the classroom. Barricading the classroom may include moving file
cabinets to the door, shoving desks against the door also, and covering all windows. After lockdown,

Narrative Essay On Basketball
Pop ! I collapse on the cold hard floor as immediate pain rushes to my left knee. All I manage to
utter are groans as my friend asks if I m okay and tries to lift me off the ground. I limp off in his
arms as I m assisted to the nearest bus stop. Once I m off the bus I observe that I m limping
badly and my knee is swollen to the size of an orange. A little voice in my head told me this wasn

Themes In Coming Of Age Stories
Coming of age stories are a very relatable genre of literature. The underlying plot line in coming of
age stories involve the main character, an adolescent, experiencing a pivotal event that changes their
point of view on life (Peyette, n.d.). The event marks the adolescent s transition into adulthood. The
event can often be referred to as initiation. The stories are thought provoking and interesting to read
because they contain numerous underlying messages and themes that can serve as tools to
understanding life. In the coming of agestories The Old People , Doe Season , and The Grave the
imagery of blood is portrayed in a more positive light in the story focusing on a male character than
in the stories focusing on female characters.
In the coming of age story The Old People , Ike McCaslin, the main character, is being mentored
by Sam Fathers. Sam is a family friend to the McCaslin s who also has a very interesting ethnic
background, and he has strong ties to the Native American culture. Ike shot his first deer after
chasing a large buck around the forest. To everyone s surprise, excluding Sam, the large buck
Ike chased around the forest was nothing comparable to the creature everyone else saw in the
forest. What lay before Sam and Ike was a small yearling. Sam took some of the yearling s blood
and put it on Ike s forehead as a type of Native American ritual (Faulkner, 1940). The ritual almost
seemed like Sam was cleansing Ike of his childhood and making Ike s

Literature
Formalism The Hershey Bar of Criticism
Formalism means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and refers to many different
types of critical work and analysis. But to make a complicated matter simple, we can say pretty
safely that formalism refers to critics or criticism that, first and foremost, emphasize the form or
structure of a work of art and assume that nothing in that form or structure is really accidental or
insignificant. That is, the formal elements in a work of art all mean something, in relation to one
another and to us. By looking at the architecture of art how it is constructed, what its elements are,
how they fit together, why they are there, and where they lead formalism assumes that we will make
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, what we mean by form can range widely not just between different works of art but
within a single work of art as well. For example, when examining a literary text, we may talk
about plot as a formal element by discussing its characters and their actions, and then we may focus
on characters and actions as formal elements by analyzing voice and motivation. In turn, we may
then decide to study voice and motivation as formal elements by considering things like word choice
, feeling, or theme. And so on and so on. Plot, character, action, voice, motivation, feelings, themes
when and where does a formalist analysis begin, and where does it end?
Some answer this question by saying it ends just before it reaches the real world. Formalist critics
are sometimes thought to ignore the real world in favor of the representational world that the work
of art creates, looking only at its intricate internal structures and landscapes. But formalist analyses
often go hand in hand with different types of criticism or concerns. For example, studying how and
when certain characters are introduced into a plot might lead to claims that sound more like
feminist criticism than formalist criticism. Similarly, someone studying those thumb prints on the
vase might end up asking us to rethink a few of our historical or anthropological assumptions about
a particular group of people who worked and played within a particular cultural context. Thus, by

The Stoning Of Soraya M Essay
The title of the film The Stoning of Soraya M. is a prelude to the story. The title is completely
relevant to the practice of a country where stoning is seen as simply carrying out the law. The
movie is set in Iran, the year is 1986, the landscape is cold and gloomy. There are no manicured
lawns or cookie cutter houses, lining the streets with painted pavements. No, here we see bare dirt
and rocks. It seems barren and dry with a few trees. A womancovered with a Burqa is walking
among the desolate streets. The sound of a sputtering car pervades the cold stillness of the air,
and we see the car stall at the bottom of a hill. The woman with the Burqa is walking quickly
down a rocky path. She seems to be rushing, as we hear a sound that, much like the sputtering car
breaks the silence of the landscape. A black dog laps up a liquid from a torn cloth that was laying
amongst the stones. The woman Shohreh Aghdashloo, playing the role of Zahra yells as she
chases away the dog from the black soaked cloth that laid on the ground next to the serenity of a
bubbling stream.
The woman cries as she picked up the remnants of the black cloth and we see bones. She takes
them lovingly in her hands as she washes them in the stream then, begins to dig what looks like a
grave with her bare hands. Her face is distraught, her hair is strewn all around her face and we
realize that the bones wrapped in the cloth was from a person. Zarah buried them in an unmarked
grave near the only beautiful

They are most known for playing a large role in Texas frontier during most of the eighteenth and

eastern Wyoming, they later established themselves from western Oklahoma to the TexasPanhandle

