Precipitation is one of the steps in the water cycle. The main forms of precipitation are rain, snow, sleet, and hail. Rain forms when water condenses and falls from clouds as drops over 0.5mm in diameter. Snow forms when water vapor becomes ice crystals in cold clouds and stays frozen as it falls. Sleet forms when rain falls through a layer above freezing and then a freezing layer near the ground, causing the rain to freeze into small ice particles before hitting the ground.
