The Application of Scientific Management in Today’s...
The Application of Scientific Management in Today s Organisations
INTRODUCTION
The principle object of management should be to secure maximum prosperity for the employer,
coupled with the maximum prosperity for the employee... (Taylor, 1911, p.9)
With those evocative words, Frederick W. Taylor had begun his highly influential book; The Principles
of Scientific Management indicating his view regarding management practices. As one of the most
influential management theorists, Taylor is widely acclaimed as the father of scientific management .
Taylor had sought the one best way for a job to be done (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg Coulter, 2003,
p.39). Northcraft and Neale (1990, p.41) state that Scientific management took its ... Show more

University, for training purposes.
Next is the task aspect, which means the work of every workman is fully planned out by the
management...and each man receives...complete written instructions (Freeman, 1996, p.35). This
aspect is also fully consistent with the practice of McDonald s where employees have virtually no
discretion regarding how to prepare and serve any item of food (Levitt, 1972; Draft, 1986, cited in
Bergman, 2004, p.22).
The next technique of individualized work, is based on Taylor s conviction that personal ambition
would supersede the desire for general welfare as an incentive to exertion (Whyte, 1969, p.5). This is
almost in complete contradiction with businesses like McDonald s, where the focus is on teamwork.
Then, taking a look at the technique of scientific selection, various research conducted has confirmed
the importance of scientific assessment of prospective employees. But while fast food outlets would
utilise some formal system, it is extremely unlikely that highly complex forms of scientific selection
would be used, given the simplified nature of the jobs. This enables the conclusion that this technique
is not broadly utilised in those outlets.
And the last but certainly not the least is money bonus. Money is an all time favourite form of
incentive, with various monetary incentive schemes in existence. Organisations, such as Burger King

Spell Of Money
Breaking the Spell of Money The natural systems like forests, wetlands, lakes, oceans, grasslands,
rivers and the like; that we all depend on for sustainability are deteriorating majorly because of the
actions of humans. This diminishes the quality of our existence and it can be said to have been caused
by being selfish and shortsighted, consumerism to global corporates among others. Sanders however
proposes a different theory: confusion of financial wealth with real wealth. He explains how economy
treats the natural world through an analogy using humans. A human being a commodity, if one hand is
cut and sold, can we say that since the other one is there and the legs and other parts too and they seem
to be okay all is well; why then do we treat

I Want To Become A Neonatal Nurse
In my life I have thought about doing or being a lot of different things. But I think that I have made up
my mind and when I get older I want to be a Neonatal Nurse. The reason as to why I want to become a
baby nurse isn t really exciting. I want to be a neonatal nurse because it sounds really interesting and it
sounds like something I would actually enjoy doing for the rest of my life. Since I really want to
become a nurse I would have to create a couple habits in order to obtain my goal. The first habit I
would have to make is learning to listen to people better. I struggle with this because my brain is
always wondering off and I can t stay focused for a long time. I know they make medication for it and
I have it, I just don t take it even though I should. Another habit I would need to create is working

Water is probably my biggest fear. Not drinking water but giant body of water, like the ocean or a
lake. For some odd reason I always think I am going to drown every time I get in any type of body of
water. I think that if I am going to try and become less scared of water I need to learn how to do some
stuff first. First, I probably need to learn to swim. I know how to Doggy Paddle but I don t think that
counts when it comes to swimming Atlantic or Pacific. Another thing I need to do is try not to worry
as much when I go out on a boat or just go swimming. I get so stressed to the point that I can t even
have fun because I am so worried of drowning. I plan to reach my goals by doing a couple of things.
How I plan on learning to swim is I m going swim more in the summer in a swimming pool. I would
go to a swimming class but I went to one when I was four, five, and six and it didn t get me anywhere.
The second thing that I am going to do is learn how to relax. Learning how to relax is going to be

Best Buy Co, Inc.

Overview
Best Buy operates as one of the largest electronic consumer outlets in the United States. While Best
Buy is internationally known for selling a large variety of electronics, it also sells home office
products, appliances, and entertainment products. Best Buy chains are located predominantly in the
United States, Canada, Europe, and China. Since Best Buy s success is strongly dependable on the
consumer, its main goal is to do whatever it can, within reason, in order to make its customers fully
satisfied.
Its vision is centered around the People, technology, and the pursuit of happiness. As a corporation, its

With a market capitalization of over $10 billion, Best Buy is the dominant player in this industry.
Competition in this industry is high primarily because there is little to no switching costs if a buyer
chooses to shop somewhere else. Likewise, products are not set apart: buyers can get comparable
products at almost all of the different electronic stores. As a result, companies like Best Buy have to
compete on prices and non tangibles, such as customer service and friendliness.
The threat of potential new entrants into the consumer electronics retail industry is relatively low. Best
Buy has forged a reputation for selling mid to high end product and excellent customer service. It
would be difficult for an entrant to challenge the company. Furthermore, it would be difficult to
undercut incumbent firms who have already established relationships with suppliers to purchase
merchandize at the lowest prices.
The substitute products, that may take a portion of the market share away from the consumer
electronics retail industry, do not create a huge or direct hazard. Today s society and culture place a
big emphasis on technology and it is highly reliant on electronics. The bargaining power of buyers for
electronic products is extremely low because the buyers primarily consist of a weak and divided group
of individuals, and technology has became a vital need for most people.
The suppliers for companies in the market have