The Pros And Cons Of Plastic Bags
Since 1985, America has been using plastic bags due to them being waterproof and having
handles making them easier to carry goods. Paper and plastic has always been a huge
controversy in super markets through the preference of customers. Some customers prefer
having the paper bags standing up straight in the trunks of their cars. Other customers prefer the
plastic bags because of the handles making it easier to walk home and carry their goods.
Although both preferences are fine, all customers know the dangers of the plastic bag. Banning
plastic bags from stores and replacing them with only paper or reusable bags, will reduce
corruption of organic products, reduce CO2 emissions from creation and destruction of the
plastic and prevent harm upon Earth and its creatures. Plastic bags were first designed in 1965
by a Swedish company which later became known as the T shirt plastic bag ; made from high
density polyethylene, but It was in the late 1970s when Plastic bags first began to terrorize the
well being of humanity. More and more supermarkets in America began handing out plastic bags
as if they were candy on Halloween. The more plastic bags humans use, the more natural
resources are being destroyed. There are two different types of plastic bags that one may find in
any supermarket, high density polyethylene (HDPE) or low density polyethylene (LDPE). There
isn t much difference between them besides the fact that LDPE would be the tougher and more
durable bags you might find in department stores as well as any regular supermarket. They both
require the same materials for creation such as oil, gas and coal (fossil fuels). Fossil fuels are
the prehistoric resources formed by plants and animals that lived hundreds of millions of years
ago. These fuels won t be replaced for another millions of years to come, that is why they re
called non renewable resources. Plastic is very valuable, but humans decide that is more than
okay to litter these valuable resources than to recycle it and prevent some of the corruption and
over usage of resources we may not have in a distant future. Although plastic bags, as well as paper
bags, can be recycled in order to postpone running out of resources, the creation and

The Doll House by Henrik Ibsen
THE DOLL HOUSE The Society above Individual Freedom or The Suppression of the Woman
The author Henrik Ibsen used the play to elaborate on the irony of the 19th century culture of
restriction of individual freedom and excessive adherence to societal norm at all cost without
paying attention or having recourse to the core values and norms that brings about individual
happiness and freedom. Torvald Helmer tried to elucidate the abnormality of seeking individual
freedom instead of societal norm when he inquired from his wife; Nora ...And you don t
consider what people will say . The society in Ibsen s A Doll House is seen higher than the
individual person, for one to fit in he or she must strictly adhere to what the society demands and
not what the individual wants. Nora was quick to express her frustration on the demands of the
society when she replied Dr. Rank thus What do I care about tiresome Society? . Even the eating
of Macaroons was also forbidden by Torvald and Nora s Father, Dr Rank could not hide his
feeling upon the sight of Macaroons at Torvalds house when he inquired from Nora What,
macaroons? I thought they were forbidden here , Nora who is also held by the claws of societal
conformity had to lie to justify the possession of macaroons. The irony was played out when the
same Dr. Rank enjoyed the macaroons after Nora placed it in his mouth. Ibsen s setting of the
play also portrays a society where a woman cannot be seen to go against not only the orders of her

War Of A Reasonable Patriotism, By George Kateb, And...
A person has absolutely no choice in what country he or she is born in, yet it is commonly assumed
for one to be proud of that meaningless country, then openly criticized when the expectation is not
met. This sense of superiority over other countries, full of human beings with feelings and desires
who are no different than another s, is nothing more than a division of geographical birth places.
Ultimately, patriotismcauses arbitrary detachments between human beings for illogical reasons. It
is fueled by reactionary emotions rather than reason, and although it begins with good intentions, it
can also escalate to catastrophic levels.
To understand the role of patriotism in the modern day, it is helpful to discuss the following
articles: On Patriotism, by George Kateb; In Defense of a Reasonable Patriotism, by William
Galston; and American Patriotism is Unique, by Richard Morris. All three seek to guide readers
toward their own educated opinions regarding the topic, whether that is appreciation or scorn. In
George Kateb s article, he focuses on the philosophical history behind patriotism and refutes
arguments that are in support of it. He likens the love of country to the love one has for his or her
parents, and asserts that this comparison can lead to an exploitable mental confusion (Kateb). Kateb
also covers the ideas of Socrates and Rousseau, who believed that people owe their existence to the
state, and points out the inconsistencies in their theories. He continues the

Importance of Symbols Essay
Importance of Symbols
In all novels the use of symbols are what make the story feel so real to the reader. A symbol as
simple as a bird can mean so much more then what you see. Whereas a symbol as complicated as
the sea, can mean so much less then what you thought. It is a person perception that brings them to
the true meaning of a specific symbol. Symbols are message within a word that must be analyzed
to discover. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin conveys her ideas by using carefully crafted symbols
that reflect her characters thoughts and futures.
Early in the novel, while Edna attempts to escape from society s strong grasp, birds emphasize her

