The document discusses various types of precipitation including rain, snowfall, sleet, hail, and freezing rain. It describes how precipitation forms through the condensation and coalescence of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere. The key forms of rainfall are identified as convective, orographic, and frontal rainfall. Convective rainfall occurs when the sun heats the earth's surface and warms the air. Orographic rainfall is caused when moist air rises over mountain ranges. Frontal rainfall results from warm and cool air masses meeting along weather fronts. Drizzle, snowfall, sleet, hail, and freezing rain are also summarized.

2. PRECIPITATION
Precipitation is any product of the condensation of atmospheric water
vapour that falls under gravity.
Formation: Precipitation is formed in the atmosphere by
condensation & coalescence of water droplets or ice crystals.
Forms:
I. Rain
II. Snowfall
III. Drizzle
IV. Sleet
V. Hail
VI. Freeing rain
3. RAINFALL
• Rain is when liquid droplets fall to the surface of
the Earth. INTENSITY :
•Light- 2.5mm/hr
•Moderate- 2.8-7.6mm/hr
•Heavy >7.6 mm/hr
4. CONVECTIONAL RAINFALL :
It results from the heating of the earth’s
surface that causes air to rise rapidly. As the air
rises . It cools and moisture condenses into cloud
and precipitation.
FORMS OF RAINFALL
5. OROGRAPHIC RAINFALL:
when moist air is lifted as it moves over a mountain range. As the air rises
and cools, orographic clouds form and serve as the source of the
precipitation, most of which falls upwind of the mountain ridge. Some also
falls a short distance downwind of the ridge and is sometimes
called spillover. On the lee side of the mountain range, rainfall is usually
low, and the area is said to be in a rain shadow. Very heavy precipitation
typically occurs upwind of a prominent mountain range that is oriented
across a prevailing wind from a warm ocean.
6. FRONTAL RAINFALL:
It results when the leading edge (front) of a warm
air meets a cool air mass. The warmer air mass is
forced up over the cool air. As it rises the warm
air cools, moisture in the air condenses, cloud &
precipitation result.
7. Drizzle: It is a liquid precipitation consisting
of liquid water drops, smaller than .5mm in
diameter.
Snowfall: It is falling snowflakes or snow
crystal or also accumulation of snow during
specified period of time.
Sleet: It is formed when rains and the
temperature is below freezing. Slit is a rain and
snow mixed.
Drizzle Snowfall Sleet
8. Hail
Hail: Pellets of frozen rain which fall in showers from
cumulonimbus clouds.
Freezing Rain: It is defined as frozen drops that bounce
on the impact with the ground or other objects. It is the name
given to rain that falls when surface temperatures are
below freezing.
