THE ROMANS IN BRITAIN
 Julius Caesar first went to Britain in August 55 BC as part of
his Gallic wars, but he withdrew to the continent because of
the horrible weather. He took with him two Romans legions.
 In 54 B.C, Caesar came to Britain again landing at Walmer
near Deal in Kent. This time he brought with him no fewer
than five legions but he went back to Gaul (Gallia) to put down
a rebellion.
 The actual Roman Invasion of Britain took place about a
century later, when Claudius invaded the island in 43AD.
WHEN DID THE ROMANS GO TO BRITAIN?
In the first invasion, they won several battles
against the Celtic tribes (Britons) in south-east
England but they returned to France.
In the second invasion, the Romans crossed
the River Thames. After more fighting, the
British tribes promised to pay tribute to Rome
and were then left in peace for nearly a
century.
HOW DID THEY CONQUER THE ISLAND?
 The Celts were one the first people to ever live in
Britain, being the most powerful people in central
and northern Europe from around 750 BC to 12 BC.
 The Celtic people who lived in Britain were known as
“the Britons”, because of his place of residence.
WHO LIVED THERE BEFORE THEIR ARRIVAL?
 Boadiccea was a
warrior queen of the
British Iceni tribe who
led an uprising against
the occupying forces of
the Roman Empire
between the years 60
and 61 A.C.
 His husband
Prasutagus, was the
king of the Iceni tribe,
tribe that inhabited the
area of current Norfolk.
 She died in the 61 A.C.
WHO WAS BOADICCEA?
The main Roman regions in Britain were:
 Valentia
 Maxima Caesariensis
 Flavia Caesariensis
 Britannia Secunda
 Britannia Prima
The most important city was Londinium. There are still Roman
ruins in many British towns and cities, like in Bath, Kent, Isle
of Wight, Fishbourne…
MAIN ROMAN CITIES IN BRITAIN
The romans spoke Latin. English origin is not
Latin, but it has a strong influence from
Latin.
The calendar that we use nowadays was also
invented by the Roman emperor Julius
Caesar over 2000 years ago.
The Roman Empire had millions of people,
and to make sure how many people lived in
it, they counted them, so they were also the
inventors of the census.
ROMAN REMAINS AT PRESENT
 The wall was built from coast-
to-coast to protect Roman
England from the tribes who
lived in Scotland.
 The Romans began building
the wall in 122 A.D.
 It was 117 kilometers long.
 Hadrian’s Wall was built by the
orders of the Roman emperor
Hadrian .
 It took about 14 years to
complete it.