Mademoiselle Reisz says, it is a sad spectacle to see the weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering
back to earth (83). This bird symbolizes Edna?s struggle to become the master of her own life as
well as her failure to achieve this goal. Mademoiselle Reisz understands that Edna cannot fight
society and uses birds to demonstrate this knowledge. The bird, like Edna, is the only one who
possessed sufficient candor to tell the truth about society (23).
Finally, Edna moves to what she calls her exhausted pigeon house. The name that Edna chooses for
this house implies the defeat of a bird that, in turn, implies the defeat of Edna. Throughout Edna s
life, birds reflect her actions and feelings.
All through the book, sleep is an important and reoccurring subject. Edna often sleeps in order to
recover from the stress of her awakenings. After her first solo swim she feels the physical need
for sleep [begin] to overtake her; the exuberance which had sustained and exalted her spirit left her
helpless and yielding to the conditions which crowded her in (34). She needs sleep to repair her
disheveled emotions after her aesthetic and physical awakenings. Without sleep, Edna is physically
and mentally unable to realize her ambitions.
Another symbolic example of Edna sleeping occurs at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in
Cheniere Caminada. There, Edna is overcome by her emotions during service. She realizes that she

Descriptive Essay On Fishing
My father and I have be going on an annual fishing trip since I was eight. Every summer, we
would go out and sit for hours waiting for something to bite. Last year my father made a
poignant observation, he noted that in recent years there seemed to be less fish. He s been doing
this trip since he was my age and where he used to at least get some pull, he now has to wait
nearly twice as long for anything. I ve since come to realize that our ocean is running out of fish. We
are overexploiting a natural resource and doing nothing to stop it. The current large scale fishing
operations are not sustainable ecologically or economically.
large fish are disappearing from the ocean at alarmingly high rates. There has been a 90% decline
in the top predator fish abundance in the world between 1955 and 2000. Most industrial fishing
techniques are overly aggressive to marine environments in that they attract an abundance of
bycatch. The three primary techniques are surface long line Fishing where chains more than 100
kilometers long are floated in the ocean with thousands of baited hooks, fish aggregating devices
use long nets going down 300 meters that are left for days and just collect fish indiscriminately,
finally and perhaps the worst being bottom Trawling which involves a long heavily weighed net
dragged across seafloor. Fish aggregating devices are too indiscriminate in what kind of marine life
they capture. They are often deployed with the intention of catching skipjack

Abstract
Object
Lumbar spine surgery can be performed using a variety of anesthetic modalities, most notably
general or spinal anesthesia. The aim of this study was to determine if either anesthetic modality is
more cost effective in cases of lumbar discectomy or laminectomy spine surgery.
Methods
542 patients who underwent elective lumbar spine surgery at the University of Pennsylvania
between 2007 2011 performed by a single faculty surgeon were retrospectively identified, with 364
having received spinal anesthesia and 178 having received general anesthesia. Demographic,

This may partly be a consequence of the fact that the standard technique for general anesthesia is
endotracheal intubation. 6 Since prone positioning increases the risk of airway compromise,
anesthesiologists may prefer secure airway establishment with endotracheal intubation. 5 Another
reason could be that surgeons are able to perform longer operations using general anesthesia or that
there is greater patient acceptance and comfort. 15 Though these considerations should definitely be
taken into account, the health, efficiency, and cost benefits of spinal anesthesia cannot be ignored.
As with any retrospective study, the strength of the conclusions presented in this study are limited
by the potential for selection bias. We did employ a multivariate regression analysis to control for
possible cofounding variables, but recognize that we could not identify and account for all factors
that may have influenced cost. It should also be emphasized that regional variations in surgical care
and cost exist, which implies that our conclusions may not be applicable to other institutions. 19
These limitations would be overcome with future prospective randomized controlled studies at

In the United States, there are three basic systems in which healthcare are financed: private

This type of insurance is financed through governmental entities for the elderly, disabled
individuals, low income individuals or families, underprivileged children, Native Americans, and
military members and their families (Shi Singh, 2015). Depending on the services, individuals may
be required to pay a co payment dependent on the program and the financial abilities of the
individual or family (Shi Singh, 2015). The advantage of public health insurance is providing high
risk individuals and their families or veterans and their families with health insurance plans for
health care services at a discount or gratis. Many high risk individuals and their families would
not be able to afford health care services because of the lack of income or ability to work. Also,
one of the benefits of serving in the military is the health care supported by the government for
protecting the country. The disadvantage of public health insurance is the limitation of funds and
services subsidized by the government. Each of these programs are limited by eligibility

Informative Speech On Marilyn Manson
When most people hear the name Marilyn Manson they think of a deranged guy devoted to
demonic ways of music. In fact, people tend to forget that Marilyn Manson is just a stage name.
Marilyn Manson was born Brian Hugh Warner on January 5th, 1969. Knowing who Brian is
today you would ve never thought that he had a pretty normal childhood. Normal not in the
sense that he had a regular civilian life, but by having two loving parents and a great education.
The beginning of Brian s life would have you fooled that he would have never become who he is
today. Brian s mother, Barb Warner, was very over protective. So much so that she would evil eye
neighbors that dared looked at him. Brian s father, Hugh Warner, wasn t around a lot due to
fighting in the Vietnam War. Whenever Hugh returned, Brian was subjected to psychological

