1. EVALUATION QUESTION 6
What have you learned about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
2. CAMERA
I used a Nikon Coolpix L310 to capture all the images used in the production
of my media product. Using the camera was a key part of the production
work as I needed images for the magazine pages.
For the contents page and the
double page spread I used the
same camera. For both sets of
images taken on these pages
however I also needed to use the
flash. The flash enabled me to get a
clear image even though the room
wasn’t practical. This meant I still got
a light image and the background
did not effect the quality.
Double Page Spread:
For the double page spread I
needed a range of images to
clearly show the main feature, the
band. The main images are made
up of several different images put
together, but all taken by the same
camera. The focus on the camera
was kept as a close up with the
flash on so they are clear and the
brightness is natural (not dark).
Cover Page:
For the cover page I needed a medium
close up shot, so I used a setting on the
camera which would capture a clear
but slightly close up image. The close up
setting on this camera is represented by
a small flower on the camera options.
This enabled me to capture an image
where the subject (person) was the main
focus and therefore clear. This setting
focuses on the foreground and blurs the
background, making the subject clearer.
3. PHOTOSHOP - MAIN TOOLBAR
These are the tools I used from
the main task (shown to the
right) to create my media
products cover page (shown
to the left). These names and
symbols of the tools I used:
Move Tool
Magic Wand
Crop Tool
Pipette Tool
Pen Tool
Text Tool
Shape Tool
Colour Change Tool
4. PHOTOSHOP- MAIN TOOLBAR
The pen tool was used to separate the main subject of my images
from the background, so only the main feature (body) was present.
This later enabled me to layer up the images to create better
effects and a more unique look. I used this to allow my magazines to
follow the codes and conventions, such as having the cover star
overlap the mast head. I enabled this by cutting out the image with
the pen tool and then overlapping it. The pen tool can be used
accurately to cut around the subject so there are no funny lines or
weird cut outs, you do this by zooming into the image with control
and plus (Ctrl +). The two images to the left show the before and
after effect of the pen tool, once I cut around the image I then
removed the background to make it white.
The magic wand tool is used after the pen tool. When the
image or person has been cut out you are left with a white
background. By selecting the magic wand tool and selecting
the white area, the magic wand tool detects that this area is
not wanted and removes it so you are left with a transparent
background. The transparent background can then overlap
other layers and only the subject will show (the part of the
image not cut out or removed with the magic wand). The
three images shown to the right shows an example of the
process. The first two are also shown above as this is the pen
tool. Once I created the white background I then selected it
all with the magic wand tool and clicked Delete > Ctrl D to
remove the background and de select the selected area.
5. PHOTOSHOP- MAIN TOOLBAR
The crop tool allows you to select just one square part of the image that you want to use and
removes the rest. You use this by selecting the area, then choosing if you want to keep the
inside or outside of what you selected, then the other section is removed. This is the same
method as the pen tool with the exception that it removes everything, even other layers. This
came in useful when selecting images that needed to be cut down but kept in the same
shape, e.g a square.
I learnt how to use the text tool which then allowed me to insert text
where needed, adjust the colour, size, font and style to suit my media
product. Once the text has been created you can also later adjust it
by double clicking on it. The fonts are easy to change as the option
bar is at the top of the screen. The text tool was vital to learn as text
was a key point in making the media product. The bar above the
image (to the right) shows the basic text options such as font and size.
The rest is down to typing the word and scaling it to fit the media
product with the correct for and colour.
The shape tool was used to create mainly the puffs and the
backgrounds for my cover page. The tool allowed me to create a
solid shaped background underneath features such as text and the
barcode so that they remained clear. I created the shapes by clicking
the too > selecting the circle (for the puffs) > click (whilst holding shift)
to create the shape > then unclicking to de select the shape. After
the shape has been created I can then move if it is not in the position I
want it to be, change the colour/ size and add effects. This tool
proved useful as the shapes are used as backgrounds for a lot of
features in the media products designs.
6. PHOTOSHOP- MAIN TOOLBAR
The move tool allows you to move anything around on the Photoshop document. This is useful
when looking at the positioning of the features so you can adjust their positioning and
rearrange if needed. The move tool can be used for anything; text, images, shapes,
backgrounds. I mainly used the move tool to reposition features. You use the move tool by
simply selecting the tool and then the item you wish to move and simply move it. This tool was
used in every aspect of my final media product.
