Southwest Airlines Essay

Southwest Airlines case analysis
1. In what ways might airline customers be segmented? Airline customers might be segmented when
groups with varying needs and wants are recognized. They can be segmented on a number of different
types of things; such as age, gender, location, buying behavior, and demographics.
a. Which segments or niches would you consider Southwest s prime targets? Southwest s prime targets
would be that of business and leisure travelers. Business travelers are less price sensitive than leisure
travelers. They often travel on much shorter notice than leisure travelers. With the price of fuel rising

It also appears that with the stock incentives and the shares rising, that Southwest continue s to be a
rapidly growing firm, (Hartley, 2006).
4. On August 18, 1993, a fare war erupted. To initiate its new service between Cleveland and
Baltimore, Southwest announced a $49 fare (a sizeable reduction from the then standard rate of $300).
Its rivals, Continental and US Air, retaliated. Before long, the price was $19, not much more than the
tank of gas it would take to drive between the two cities and the airlines also supplied a free soft drink.
Evaluate he implications of such a price war for three airlines. Due to the fact that Southwest was
smart in their operation they were able to outwit their rivals. They were able to take the business of
their opponents and offering them fares at a valued price. The big airlines could not afford to keep up
with the legal battles as they were already losing money from not enough passenger capacity.
5. A price cut is the most easily matched marketing strategy and usually provides no lasting advantage
to any competitor. Identify the circumstances when you see it desirable to initiate a price cut and
potential price war. I think that I would initiate a price war when I see that competition needs to be
phased out. There are always new competitors offering some new amenity, but the war on fares will
always come about. It may be a certain season or a certain venue, but there will always be a need for

Materialism In Wlf And Eadwacer
The poem Wulf and Eadwacer displays a number of typical characteristics associated with the genre of
the Old English Elegies. In this essay I aim to identify such defining characteristics and discuss why,
from Paul Muldoon s translation, Wulf and Eadwacer is in every sense an Old English Elegy. I will
examine the environment in which the poem is set, the theme of social isolation, the lif is laene motif,
the ubi sunt lamentation and the medieval concept of wyrd . I will highlight and support with
examples how each of these features are present themselves and their significance in the classification
of this poem as an Old English Elegy.
A key feature of Medieval writing is the environment in which the poem is set. This gives the ... Show

The poem is a mere nineteen lines in length and in some academic opinions is more like a riddle than
an elegy, but as Anne L. Klinck says in The Old English Elegies: A Critical Edition and Genre Study ,
Indeed, the poem s riddling quality is an essential ingredient, although it has far greater cogency as a
love lament . The unnamed speaker seen in the poem is held in common with the elegies The
Wanderer and The Seafarer and is yet another aspect affirming the poems classification as an Old

Syria Refugee Crisis Essay

The Syrian Refugee Crisis: Canada is Not Playing its Role.
The Syrian civil war originating in 2011 has put millions in perilous situations, now involving most of
the international community. With approximately 6.5 million people internally displaced, and millions
more fleeing the country as refugees or seeking refugee status, the Syrian war has become a
worldwide refugee crisis, in desperate need of international help1. Over the past couple decades,
Canada has proved to be a leader in the acceptance of refugees from around the world, especially
during a crisis. But as of today, the country has done little to fulfill its global role in protecting those
affected in Syria, mainly due to processing delays ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through the RHSP, it is estimated that Canada accepts 25,000 refugees every year6, taking in around
one tenth of the yearly total of refugees relocated.7 Moreover, when it comes to human crises, Canada
has a history of fast tracking refugee applications originating from the countries affected, in order to
free citizens from harm as quickly as possible. These crises include the 2007 war in Iraq, the 2010
earthquake in Haiti, and the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, together involving thousands of
foreigners granted temporary residence permits or permanent residence in very little time8. But in
Syria s case, Canada has accepted a mere 200 refugees, even though several thousands of dollars have
been raised by the 85 private sponsor groups that exist within Canada and are formally recognized by
the government9. This effort on the part of the Canadian government pales in comparison to several
other countries of resettlement. To avoid increasing the Syrian death toll of more than 100,000 to date,
neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan have accepted 1 million, 667,636, and
588,979 Syrian refugees respectfully10. Many European countries have also done their part. Sweden
alone has offered a new home to over 30,000 Syrian refugees at least for the time being11.
Canada s failure to live up to expectations is in part to do with unreasonably long refugee application
processing time, and poor management of these

How Did Andrew Carnegie Contribute To Power
Andrew Carnegie is the perfect example of a rags to riches story. Mr. Carnegie started out as an
extremely poor immigrant boy from Scotland. He slowly worked his way up in the world, picking up
random jobs and investing in different companies. Eventually, he took advantage of advancement in
the steel industry and virtually created a monopoly. This made Andrew Carnegie an extremely wealthy
man. His fortunes exceeded what would be 14 trillion dollars in todays currency (Graybar). Because
of Andrew Carnegie s extreme wealth, he was a very powerful person who used his power to benefit
mankind. Andrew Carnegie used the power he had in a very positive way. Carnegie often donated
money to different causes. For example, one of his goals from the time he was a young man was to
help in the accomplishment of world peace. So, after he sold his steel company for $480 million (or in
today s dollars, about 14 trillion dollars), he started attempting to complete his goal. Between the years

The Problem With Public Shaming
Most people believe that public humiliation is cruel and unusual punishment, yet it seems to be the
only thing working. Doxxing is when you take someone s personal info info such as social security
numbers or address and post it for the world to see. Some people still see doxxing as ineffective and
just flat out wrong as discussed Cole Stryker in The Problem with Public Shaming written in The
Nation, Stryker notions that public shaming doesn t work and that people need to talk about its effects
on people all around the world. Stryker discusses how doxxing and Scarlet Letters are one in the same
and are equally bad to do, he even And when it slithers its tentacles in a person s life, we become