In the eyes of the media Charles Manson and Marilyn Monroe are essentially the same. That s what
Brian wanted to create. Someone that is able to both induce fear and be someone that could be

Manson got exactly what he wanted out of his music. He wanted to be someone that people
could look up to for his lyrics and deep meanings behind his persona, but some people take his
antichrist persona too seriously and go down a dark path. April 20, 1999 is a perfect example of
the media glorifying Manson s persona. At approximately 11:10 a.m. Eric Harris and Dylan

Musing New Hoods, Making New Identity
The Article, Musing New Hoods, Making New identities: Film, Hip hop Culture, and Jazz Music by
Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. addressed an important and conflicting aspect about the opportunities that
African Americans feel they have in modern society. He continues to address the idea of
guiltsploitation feeling guilt for going against one s culture to move up in social class, an idea
introduced by Henry Louis Gates and the different message that is received by society from the
underlying message surrounding African American films (Ramsey, 311). Stereotypes conceived
through movies and hip hop music create the identity and character through an authentic
representation that is expected of African Americans in modern culture. Although African American
films and the hip hop music industry have worked to build and identify a culture through the art
form, they have instead created a stereotypical image a different inner struggle has resulted that

The films represent the community and sometimes can alter how society think they should feel.
Ramsey discusses guiltsploitation , which addresses the guilt associated with not following a
certain cultural norm (Ramsey,311). The message of many films suggests that to prove that one is
proud of their Black heritage they must live in ghettos, do crack and rap (Ramsey, 311). This
representation creates a different message to the past and present youth can I climb the corporate
ladder and still be loyal to my race (Ramsey, 311)? Films have the power to create an image in
society that makes it difficult for the African American culture to feel comfortable going against
this social norm. This article suggests that many African Americans may avoid education, or a

Competition Vs. Monopoly Essay
1. Analyze the fast food industry from the point of view of perfect competition. Include the
concepts of elasticity, utility, costs, and market structure to explain the prices charged by fast food
retailers.
Firms within the fast food industry fall under the market structure of perfect competition. Market
structure is a classification system for the key traits of a market. The characteristics of perfect
competition include: large number of buyers and sellers, easy entry to and exit from the market,
homogeneous products, and the firm is the price taker. Many fast food franchises fit all or most of
these characteristics.

At the current prices, firms may sell as much product as they want, thereby maximizing profits.
This industry has a very high utility value. Utility is a measure of satisfaction or pleasure that is
obtained from consuming a good or service. If consumers feel as if they get a good meal, at a
good price, then they re satisfied. This customer satisfaction coupled with relatively low prices
keeps the industry profitable.
Another quality of perfect competition that may be overlooked, but is vital to this industry is the
ease of entry into the market. Start up franchises within this market structure can begin operating
with relatively low initial investments (compared to other industries). This is not the case where
monopolies are concerned. There are numerous barriers to entry into monopolistic market
structures, capital being one of the most prominent barriers.
If a new franchise an offer the consumer a quality product at a reduced price, then the chances of
success are greatly increased. For example, Chanello s and Little Caesar s offer discounted pizza
prices, and maintain the same quality as other pizza chains. These companies spend less on
advertising and more on the actual product. That s a very important concept in this industry,
because their quality product at this discounted price gives them a niche in the market. Once a
company establishes a niche, they become more visible to the

The Video London Underground Dinner Party
The video London Underground Dinner Party displays many different aspects of culture within
the London commuter community. The video shows a group of young people setting up a table

microcultures present on this one train cart made up of ten to thirty people at a time. Those
involved, receive very different and varying interactions with the others present on the train.
These responses and interactions represent the differences in cultures throughout this small train

Mutual Engagement And Shared Diagnosis
Mutual Engagement and Shared Diagnosis
Organizations must respond to their internal and external environment. Therefore, organizational
success heavily relies on leaderships ability to manage change. Unfortunately, many leaders struggle
to effectively lead change initiatives. In fact, Ashkenas (2013, para. 1) reported 60 70% of
organizational change initiatives fail to meet their objectives.
Change is difficult because all organizations cultures, structures, mission, and values are unique. As

Willy Loman Unrealistic American Dream
Former American Lawyer and politician Robert Ingersoll once said, In nature there are neither
rewards nor punishments; there are consequences. Ingersoll states that all actions have the same
general result, people do not get rewarded nor punished, but instead they suffer from any plausible
repercussions of these actions. As Willy Loman in Death of a Salesmanby Arthur Miller tries to
pursue his own american dream, he leaves behind a series of consequences due to the decisions he
makes throughout the novel. Willy creates an unrealistic american dream for himself, which causes
the family to struggle with him and his worthless beliefof himself.
Willy is too fond/proud of himself to realize that he sets the bar too high for himself and has goals

