Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
Media institutions that could distributing our
film
• Our film is a very niche audience film therefore we think it would be more
successful if it was showed in an independent cinema. By showcasing it in
independent cinemas we would be more likely to be successful that showing
it in a dependent cinema.
What's on at the local cinema?
Odeon Kingston
Dorking Halls
Analysing genres
• Action
• Animation
• Comedy
• Documentary
• Horror
• Musical
Showing that our genre is psychological thriller and
this seems to be one of the least popular genres it
would be worthwhile is we did exhibit our film in an
independent cinema.
What does this say about audiences.
• This shows that audience members around Kingston prefer higher budgeted films which
contains CGI etc, films that would make them happy and ones that they are more likely to
relate to. In comparison audience members around Dorking seem to enjoy non action films.
Comparison of the two cinemas
• Dorking halls contains 3 screens and
Odeon Kingston has more than 10
screens. An independent cinema like
Dorking Halls would be more likely to
exhibit our film as it is smaller and they
would be more interested in showcasing a
film of a different genre in order to attract
more people.
Sundance film festival
This year the most popular genre was drama. The most
popular genres showed this year at Sundance festival were
drama, adventure and mystery. This does not fit our genre
od psychological thriller.
BFI London Film festival
The BFI London Festival is a 10 day event, during these
ten days a variety of different films and their genres are
showed, however the film genre that is showcased the
most is usually thriller, with their most popular being
crime. Small and large production companies and
audiences with the interest of mostly thriller would usually
attend this event. This festival would best suit our opening
sequence as our genre is psychological thriller it would give
our film a platform as in this way it would help us to reach
out to a wider audience.
Cannes Film Festival
The most popular films which were showcased in this festival this year were
drama or thriller. Cannes does not have a specific genre which is the most
popular because they always change them every year therefore there is a
variety of genres for people to choose from. This festival would not benefit
niche audience films like ours as there are other film genres which are being
reviewed and showcased which would create a bigger competition for us.
The circle
Wind river
Cinema vs Odeon
• Independent cinemas is the obvious and easy place to release our film as it is
aimed at a niche audience and it is not a film that a mainstream audience
would be interested in.
• Odeon would not be a great place to be showcasing our film as it is a place
where big Hollywood films are shown and we would have a big competition
which us as prosumers would not be able to compete with.
Canners vs BFI
• Between these two festivals, BFI festival would be best for us because they
showcase mostly thriller, as our film is a psychological thriller it would have a
bigger chance of being noticed and standing out in comparison to other
thrillers. We would not have other big budget genres as competition.
BBC vs Film4
• Our film would be shown on Film4 because people enjoy to watch thrillers
during the night and would switch to movie channels if they are looking for
a film to watch.
Forums online
• This is a great way to receive reviews and criticisms from different people
whether an audience that doesn’t particularly enjoy our genre or from thriller
enthusiasts. It is also great because things can be shared which would lead to
our film being watched by more people because of exchange through the
internet.
Young Filmmakers
• This would not be a great competition for us as our film is aimed at 18-25
year old females. We would not find our target audience in this environment
therefore it would not benefit us.
Where our film is likely to end up
• I think our film is likely to end up in an independent cinema if successful
because it is aimed at a niche audience and the genre is not a one that is
popular.