The only thing Stryker and I can agree is the old way of public shaming doesn t work. In this day and
age, you can t do things like that anymore, as it simply doesn t work. as Stryker says scarlet letters
stopped working because with planes, trains and automobiles, if people were being shamed they just
left and moved somewhere else. So we turn instead to public humiliation, an organic form of social
control that never went away completely, (Stryker 2.) The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel
Hawthorne depicts a woman pregnant out of wedlock and she gets branded with a red A for adultery, a
very clear case of public shaming and humiliation. Like Stryker discuss scarlet letters just don t work
anymore. If that happened today (even though it wouldn t) she would just leave town and live
somewhere else. So I do agree with Stryker that things like that are a way of the past. Doxxing is the
new world of public shaming and it s working. As seen in this story from the Charlottesville riots in
august. Logan Smith, the man behind the Twitter account @YesYoureRacist, began posting photos of
alleged white supremacist protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia and gained over 300,000 followers in
a single weekend, some of whom helped him expose the identities of the protesters. One of the people

The Concept Of Virtual Private Network
Executive Summary
The report focuses on the concept of virtual private network. Virtual private network enables remote
connections without the need of cables or leased wires. It leverages the capability of public
network(i.e. the internet) to provide remote connections between different sites globally.
Further, the report introduces the scope and objectives of Design Sheet metal private limited, the
organisation which is trying to expand its operations throughout the Australian continent. The report
proposes the implementation of virtual private network technology through CISCO AnyConnect

Technically, VPN extends the concept of Local area network, where the main LAN at the company
headquarters is connected to multiple LANs in different company locations and individual users
(Protocols, 2008). Most organizations develop an intranet, which is an internal network used only by
company employees. It allowed all the employees to have one single access point for company
resources and updates. Implementing a VPN allowed remote users to access the intranet from any
location or even their homes (Tyson Crawford, 2015).
Design Sheet Metal
Design Sheet Metal Pty Ltd is a manufacturing and packaging company which provides leading
supply of flashings and rainwater products. Established in 2003, the company has the reputation for
providing quality products and has one of the fastest turnaround times i.e. less than 24 hours.
Currently, it is looking to expand to all parts of Australia beyond the current locations, namely,
Bendigo, Ballarat, Mornington and Bellarine Peninsula, Geelong and Melbourne CBD.
They provide delivery to 70 80 sites on a daily basis and would like to keep up the same level of
service in different Australian states. The office Head Quarters will be based in Melbourne with the
officials travelling to the different sites on occasions for recording, monitoring and evaluating the
ongoing progress for expansion (Metal, 2015).

Psychodynamic Disability
Abstract
Physical disability causes not only physical, but also psychological and emotional issues in people.
Some psychological effects include depression, isolation, fear, anger, and a sense of loss after a
debilitating injury. These reactions are caused by the dramatic changes in their lives, both socially and
functionally. In order to gain back the most physical function possible, a patient must first address and
cope with the psychological aspects of the disability. If a patient does not overcome each
psychological stage that accompanies the disability, it is unlikely that they will gain the same level of
function nor be as emotionally content with their life if they had done so.
A debilitating injury causes not only a lack of traditional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first was formed from the theories of loss and grief, while the second is based on the
psychological theory of stress. The stage model was the first model used in the field of athletic
rehabilitation and is linked with the theories of loss and grief, meaning the patient feels as if they have
lost an important part of their life through the injury. (Tatsumi, 2014) The ideal psychological
condition for full recovery is one in which the injured knows of the difficulties, but controls their
emotions in order to determine what is necessary for recovery. (Tatsumi, 1998) According to Britton
W Brewer, the stage model was lacking in predictive value, and he proposed a cognitive appraisal
model as a replacement. The cognitive appraisal model was formed from the theory of cognitive
appraisal for stress and coping , the work of Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. In this model, the
injured person s assessment of the injury determines their emotional reaction along with their
behavioral reaction, meaning how well they will respond to rehabilitation efforts. This model is based
on cognitive behavioral therapy, and was designed to change the athletes negative views about their
injuries as well as educate and encourage them about their options in recovery. It became a common
method of speeding up the process of rehabilitation among athletes. (Tatsumi 2014) The stages of this
model include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and can occur in any order. It is
crucial that they occur, and the lack of these emotions can be a sign of a potential problem. (Petitpas,
1995) Combined with grief therapy, the stage model) elicits grief to promote acceptance and true
mental recovery. In a sense, the stage model was very effective. However, the model which states that
injured athletes must overcome the grief stage in order to make

information and now gain an online education. Online education is on the rise. People are choosing to
get an online education more so now because people are busier than ever and more jobs are requiring
a college education. Also with these larger companies closing and laying off employees, people who
once had a job are now faced with the challenge of looking for a new jobs sometimes with no skills to

This anxiety is what you call social phobia. Phobias are the single largest disorder of all anxiety cases
of phobic disorders. Anxiety disorders involve fierce worry and self consciousness about everyday
social livings. They often worry about fear of being judged by others or behaving in a way that might
cause embarrassment or lead to ridicule such as harm. An online education stops all phobias and
disorders for those that have these health issues. Online provides a cost savings for students because
they do not have to spend the gas to attend a college. There may not be a suitable college in proximity
so by taking online classes you save money by buying less gas. Also online classes will save the
mileage and damage on your vehicle. If the college is a long distance away there will be more miles

saying it cost less to take online courses than it does to go to a junior college or university. I am what I
call distant learning because I live in Texas and attending a university in Arizona. I can do everything

My Favorite Vacation Spot
My Favorite Family Vacation Spot
As soon as I got of the plane and breathed in that City air I new my life would change for the better. I
was waiting for this day for the past several months. It was the first time I would go with my father
and brothers on their Boys Only Vacation . I was thrilled at the fact that they would finally let me tag
along with them. This year they decided to go to Washington D.C. I had never been to D.C before, and
what made it even better was the fact that around the time we would arrive it would be snowing. It
was my first time ever seeing snow with my naked eye. So when the time came we headed out to
Tampa International Airport. We checked our bags, went threw security and waiting in line before
entering the aircraft. It was about a 2 hour flight before we arrived in the place that now has my heart
till the day I die. As soon as we stepped out the Airport my eyes were widened by the site of seeing
snow for the first time. The snow felt as if it was made out of a snow cone machine. The sound of my
feet stomping in the snow like stepping on packing peanuts is the sound that I will listen to for hours.
After about a quarter of a mile walk we got to the subway station where for the first time I
experienced how busy big cities can be. We got our cards and headed downstairs to where the subway
trains were. The sound of a jazz musician playing Duke Ellington s Rhapsody in Blue made me want
to give the man all the money in my pocket but sadly I couldn t. There was also the smell of chili
cheese dogs that the people next to us were trying to scarf down before the train arrived. Finally it
arrived and this was my first time on a subway car. The feeling of my butt on the rough cushioned
chairs wasn t the best feeling in the world. The sight on many people from Jamaican to Irish was one
that I haven t seen in such a small compacted space. I could also see the sight of Jefferson Memorial
and the Potomac River as we passed them was breathtaking. We passed a few other sights such as the
Washington Monument, The Lincoln Memorial and the WW2 Memorial. As we walked off the train
we could hear the conductor giving everyone safety instructions and telling them to step away from
the doors.

