2. Background
Born August 30th, 1871- Died October 19th, 1937
Studied at:
★ University of Cambridge
★ McGill University
★ University of Manchester
3. Notable Awards
Rumford Medal (1904) Matteucci Medal (1913)
Nobel Prize in Chemistry
(1908)
Copley Medal (1922)
Barnard Medal (1910) Franklin Medal (1924)
Elliott Cresson Medal (1910) Albert Medal (1928)
Faraday Medal (1930)
4. Major Scientific Findings
Through an experiment using gold foil Rutherford
formulated the Rutherford model of the atom in
1911, that a very small charged nucleus containing
much of the atom’s mass was orbited by low-mass
electrons.
5. Interesting Facts
•He was denied permission to teach each time
he applied for a job.
•The element 'rutherfordium' was named in his
honor
6. Time Period
1889- Mar 4th - Benjamin Harrison inaugurated as 23rd
president
1872- The Butter and Cheese Exchange opened in NYC. It later
became known as the New York Mercantile Exchange
7. How the Atomic Model Was
Changed
J.J. Thomson’s model:
➢ No Nucleus
➢ Straight lines
Rutherford’s model
➢ Nucleus has been added
➢ Some lines are bent to show reflecting electrons
8. Similarities
How Models are the Same:
❏ Show same number of electrons
❏ Shows which direction electrons are being reflected
