Scarlet Letter Individuality
In The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the story of a flawed woman is told in such an
explicitly detailed way that it manages to exemplify the individuality of the tale. As author Thomas
Hardy states, A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more
unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman. The seven years of
Hester Prynne s life that The Scarlet Letter reminisces about is such a strange and exquisite story that
uses both the irregularity of such events, and the period of time in which it takes place, to keep the
reader intrigued. The rarity of this story that Hawthorne seamlessly stumbled upon during his time in
the custom house and the talent of the aforementioned author in his writing skills, leads to a timeless
tale worthy of the papers it is placed upon. In the period of time in which the story takes place,
scandals between people and their relationships were extremely rare and almost unheard of. If you
skip forward a couple hundred years, cheating and other things that were once unimaginable now
happen all the time. The reaction of citizens in her town shows the outrage that occurred towards such
an uncommon event, with one lady saying, This woman brought shame upon us all, and ought to die.
Is there no law for it? (Hawthorne, 49). The statement demonstrates just how confused and unprepared
the townspeople were for such an event, planning forms of punishment

The consumption of organic food has grown rapidly over the past two decades. Global sales for
organic food increased from $23 billion in 2002 to 63 billion in 2011, accounting for 1 2% of total