Building Elements Of A Successful Team
Proactive Planning
In meetings requested by managers, various agendas are discussed and explained. Of them, the plan to
establish self directed and high performance teams is spotlighted. The company needs to establish a
team that combines the different talent and work performance of its employees in order to accomplish
a particular goal and purpose. Concerns arise when some of the company s managers are experiencing
some teams that are self directed and high performing, while others are not. Therefore, discussions are
held which aim at familiarizing all employees with what it means to be self directed and high
performing.
In the process, they brainstorm on ideas like building elements of a successful team. If a manager has
not fulfilled the demand of having this type of team, they are focused on as needing more aid in
successfully moving forward towards the goal. At the time, those who are struggling are expected to
learn from those who are doing well in order for them to identify the mistakes and how to correct
them. In team building, through the help of leadership within the company, a team of people
collaborate and work together to achieve a common goal. (Midura Glover, 2005) In this case, leaders
are managers and they make decisions, clarify goals, build commitment practices and coach their
team. Team building is very important as it enhances collaboration. It also creates a greater likelihood
of commitment to the company by its employees and the overall communication

How To Quit Crutcher
Based on my experience with facing difficult decisions, I recommend Crutcher s Running Loose for
young readers who are dealing with similar issues. Running Loose is a novel that deals with Louie
having to face big decisions that is hard for him especially since he is having to face them at such a
stressful time in his life. The novel is relevant for today s young readers because in teenagers everyday
lives they struggle with facing big decisions all around them whether they know it or not.
An example from my personal experience would be one day when I was sitting in the bland walled,
loud, dirty cafeteria eating lunch, as any normal teenager seems to do in high school, my friends and I
were laughing and cutting jokes at one another. We were having such a wonderful time that we
neglected to notice that a student who happened to be one of our peers seemed to be looking down at
his food, sad, lonely, and needing comfort. By the time we saw the student sitting all alone it felt it
might have been all too late to ask if we should go sit with him. With the heart that I have, I felt so
sorry for the boy sitting alone, knowing that he was probably getting picked ... Show more content on

boy s life we impacted but mine as well. Facing a big decision just as Louie did, is horrifying and may

Women Go Into Leadership
Title:
Women go into leadership female style or male style?
The Pitch:
The debate about the difference in leadership style of women and men continues to attract attention
since women make strides into leadership position dominated mainly by men. Men have long been
holding these leadership roles and have defined styles accepted by people. Therefore, it is not
surprising that women are usual the focus in terms of the discussion on gender difference in leadership
styles. There seems to be great disagreement about the behaviour of women and men actually
performing such roles (Eagly, 2001). This disagreement on this focus can be divided into two groups.
One is the no difference camp, who commonly agreed that there are few differenced in the ... Show

In other words, communal aspects are more presented in a transformational leadership style. While
transformational leaders are portrayed to have a personalized view of each co worker and they often
take into account their colleagues individual needs and development (Eagly, 2003).
Based on Eagly and Johannesen Schmidt theory, female and male forms of leadership and
empowerment seem to be different. Communal and transformational characteristics are more
presented by women than men. So some women exhibited an open and participatory leadership style.
Additionally, women are perceived to work harder and take their work more seriously, and women are
less concern with salary than the recognition of a good done of job (Alvesson, 2009).
The focus of the debate concentrates on: In what context leadership style shows a similarity or a slight
difference between women and men and is there a specific female form of leadership? This
documentary shows the different leadership styles of women by case studies. It will investigate
whether or perhaps there is a specific female style of leadership preferred by a majority of women.
POV:
Social role theory of sex differences and similarities convincingly explains the sex differences in
leadership style. At the same time, there are certain expectations coming from co workers towards

humor race and misunderstanding Essay examples
Humor, Race and Misunderstanding
Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious.
Peter Ustinov
In On Being Crazy , DuBois defines crazy as behavior based on illogical perceptions. Both the
narrator and wayfarer agree that the wayfarer walking in the mud and becoming muddy rather than
walk along side a dirty nigger who is clean is crazy. DuBois illustrates that society prefers to cut off its
nose to spite its face instead of fixing the nose. Twain builds much of the Adventures of Huckleberry
Finn in the same manner. His commentary regarding the social injustice is buried within the story s
humor. While it isn t readily available on the surface, if one is so inclined to look, it can be easily

No one then, with exception of a few, understood the psychological impact the word had on the
recipient.
Twain s use of nigger illustrates that the nigger was not only a means of identification, but a
description of what one was. It stripped away the humanity and individualism of a person leaving a
shell, which was considered sub human. When a nigger wasn t a nigger, whites were astonished but
they didn t separate the nigger from the man. Huck, along with every other white person of the time
believed blacks couldn t be as intelligent as whites. ...Well, he was right; he was most always right; he
had an uncommon level head for a nigger quot; (Norton Anthology 266).
DuBois makes the same case in On Being Crazy . Niggers is dirty, he said. So is mud, said I.
Moreover I added, I am not as dirty as you at least not yet. But you re a nigger ain t you? he asked
(Dubois 2). Although the narrator isn t dirty or ignorant, the white wayfarer simply can t comprehend
that a black man could be anything other than a nigger. In fact, it is the white man who using the
standards of the day embodies the personification of a nigger.
Huck is truly a product of his time. Although he is our hero, he too is guilty of engaging in racial
misunderstanding, as evidenced when he tries to protect Jim. quot; When we was ready to shove off

In 2001, 2003, and 2006 ICANN and NTIA would move into an agreement towards the execution of
the IANA functions. NTIA on July 2, 2012 gave ICANN a genuine reasonable procurement procedure,

The Philosopher Who Was An Ancient Greek Philosopher Essay
Today I chose to talk about the philosopher Plato who was an Ancient Greek philosopher who founded
the Academy and is also one of the authors of philosophical works of a lot of influential works in
Western civilization. Plato was born around the times of Circa in 428 B.C.E. and because of the lack
of many sources from his time period, unfortunately, much of Plato s work in his life has been
reconstructed by scholars throughout his writings which were discovered and analyzed by very
intelligent historians. Both of his biological parents came from the Greek aristocracy. His father
named Ariston was a descendent from the kings of Athens and Messenia. On the other hand, was his
mother named Perictione, who is said to be related to the 6th century B.C.E. the Greek statesman
solon. Even though some scholars tend to believe that Plato was named by his grandfather whose
name was Aristotle s who essentially helped Plato with his traditional name. Plato was also claimed to
be the oldest son in his family. Many historians say also that Plato was his nickname and that it
referred to be because of his broad physical physique. Although, there is not much evidence of that
they say that because of these young boys gave him the name Plato before Aristotle s was even born.
Plato was also assumed to be taught by some of the Athens s most intelligent educators around that
time. As well, the curriculum would have been from the doctrines of Cratylus and Pythagoras as well
as Pamenides. This