Basaltic Vs Rhyolitic Essay
Explain the differences between Basaltic, Rhyolitic and Andesitic volcanic eruptions with reference
to processes, which lead to the eruptions, the type of volcano produced and the reasons for the
differences between the material erupted by these volcanoes.
Volcanic eruptions are caused by a red hot liquid rock, called magma inside the earth s core.
Volcanoes erupt when magma rises to the surface of the earth, which causes bubbles of gas to
appear in it. This gas can cause pressure to build up in the mountain, and it eventually explodes.
When the magma bursts out of the earth, it is called lava. The type of magma in the earth can create

many problems and errors; one in particular that caught my attention was the mandatory minimum
sentencing laws. These laws basically set minimum sentences for certain crimes that judges cannot
lower, even for extenuating circumstances. The most common of these laws deal with drug offenses
and set mandatory minimum sentences for possession of a drug over a certain amount. Sentencing
procedures can vary from jurisdiction to Jurisdiction. Most of these laws are ineffective and causes
unnecessary jail overcrowding. Over the years... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, there was a case back in 2013 in Alabama where a 76 year old man, Lee Carroll
Brooker, was convicted of drug trafficking last year, and a judge sentenced him to life without
parole because of past robbery convictions in Florida. His son was also convicted. ( Roy Moore:
Life Sentence for Drug Violation Shows grave Flaw in Sentencing. AL.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 04
Dec. 2015.) Brooker lived with his son in Houston County, and court documents show police
found a marijuana growing operation there during a search in 2013. Alabama Chief Justice Roy
Moore released a statement on this case as the Supreme Court refused to overturn the case. I
mean really, this is just crazy how a petty drug offense can get a man life in prison and some
other fool is let off easy, after committing an armed robbery. The problem with LSD specifically
is that it comes in many forms. For instance, if a person is holding 1 hit of liquid LSD that is
placed on a strawberry can get up to 10 years in jail whereas another person with 100 hits of acid
in paper form may not even get a mandatory sentence if it weighs under a gram. The whole point
behind the legislation comes in response to the American public s desire to crack down on those
who sell drugs. According to The USCC (U.S. Sentencing Commission), fifty five percent of all
federal drug defendants are low level offenders, such as mules or street dealers.

Jack The Ripper Myths
This is not a book about Jack the Ripper.
That would be an understandable misconception his name is, after all, in the title, and multiple
books claiming to be about the victims or other surrounding topics do indeed end up focusing on
the Ripper himself. The Ripper s identity is, after all, one of the great historical mysteries and the
focus of over one hundred books. This is not one of them.
Although many pages have been devoted to concluding exactly how many women were killed by
Jack the Ripper, the most commonly agreed upon victims make up the so called canonical five:
Mary Ann Polly Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Liz Stride, Catherine Kate Eddowes, and
Mary Jane (or Marie Jeanette) Kelly. These women were found murdered in the

Political Humor And Satire In The Show Black-Ish
The show Black ish displays political humor and satire by using concepts such as confrontation,
and discursive integration. Throughout this paper, I will be explaining how Black ish displays
these concepts, as well as proving that this text can be considered politically humorous and
satirical. I will be taking examples from the texts Entertaining the Citizen and the article Let Us
Infotain You, as well as the show Black ish itself to help clearly provide evidence that shows that
show Black ish contains satire.
Black ish is a sitcom about a higher middle class African American family who lives in a suburban
neighborhood in California. The father is Andre also known as Dre Johnson who is an executive at
an Advertisement company. The mother... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Black ish Is a comedy show but at times it shows clips or images that are not more news like and
informative to the viewers. To show how Black ish I will be discussing one of the episodes of the
show from season three in comparison with the article Let Us Infotain You. In the episode 40
Acres and a Vote it used discursive integration. At the beginning, Andre had a slide playing sad
music with images of the Obama family on it. He then goes into a discussion speaking about how
Barrack Obama wasn t just important because he was the first black president, but because of he
gave a hand in showing African Americans that their votes not only were important, but they
counted. There then was a dramatization showing the process African Americans went through and
the abuses they experienced just to get to a place that showed their votes meant something. The
reason why I believe that this is a good example of the concept of discursive integration because
although Black ish is a comedy sitcom, it speaks on real life news situations that are happening
currently. In the article Let Us Infotain You the author s states, The blurring between news and
entertainment is exemplified by the fact that the National Enquirer s own reputation had been
enhanced and begrudgingly acknowledged by members of the mainstream press because of its
reporting during the O. J.

