IPC Media would be the best media institution to distribute my new music magazine. As the UK's leading consumer magazine publisher, IPC Media distributes some of the biggest magazines in the country. They have a large portfolio reaching over 350 million copies annually and a strong cross-platform presence to reach wide audiences. Their experience and connections would ensure my magazine is distributed effectively and allow high-quality publishing. While Bauer Media is also excellent, they own major music magazines that could overshadow my new magazine focusing on underground artists, so IPC Media provides a better opportunity.

Q3
1. Question 3 - Evaluation
‘What kind of media institution
might distribute your media product
and why?’
2. My music magazine
This is my final music magazine; it has an
indie/alternative/acoustic genre (hence the title) which isn’t
really a new music magazine genre as there are quite a few
magazines which come under those 3 genres. However I
believe there is a gap in the market for a magazine such as
mine as it features underground/up and coming artists.
As my magazine is aimed at young people ages between 16-
19, I see my magazine being distributed in stores such as
WHSMITH, a few off licenses/ newsstands and small local
music shops. Also purchasing music magazines online is
becoming very popular through official websites hence the
subscription towards my monthly music magazine or even
re-purchasing copies through Amazon/ EBay.
3. A New generation
As my target audience is based around young teenagers, a good way of
interacting with them is through new and developed technologies. This includes
Email, iPhone/ android apps, iTunes, kindle, iBooks and of course the official
website. It’s not only a good way to expand the readership but to also let people
know what’s coming up in next months issue, where it can be purchased (locally
to you) and most importantly its easily accessible.
A monthly music magazine is a good option as it allows the editors to get all of
the necessary information, photographs, news etc rather than rushing it each
week as well as it makes the audience look forward to what’s coming up in the
next issue. This also means that the magazine will be thicker and filled with more
exciting new stuff which occurred within the previous month.
4. Which media institution?
After researching many different companies such as IMATS, BAUER MEDIA, IPC
and a few London based companies, I came to the conclusion that my music
magazine would be best represented by ‘IPC MEDIA’.
Why IPC MEDIA ?
Not only are they UK's leading consumer magazine and digital publisher but
they also distribute some of the UK’s biggest magazines such as
Instyle, NME, The photographer and many more. This also shows that they
would have many connections and would be able to ensure my magazine is
distributed by the best company and allow high quality publishing. IPC Media
have a large portfolio which is known to sell over 350 million copies each year
however they also contain a large cross platform which allows them to reach
out to a wider audience whilst already being widely recognized.
5. So why not Bauer Media?
Although Bauer Media are an excellent company who own some of the
best selling music magazines such as Q, MOJO and Kerrang, they don’t
necessarily fit the criteria that I was looking for. They are a very well
known media institution but I don’t see my magazine doing as well
against some of the magazine companies owned by Bauer Media and it
would be a lot of pressure. My magazine also features and will feature up
and coming (some even unknown) artists therefore I think IPC will give a
better chance to these rather than Bauer.