Art Is An Important Part Of Education
What is art? Is it just painting or can it be a number of creations, such as, music, dancing, theater,
pictures, sculptures, poems, stories, or videos. When I think of art, I think of all of these different
creations listed as art. Art is anything that can inspire a person, or create feelings from looking,
touching, or hearing. The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and
imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be
appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (google.com). Art is a way for humans to
communicate what they feel in their hearts. Although, some people may not agree that art is an
important part of education without it education could have been lost today. In the past ten years that I
know of, art has slowly been fading away in the educational environment. This can be any subject
from: theater, dance, band, and even just art classes in general. Our education has slowly started to
only focus on core academic classes. While some people in our education system may not perceive
this as a true fact; there is evidence to support that art has declined in public education. For theater and
dance in elementary schools, the percentages of schools making these art forms available went from

Definition On Extracurricular Activities
Definition on Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular activities allow students to pursue interests
outside of a standardized context (Strate,1996). Extracurricular activities are the activities that caters
the students voluntary involvement that is situated at the external realm of the academic curriculum of
a school or in a university. These activities encourage students to permissively expose themselves with
others of the same age with a purpose. However, extracurricular activities are offered to all students
but volunteer activities are not always extracurricular activities. Every activity is a students initiative
in order to help others such as feeding programs, tutorials, etc. On the other hand, extracurricular
activities are not only made for the purpose of allowing the students to do social outreach but for them
to interact with others and build public relationship that would help them along during their stay in the
university. This present study aims to investigate if these extracurricular activities cannot only be
defined by the following involvements, but it could serve as an outlet for students from academics. ...

Pros And Cons Of Exhibition Driving
How many things do you get pulled over for, scolded, and fined hundreds of dollars for, maybe just
because a cop needs to give more tickets by the end of the year, or isn t having a good day? Exhibition
driving could be one of them, and it especially targets people who are into cars. Exhibition driving is
just being loud, chirping tires, or excessive acceleration without speeding. There needs to be a finer
line between exhibition driving and reckless driving. Too many people get fined, or if you have a
restricted license like a 15 year old, exhibition driving is six points and will cause you to lose your
license, just for having a loud or fast car.
Think about all the things that can get you stopped, no seatbelt, tires are too big, a chain hanging from
your mirror. Some of it is ridiculous and people have better things to do. Should you really be getting
pulled over and fined because most people can t tell the difference between reckless and exhibition
driving. Here s a few differences; reckless driving puts lives in danger, drifting, speeding, swerving in
and out of traffic, etc etc. Exhibition driving involves accelerating fast, loud exhaust, chirping tires,
and revving an engine. The differences between these is that reckless driving can result in people
getting hurt as the driver of the car doesn t care about anything other than showboating. Exhibition
driving causes no harm, it is just another pointless law that lets cops pull you over because they have
nothing better to do.
People think exhibition driving includes swerving through traffic, burnouts and drifting around
corners, but in my opinion and the state law, that is reckless driving and that should be enforced. Many
high end vehicles, such as the new muscle cars and older pickups, that people buy are street legal, and
can go vast amount of speed, that doesn t mean that they are always speeding. In exhibition driving,
you can get pulled over for accelerating fast, for example, at a stop light and you put the throttle down
quite a ways on a clear road. A cop will hear it and pull you over. Let me show you an example in a
mechanical point of view. All the driver is doing is putting down the accelerator, which opens the
throttle body, which when opened,

Matthew And John Comparison
Honors 151 Exam 2 The gospels are meant to serve as a recollection of Jesus life and ministry.
Although they are placed together at the beginning of the New Testament, the gospels of Mark,
Matthew, Luke, and John differ from one another. Matthew and Luke begin with the accounts of Jesus
conception and birth, while Mark and John introduce us to an older Jesus prophesized by John the

of John. For the former three, it is hypothesized that Mark was the first gospel to be written, and that

The main difference would be the setting of each discourse. The Sermon on the Mount was conducted
on top a hill that overlooked a huge crowd that had gathered to listen to Jesus (Mt 5:1 2). Compared to
the more private setting of the Last Supper, in which Jesus is gathered around a table with his
disciples, the Sermon on the Mount renders a public account of Jesus. As a public figure, Jesus
accommodated his teachings that day to refer to the human condition and the law. He gives the crowd
a disclaimer at the very beginning when he mentions that he has not come to abolish the law, but to
fulfill it (Mt 5:17). He then goes on to advise the crowd on how to handle anger, adultery, divorce,
oaths, retaliation, and enemies. In doing so, he relates each subject back to the law and explains a new
point for each and how it fulfills God s overall commandment. An example of this is when he
mentions how the law says that you are to love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but God
commands that you pray for your prosecutors and love those who hate you (Mt 5:43 45). This further
reinforces the point that the kingdom that Jesus preaches of is not achieved by following the world s
rules, but only those of God. This example also correlates back to the passage in which Jesus washes
the disciples feet. He lowers himself to the position of a servant in order to teach them a lesson of
humility and

Variola Major Essay
Smallpox is a a disease that is contagious and can possibly be fatal. First, one type of the smallpox
disease is the Variola major. Variola major comes in four different forms. These forms are ordinary,
modified, flat, and hemorrhagic. Next, the other type of smallpox virus is Variola minor. This type of
smallpox is less severe, and also less common. There are numerous symptoms that come with the
smallpox disease. In the early age of the disease, symptoms include, a fever, vomiting, weakness, and
body aches. These symptoms usually last for up to four days. The person that is effected by smallpox
would have a fever within 101 to 104 degrees Fahrenheit. In the later stage of smallpox, different
symptoms appear. These symptoms include a rash within the mouth of the infected person. The virus

