Oh no! Look at all that snow! What am I going to do?
Johanna, what are you talking about?
I hate driving in the winter. It seems so dangerous!
It can be, but if you prepare for it you can really reduce the danger.
Really?
For sure. I have been attending a seminar at work about driving safely in the
winter. It has been a big help.
Sure, there are a lot of things we can do to prevent accidents. The first thing is
that we should simple stay off the roads if the road conditions are very bad.
What have you learned so far? Do you have any tips for me?
That’s a good idea. I just read an article saying that in the event of a blizzard we
should simply stay off the road until the snow plows were able to clean things up.
Exactly, bad road conditions can be a real hazard.

I guess driving in bad conditions can really affect traction on the road.
That’s for sure. Black ice can be a huge problem.
Black ice? What’s that?
Black ice is ice on the road that’s not visible. The ground may look dry even when
it’s covered in ice.
That could be very bad.
Yes, so caution is always necessary. Another problem in the winter is low lying fog
which can be very dangerous as well.
So the seminar covers all these points?
Yes, it does. There is still time to sign up. Why don’t you attend with me? I’m
sure you will learn a lot.
When is the next class?
Tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. I’ll pick you up at 6:45!
Let’s learn what we can do to drive safely
in the winter!

Case studies
Activity 5
Case Study 1
Simbaljeet checked the weather forecast in the
morning, and all seemed ok. She left her home 4
hours later only to get stuck in the middle of a serious
accident.
What could she have done differently?
Case Study 2
Bob went for a drive and accidentally drove into
the back of another driver. He said it wasn’t his
fault because the road was so slippery.
What do you say?
Case Study 3
Shamsun checked the weather forecast. It was so
bad she decided to stay home.
What safe driving principle is she following?
Case Study 4
Rob got stuck in the snow. He got out ok, but
nearly froze his hand clearing the snow.
What mistake did he make?
Case Study 5
Where did he go wrong?
Joe was turning into a parking lot but wasn’t able
to make the turn. He drove over the curb and
then into another car.
Dictation
Activity 6
Dictation 1
Before leaving on a road trip be sure to check the
weather and road conditions.
Dictation 2
If you must drive in less than perfect conditions be sure
to let your family know where you are going.
Dictation 3
Keeping an emergency kit in the trunk of your car really
could save your life. Update it from time to time to be
sure you have the equipment you need in an emergency.
Dictation 4
On the highway, be sure to keep a safe distance between
you and the driver in front of you. Keep 8-10 seconds of
the nearest car in front of you.
Dictation 5
Before the onset of the winter driving season be sure to
have your car checked over by a professional. Among
other things, you should get a basic tune up and oil
change.