Optical Filters Used For Edge Detection
In image processing, a Gabor filter, named after Dennis Gabor, is a linear filter used for edge
detection. Frequency and orientation representations of Gabor filters are similar to those of the human
visual system, and they have been found to be particularly appropriate for texture representation and
discrimination. In the spatial domain, a 2D Gabor filter is a Gaussian kernel function modulated by a
sinusoidal plane wave. Simple cells in the visual cortex of mammalian brains can be modeled by
Gabor functions.[1][2] Thus, image analysis with Gabor filters is thought to be similar to perception in
the human visual system. A set of Gabor filters with different frequencies and orientations may be
helpful for extracting useful features from an image.[7] In the discrete domain, two dimensional
Gabor filters are given by, G_c[i,j]=B e^{ frac{(i^2+j^2)}{2sigma^2}}cos(2pif(icos heta+jsin heta))
G_s[i,j]=C e^{ frac{(i^2+j^2)}{2sigma^2}}sin(2pif(icos heta+jsin heta)) where B and C are
normalizing factors to be determined. 2 D Gabor filters have rich applications in image processing,
especially in feature extraction for texture analysis and segmentation.[8] f defines the frequency being
looked for in the texture. By varying heta, we can look for texture oriented in a particular direction. By
varying sigma, we change the support of the basis or the size of the image region being analyzed.

Self-Destruction In Hamlet
Hamlet, a tragic hero with a feigned madness seeking revenge for his deceased father, kills everyone
in his path and finally succeeded in taking vengeance for the murder of his father by killing the
murderer, Claudius for good. Hamlet s consistent desire to seek revenge for his father s murderer, led
him to foreseeable yet tragic downfall. In Hamlet, Shakespeare utilizes the acts of revenge throughout
the play to show self destruction and confliction in through characters such as Hamlet.
The theme of revenge causing self destruction is established in act two of the book by Hamlet himself.
Hamlet proclaims: O, vengeance! Why, what an ass am I! This is most brave, That I, the son of a dear

Marie and Howard Dahn obvious know the value of next education. The very reason why they ask this
is to see if the person writing the essay knows that reason or has their own. I believe I have come up
the many reasons for why I value a next level of education. I believe one of the many reasons is
knowledge, the creation of new bonds, and in general to experience new things. These are the some of
the reasons why I believe next level education is important. Like I previously said, Knowledge is a big

employment with either large international corporations, or even local vendors serving the community
within the area where one lives. In an ongoing effort by our research team to determine if the
difference in the wages from our sample population of men and women, who have various levels of
education, does in fact make the difference. We are looking to use an additional test to discover
whether or not we can inconclusively state that from our previous test conclusion that our team
believes that there is a difference in the wages of the sample population.

After that, the team had to calculate the test statistic by using the Appendix B worksheet rank sum
sample size and rank sum from each group. The following formula gives the results of that worksheet
Our team then made our decision that because the test statistic of 18.51 is far greater then that of the
Chi square value at v = 4,  = .05 in Appendix E, we must reject the null hypothesis that all c
populations are the same (2007). These results can be viewed in Appendix D, where at the significance
level of .05, it shows the Chi square of 25.75, which is still far above the level for the team to reject
the null hypothesis that all c population medians are the same. The team continues the research by
giving details to the nonparametric test we used and why we opted to use it.
Explain Kruskal Wallis Test
The use of the nonparametric test teaches all researchers to use smaller sample, normality is not a
requirement, and can be used for ordinal (ranked) data. The reason for our team choosing the Kruskal
Wallis test is that; one, it is the corresponding test to the One Factor ANOVA test that we ran in the
previous research paper of week three; two the team was able to compare independent samples from
the five different groups even though the sample sizes were not the same, but did include the
minimum of five

E-Learning System
CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION E Learning is the imparting of knowledge via electronic means. Transfer of
skills and expertise has been enabled by computers and networks.
At present time, Technology or to use a computer is a common or very popular when it comes into
marketing fields, government agencies, business firms, schools and even homes. It makes almost
everything possible to do by just using a computer. With the application of information technology, it
helps people to do anything, anywhere at any time; it makes their work more efficient because it only
takes a small time to get a details.
According on our research, E learning, sometimes termed computer based training (CBT), internet

E Learning can be delivered and supported using a variety of electronic media, but is also the ideal
complement to a traditional education or training program delivery. These technologies are used to
create and deliver individualized, comprehensive, dynamic learning content that facilitates learning,
anytime and anywhere. It is an innovative approach to communicating almost any type of instructional
information. E Learning can be delivered and supported using a variety of electronic media but is also
the ideal complement to a traditional education or training program.
E Learning is interactive and hands on. The use of a variety of multimedia increases student
involvement and reinforces the learning experience. This leads to increased retention and a stronger
grasp of the subject at hand. E Learning is flexible. Learning can take place anytime and anywhere, as
long as the necessary equipment is available. E Learning provides consistent and effective training. All
of the target learners can participate simultaneously and receive the same information, reducing the
variability introduced through multiple sessions in different locations.