One threat that smallpox poses, is the use of it in biological warfare. According to Colette Flight, in
the 1990s the public discovered that Russia planned to turn smallpox into an effective weapon . A
smallpox outbreak could be devastating to the population without proper precautions. There were also
a few cases of smallpox outbreaks due to a patient being misdiagnosed. For example, Colette Flight
states, Muzza had been misdiagnosed as suffering from a bad reaction to penicillin . Colette also
states, Janet Parker was infected with smallpox, but was initially diagnosed as a drug rash . We can
learn from history that smallpox does spread easily. The Benedict test, is a test to determine whether a

How Trade Policies Affect Economic Growth And Development
One puzzle of the world economy is that... Why are some countries so much richer than other? Or to
put it differently, why have some economies per capita income been growing at faster rates than
others? Most likely, there are numerous factors that play a role. This essay is an attempt to enumerate
and discuss at least some factors. A satisfactory understanding of economic growth also requires an
appreciation of how countries interact with each other, because countries income levels are
interdependent. Trade policies help foster these interactions between countries (and businesses). The
question of how trade policies affect economic growth and development has become a controversial
topic. After World War 2, colonial areas that gained independence after the war believed they could
reach higher income levels like their former colonizer only through rapid government controlled
industrialization. Many developing countries adopted measures intended to reduce their independence
on the export of primary goods (such as coffee, copper, and wheat). The justification for such policies
came from a belief that demand of primary goods to manufactures would decline in the future due to
technological progress in developed countries. This idea came to be known as the Singer Prebisch
Hypothesis. In other words, countries which rely on exports of agricultural products would eventually
grow less quickly than other countries whose main exports were manufactured goods. Hence, the key

From the very moment Duddy s grandfather declares, A man without land is nobody, Duddy is
prepared to seek the land of his dreams no matter what it would cost him in the long run. He s

his methods of fulfilling his goals are extremely awful. In the end of the novel, Duddy has obtained all
the land that he had desired, but he succeeds through immoral and contemptible means. No doubt,
Duddy is extremely clever, but his lack of moral principles are what leads to his final failure. Perhaps

Virgil immediately accepts the job offer, and thus, Duddy does not need to compensate Virgil. From

The years of 1941 and 1942 paint a vivid description of ugly, taking place events too hard to take in,
and the death of 6 million innocent people. The Final Solution in an excerpt from Witnesses to the
Holocaust: An Oral History, where Sam Bankhalter and Hinda Kibort detail their horrifying account of
Hitler s rash and day to day life in the Nazi concentration camps where they were imprisoned. The
Final Solution was a plan systematically matriculated by the Nazi to exterminate European Jews by
placing them in work camps designed for certain death.
Sam Bankhalter was just fourteen at the time when he was captured by the Nazis in his native land of
Poland and exiled to Auschwitz. In a detailed account he paints the picture of life as a Jew during
Hitler s fury and the unimaginable accounts of terror that occurred. According to Bankhalter, racism of

barbed wire and Nazi mocking Jews cutting off men s beards and beating them as they yelled at the
Jews to assemble. The Nazi s only gave them about twenty minutes to pack, leaving them time to only
gather the necessities, which would only be stripped from them later. Bankhalter was only in the

Immanuel Kant s Duties Towards Animals
In his work titles, Duties Towards Animals, Immanuel Kant makes the assertion that humans have no
obligations towards animals, as humans are superior to other forms of life ( Duties Towards Animals
564). He defends this position by defining animals to not be self conscious, as Kant only counts beings
that are rational and autonomous in his principle of humanity (Groundwork of the Metaphysics of
Morals 43). This principle states that all humans should always be treated as an end, and never merely
as a means to achieve your own personal goals (Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals 42). Kant
proceeds to point out that we have a duty to have positive interactions with animals so that humans
can practice their gracious behavior, and ultimately apply it to human interactions. It is ... Show more

Additionally, it is declared that a human heart can be judged by the demeanor in which he handles
animals ( Duties Towards Animals 564). Kant makes the observation that animals take great care of
their young, which should lead humans to develop an admiration for them. Even seemingly cruel and
bloodthirsty animals, such as the wolf, exhibit love for their kin, which makes it hard to justify cruel
acts towards any animal ( Duties Towards Animals 564). Those who are desensitized and used to
killing irrational animals without a second thought, such as butchers and doctors, are not permitted to
serve on juries, as they are calloused from dealing with the death of animals ( Duties Towards Animals
565). Although scientists who use animals in experiments are morbid, Kant deems this acceptable
behavior, as their tests will ultimately benefit humans ( Duties Towards Animals 565). Likewise,
animals are referred to as man s instruments in this passage, implying that their sole purpose of
existence is to enhance man s quality of

Supporting Virtual Teams
Issues IT department face supporting virtual teams
First, it is very challenging to build trust within virtual teams. It is very hard for you to trust people
who you do not know well or those whom you have not observed working over time. Secondly, in
virtual teams, it is difficult to obtain group process gains (positive synergy) that many times
accompany face to face communication. Process losses (negative synergy) are more likely. It is
difficult to create team synergy and to overcome the absence of informal, interactive learning. Thirdly,
there is a feeling of isolation and detachment associated with the virtual teamwork. There is no
physical interaction which is associated with verbal and non verbal ques and thus, there is absence of
social interaction with supervisors and coworkers. Virtual team members may be less productive and
satisfied than their counterparts working face to face due to feeling of isolation and detachment.
Fourthly, it is tricky to balance technical and interpersonal skills among the virtual members. There is
a challenge for a virtual teal leader to recruit, select and retain team members who have a good