The motorcycle gang that is well known in many countries Hell s Angels was founded in the
San Bernardino in the United States in 1948. There are still many locations today. In order to
become a Hells Angels member, the person must have the right personality, must be white and
must be someone who has never applied to be a police officer or prison guard, a valid driver s

Particularly because people who are a part of street gangs like this, normally are in the lower
class and feel as though they have something to gain from this. These lower class people would
have their own values and would create conflict against the middle class norms and beliefs of
what is right and wrong. This culture involves being street smart and requires to be tough. Many
youth would join street gangs because they feel as if they are disadvantaged while in school, or
may not have an education opportunity. Being delinquent is a way of dealing with these
failures. Some youth grow up in an area where gangs are a way of life. Being in a gang can be
seen as a way to earn money or many other things that may be needed. Members may feel as if
they get better shelter, clothing and overall a better lifestyle by joining a gang mainly because
they feel as if they can depend on other members to provide them with what they need, in order
to feel a type of success and to feel as though they have status. Being apart of a group like this
gives them a sense of honour and may give them the feeling of meaning on their life to be a part
of something. They may also take pleasure in being feared around people in this way they feel as
though they cannot be downgraded back to the low class that they originated

  • 2. The Time Machine, H. G. Wells In The Time Machine, H. G. Wells explores the Victorian elements of 19th century society through symbolism in the novel s depiction of the environment. Wells depicts the Time Machine as an impractical and extravagant construction in order to criticize the Victorian values which the Machine embodies. The White Sphinx, a statue the Time Traveler encounters when he travels the future, serves as symbol of the decay and death of the Victorian ideals. The Time Traveler s description of the Palace of Green Porcelain, a symbol Victorian extravagance, suggests that the Victorian ideal will fail because of its indulgence and superficiality. In The Time Machine , H. G. Wellsuses the symbolism of environments in order to convey his criticism of the Victorian ideal as an indulgent and superficial system of values that will lead failure. Wells depicts the Victorian ideal as impractical by describing the Time Machine as having extravagant Victorian features. The Time Machine is first introduced when the Time Traveler invites his guests, a variety of respectable men including the narrator, into his laboratory. The narrator describes the machine, focusing on its extravagant materials: Parts were of nickel, parts of ivory, parts had certainly been filed or sawn out of rock crystal. The thing was generally complete, but the twisted crystalline bars lay unfinished upon the bench... (Chapter 1). • 3. The Importance Of Violence In Schools When it comes to violence in schools, it s nothing new. Every day, the news media covers a story over violence happening in school. My views over violence in school is there needs to be better protection. The safety in schools is important because the kids in school is our future. They are our future engineers, doctors, lawyers, etc., and if they don t have the protection they need, the kids in schoolcan t learn. A couple suggestions to make the schools safer are practice the A.L.I.C.E. more than once, go over what to do when an intruder is in the building, and how to protect themselves and the people around them. A way for the schools to be safer is to practice the A.L.I.C.E. A.L.I.C.E. stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate (Eells). It s effective to practice it because the kids and teachers have a chance to practice how to protect themselves during a real life events. School intruder situations can last anywhere between five to seven minutes (Eells). When the school is alerted that they are on lockdown, teachers are advised to use plain and simple language. They are advised to use plain and simple language because it won t confuse the children and they can escape quicker. If the class can t escape through the windows or through the doors, the school urges them to barricade and lockdown the classroom. • 6. Themes In Coming Of Age Stories Coming of age stories are a very relatable genre of literature. The underlying plot line in coming of age stories involve the main character, an adolescent, experiencing a pivotal event that changes their point of view on life (Peyette, n.d.). The event marks the adolescent s transition into adulthood. The event can often be referred to as initiation. The stories are thought provoking and interesting to read because they contain numerous underlying messages and themes that can serve as tools to understanding life. In the coming of agestories The Old People , Doe Season , and The Grave the imagery of blood is portrayed in a more positive light in the story focusing on a male character than in the stories focusing on female characters. In the coming of age story The Old People , Ike McCaslin, the main character, is being mentored by Sam Fathers. Sam is a family friend to the McCaslin s who also has a very interesting ethnic background, and he has strong ties to the Native American culture. Ike shot his first deer after chasing a large buck around the forest. To everyone s surprise, excluding Sam, the large buck Ike chased around the forest was nothing comparable to the creature everyone else saw in the forest. What lay before Sam and Ike was a small yearling. Sam took some of the yearling s blood and put it on Ike s forehead as a type of Native American ritual (Faulkner, 1940). The ritual almost seemed like Sam was cleansing Ike of his childhood and making Ike s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Literature Formalism The Hershey Bar of Criticism Formalism means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and refers to many different types of critical work and analysis. But to make a complicated matter simple, we can say pretty safely that formalism refers to critics or criticism that, first and foremost, emphasize the form or structure of a work of art and assume that nothing in that form or structure is really accidental or insignificant. That is, the formal elements in a work of art all mean something, in relation to one