Definition of terms is usually an annex to a work (book, research paper, pamphlet, etc.) either at the beginning or more likely near the end with a list of acronyms, jargon, credits, etc. This is an important part of Research paper or report is that in which the key or important terms in the study are clearly defined.
Types and Functions
CONCEPTUAL
-Is the universal meaning that is attributed to a word or group of words and which is understood by many people.
CONCEPTUAL
It is abstract and most general in nature. The usual source of conceptual definition is the DICTIONARY which is the reference book of everyday language.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION
-Is the meaning of the concept or term as used in a particular study. Unlike the conceptual definition, it is stated in concrete term in that it allows measurement.
The usual practice when using both types of definition is to state first the conceptual followed by the operational.
FUNCTIONS
FUNCTIONS
It establishes the rules and procedures the investigators will use to measure variables
It provides unambiguous meaning to terms that otherwise can be interpreted in different ways.

Social safety nets in Bangladesh have been quite effective in smoothing the consumption and the income of poor households and helping them cope with stresses and shocks. These programs, however, cover only a fraction of the poor, and they must be strengthened if they are to adequately address poverty or mitigate the vulnerability to poverty in a sustainable way. Safety nets will become even more important in Bangladesh as the country faces economic downturn, food price fluctuations, climate change, and other developments that increase the vulnerability of the poor.
“Bangladesh’s experience with safety nets”, presented by Akhter Ahmed, IFPRI/Dhaka at the ReSAKSS-Asia Conference, Nov 14-16, 2011, in Kathmandu, Nepal.
The paper holds that such applied theory as the Theory of Consciousness can be constructed only within the limits of a special meta-theory (or general theory) which takes into account the agency of informational factor and has all the necessary tools of study (such as method of study, system of models, system of proofs, conservation laws, etc.) which correspond to the nature of the object of study. The currently dominant meta-theory called the Modern Materialistic (Physical) Picture of the World is not appropriate for constructing the required applied theory of consciousness and many other applied theories within its limits.

Synthesizing an Excellent Literature Review - PhdassistancePhD Assistance
A literature review surveys the books, scholarly papers, and any other sources related to a specific issue, field of study, or theory, and provides a description, summary, and critical evaluation of these works in connection to the research subject under consideration. Literature reviews are aimed to offer readers an overview of the sources you used when researching a certain issue and to show them how your research fits into a larger field of study.

Review of literature is one of the most important steps in the research process. It is an account of what is already known about a particular phenomenon.
Literature review is a laborious task, but it is essential if the research process is to be successful.
Review of literature is one of the most important steps in the research process.
Literature review helps the researcher to get used to the related material on the study
Gives an overview of the field of inquiry on what has been already said about the topic.
Literature reviews also provide a solid background for a research paper’s investigation.
It also provide the knowledge about the problems faced by the previous researchers’ while studying same topic
Researchers almost never conduct a study in an intellectual vacuum: their studies are undertaken within the context of an already existing knowledge base.

LITERATURE AND STUDIES
By: JENNYL P. SALGADOS
MS GENSCIEducation
2. It provides insight into the theoretical/
conceptual background of the study.
It provides the rationale of the framework
of the study. ( the theoretical framework is
obtained or conceived through the
literature search )
It helps the researcher to gather valuable
data and ideas that can guide him in his
own research.
3. It prepares the reader to better assimilate
and understand the concepts of the study
and gives him a bird’s eye view of the
quality of readings the researcher has
done in support of his study.
It creates a rapport with your audience.
It helps the researcher avoid Incidental
Plagiarism
It sharpens the researcher’s Research
Focus
4. REVIEWING THE RELATED LITERATURE REQUIRES THE
RESEARCHER TO MAKE IN- DEPTH READINGS OF BOTH
THE RESEARCH AND CONCEPTUAL LITERATURE.
Research literature pertains to published or
unpublished reports of actual research
studies done previously and usually
referred to “ studies “. (e.g. theses and
dissertations)
Conceptual literature refers to articles or
books written by authorities giving their
opinions, experiences theories and ideas
about a topic. ( in most research studies, it
is referred to as “ literature “)
5. RELATED STUDIES ARE CLASSIFIED:
Local--- if printed in the Philippines and
Foreign—if printed outside the country
Related literature maybe:
• Local--- if the study was done in the
Philippines ,and
• Foreign—if the study was done outside
the country
6. VARIOUS FORMS OF LITERATURE REVIEW
Argumentative review—is to present an
opposing view to a given position.
Integrative review—is composed of
examinations and critical analysis on a
given topic to introduce a need for a
new research
Historical review—will assess all the
historical records of scholarships
chronologically
7. A LITERATURE REVIEW IN ANY FIELD IS ESSENTIAL AS
IT OFFERS A COMPREHENSIVE OVERVIEW AND
RECAPITULATION ON THE GIVEN SCHOLARSHIP FROM
PAST TO PRESENT, GIVING A READER A SENSE OF
FOCUS AS TO WHICH DIRECTION YOUR NEW
RESEARCH IS HEADED.
Methodological review—examines the
research methods alone( e.g.collection of
data, their critical analysis, interpretation
and research results)
8. PARTS OF THE MANUSCRIPT THAT THE RESEARCHER CAN
FIND USEFUL FOR MAKING REVIEW
Abstract. Copy exactly as written in the
manuscript article
Rationale or Background of the Study.
Note the researcher’s motivation and
justifications for conducting the study.
9. Statement of the Problem or Research
Objectives. List them exactly as stated in
the manuscript or article.
Hypothesis. List them exactly as stated in
the manuscript or article.
10. Research methodology. List the research
design( experiment, survey, case study),
research environment or locale of the
study, the respondents, sampling
procedures, data gathering procedures,
research instruments ( questionnaire,
interview schedule ) and statistical
treatment data. Note any unusual
procedures or techniques employed by the
researcher.
11. Findings. List the major findings of the
study and indicate whether the
objectives of the study were attained
or whether the hypothesis were
supported.
