The Last Task
Max Phillips
There are several possibilities and options when
considering who and where we could go to distribute
our film. However, because our film is more in the
‘niche’ category, it is highly unlikely that our film would
get rights to be shown in a mass cinema chain such as
ODEON. This is due to the fact that the film is an
amateur production, without any big ‘names’ or
companies being tied or in relation with the film,
making it more unlikely that a general audience would
come to see it.
For this reason, considering smaller venues and more
‘local cinemas’ is a better option. We could also
possibly make it available online for people to watch,
or as a DVD only release.
THE REVENANT
BRIDGE OF SPIES
STAR WARS – THE FORCE AWAKENS
Those 3 films were the top, most popular showings on at the
ODEON in Guildford. When talking about the genres of these films,
none of them match the psychological thriller genre which our
group have gone for in our film. Star Wars fits into the fantasy sci-
fi genre, which mainly attracts children, teenagers and otherwise
fanatics of the film. Bridge Of Spies is classified as a ‘Biographical’
Thriller film. While the thriller theme is still prevalent in this film, it
yet isn’t much similar to how ‘The Last task is depicted. This film
focuses more on History and real-life events. Lastly, The Revenant
is an ‘Adventure Drama’ film. This type of film mainly attracts a
mass audience, as it isn’t anything too specific or ‘niche’ – The film
also advertises itself on being based of ‘true events’, which isn’t
similar to our media production.
These genres are all in 3 different categories but none of which fit
into the psychological thriller genre which our media production is
classified as. As of showings, Star Wars is by far the most popular
film being played there, due to its series and previous popularity
with fans. All genres vary in films being shown at the ODEON. But
being able to screen a film there means having the rights to do so.
Being in links with big production companies and famous actors /
celebrities who will up advertise the film even further.
READING FILM THEATRE >
< BFI
For these independent cinemas, it is more obvious that
the production value and actors / directors involved
with the production along with companies are a lot less
known compared to screenings in the ODEON and
such. This creates more of a niche audience, and allows
people to come and watch films and productions
produced by amateur companies which may not get
much of the spotlight, helping give them popularity
and publicity. Many of the films shown are re-releases
of old films, or new films which aren’t very well known
about. Genres range from Historical to Horror in films
shown in these local cinemas, however I don’t see
many Sci-Fi / Fantasy movies being shown.
This is mainly due to the possibility of production
budget for smaller companies, and the inability to be
able to create VFX like bigger companies can do. For
this reason, many more historical and fiction films are
screened.
SUNDANCE BFI FILM FESTIVAL SCREENINGS
A film festival is much like an extended presentation of films
in one or more cinemas or screening venues. This attracts
many fans to come and watch films from all around the
world and to come and see who won the awards. BFI’s 2015
Film Festival saw ‘Chevalier’ win the award for the best
‘overall’ film of the year. This is a comedy film, and was won
due to its good production values and acting on stage. Other
awards went to mainly documentaries and other comedy
films, none of which fit into the psychological thriller
category which is in our production. Every year is different
however, and if a film is original, captivating and well
produced, it will typically gain attention and be in the likes
of winning an award. The BFI shows a wide varied range of
films, with some popular actors who show up in these films
such as Johnny Depp and Bryan Cranston. It is obvious that
these film festivals are aimed at adults and a specific
audience of people interested in genres such as thriller,
history and comedy. These are the top 3 genres which come
up in the films being shown, showing that this is a festival
for adults who are interested in mature films.
This is a highly unlikely case of it being
screened here. This is due to the fact that our
production is not ‘professional’ or very well
known about. No ties with big production
companies or big name actors, and not much
of a budget towards our film with no well
known directors. This is what ODEON usually
aims for, a general audience who want to watch
films with big names. In this case, ODEON
would not be a place where our film would be
likely to be screened.
This is much more of a possibility compared to
ODEON. Local cinemas offer smaller production
companies a chance to air there films, and in
this case we would much more likely get a
chance to get a deal with a local branch to
screen our film. Local cinemas attract more of
a niche audience, interested in specific genres
and lesser known films. In this case, a local
cinema would probably be possibility and a
definite consideration.
These type of competitions allow younger,
more amateur film producers to come and
show of their films in which they have created,
and get entered into completions to win prizes.
This would be the most likely scenario out of
all the options regarding where to screen and
publicise our film. There are no contract deals
involved, and no specific expectations to meet
regarding budget etc… This option would be a
highly likely one.
After analysing the top options on where to
screen the film, I have come to the conclusion
that entering a Young Film Makers Competition
would be the best and most possible option
out of all. Weighing out all the factors for each
possibility, it is our best chance in screening
our film in a competition such as this, to help
us gain publicity.

