 Learners cannot communicate well without a
working vocabulary of 2,000 words or more.
Vocabulary is extremely important at the
beginning and intermediate levels.
What teachers can do:What teachers can do:
 Teach students vocabulary strategies.
 Help students to set priorities about
vocabulary learning.
Vocabulary StrategiesVocabulary Strategies
 Keep a vocabulary notebook or make a
carpet/folder only with new vocabulary that is
pertinent and significant to your study
program.
Group words by categories.
List where you first heard the word
and in what context (localize).
Learn song lyrics, imitate; Name that tune!
Rehearse new words (practice).
Mimic native speakers, pronunciation of new
words.
Walk around while imitating new words.
Use semantic mapping (webbing or netting).
Place the major, most important concept in
a circle in the middle of the page, then use
lines leading to all the vocabulary words
related or in reference to the major
concept.
 Use Total Physical Response to learn verbs,
adverbs and nouns.
 Label item with the appropriate words using
sticky notes or index cards and tape, you can
also highlight.
 Use a picture dictionary.
Build models or make maps (of the subject)
and label the parts.
Example:Example: Human Anatomy label major organs.
Think of associations of new words. What
do you associate with the “X” word? You
can make funny, graphic, colorful lists!

 Practice new vocabulary with friends.
 Put new words into sentences and use them as
soon as you can.

  • 2. Biggest problems for beginners:Biggest problems for beginners: Vocabulary LearningVocabulary Learning  Learners cannot communicate well without a working vocabulary of 2,000 words or more. Vocabulary is extremely important at the beginning and intermediate levels.
  • 3. What teachers can do:What teachers can do:  Teach students vocabulary strategies.  Help students to set priorities about vocabulary learning.
  • 4. Vocabulary StrategiesVocabulary Strategies  Keep a vocabulary notebook or make a carpet/folder only with new vocabulary that is pertinent and significant to your study program.
  • 5. Group words by categories. List where you first heard the word and in what context (localize).
  • 6. Learn song lyrics, imitate; Name that tune! Rehearse new words (practice). Mimic native speakers, pronunciation of new words. Walk around while imitating new words.
  • 7. Use semantic mapping (webbing or netting). Place the major, most important concept in a circle in the middle of the page, then use lines leading to all the vocabulary words related or in reference to the major concept.
  • 8.  Use Total Physical Response to learn verbs, adverbs and nouns.  Label item with the appropriate words using sticky notes or index cards and tape, you can also highlight.  Use a picture dictionary.
  • 9. Build models or make maps (of the subject) and label the parts. Example:Example: Human Anatomy label major organs. Think of associations of new words. What do you associate with the “X” word? You can make funny, graphic, colorful lists!