The colour change tool was used to change many aspects of
my final media product. The colour change tool allows you to
change the colour of a shape, text or background. The
colour bar is located in the top right of the screen and is
always accessible. You use this tool by selecting the item that
you wish to change the colour of > selecting the new colour
in the colour bar in the right hand corner > then ‘OK’ it. This
tool proved useful when creating the house style for the
media product by creating a new colour scheme. The tool is
easy to use and has been used for a main part in creating the
media product.
The pipet tool is used when adjusting colours in the Photoshop document. I used this
when creating accuracy in my colour scheme for my media product. The pipet tool
is used by using the colour change tool, once this is open you then click anywhere
on the document and it takes the exact colour from where you click so that you can
re use it. This proved useful when selecting certain shades to use for my media
product, so that it was all kept the same. The pipet tool was also useful when
adjusting other colours to match ones already present on the designs. The pipet tool
was in constant use when creating my design work as it is important to have all the
pages and features kept to the same theme, the tool allowed me to do this in terms
of colour.
7. PHOTOSHOP
This shows how it
changed my
image using black
and white.
Using the image adjustments was easy to pic up as the options are
clearly laid out. Once you have selected the image you then look at
the options to correct it or adjust it colours and contrast. I used this
mostly for my double page spread as these photos were made black
and white using the image adjustments. I created this effect by going
onto Image > Adjustments > Black & White, and then I adjusted the
black and white settings so I had an even balance, it wasn’t too dark
or light so you can still see all the features. Another main adjustment I
used was the Brightness/ Contrast tool. By changing the brightness
you can see more or less detail of the image, if it was a dark image
then by changing the brightness it can be made lighter revealing
more detail and making it more of a natural image. And if the image
was light it works vice versa. The contrast was used to make the
image look sharper so that either less or more features would show.
The blending options were used to add effects to the
images and text on the media product. I mainly used
the outer glow tool to add the glowing effect to my
main images on the cover page and the double page
spread. I created this effect by right clicking on the
picture I want to change > Blending options > Outer
Glow. I then adjusted the outer glow settings to the
colour, thickness, transparency and effects that I
wanted, for example my cover star has a white outer
glow which fades to transparent. I used this effect
several times throughout my media product so there is
a layer between the image and the background,
creating more depth.
This shows
the
glowing
border
around my
image.
8. QUARK - MAIN TASKBAR
Quark was used to create the double page
spread and contents page, although the images
were all edited on Photoshop. Quark is an
alternative software to Photoshop that is more
text focused then image. Quark was easy to use
and quick to learn, it allowed me to have a
professional finish on the magazine pages.
These are the tools I used from the main task to
create my media products contents page and
double page spread (shown to the left). These
names and symbols of the tools I used:
-
Move Tool
-
Text Tool
-
Picture Tool
-
Shape Tool
-
Zoom Tool
9. QUARK - MAIN TASKBAR
The move tool allowed me to move features around on the media products designs
once they are placed one the document. You simply do this by selecting the move tool
before the item and then drag it to any point on the page. The move tool proved useful
when re arranging the layout of both the double page spread and the contents page.
The move tool is the most used tool on the task bar because of its practicality, its easy to
use and very useful.
The text tool allowed to me insert text anywhere on the design. I Used this when creating
the interview on the double page spread and all the other text on the contents page,
for example the page titles and numbers. After selecting the text tool, you then select
and drag where you want it on the page and type the text that you need. You can then
further change the text by changing the could and font ect. The text tool is easy to use
and made up most of the contents and double page spread pages.
The picture tool was used to insert the images onto the media products designs such as
the backgrounds and extra images. The picture tool was used by selecting the tool >
clicking on the design > dragging the box to how big you needed it to be > then while
the tool was still selected double clicking on the box to select an image out of a file. The
image tool was easy to use and was needed in creating the media products as it visually
had to look good.
The shape tool was used to draw shapes for the backgrounds and the puffs on the
media products designs. I used the shape tool by selecting it from the main taskbar >
selecting the shape that I needed > clicking on the design whilst holding shift (to keep
the shape in proportion) > dragging it out to get the shape I needed.
The zoom tool was used to zoom in and out of my media product designs so I could get
things in line and add in small details to the designs. The zoom tool is also on the main
task bar and was very useful when creating my media product.