`` Remainders `` By Shana Myra
Changes The short story Remainders by Shana Myra is about a Jewish Canadian woman who finds
love in Israel with a man named Ben. They start a family, which results in Naomi s priorities
changing, an example of what happens to many women when they become mothers. The first example
that highlights these changes is the landing of the rocket in the backyard: Naomi reacts childishly at
first, but, after the birth of her daughter, she realizes the danger the rocket posed. A second example, is
how Naomi is careless towards a Palestinian man, but after the birth of Sarah, she is much more
cautious. The final example reveals that Naomi s daughter comes before Ben, as seen when Naomi
and Sarah moving back to Canada. Therefore, Naomi s priorities change, as seen in her reaction to the
rocket, her encounter with a Palestinian man, and her moving back to Canada.
Naomi s change in priorities is shown through her view of the rocket. The story opens with rocket
landing in the backyard. Naomi is not alarmed by it, or by its loud thud. She has three reactions: first
she [chokes] back excited laughter instead of reacting in fear. Then instead of calling for help, she
almost point[s] and clap[s]. Her final reaction, saying, look at that (23), is an example of her acting
childishly and not as a responsible adult should. On the other, Naomi s perspective of the rocket
changes due to motherhood: she becomes protective of her family. She imagines what her families

The Knight
The Canterbury Tales is a story told of a trek involving many members of the Middle English society.
The beginning of the story starts with an explanation of what is happening in the sense of the trip to
Canterbury, but then it leads to the explanation of each character involved in it. The first character
introduced in this story is the mighty and noble Knight. Within the introduction of the Knight, the
narrator shows: the job he had, the expectation for him in his job, stereotypes about his character, and
criticism of society due to his character. After understanding all these descriptions of the Knight,
modern translations to the audiences can be brought into light of the insight. The Knight had a job that

A stereotype that is mistaken within the society, personally dealing with the Knight himself, is the
stereotype of a Knight s manly, fatherhood leadership. The Knight has a son, the Squire, which is

socially expected feminine traits and interests. The Knight has struggles with the fact of these interests
his son has, and doesn t know how to handle them within his own expectations. The society expects
his son to be much like his father; although, the son is more of his own person. These stereotypes and
expectations placed on the relationship between the Knight and his son, shows a strong criticism of the
Middle English society. It brings out the view of the masculine, chauvinist view of men which states
between the lines what makes a man, a man. The society does not have good Biblical views on true

Gender Trouble By Judith Butler
INTRO
Judith Butler, the author of Gender Trouble (1990), is an American philosopher who was born in
Cleveland, Ohio, in 1956.
A feminist (that is, a participant in the cultural, political, and theoretical currents surrounding the
advocacy of the rights of women), she has published more than a dozen books and has been active in
debates ranging from lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transsexual rights to Middle Eastern politics. She
works on identity issues and prejudice against minorities, having personal experience of both. Her
mother lost her Hungarian family in the Nazi Holocaust during World War II, and, as a lesbian, Butler
has herself experienced discrimination. She has spoken about the difficulty of coming out as a

Butler intervened in these debates by questioning the very idea of stable gender identity.
THE ANSWER
No political revolution is possible without a radical shift in one s notion of the possible and the real.
Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity
Judith Butler argues that gender becomes ´real´ by a person unconsciously acting in ways that are
accepted to be masculine or feminine and that even biological sex is a product of culture.
Gender is imposed through patterns of thought in the society, but history shows that identities have
changed over time, then it is impossible to say that they are fixed and eternal.
Gender Trouble is an original and radical text that employs for political ends the analytical methods of
poststructuralist theory (and its challenge to categories and ideas of objective truth).
IDEAS
Because there is neither an essence that gender expresses or externalizes nor an objective ideal to
which gender aspires, and because gender is not a fact, the various acts of gender create the idea of
gender, and without those acts, there would be no gender at

Janicke. In contrast, he says, if a solution to an environmental problem requires an intervention in the

Furthermore, Ecological Modernization states that ecological innovations must meet the following
three qualifications to succeed: First, the solution they propose needs to be to a problem that affects

At times, the jetty is partially or completely submerged, which makes its constantly changing nature
even more apparent. Land Artist Michael Heizer s work plays with the entropic as well. His project,
Double Negative [see Figure 2.5] consists of an enormous tract carved into the earth. With no
framework or scaffolding to hold its shape, the piece is left open to the effects of erosion. In both
Spiral Jetty and Double Negative, the entropic nature of the pieces allow the work to be designed as a

Spiral Jetty and Double Negative are the combination of landscape and non landscape. It is instead a

Smithson also advocated the use of post industrial sites for his work. For example, Spiral Jetty was
constructed from a ruined site; in fact, the abandoned oil rigs situated nearby were a large part of what
drew his attention to it. Furthermore, what was natural about the site appeared artificial: the water in
the Utah lake was colored an unnatural red by the algae living in it and the earth was cracked and

The Invention Of The Modern Automobile Essay
Others Although Ford s industry that he built was the best and really what launched this whole craze
and really kicked it off. It was not the only automotive industry that has made risks that paid off big
time. As a matter of fact the blueprint for the modern automobile was perfected in Germany and
France in the late 1800s, so we weren t even the one who perfected the modern automobile. General
Motors On September 16, 1908 Durant spends $2,000 to incorporate General Motors in New Jersey.
Durant a high school dropout had made his fortune building horse drawn carriages and in fact he hated
cars he thought they were noisy, smelly, and dangerous (William Durant creates General Motors,
2016). but the giant company he built would dominate the American auto industry for
decades(William Durant creates General Motors, 2016). In the first years of the 20th century however
that industry was a mess. There were about 45 different car companies in the United States most of
which sold only a handful of cars each year (William Durant creates General Motors, 2016).
Industrialist Benjamin Briscoe called this way of doing business manufacturing gambling and he
proposed a better idea (William Durant creates General Motors, 2016). To build consumer confidence
and drive the weakest car companies out of business he wanted to consolidate the largest and most
reliable manufacturers into one big company (William Durant creates General Motors, 2016). This

The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead Essay
The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead
The Fountainhead is a novel of gigantic proportions. It deals with great talent and great mediocrity,
with great love and great hatred, with great ambition and equally great complacence. It
unpretentiously chooses to steer clear of the much hyped common man, with his commonplace dreams
and aspirations.
The theme of The Fountainhead can be summarized in the famous line by the author man s ego is the
fountainhead of human progress . The novel exalts egotism, which is generally looked upon in our
world with great dislike. The protagonist, Howard Roark, is a man used by the author to exemplify
this philosophy. He is a man of outstanding genius whose only fault seems to be ... Show more content

