Protists are eukaryotic organisms that are more closely related to animals, plants and fungi than bacteria. They can be unicellular or multicellular without specialized tissues. Protists have a variety of means of locomotion including cilia, flagella and pseudopodia. They are found in aquatic ecosystems worldwide and some are pathogens of plants and animals. Protists exhibit both sexual and asexual reproduction and have been present on Earth since the Precambrian era.
