Q3
WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION MIGHT
DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
SITUATION
 Finding the best distribution market is fundamental to any media product,
as the kind of distribution method used will allow the amount of access
one has to their demographics.
 Firstly I will use the common way, famously used by most media
institution which is printing of hard copier of their magazine and
displaying them at various popular retail shops and supermarket I.e.
HMV, WHSmith and other newsagents. In this day and age upmarket
superstores such as Asda, Sainsbury and Morrison are becoming the
main seller of magazines which are usually place near the tills and check
up point in order to attack more costumers. With this knowledge it is very
essential that I distribute my magazine to supermarkets to ensure fairly
high purchase rate from consumers. Yet, on the other hand with today’s
technology society, people are constantly connected to the internet and
want constant access to information and products anytime and
anywhere, on the go and in the know so to appeal to this trending
technological culture, I will produce digital copies of my magazine, from
apps to social media sites allowing my demographics to stay constantly
updated with my media product allowing me to keep up with the
competition.
 That is why I will look into different distributors and find which have the
best multi platform base to offer my magazine in ensuring its is
distributed the best way
 Bauer media is a division of the Bauer media group the group is one of
Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group. It is a worldwide
media empire distributing over 300 magazines in 15 countries as well
as having an online presence plus TV and radio stations it is a
multimedia platform uk based group collected around two main
division (magazine/radio) and has been called and rewarded as the
industry innovators.
 Bauer media has the leading music market and entertainment
magazine titles within its portfolio distributing magazines like
Q, MOJO, KERRANG these 3 magazines all target different audiences
kerrang is a rock based magazine, Mojo focuses itself around timeless
music and Q is current music and lifestyles. Bauer also distributes one
of the most successful movie magazines being empire which
continues to break records
 Kerrang is one of the world’s biggest weekly selling magazine and
targets young individual minded passionate consumers (described by
kerrang) it is a rock genres with current news, reviews, gig guides
posters and interviews that is released weekly. Q is one of the UKS
biggest selling monthly magazines it is a magazine that host cross
platform bands/performers and doesn’t stick to one genre Q audience
is made up of 75% male and 25% female.
 Bauer would be a good choice for a publisher for my magazine as they
have published very successful magazines their potfolio is made up of
over 80 influential brands names covering a diverse range of concepts
and topics they know how to target the audience of choice and how to
produce a magazine that is why I think they would be a good choice
for my magazine as they could also offer me a extremely wide
audience.
 I think IPC Media could be a publisher that could distribute/publish
my magazine as they’re the UK’s leading consumer magazine and
digital publisher, they publish a wide range of extremely
successful magazines ’nuts, pick me up, now, chat’ that cover
different genre
 it shows how wide spread IPC are it is a well know publishing
house with over 26 million readers. ‘NME’ which is a music
magazine that is extremely successful and well known and they
also bring out the latest music that has just come out therefore I
think this would be a good publisher as they have published many
magazines and could bring a stronger wider audience to my
magazine and have history with publishing music magazines.
 I think IPC media would be the right publisher for my magazine.
They’d be used to producing the magazine to suit my target market
and could also bring a wider range of audience to my magazine as
it would bring audience similar to ‘NME’ target market
as I’m looking for early ages such as teens to 30+. As their used to
producing mainstream, large circulation magazines it’ll be easy for
them to publish my magazine
CONCLUSION
 Out of the two distributors that I looked into both of
which are extremely successful in different ways, I
think they would both be good candidates for my
magazines distributor but I feel that one is better suited
than other. I believe Bauer would suit my magazine the
most and be the most helpful towards my magazine due
to its multi media approach!
 There are some magazine institutions that would not
suit my magazine such as ‘emap’ who distribute
magazines on house hold furniture jewellery businesses
and many other topical magazines but not any overly
successful music magazines this would be a bad choice
for my magazine as it wouldn’t have the audience or as
much knowledge as the other institutions when it comes
to music magazines.
