 The Past Perfect expresses the idea that something occurred 
before another action in the past. It can also show that 
something happened before a specific time in the past. 
 As an easy explaination, this tense talks about the "past in the 
past". 
 The above diagram clearly shows that, the blue dot, is the 
actual event that is being describe using Past Perfect Tense.
Duration before something in the

 We use the Past Perfect to show that something started in the past and continued up 
until another action in the past. 
Examples: 
 We had had that car for ten years before it broke down. 
 By the time Alex finished his studies, he had been in London for over eight years. 
 They felt bad about selling the house because they had owned it for more than forty 
years.

How do we use the Past Perfect 
Continuous Tense? 
The past perfect continuous tense is like the past perfect tense, but it 
expresses longer actions in the past before another action in 
the past. For example: 
•Ram started waiting at 9am. I arrived at 11am. When I arrived, 
Ram had been waiting for two hours. 
Ram had been waiting for two hours when I arrived.