Dashing Dreams, Raising Realism
Dashing Dreams, Raising Realism Everyone is told that they can be anyone they want to be, be
anything they want to be, and go anywhere they want to go. I took this to heart and determined that I
would go to my dream college, Washington University in St. Louis, and become an astounding author
with an English degree to be proud of. However, I knew that I might need a backup college, and I
settled upon Kansas University. Although the choice between the two originally seemed clear to me,
after doing extensive research, my views were quickly morphed. While most people would chase after
their dream college, I have found that facing reality, and choosing the so called backup college, is by
far the better choice. Education has always been my primary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

While going to a noteworthy school is delightful, the magnificence of the school comes at a price.
While Washington University is one of the best colleges in the country, they are known to be
extremely expensive. Not only that, but their scholarships are much harder to obtain. In addition, even
before trying to repay loans, tuition there costs about twice as much as going to Kansas University.
When paying off student loans, even with scholarships, students may find themselves paying around
77,000 dollars more than their original loan balance of around 180,000 dollars. Conversely, Kansas
University is much cheaper, allowing good students to take out a loan of less than 100,000 dollars.
Additionally, obtaining scholarships from Kansas University is much easier than trying for one at
Washington University. Future students from in state such as myself will find themselves having to
pay less tuition and travel costs. Although Washington University may be nicer, its ridiculous prices
make it a worse alternative to the much more affordable Kansas University. I always dreamed of
attending the glorious Washington University in St. Louis, but when doing concrete research, I found
that Kansas University may be a better alternative. Their educations vary little, but Kansas University
s social environment is much less competitive. In addition, Washington University offers a much

Tecumsehs confederation Essay
Tecumseh was a very significant Native American who gave his life for what he believed. He knew
that the Americans were a tremendous threat to all Indian tribes, and realized that the Indians would be
destroyed one by one if not united. Tecumseh created a confederation of thirty two tribes in hopes that
the Americans would recognize their borders and thus put a halt to westward expansion. His
confederation may have succeeded if it were not for the mistakes made by his brother, Laulewasika,
the Americans violent actions towards the Indian tribes, and the unwillingness of the different tribes to
cooperate.
Tecumseh was born in March of 1768. His real name was Tecumtha, which meant quot;panther lying

Tecumseh fell in love Rebecca and soon asked her to marry him. She told him she would if he would
give up his Indian heritage and come live with her as an American (Blodgett). Tecumseh took a month
to make up his mind and finally decided that he could not abandon his people. It broke his heart, but
he told her that he could not marry her and they went their separate ways (Patriot 147).
Tecumseh s childhood greatly influenced how he acted as an adult. He knew that the Americans had to
be stopped but he did not want to fight them. When fighting was the only choice, he had a reputation
for his mercy. He despised the torture of prisoners and other cruel actions done by both sides during
warfare. He was an honest man, and was trusted by both the Americans and Indians (Dictionary 1125).
Tecumseh felt that the Americans were weakening his people by introducing them to liquor and by
over hunting the animals in order to attain their furs (Blodgett). They were also a huge threat to the
Indians because they were constantly taking more and more land away from single tribes. The
Americans would seek out small, weak tribes and offer them money and goods for land which was not
even theirs. The tribes all shared the land, and Tecumseh felt that no one chief could sell away the land
(Blodgett). He believed that by creating a confederation of all the Indian tribes, equaling the American
states, the government would be forced to recognize them as a united body and

Conformity And Rebellion In Popular Culture Analysis
Conformity and Rebellion in Popular Culture and Sexuality In the first lecture for this class, Professor
Creekmur asked the question; is sex popular (Creekmur Aug. 20)? As he often does in the course,
Creekmur doesn t give a simple, clear cut answer, but instead offers a paradox, that while sex is an
aggressively private act, it is also a good that is consumed, in our magazines and on our televisions.
This paradox ultimately sets the stage for the rest of this class, demonstrating how something as
intimate as one s sexuality can come to reinforce popular conventions of normalcy and deviancy
within society at large, and what this essay will attempt to address.
One of the first ideas that Professor Creekmur introduced to class was the fact ... Show more content

Specifically, Winkler references groups like the Traditional Values Coalition, which to this day

a means of discrediting his work, this continuing smear campaign of Kinsey s work is indicative of
what often happens when challenges to popular conceptions of normalcy are confronted by
conservative forces; challenges of sexual and moral deviancy, very similar to how bachelors were

Analysis Of The Poem Exposure By Wilfred Owen
The poetry written in World War I was mostly dark and told of the terrible conditions of the war. The
poetry shows how the soldiers suffered and struggled through unimaginable conditions. The
conditions of the weather and battle were often brutal and uninhabitable; yet the soldiers endured these
conditions. Nature was often a slow and painful killer. War is a constant in an ever changing world. It
is easy to see that fighting is an almost futile attempt to conquer and prevail. The poetry from the war
can express the pain of war in a beautiful manner. Through writing the authors can share the pain of
what they experienced at war. The difficulty of war is viewed differently through the eyes of these two
narrators, and while one views nature as the true enemy, the other sees the loss of people back home as
the hardship.
The point of view a person has is often shaped by their life experiences. The reader can see how war
can change a soldier s ideals as they experience it. In the poem Exposure, Wilfred Owen writes about
the mental toll war takes on the human mind. He writes about how the soldier is worried by silence,
sentries whisper, curious, nervous but nothing happens . This shows the soldier s paranoia during the
night. The soldier s cannot rest even though it is quiet, because they are afraid of what they cannot
hear. Their paranoia is taking over their minds and making them nervous about what is to come. Owen
tells us how the cold and slightly changing conditions wear and

