In the late 16th century, Philip II of Spain launched the Spanish Armada in an attempt to invade England and convert it back to Catholicism under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. The Spanish Armada consisted of around 122 ships carrying over 30,000 men that set sail from Lisbon, Portugal in 1588. However, the Spanish Armada was defeated by the English navy through battles in the English Channel that resulted in the destruction of the Spanish ships, with only 87 returning to Spain. The failed invasion marked a decline in Spanish power and affirmed England's independence.