another and to us. By looking at the architecture of art how it is constructed, what its elements are, how they fit together, why they are there, and where they lead formalism assumes that we will make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, what we mean by form can range widely not just between different works of art but within a single work of art as well. For example, when examining a literary text, we may talk about plot as a formal element by discussing its characters and their actions, and then we may focus on characters and actions as formal elements by analyzing voice and motivation. In turn, we may then decide to study voice and motivation as formal elements by considering things like word choice , feeling, or theme. And so on and so on. Plot, character, action, voice, motivation, feelings, themes when and where does a formalist analysis begin, and where does it end? Some answer this question by saying it ends just before it reaches the real world. Formalist critics are sometimes thought to ignore the real world in favor of the representational world that the work of art creates, looking only at its intricate internal structures and landscapes. But formalist analyses often go hand in hand with different types of criticism or concerns. For example, studying how and when certain characters are introduced into a plot might lead to claims that sound more like feminist criticism than formalist criticism. Similarly, someone studying those thumb prints on the vase might end up asking us to rethink a few of our historical or anthropological assumptions about a particular group of people who worked and played within a particular cultural context. • 8. The Stoning Of Soraya M Essay The title of the film The Stoning of Soraya M. is a prelude to the story. The title is completely relevant to the practice of a country where stoning is seen as simply carrying out the law. The movie is set in Iran, the year is 1986, the landscape is cold and gloomy. There are no manicured lawns or cookie cutter houses, lining the streets with painted pavements. No, here we see bare dirt and rocks. It seems barren and dry with a few trees. A womancovered with a Burqa is walking among the desolate streets. The sound of a sputtering car pervades the cold stillness of the air, and we see the car stall at the bottom of a hill. The woman with the Burqa is walking quickly down a rocky path. She seems to be rushing, as we hear a sound that, much like the sputtering car breaks the silence of the landscape. A black dog laps up a liquid from a torn cloth that was laying amongst the stones. The woman Shohreh Aghdashloo, playing the role of Zahra yells as she chases away the dog from the black soaked cloth that laid on the ground next to the serenity of a bubbling stream. The woman cries as she picked up the remnants of the black cloth and we see bones. She takes them lovingly in her hands as she washes them in the stream then, begins to dig what looks like a grave with her bare hands. Her face is distraught, her hair is strewn all around her face and we realize that the bones wrapped in the cloth was from a person. Zarah buried them in an unmarked grave near the only beautiful ... • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Plastic Bags Since 1985, America has been using plastic bags due to them being waterproof and having handles making them easier to carry goods. Paper and plastic has always been a huge controversy in super markets through the preference of customers. Some customers prefer having the paper bags standing up straight in the trunks of their cars. Other customers prefer the plastic bags because of the handles making it easier to walk home and carry their goods. Although both preferences are fine, all customers know the dangers of the plastic bag. Banning plastic bags from stores and replacing them with only paper or reusable bags, will reduce corruption of organic products, reduce CO2 emissions from creation and destruction of the plastic and prevent harm upon Earth and its creatures. Plastic bags were first designed in 1965 by a Swedish company which later became known as the T shirt plastic bag ; made from high density polyethylene, but It was in the late 1970s when Plastic bags first began to terrorize the well being of humanity. More and more supermarkets in America began handing out plastic bags as if they were candy on Halloween. The more plastic bags humans use, the more natural resources are being destroyed. There are two different types of plastic bags that one may find in any supermarket, high density polyethylene (HDPE) or low density polyethylene (LDPE). There isn t much difference between them besides the fact that LDPE would be the tougher and more durable bags you might find in department stores as well as any regular supermarket. They both require the same materials for creation such as oil, gas and coal (fossil fuels). Fossil fuels are the prehistoric resources formed by plants and animals that lived hundreds of millions of years ago. These fuels won t be replaced for another millions of years to come, that is why they re called non renewable resources. Plastic is very valuable, but humans decide that is more than okay to litter these valuable resources than to recycle it and prevent some of the corruption and over usage of resources we may not have in a distant future. The Doll House by Henrik Ibsen THE DOLL HOUSE The Society above Individual Freedom or The Suppression of the Woman The author Henrik Ibsen used the play to elaborate on the irony of the 19th century culture of restriction of individual freedom and excessive adherence to societal norm at all cost without paying attention or having recourse to the core values and norms that brings about individual happiness and freedom. Torvald Helmer tried to elucidate the abnormality of seeking individual freedom instead of societal norm when he inquired from his wife; Nora ...And you don t consider what people will say . The society in Ibsen s A Doll House is seen higher than the individual person, for one to fit in he or she must strictly adhere to what the society demands and not what the individual wants. • 15. War Of A Reasonable Patriotism, By George Kateb, And... A person has absolutely no choice in what country he or she is born in, yet it is commonly assumed for one to be proud of that meaningless country, then openly criticized when the expectation is not met. This sense of superiority over other countries, full of human beings with feelings and desires who are no different than another s, is nothing more than a division of geographical