Types Of Cross Sectional Aspect Ratio
Specimens characterization:
The test specimens were divided into three series (R1.5, R2.0 and R2.5) on the basis of cross sectional
aspect ratio, and complete details of the test columns are summarized in the table 1 and Fig. 1. The
specimen identification convention, which are utilized in Table 1, is in accordance with the first letter
R defining the rectangular column. In addition, the following numbers 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 refer to
different sets of cross sectional aspect ratios. The following letter and number refer to the volumetric
ratio of hoop (H) reinforcement with 0 denoting plain concrete, 1, and 2 denoting transverse
reinforcement of 0.3 and 0.6% volumetric ratio, respectively. The third last symbol L and number
following it refer to the number of layers of CFRP wrap. The final symbol in the specimen
identification of M or C refers to monotonic uniaxial loading and complete unloading/reloading of
cyclic axial loading patterns. In this paper, complete unloading/reloading refers to unloading from the
envelope curve to zero stress followed by reloading to the envelope curve. For further clarification,
R2.5H2CL4, for example, had aspect ratio 2.5 and hoop steel reinforcement ratio 0.6% .As well,
before it was tested under cyclic axial compression loading, this specimen was externally confined

Different Aspects That Go Into Making A Business...
There are many different aspects that go into making a business successful. Businesses need a strong
vision, great leaders within the organization, strong sales, a successful sales team, a steady stream of
revenue as well as a way to produce the revenue or sales coming in. Two important aspects of business
that are not always brought up, is profit and the cost to operate the organization. Often times managers
only look at the net profit or net revenue on their Profit and Loss statements without breaking down
the numbers or cost of doing business. Even if an organization is successful and has a great profit
margin at the end of the month, quarter or year, does not mean they do not need to analyze the cost of
the operations. Analyzing those costs cannot only help an organization become profitable, when they
are unprofitable, but can make them more profitable even if they show a healthy profit. Finding ways
to cut cost or become more efficient with the operations can lead an organization in the right direction
when it comes to their finances (Ahmed, S., 2016). When small businesses are involved they need to
pay close attention to their cost and controlling their cost. Profit planning is one way to manage cost
and use the budget to create ways for the managers to recognize how to work cheaper and more
efficiently. One small miss step with over purchasing or overages on production time or inventory can
cost a small business money, when this happens it can directly affect their

Compensation Cases and Their Impact on China and Japan
History and the notion of compensation are two key aspects in the study of Sino Japanese relations.
During the 1980s, the opening up by the People s Republic of China s government about war atrocities
led a number of victims to seek reparations and apologies from Japan. Compensation cases were
brought forward from the 1990s and broke the silence about what had truly happened during the war.
Moreover, the rapid spread of new information about the past prompted increased tensions between
the two countries that had previously ignored the issue in order to privilege economic and diplomatic
cooperation. To date, the affiliation between China and Japan seems to have deteriorated significantly

The VAWW NET (Violence Against Women in War Network Japan), Chinese War Victims Lawyer s
Research Committee (now Chinese War Victims Compensation Claim Group), Society to Support the
Demands of Chinese War Victims (Rose, 2005, p.77), etc. are all joint organizations fighting for the
rights of the victims and trying to force Japan into taking legal responsibility for its actions and it is
still a work in progress today.
The creation of these Sino Japanese groups emphasizes the fact that the problem of compensation was
just as important for both sides and signified that the history issue hadn t been dealt with properly. The
280 members of the Chinese War Victims Lawyers Research Committee were ready to defend Chinese
victims in their lawsuits against Unit 731, the Comfort Women System, forced labour, etc. among
many more. Their research played a significant role in providing evidence (Rose, 2005, p.76) that
undermined Japan s stance on lack of sufficient evidence in order to accept legal liability for their
actions (Tow, 2009 ). The involvement of academics and citizens were equally important as they too,
discovered compelling evidence incriminating Japan and organizations such as Suopei counting over

movement in order to continue on their quest for justice and recognition (Rose, 2005, p.77). Numerous

The Conflict in Darfur and United States Involvement
The conflict in Darfur refers to the fighting that is happening in the western region of Sudan known as
Darfur. These fights have been taking place since 2003 and have continued to today. Similarities can
be made to the Rwandan Genocide; there is a government funded and armed militia that is not
officially supported by the government that is killing a local population. The citizens of the region of
Darfur that are being killed are not Arabic, like the majority of the rest of Sudan is, however, they are
more similar in culture and other aspects to the citizens of South Sudan, Sudan s neighboring country
to the south with which Sudan has had multiple wars with. Despite the fact that there is a militia that is
killing citizens, there are also other militias that are fighting for the Darfuri people. These two sides
have been fighting each other for close to ten years. Even though citizens of a certain group are being
targeted by a militia, the conflict in Darfur is not a genocide. The United States should not get
involved militarily in this conflict because it is only a conflict and not a genocide. It is a war between
two groups over disputes between these groups. Instead, the United States should use diplomacy to
help end the conflict happening in Darfur.
A genocide is the systematic attempt to eliminate a group of people based on race, religion, ethnicity,
or other defining group characteristic. This should not be misconstrued with a war between two
groups where each group is

Generals Die In Bed Analysis
The harsh reality of war distinguishes the leaders that exert power and the followers that can t. In the
novel, Generals Die In Bed by Charles Yale Harrison, Harrison outlines the hardships of a soldier s
life. As the story progressed the soldiers learned the bitter truth of war when they realized how small
of a saying they had in the grand scheme of things. The soldiers had no control over their own
decisions as their lives are exploited for the benefits of others.
The soldiers were victims of the manipulative actions by their officers. In the war, the generals
manipulated the soldiers thoughts and emotions and used them as their pawns. An example is when
one of the generals delivered the news to the soldiers about the Germans torpedoing a hospital ship,

The wounded soldiers with amputated limbs sunk to the bottom instantly with the salt stingy in their

by machine gun fire ... the laughing men on the U boat ... the amputation cases went to the bottom

