         Electric Charge and Static
                  Electricity
Electric Charge
• Def-A property that causes subatomic
particles such as protons and electrons to
  attract or repel each other.
• Electric charges move in a flash through a
  lightning bolt.
Electric Charges
• Def-A net electric charge is produce by an
excess or shortage of electrons .
• ( C) Coulombs is the unit of electric charges

-Quik Math
• Takes 6.24X1018 to produce a coulomb
Electric Forces
 • Def-The force of attraction or repulsion
   between electrically charged objects.
 • Charges repel, and opposite charges attract.
Electric Fields
• Def-The effect an electric charge has on other
charges in the space around it.
• The strength of an electric field depends o
the amount of charge that produces the field
and on the distance from the charge.
Static Electricity and Charging
• Def-The study of the behavior of electric
charges, including how charge is transferred
  between objects.
• Charge can be transferred by friction, by
  contact, and by induction.
• Law of conservation charge- The total charge
in an isolated system is constant.
Charging by friction
• Ex) Balloon pick up a net charge by rubbing a
  it on your hair
• Electrons move from hair to balloon because
atoms in rubber have grater attraction for
electrons than atoms in hair. Because your
  hair loses electrons
Charging by contact
• A Van de Graaff generator has charge the
metal sphere. By touching it transfer the
charge that make the hair repel each other
  because like charges repel
• She acquires a charge large enough to make
  her hair stand.
Charing by intruduction
• Def- Transfer of charge with out contact between
  materials.
• If you come with a negative charge t the
doorknob it induces charges to move within the
  metal doorknob.
Static Discharge
• Occurs when a pathway through which
  charges can move forms suddenly
• It will not travel through air but it becomes
charge when the gap between the objects is
  small.
• Ex) Lighting storm the air is charge from
  clouds to earth.
