Objectives
At the end of this module you will be able to-
• recall the concept of electricity
• define the term electromagnetic force
• know about the nature of charge on electron
and proton
Let’s start module
ELECTRICITY
The ward electricity refers to the natural phenomenon known only by
its effects like electric current, electric field and electromagnetism .
Electricity or electric phenomena are caused by electric charges . charge
is the fundamental property of material particles because of which they
exert electric force on one another. Nature of charge on electron is
negative and charge on proton is positive. Magnitude of charge of
electron is -1.6/10(-19)c and charge of photon is +1.6/10(-19)c. S.I unit
of charge which is called “coulomb”. similar charges repel each other
and unlike charges attract each other. The material which loses electrons
become positively charged(due to the presence of excess proton) and the
material which gains electrons become negatively charged. Both the
material will get equal amount of charges. Like charge repel and unlike
charge attract each other and these force are called electrostatic forces.