Ww1 Historical Analysis
The Interpretation of World War One from the 1920 s to the Present
The interpretation of history has changed based on differences such as the time and place of the person
who is recording it. These two similar texts being compared are separated by the date the book was
written. The older book was written in 1921, by Ferdinand Schevill, and is titled A Political History of
Modern Europe from the Reformation to the Present Day . The second book, was written in 2007 by
Lynn Hunt, is titled The making of the West: Peoples and Cultures . In both of these textbooks the
history of World War I is discussed, but the way the history is interpreted shows a large quantity of

This growth in population leads to the idea of marriage reformation. Reformers thought that
improving both the quality of children born and the conditions within marriage would solve the
population problem (Hunt 766). Since populations were becoming too large, many people believed in
eugenics, defined as a set of ideas about the importance of producing superior people through
selective breeding and of preventing the disabled and others deemed inferior from polluting one s
nation or race (Hunt 767). These reformation ideas leads to improved marriage laws throughout
Europe. Countries legalized divorce, and Sweden even made men s and women s control over
property equal. Hunt s text focuses on the social and cultural issues that lead up to 1914, when the war
erupts. Schevill s text takes a different route into the road to the start of the First World War.
In Schevill s textbook, there is no focus on the social and cultural issues of the Europeans, but instead
a focus on diplomatic issues. Schevill titled this chapter leading up to World War I European
Diplomatic Relations from 1871 to 1914 . Schevill gives a detailed look into the European treaties and
alliances that would cause the outbreak of the war. One of the important topics discussed leading up to
World War One in this text is the European alliances. The text refers to these as the triple and dual

The main structure of a shonen is when the main character is faced with a set of challenges and always
seems to be able to overcome them through different means, usually through training or repetitively

anime has a trend of being shonen goes back to the primary viewers of mainstream anime being
children. The repetitive and simple plot of shonen anime keeps the children viewers engaged while not
having to follow a complicated plot that goes over their head. Mainstream anime almost always

Neonatal Reflex Essay
Archaeologists have traced the existence of Homos (humans) in the taxonomic rank of Genus to about
2.5 million years ago. During this long period of time, until the subspecies Homo sapiens appeared,
was a period when humans are not only the predator but also the prey. Newborns are especially
vulnerable because they do not have the strength, or the ability to escape danger, thus newborns must
develop some other mechanism to survive and are especially sensitive to their environment. Thus,
babies are born with a number of infant reflexes to help them achieve that. Infant reflexes or neonatal

Literature Review
The essential problem presented in this research deals with instructors taking the role of online
educators without proper support and application of research that clearly describes an effective
process that constitutes achievements and goals. Thus, several online teaching and learning
dimensions are presented to explain many successes and barriers that are often experienced today in
online instruction.
When considering course design, novice online instructors may consider the use of discussion boards
as a technique to promote critical thinking. Asynchronous online discussions are an important
communication tool for distance education (Bai, 2009). Many researchers agree that asynchronous
discussions encourage reflective learning, in depth thinking and meaningful processing of information
(Bai, 2009; Black, 2005; Dixson, Kuhlhorst Reiff, 2006; Gilbert Dabbagh, 2005; Hara, Bonk Angeli,
2000). However, the actual quality of these discussions has become a major concern regarding

The Dangers Of Workers Rights During The 19th Century
The industrialization period that took place during the 19th century brought forth a great deal of
change for workers. Although these changes made for more efficient production, the workers also
faced harsh work conditions, which were extremely dangerous as well as believed to be the cause of
early deaths for some. These conditions included long work hours without breaks, exposure to
pollution and new machinery, and the use of child labor. Fortunately, the critique of these harsh
conditions led to improved conditions for workers and new laws protecting the worker rights. During
the 19th century as industrialization was taking over many people were looking for work and waiting
in long lines to obtain jobs in mills and factories. As a result, mill and factory owners, knowing this,
took advantage of the workers that they hired and required them to work long hours for small wages.
It was all too common for workers to work 12 hours, or more, daily in hot and uncomfortable
environments. In addition to these long hours, the workers would not receive a break for lunch or to
rehydrate their bodies. This led to exhaustion for workers and increased the danger of working in these
mills and factories. Employers would run their business with strict discipline, in a prison manner, to
enforce their workers to maintain their pace. Reformers, such as Robert Owen and Titus Salt, were
employers known for looking after their workforce and the safety of the workers. These reformers

Right Choice In Antigone
Maeve Moynihan
Miss Stokes
English II
24 September 2014 ANTIGONE In Antigone written by Sophocles and translated by David R. Slavitt,
Antigone decides to risk her own life to be able to bury her brother in a respectful way in which she
thinks is right. Antigone had an enthusiastic determination about it, approached it without regret, and
also choose her destiny and her sisters. Her father s fate was a big affect on if she was going to
precede with burying her brother or to no give him the respect like the rest of the surrounding
community. Even though Antigone risked her whole life and her entire future she made the right
decision by burying her brother and sticking to her own judgment. Antigone thought positively from
the beginning and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She knew that in her mind, knowing her fathers fate that this was definitely the right choice. She did
not care about other people s options and the consequences were not affecting her at the time they
were decided. Antigone feels, as though that this is a good way to die, it s a way that she is going to be
remembered for what she has done. Sister, forbear, or I shall hate thee soon, and the dead man will
hate thee too, with cause. Say I am mad and give my madness rein to wreck itself; the worst that can
befall is but to die an honorable death. (92 96). Because Antigone approaches her consequences
(death) without regret, her demise takes a tone other than the tragic feel of the suicides of Haemon and
Eurydice. By choosing this path she did not only choose her life/future but she also the rest of her
family s. Her whole family will be affected by her choice of following her father s fate, either now or
in the future. Antigone and Ismene have a very in depth conversation before it takes place. Ismene is
somewhat upset about the choice Antigone is about to make not only for her sake but also her own
destiny. Antigone: Claim not a work in which thou hadst no