Roark is a man who lives up to the word man . He believes that man alone has power over himself He
does not believe in God or in destiny, simple because he doesn t need to. In order to be truly great a
man must be physically, mentally and spiritually be involved in his work, the way Roark was. Roark
treats his work with the respect and reverence that other men lavish over God. To him, insincerity
towards one s work is the worst blasphemy possible. This is the line of thought that runs throughout
the novel.
The hallmark of Roark is work is his complete irreverence for all precedents, traditions and
conventions. His ideas are too revolutionary to be accepted, but he refuses, at any point of time to
compromise with his ideals, no matter what his compulsions may be. He is a man of such immense
integrity, that he would rather break stones in a quarry than make a substandard building. which is
what the world demands of him.
The reason why some people seek to destroy Howard Roark is that his very presence evokes an
unreasonable fear in their hearts. This quest to destroy the genius within him started from the very
beginning of his career when he was expelled from The Stanton institute of Technology, where he had
been studying architecture. All his teachers except his mathematics professor were against him

STUDENTS BEVERAGE SPENDING USING AN ECONOMETRICS MODEL ABSTRACT The

different in some respects (e.g., age, gender, status, preference). In total, 59 university undergraduates

Their tastes may not be the same. George Bernard Shaw From the words, we can understand that not
everyone has the same preferences. According to Jeffrey M.Perloff (2012), a consumer chooses
between bundles of goods by ranking them as to the pleasure the consumer gets from consuming each.
As consumers, we will consume a good which can give us a higher utility compare to others. III.
LITERATURE REVIEW Before this paper is conduct, some journal articles have been review to
determine which variables should be included in my own survey to get an accurate data set from the
respondents of UUM student. Besides, through literature review, the methodology used by other
authors is able to give a direction for the model that will be form in this paper. Through literature
review from the journal with the entitled Advertising and Consumption of Alcoholic Beverages, the
author, Arch G. Woodside (1999) stated that advertisement has no significant impact on the
consumption of alcoholic beverages. Through the literature done by the author, prices and income is
included in the analysis of the model that has significant effect to the consumption of alcoholic
beverages. Through the second literature review on the journal entitled Children as Consumers
Investigating Child Daily Expenditure Data, the author, Lisa Farrell and Michael A. Shields (2007)

income. For independent

Reflective Account on Communication Essay example
Reflective account on communication
This assignment is a reflective account on communicating with a patient who cannot communicate
verbally. To remain confidential I will call the patient, Patient A. I m going to discuss the importance
of non verbal communication within a healthcare setting. Patient A was a 63 year old lady suffering
from MND which resulted in her losing her speech.
This was my first shift back from having a few days off and I returned to work on a night shift. Patient
A was admitted to the hospice that day. She was admitted for general deterioration and she had tried to
maintain her independence up until breaking point. It was handed over she has aphasia.
Her inability to use her speech related muscles meant that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I explained why we were unable to swap mattresses, due to it being late at night and one not being
available but offered her a recliner chair instead. She accepted the offer, and appeared to be happy
with this.
Myself and a colleague transferred Patient A into the recliner, she was then able to get some sleep that
night in the recliner chair. This information was recorded on the patient s notes and handed over to the
day staff on the next morning.
I will now discuss how I was thinking and feeling during this event. I had been working at the hospice
for over a year and had looked after patients with MND before. I had an idea of how it can affect
communicating with the patient. I was apprehensive about approaching Patient A as I didn t know
what difficulties I may find whilst trying to communicate with her. She was able to communicate very
well using the pen and writing down, and using hand gestures. I learnt that by speaking clearly with
easy to answer questions we were able to communicate with each other effectively. Afterwards I felt
pleased that were able to determine the problem and find a solution for her, despite the communication
barriers.
Evaluation
I feel that the communicating between Patient A and myself worked well during this event. I noticed
that she was uncomfortable by her body language and I picked up quickly which method was best to