birth places. Ultimately, patriotismcauses arbitrary detachments between human beings for illogical reasons. It is fueled by reactionary emotions rather than reason, and although it begins with good intentions, it can also escalate to catastrophic levels. To understand the role of patriotism in the modern day, it is helpful to discuss the following articles: On Patriotism, by George Kateb; In Defense of a Reasonable Patriotism, by William Galston; and American Patriotism is Unique, by Richard Morris. All three seek to guide readers toward their own educated opinions regarding the topic, whether that is appreciation or scorn. In George Kateb s article, he focuses on the philosophical history behind patriotism and refutes arguments that are in support of it. He likens the love of country to the love one has for his or her parents, and asserts that this comparison can lead to an exploitable mental confusion (Kateb). Kateb also covers the ideas of Socrates and Rousseau, who believed that people owe their existence to the state, and points out the inconsistencies in their theories. He continues the ... The bird, like Edna, is the only one who possessed sufficient candor to tell the truth about society (23). Finally, Edna moves to what she calls her exhausted pigeon house. He s been doing this trip since he was my age and where he used to at least get some pull, he now has to wait nearly twice as long for anything. I ve since come to realize that our ocean is running out of fish. We are overexploiting a natural resource and doing nothing to stop it. The current large scale fishing operations are not sustainable ecologically or economically. large fish are disappearing from the ocean at alarmingly high rates. There has been a 90% decline in the top predator fish abundance in the world between 1955 and 2000. Most industrial fishing techniques are overly aggressive to marine environments in that they attract an abundance of bycatch. The three primary techniques are surface long line Fishing where chains more than 100 kilometers long are floated in the ocean with thousands of baited hooks, fish aggregating devices use long nets going down 300 meters that are left for days and just collect fish indiscriminately, finally and perhaps the worst being bottom Trawling which involves a long heavily weighed net dragged across seafloor. This may partly be a consequence of the fact that the standard technique for general anesthesia is endotracheal intubation. 6 Since prone positioning increases the risk of airway compromise, anesthesiologists may prefer secure airway establishment with endotracheal intubation. 5 Another reason could be that surgeons are able to perform longer operations using general anesthesia or that there is greater patient acceptance and comfort. 15 Though these considerations should definitely be taken into account, the health, efficiency, and cost benefits of spinal anesthesia cannot be ignored. As with any retrospective study, the strength of the conclusions presented in this study are limited by the potential for selection bias. We did employ a multivariate regression analysis to control for possible cofounding variables, but recognize that we could not identify and account for all factors that may have influenced cost. The treatment of captives would be better since it was more important to integrate into the Egyptian military. The pharaohs weren t out to exterminate their enemies, but to take advantage and add to their army. In Egypt brutality is not regulated, but toned down in the new kingdom. In Israel and Judah warfare would be an integral part for the Jewish to reclaim their homelands. With warfare came several brutalities that would be illustrated in the book of Deuteronomy and Joshua. Volcanoes erupt when magma rises to the surface of the earth, which causes bubbles of gas to appear in it. This gas can cause pressure to build up in the mountain, and it eventually explodes. For many years, the criminal justice system has been criticized for its many problems and errors; one in particular that caught my attention was the mandatory minimum sentencing laws. These laws basically set minimum sentences for certain crimes that judges cannot lower, even for extenuating circumstances. The most common of these laws deal with drug offenses and set mandatory minimum sentences for possession of a drug over a certain amount. Sentencing procedures can vary from jurisdiction to Jurisdiction. Most of these laws are ineffective and causes unnecessary jail overcrowding. Over the years... His son was also convicted. ( Roy Moore: Life Sentence for Drug Violation Shows grave Flaw in Sentencing. AL.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Dec. 2015.) Brooker lived with his son in Houston County, and court documents show police found a marijuana growing operation there during a search in 2013. Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore released a statement on this case as the Supreme Court refused to overturn the case. I mean really, this is just crazy how a petty drug offense can get a man life in prison and some other fool is let off easy, after committing an armed robbery. The problem with LSD specifically is that it comes in many forms. For instance, if a person is holding 1 hit of liquid LSD that is placed on a strawberry can get up to 10 years in jail whereas another person with 100 hits of acid in paper form may not even get a mandatory sentence if it weighs under a gram. The whole point behind the legislation comes in response to the American public s desire to crack down on those who sell drugs. According to The USCC (U.S. Sentencing Commission), fifty five percent of all federal drug defendants are low level offenders, such as mules or street dealers. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the episode 40 Acres and a Vote it used discursive integration. At the beginning, Andre had a slide playing sad music with images of the Obama family on it. He then goes into a discussion speaking about how Barrack Obama wasn t just important because he was the first black president, but because of he gave a hand in showing African Americans that their votes not only were important, but they counted. There then was a dramatization showing the process African Americans went through and the abuses they experienced just to get to a place that showed their votes meant something. The reason why I believe that this is a good example of the concept of discursive integration because although Black ish is a comedy sitcom, it speaks on real life news situations that are happening currently.