The Application of Scientific Management in Today s Organisations INTRODUCTION The principle object of management should be to secure maximum prosperity for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for the employee... (Taylor, 1911, p.9) With those evocative words, Frederick W. Taylor had begun his highly influential book; The Principles of Scientific Management indicating his view regarding management practices. As one of the most influential management theorists, Taylor is widely acclaimed as the father of scientific management . Taylor had sought the one best way for a job to be done (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg Coulter, 2003, p.39). Northcraft and Neale (1990, p.41) state that Scientific management took its ... Next is the task aspect, which means the work of every workman is fully planned out by the management...and each man receives...complete written instructions (Freeman, 1996, p.35). This aspect is also fully consistent with the practice of McDonald s where employees have virtually no discretion regarding how to prepare and serve any item of food (Levitt, 1972; Draft, 1986, cited in Bergman, 2004, p.22). The next technique of individualized work, is based on Taylor s conviction that personal ambition would supersede the desire for general welfare as an incentive to exertion (Whyte, 1969, p.5). This is almost in complete contradiction with businesses like McDonald s, where the focus is on teamwork. Then, taking a look at the technique of scientific selection, various research conducted has confirmed the importance of scientific assessment of prospective employees. But while fast food outlets would utilise some formal system, it is extremely unlikely that highly complex forms of scientific selection would be used, given the simplified nature of the jobs. This enables the conclusion that this technique is not broadly utilised in those outlets. And the last but certainly not the least is money bonus. With a market capitalization of over $10 billion, Best Buy is the dominant player in this industry. Competition in this industry is high primarily because there is little to no switching costs if a buyer chooses to shop somewhere else. Likewise, products are not set apart: buyers can get comparable products at almost all of the different electronic stores. As a result, companies like Best Buy have to compete on prices and non tangibles, such as customer service and friendliness. The threat of potential new entrants into the consumer electronics retail industry is relatively low. Best Buy has forged a reputation for selling mid to high end product and excellent customer service. It would be difficult for an entrant to challenge the company. Furthermore, it would be difficult to undercut incumbent firms who have already established relationships with suppliers to purchase merchandize at the lowest prices. The substitute products, that may take a portion of the market share away from the consumer electronics retail industry, do not create a huge or direct hazard. Today s society and culture place a big emphasis on technology and it is highly reliant on electronics. The bargaining power of buyers for electronic products is extremely low because the buyers primarily consist of a weak and divided group of individuals, and technology has became a vital need for most people. Of them, the plan to establish self directed and high performance teams is spotlighted. The company needs to establish a team that combines the different talent and work performance of its employees in order to accomplish a particular goal and purpose. Concerns arise when some of the company s managers are experiencing some teams that are self directed and high performing, while others are not. Therefore, discussions are held which aim at familiarizing all employees with what it means to be self directed and high performing. In the process, they brainstorm on ideas like building elements of a successful team. If a manager has not fulfilled the demand of having this type of team, they are focused on as needing more aid in successfully moving forward towards the goal. At the time, those who are struggling are expected to learn from those who are doing well in order for them to identify the mistakes and how to correct them. In team building, through the help of leadership within the company, a team of people collaborate and work together to achieve a common goal. (Midura Glover, 2005) In this case, leaders are managers and they make decisions, clarify goals, build commitment practices and coach their team. Running Loose is a novel that deals with Louie having to face big decisions that is hard for him especially since he is having to face them at such a stressful time in his life. The novel is relevant for today s young readers because in teenagers everyday lives they struggle with facing big decisions all around them whether they know it or not. An example from my personal experience would be one day when I was sitting in the bland walled, loud, dirty cafeteria eating lunch, as any normal teenager seems to do in high school, my friends and I were laughing and cutting jokes at one another. We were having such a wonderful time that we neglected to notice that a student who happened to be one of our peers seemed to be looking down at his food, sad, lonely, and needing comfort. Plato was born around the times of Circa in 428 B.C.E. and because of the lack of many sources from his time period, unfortunately, much of Plato s work in his life has been reconstructed by scholars throughout his writings which were discovered and analyzed by very intelligent historians. • 14. Optical Filters Used For Edge Detection In image processing, a Gabor filter, named after Dennis Gabor, is a linear filter used for edge detection. Frequency and orientation representations of Gabor filters are similar to those of the human visual system, and they have been found to be particularly appropriate for texture representation and discrimination. In the spatial domain, a 2D Gabor filter is a Gaussian kernel function modulated by a sinusoidal plane wave. Simple cells in the visual cortex of mammalian brains can be modeled by Gabor functions.[1][2] Thus, image analysis with Gabor filters is thought to be similar to perception in the human visual system. A set of Gabor filters with different frequencies and orientations may be helpful for extracting useful features from an image.[7] In the discrete domain, two dimensional Gabor filters are given by, G_c[i,j]=B e^{ frac{(i^2+j^2)}{2sigma^2}}cos(2pif(icos heta+jsin heta)) G_s[i,j]=C e^{ frac{(i^2+j^2)}{2sigma^2}}sin(2pif(icos heta+jsin heta)) where B and C are normalizing factors to be determined. 2 D Gabor filters have rich applications in image processing, especially in feature extraction for texture analysis and segmentation.