Airline customers might be segmented when groups with varying needs and wants are recognized. They can be segmented on a number of different types of things; such as age, gender, location, buying behavior, and demographics. a. Which segments or niches would you consider Southwest s prime targets? Southwest s prime targets would be that of business and leisure travelers. To initiate its new service between Cleveland and Baltimore, Southwest announced a $49 fare (a sizeable reduction from the then standard rate of $300). Its rivals, Continental and US Air, retaliated. Before long, the price was $19, not much more than the tank of gas it would take to drive between the two cities and the airlines also supplied a free soft drink. Evaluate he implications of such a price war for three airlines. Due to the fact that Southwest was smart in their operation they were able to outwit their rivals. They were able to take the business of their opponents and offering them fares at a valued price. The big airlines could not afford to keep up with the legal battles as they were already losing money from not enough passenger capacity. 5. A price cut is the most easily matched marketing strategy and usually provides no lasting advantage to any competitor. • 4. Materialism In Wlf And Eadwacer The poem Wulf and Eadwacer displays a number of typical characteristics associated with the genre of the Old English Elegies. In this essay I aim to identify such defining characteristics and discuss why, from Paul Muldoon s translation, Wulf and Eadwacer is in every sense an Old English Elegy. I will examine the environment in which the poem is set, the theme of social isolation, the lif is laene motif, the ubi sunt lamentation and the medieval concept of wyrd . The Syrian civil war originating in 2011 has put millions in perilous situations, now involving most of the international community. With approximately 6.5 million people internally displaced, and millions more fleeing the country as refugees or seeking refugee status, the Syrian war has become a worldwide refugee crisis, in desperate need of international help1. Through the RHSP, it is estimated that Canada accepts 25,000 refugees every year6, taking in around one tenth of the yearly total of refugees relocated.7 Moreover, when it comes to human crises, Canada has a history of fast tracking refugee applications originating from the countries affected, in order to free citizens from harm as quickly as possible. These crises include the 2007 war in Iraq, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, together involving thousands of foreigners granted temporary residence permits or permanent residence in very little time8. But in Syria s case, Canada has accepted a mere 200 refugees, even though several thousands of dollars have been raised by the 85 private sponsor groups that exist within Canada and are formally recognized by the government9. This effort on the part of the Canadian government pales in comparison to several other countries of resettlement. To avoid increasing the Syrian death toll of more than 100,000 to date, neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan have accepted 1 million, 667,636, and 588,979 Syrian refugees respectfully10. Many European countries have also done their part. Sweden alone has offered a new home to over 30,000 Syrian refugees at least for the time being11. He slowly worked his way up in the world, picking up random jobs and investing in different companies. Eventually, he took advantage of advancement in the steel industry and virtually created a monopoly. This made Andrew Carnegie an extremely wealthy man. His fortunes exceeded what would be 14 trillion dollars in todays currency (Graybar). Because of Andrew Carnegie s extreme wealth, he was a very powerful person who used his power to benefit mankind. Andrew Carnegie used the power he had in a very positive way. Carnegie often donated money to different causes. For example, one of his goals from the time he was a young man was to help in the accomplishment of world peace. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only thing Stryker and I can agree is the old way of public shaming doesn t work. In this day and age, you can t do things like that anymore, as it simply doesn t work. as Stryker says scarlet letters stopped working because with planes, trains and automobiles, if people were being shamed they just left and moved somewhere else. So we turn instead to public humiliation, an organic form of social control that never went away completely, (Stryker 2.) The Scarlet Letter written by Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts a woman pregnant out of wedlock and she gets branded with a red A for adultery, a very clear case of public shaming and humiliation. Like Stryker discuss scarlet letters just don t work anymore. If that happened today (even though it wouldn t) she would just leave town and live somewhere else. So I do agree with Stryker that things like that are a way of the past. Doxxing is the new world of public shaming and it s working. As seen in this story from the Charlottesville riots in august. • 11. Psychodynamic Disability Abstract Physical disability causes not only physical, but also psychological and emotional issues in people. Some psychological effects include depression, isolation, fear, anger, and a sense of loss after a debilitating injury. These reactions are caused by the dramatic changes in their lives, both socially and functionally. In order to gain back the most physical function possible, a patient must first address and cope with the psychological aspects of the disability. If a patient does not overcome each psychological stage that accompanies the disability, it is unlikely that they will gain the same level of function nor be as emotionally content with their life if they had done so. The first was formed from the theories of loss and grief, while the second is based on the psychological theory of stress. The stage model was the first model used in the field of athletic rehabilitation and is linked with the theories of loss and grief, meaning the patient feels as if they have lost an important part of their life through the injury. (Tatsumi, 2014) The ideal psychological condition for full recovery is one in which the injured knows of the difficulties, but controls their emotions in order to determine what is necessary for recovery. (Tatsumi, 1998) According to Britton W Brewer, the stage model was lacking in predictive value, and he proposed a cognitive appraisal model as a replacement. The cognitive appraisal model was formed from the theory of cognitive appraisal for stress and coping , the work of Richard Lazarus and Susan Folkman. In this model, the injured person s assessment of the injury determines their emotional reaction along with their behavioral reaction, meaning how well they will respond to rehabilitation efforts. This model is based on cognitive behavioral therapy, and was designed to change the athletes negative views about their injuries as well as educate and encourage them about their options in recovery. It became a common method of speeding up the process of rehabilitation among athletes. (Tatsumi 2014) The stages of this model include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance, and can occur in any order. It is crucial that they occur, and the lack of these emotions can be a sign of a potential problem. (Petitpas, 1995) Combined with grief therapy, the stage model) elicits grief to promote acceptance and true mental recovery. In a sense, the stage model was very effective. I was waiting for this day for the past several months. It was the first time I would go with my father and brothers on their Boys Only Vacation . I was thrilled at the fact that they would finally let me tag along with them. This year they decided to go to Washington D.C. I had never been to D.C before, and what made it even better was the fact that around the time we would arrive it would be snowing. It was my first time ever seeing snow with my naked eye. So when the time came we headed out to Tampa International Airport. We checked our bags, went threw security and waiting in line before entering the aircraft. It was about a 2 hour flight before we arrived in the place that now has my heart till the day I die. As soon as we stepped out the Airport my eyes were widened by the site of seeing snow for the first time. The snow felt as if it was made out of a snow cone machine. The sound of my feet stomping in the snow like stepping on packing peanuts is the sound that I will listen to for hours. After about a quarter of a mile walk we got to the subway station where for the first time I experienced how busy big cities can be. We got our cards and headed downstairs to where the subway trains were. The sound of a jazz musician playing Duke Ellington s Rhapsody in Blue made me want to give the man all the money in my pocket but sadly I couldn t. There was also the smell of chili cheese dogs that the people next to us were trying to scarf down before the train arrived. Finally it arrived and this was my first time on a subway car. I could also see the sight of Jefferson Memorial and the Potomac River as we passed them was breathtaking. When I think of art, I think of all of these different creations listed as art. Art is anything that can inspire a person, or create feelings from looking, touching, or hearing. The definition of art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power (google.com). Art is a way for humans to communicate what they feel in their hearts. Although, some people may not agree that art is an important part of education without it education could have been lost today. In the past ten years that I know of, art has slowly been fading away in the educational environment. This can be any subject from: theater, dance, band, and even just art classes in