Meaning of percent
• During yours exams , you are always busy
comparing your marks with other children’s
marks or you are even interested to in which
subject your performance is better.
• Suppose , Rajesh got 18 marks out of 25 and
Gopal got 14 out of 20 in Maths, who did better?
• We express the marks as fraction of 1.
• Thus , we get
18
25
marks of Rajesh and
14
20
of Gopal.
• We can , now compare
18
25
and
14
20
18
25
>
14
20
since 18×20>14×25
We thus, find that Rajesh’s performance is better. 3
Lets answer some questions

 A percent is a ratio whose second term is 100.
The word percent is derived from latin word ‘per

symbol ‘ %’ for percent. Thus,
 72 percent= 72% =
72
100
. Percent means parts per
hundred.
 To change Decimal into percents
 Example- (i) 0.125 = (0.125 × 100) = 12.5%