[8] f defines the frequency being looked for in the texture. He knew that the Americans were a tremendous threat to all Indian tribes, and realized that the Indians would be destroyed one by one if not united. Tecumseh created a confederation of thirty two tribes in hopes that the Americans would recognize their borders and thus put a halt to westward expansion. His confederation may have succeeded if it were not for the mistakes made by his brother, Laulewasika, the Americans violent actions towards the Indian tribes, and the unwillingness of the different tribes to cooperate. It broke his heart, but he told her that he could not marry her and they went their separate ways (Patriot 147). Tecumseh s childhood greatly influenced how he acted as an adult. He knew that the Americans had to be stopped but he did not want to fight them. When fighting was the only choice, he had a reputation for his mercy. He despised the torture of prisoners and other cruel actions done by both sides during warfare. He was an honest man, and was trusted by both the Americans and Indians (Dictionary 1125). Tecumseh felt that the Americans were weakening his people by introducing them to liquor and by over hunting the animals in order to attain their furs (Blodgett). They were also a huge threat to the Indians because they were constantly taking more and more land away from single tribes. The Americans would seek out small, weak tribes and offer them money and goods for land which was not even theirs. The tribes all shared the land, and Tecumseh felt that no one chief could sell away the land (Blodgett). Conformity And Rebellion In Popular Culture Analysis Conformity and Rebellion in Popular Culture and Sexuality In the first lecture for this class, Professor Creekmur asked the question; is sex popular (Creekmur Aug. 20)? As he often does in the course, Creekmur doesn t give a simple, clear cut answer, but instead offers a paradox, that while sex is an aggressively private act, it is also a good that is consumed, in our magazines and on our televisions. This paradox ultimately sets the stage for the rest of this class, demonstrating how something as intimate as one s sexuality can come to reinforce popular conventions of normalcy and deviancy within society at large, and what this essay will attempt to address. One of the first ideas that Professor Creekmur introduced to class was the fact ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Specifically, Winkler references groups like the Traditional Values Coalition, which to this day continue to lobby Congress and the National Institute of Health to cut funding to sex research (Winkler). • 26. Analysis Of The Poem Exposure By Wilfred Owen The poetry written in World War I was mostly dark and told of the terrible conditions of the war. The poetry shows how the soldiers suffered and struggled through unimaginable conditions. The conditions of the weather and battle were often brutal and uninhabitable; yet the soldiers endured these conditions. Nature was often a slow and painful killer. War is a constant in an ever changing world. It is easy to see that fighting is an almost futile attempt to conquer and prevail. The poetry from the war can express the pain of war in a beautiful manner. Through writing the authors can share the pain of what they experienced at war. The difficulty of war is viewed differently through the eyes of these two narrators, and while one views nature as the true enemy, the other sees the loss of people back home as the hardship. The point of view a person has is often shaped by their life experiences. The reader can see how war can change a soldier s ideals as they experience it. In the poem Exposure, Wilfred Owen writes about the mental toll war takes on the human mind. He writes about how the soldier is worried by silence, sentries whisper, curious, nervous but nothing happens . This shows the soldier s paranoia during the night. The soldier s cannot rest even though it is quiet, because they are afraid of what they cannot hear. Their paranoia is taking over their minds and making them nervous about what is to come. • 29. Different Aspects That Go Into Making A Business... There are many different aspects that go into making a business successful. Businesses need a strong vision, great leaders within the organization, strong sales, a successful sales team, a steady stream of revenue as well as a way to produce the revenue or sales coming in. Two important aspects of business that are not always brought up, is profit and the cost to operate the organization. Often times managers only look at the net profit or net revenue on their Profit and Loss statements without breaking down the numbers or cost of doing business. Even if an organization is successful and has a great profit margin at the end of the month, quarter or year, does not mean they do not need to analyze the cost of the operations. Analyzing those costs cannot only help an organization become profitable, when they are unprofitable, but can make them more profitable even if they show a healthy profit. Finding ways to cut cost or become more efficient with the operations can lead an organization in the right direction when it comes to their finances (Ahmed, S., 2016). When small businesses are involved they need to pay close attention to their cost and controlling their cost. Profit planning is one way to manage cost and use the budget to create ways for the managers to recognize how to work cheaper and more efficiently. One small miss step with over purchasing or overages on production time or inventory can cost a small business money, when this happens it can directly affect their ... During the 1980s, the opening up by the People s Republic of China s government about war atrocities led a number of victims to seek reparations and apologies from Japan. Compensation cases were brought forward from the 1990s and broke the silence about what had truly happened during the war. • 33. The Conflict in Darfur and United States Involvement The conflict in Darfur refers to the fighting that is happening in the western region of Sudan known as Darfur. These fights have been taking place since 2003 and have continued to today. Similarities can be made to the Rwandan Genocide; there is a government funded and armed militia that is not officially supported by the government that is killing a local population. The citizens of the region of Darfur that are being killed are not Arabic, like the majority of the rest of Sudan is, however, they are more similar in culture and other aspects to the citizens of South Sudan, Sudan s neighboring country to the south with which Sudan has had multiple wars with. Despite the fact that there is a militia that is killing citizens, there are also other militias that are fighting for the Darfuri people. These two sides have been fighting each other for close to ten years. Even though citizens of a certain group are being targeted by a militia, the conflict in Darfur is not a genocide. The United States should not get involved militarily in this conflict because it is only a conflict and not a genocide. It is a war between two groups over disputes between these groups. Instead, the United States should use diplomacy to help end the conflict happening in Darfur. • 41. The Dangers Of Workers Rights During The 19th Century The industrialization period that took place during the 19th century brought forth a great deal of change for workers. Although these changes made for more efficient production, the workers also faced harsh work conditions, which were extremely dangerous as well as believed to be the cause of early deaths for some. These conditions included long work hours without breaks, exposure to pollution and new machinery, and the use of child labor. Fortunately, the critique of these harsh conditions led to improved conditions for workers and new laws protecting the worker rights. During the 19th century as industrialization was taking over many people were looking for work and waiting in long lines to obtain jobs in mills and factories. As a result, mill and factory owners, knowing this, took advantage of the workers that they hired and required them to work long hours for small wages. It was all too common for workers to work 12 hours, or more, daily in hot and uncomfortable environments. In addition to these long hours, the workers would not receive a break for lunch or to rehydrate their bodies. This led to exhaustion for workers and increased the danger of working in these mills and factories.