general. Our education has slowly started to only focus on core academic classes. While some people in our education system may not perceive this as a true fact; there is evidence to support that art has declined in public education. • 18. Pros And Cons Of Exhibition Driving How many things do you get pulled over for, scolded, and fined hundreds of dollars for, maybe just because a cop needs to give more tickets by the end of the year, or isn t having a good day? Exhibition driving could be one of them, and it especially targets people who are into cars. Exhibition driving is just being loud, chirping tires, or excessive acceleration without speeding. There needs to be a finer line between exhibition driving and reckless driving. Too many people get fined, or if you have a restricted license like a 15 year old, exhibition driving is six points and will cause you to lose your license, just for having a loud or fast car. Think about all the things that can get you stopped, no seatbelt, tires are too big, a chain hanging from your mirror. Some of it is ridiculous and people have better things to do. Should you really be getting pulled over and fined because most people can t tell the difference between reckless and exhibition driving. Here s a few differences; reckless driving puts lives in danger, drifting, speeding, swerving in and out of traffic, etc etc. Exhibition driving involves accelerating fast, loud exhaust, chirping tires, and revving an engine. The differences between these is that reckless driving can result in people getting hurt as the driver of the car doesn t care about anything other than showboating. Exhibition driving causes no harm, it is just another pointless law that lets cops pull you over because they have nothing better to do. People think exhibition driving includes swerving through traffic, burnouts and drifting around corners, but in my opinion and the state law, that is reckless driving and that should be enforced. Many high end vehicles, such as the new muscle cars and older pickups, that people buy are street legal, and can go vast amount of speed, that doesn t mean that they are always speeding. In exhibition driving, you can get pulled over for accelerating fast, for example, at a stop light and you put the throttle down quite a ways on a clear road. A cop will hear it and pull you over. Let me show you an example in a mechanical point of view. All the driver is doing is putting down the accelerator, which opens the throttle body, which when opened, ... For the former three, it is hypothesized that Mark was the first gospel to be written, and that Matthew and Luke wrote their accounts with the gospel of Mark and a lost document, referred to as Q, as sources (Oxford Christian Dictionary, 2005). The Sermon on the Mount was conducted on top a hill that overlooked a huge crowd that had gathered to listen to Jesus (Mt 5:1 2). Compared to the more private setting of the Last Supper, in which Jesus is gathered around a table with his disciples, the Sermon on the Mount renders a public account of Jesus. As a public figure, Jesus accommodated his teachings that day to refer to the human condition and the law. He gives the crowd a disclaimer at the very beginning when he mentions that he has not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it (Mt 5:17). He then goes on to advise the crowd on how to handle anger, adultery, divorce, oaths, retaliation, and enemies. In doing so, he relates each subject back to the law and explains a new point for each and how it fulfills God s overall commandment. An example of this is when he mentions how the law says that you are to love your neighbor and hate your enemy, but God commands that you pray for your prosecutors and love those who hate you (Mt 5:43 45). This further reinforces the point that the kingdom that Jesus preaches of is not achieved by following the world s rules, but only those of God. This example also correlates back to the passage in which Jesus washes the disciples feet. He lowers himself to the position of a servant in order to teach them a lesson of humility and ... • 22. How Trade Policies Affect Economic Growth And Development One puzzle of the world economy is that... Why are some countries so much richer than other? Or to put it differently, why have some economies per capita income been growing at faster rates than others? Most likely, there are numerous factors that play a role. This essay is an attempt to enumerate and discuss at least some factors. A satisfactory understanding of economic growth also requires an appreciation of how countries interact with each other, because countries income levels are interdependent. Trade policies help foster these interactions between countries (and businesses). The question of how trade policies affect economic growth and development has become a controversial topic. After World War 2, colonial areas that gained independence after the war believed they could reach higher income levels like their former colonizer only through rapid government controlled industrialization. Many developing countries adopted measures intended to reduce their independence on the export of primary goods (such as coffee, copper, and wheat). The justification for such policies came from a belief that demand of primary goods to manufactures would decline in the future due to technological progress in developed countries. This idea came to be known as the Singer Prebisch Hypothesis. In other words, countries which rely on exports of agricultural products would eventually grow less quickly than other countries whose main exports were manufactured goods. Hence, the key to economic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This principle states that all humans should always be treated as an end, and never merely as a means to achieve your own personal goals (Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals 42). • 41. The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead Essay The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead The Fountainhead is a novel of gigantic proportions. It deals with great talent and great mediocrity, with great love and great hatred, with great ambition and equally great complacence. It unpretentiously chooses to steer clear of the much hyped common man, with his commonplace dreams and aspirations. The theme of The Fountainhead can be summarized in the famous line by the author man s ego is the fountainhead of human progress . The novel exalts egotism, which is generally looked upon in our world with great dislike. The protagonist, Howard Roark, is a man used by the author to exemplify this philosophy. He is a man of outstanding genius whose only fault seems to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Roark is a man who lives up to the word man . He believes that man alone has power over himself He does not believe in God or in destiny, simple because he doesn t need to. In order to be truly great a man must be physically, mentally and spiritually be involved in his work, the way Roark was. Roark treats his work with the respect and reverence that other men lavish over God. To him, insincerity towards one s work is the worst blasphemy possible. This is the line of thought that runs throughout the novel. The hallmark of Roark is work is his complete irreverence for all precedents, traditions and conventions. His ideas are too revolutionary to be accepted, but he refuses, at any point of time to compromise with his ideals, no matter what his compulsions may be. He is a man of such immense integrity, that he would rather break stones in a quarry than make a substandard building. which is what the world demands of him. The reason why some people seek to destroy Howard Roark is that his very presence evokes an unreasonable fear in their hearts. This quest to destroy the genius within him started from the very beginning of his career when he was expelled from The Stanton institute of Technology, where he had been studying architecture. All his teachers except his mathematics professor were against him His boundless brilliance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To remain confidential I will call the patient, Patient A. I m going to discuss the importance of non verbal communication within a healthcare setting. Patient A was a 63 year old lady suffering from MND which resulted in her losing her speech. This was my first shift back from having a few days off and I returned to work on a night shift. I explained why we were unable to swap mattresses, due to it being late at night and one not being available but offered her a recliner chair instead. She accepted the offer, and appeared to be happy with this. Myself and a colleague transferred Patient A into the recliner, she was then able to get some sleep that night in the recliner chair. This information was recorded on the patient s notes and handed over to the day staff on the next morning. I will now discuss how I was thinking and feeling during this event. I had been working at the hospice for over a year and had looked after patients with MND before. I had an idea of how it can affect communicating with the patient. I was apprehensive about approaching Patient A as I didn t know what difficulties I may find whilst trying to communicate with her. She was able to communicate very well using the pen and writing down, and using hand gestures. I learnt that by speaking clearly with easy to answer questions we were able to communicate with each other effectively. Afterwards I felt pleased that were able to determine the problem and find a solution for her, despite the communication barriers. Evaluation I feel that the communicating between Patient A and myself worked well during this event. I noticed that she was uncomfortable by her body language and I picked up quickly which method was best to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