Q3

  • 1. The Last Task Max Phillips
  • 2. There are several possibilities and options when considering who and where we could go to distribute our film. However, because our film is more in the ‘niche’ category, it is highly unlikely that our film would get rights to be shown in a mass cinema chain such as ODEON. This is due to the fact that the film is an amateur production, without any big ‘names’ or companies being tied or in relation with the film, making it more unlikely that a general audience would come to see it. For this reason, considering smaller venues and more ‘local cinemas’ is a better option. We could also possibly make it available online for people to watch, or as a DVD only release.
  • 3.
  • 4. THE REVENANT BRIDGE OF SPIES STAR WARS – THE FORCE AWAKENS
  • 5. Those 3 films were the top, most popular showings on at the ODEON in Guildford. When talking about the genres of these films, none of them match the psychological thriller genre which our group have gone for in our film. Star Wars fits into the fantasy sci- fi genre, which mainly attracts children, teenagers and otherwise fanatics of the film. Bridge Of Spies is classified as a ‘Biographical’ Thriller film. While the thriller theme is still prevalent in this film, it yet isn’t much similar to how ‘The Last task is depicted. This film focuses more on History and real-life events. Lastly, The Revenant is an ‘Adventure Drama’ film. This type of film mainly attracts a mass audience, as it isn’t anything too specific or ‘niche’ – The film also advertises itself on being based of ‘true events’, which isn’t similar to our media production. These genres are all in 3 different categories but none of which fit into the psychological thriller genre which our media production is classified as. As of showings, Star Wars is by far the most popular film being played there, due to its series and previous popularity with fans. All genres vary in films being shown at the ODEON. But being able to screen a film there means having the rights to do so. Being in links with big production companies and famous actors / celebrities who will up advertise the film even further.
  • 6.
  • 8. For these independent cinemas, it is more obvious that the production value and actors / directors involved with the production along with companies are a lot less known compared to screenings in the ODEON and such. This creates more of a niche audience, and allows people to come and watch films and productions produced by amateur companies which may not get much of the spotlight, helping give them popularity and publicity. Many of the films shown are re-releases of old films, or new films which aren’t very well known about. Genres range from Historical to Horror in films shown in these local cinemas, however I don’t see many Sci-Fi / Fantasy movies being shown. This is mainly due to the possibility of production budget for smaller companies, and the inability to be able to create VFX like bigger companies can do. For this reason, many more historical and fiction films are screened.
  • 9.
  • 10. SUNDANCE BFI FILM FESTIVAL SCREENINGS
  • 11. A film festival is much like an extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues. This attracts many fans to come and watch films from all around the world and to come and see who won the awards. BFI’s 2015 Film Festival saw ‘Chevalier’ win the award for the best ‘overall’ film of the year. This is a comedy film, and was won due to its good production values and acting on stage. Other awards went to mainly documentaries and other comedy films, none of which fit into the psychological thriller category which is in our production. Every year is different however, and if a film is original, captivating and well produced, it will typically gain attention and be in the likes of winning an award. The BFI shows a wide varied range of films, with some popular actors who show up in these films such as Johnny Depp and Bryan Cranston. It is obvious that these film festivals are aimed at adults and a specific audience of people interested in genres such as thriller, history and comedy. These are the top 3 genres which come up in the films being shown, showing that this is a festival for adults who are interested in mature films.

  • 14. This is a highly unlikely case of it being screened here. This is due to the fact that our production is not ‘professional’ or very well known about. No ties with big production companies or big name actors, and not much of a budget towards our film with no well known directors. This is what ODEON usually aims for, a general audience who want to watch films with big names. In this case, ODEON would not be a place where our film would be likely to be screened.
  • 15. This is much more of a possibility compared to ODEON. Local cinemas offer smaller production companies a chance to air there films, and in this case we would much more likely get a chance to get a deal with a local branch to screen our film. Local cinemas attract more of a niche audience, interested in specific genres and lesser known films. In this case, a local cinema would probably be possibility and a definite consideration.
  • 16. These type of competitions allow younger, more amateur film producers to come and show of their films in which they have created, and get entered into completions to win prizes. This would be the most likely scenario out of all the options regarding where to screen and publicise our film. There are no contract deals involved, and no specific expectations to meet regarding budget etc… This option would be a highly likely one.
  • 17. After analysing the top options on where to screen the film, I have come to the conclusion that entering a Young Film Makers Competition would be the best and most possible option out of all. Weighing out all the factors for each possibility, it is our best chance in screening our film in a competition such as this, to help us gain publicity.
