History of Lise Meitner
Olivia Mura, Haley Donovan, Robert
Gahn
Bio of Ms. Meinter
● November 7th 1878- October 27
1968
● From 1901-1905 she went to the
University of Vienna and
became the second woman to
get a doctoral degree
Biography cont.
● She got the Lieben prize
in 1925, the Max Planck
medal in 1949, the Otto
Hahn Prize for Chemistry
and Physics in 1955, and
the Enrico Fermi Award
in 1966
Biography cont.
● In 1938 Lise, Otto Hahn, and Fritz
Strassmann were the first to
recognize that when an uranium
atom is bombarded by neutrons, it
splits, they called it Nuclear Fission
● She was born in Vienna, Austria and
died in Cambridge, United Kingdom
Meitner’s atom
When neutrons and the
atom collide the atom
splits, releasing additional
neutrons from the
nucleus.
Meitner’s atom cont.
● If enough atoms split at
once, it is likely to produce an
explosion.
● This is the method
that Lise Meitner used on Uranium which is
called Nuclear fission
Destruction
Sadly, Lise’s discovery
was not used for
good. In 1945 the
Uranium bomb was
dropped on
Hiroshima, which
ended the war.
Model of the atoms
Meitner’s atom Chadwick’s
atom
Similarities
● In both models, the neutron
is the main particle
● Both models include all of
the main 3 parts of an atom
Differences
● Chadwick discovered another part
to an atom, where Meitner
discovered a reaction when the
particles are pushed a certain way.
● chadwick’s discovery was used for
good and Meitner’s was used for
destruction
