Durkheim and the Relevance of His Theories in Modern Society
Treat social facts as things is an expression that epitomises the works of Emile Durkheim. This essay
focuses on four main sociological concepts proposed by the functionalist Emile Durkheim; the
division of labour; mechanical and organic solidarity; anomie and suicide, and examines their
relevance in contemporary society.
Along with Marx and Weber, Durkheim is considered one of the founding members of modern
sociology. He is also credited with making sociology a science through his application of scientific
and empirical research. Durkheim believed that sociology should be seen as a science separate from
other sciences such as psychology, by studying social facts objectively as things. (Kiviston, 2011)
Through his four major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
(McDonald, 2009)
Organic solidarity arose as a result of the industrial revolution when society became more multifaceted
and new ways of working emerged. This saw a decline in the collective conscience regarding shared
morals and beliefs as society began to progress and expand. The division of labour that arises as a
result of organic solidarity is complex and varied, resulting in people becoming more individualistic
and yet also interdependent. Society s social bonds now centred around the fact that people were
dependant on each other for the good and services required in their day to day lives. (McDonald,
2009)
As organic solidarity is typical of complex, industrialised societies, Durkheim s theory is very
applicable to modern life and the first world in particular. Individuality is a major feature of people
living in the western world today e.g. the USA, UK, and Ireland. This is evident in our political and
social thinking. Much emphasis is placed on personal rights and the belief that nothing is more
important than us. (Hughes et al, 1995) Meanwhile we are not self sufficient; we rely heavily on the
expertise of thousands globally to live our daily lives e.g. the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the
cars we drive etc. (Macionis and Plummer, 2005)
A huge increase in individualism came about because of organic solidarity resulting in a breakdown of
moral and ethical boundaries

A Doll House 3
A main character, Torvald, in the play A Doll House, by Henrik Ibsen could be viewed as a morally
ambiguous character. He displays the character traits of a morally ambiguous person. Torvald s
personal consumption of appearances shows how he treats his wife and home and personal pride.
Torvald s wife Nora is the center of several of the traits that classify him as a morally ambiguous
character. Nora is more like a possession to Torvald than a soul mate or wife. She is like a doll to him,
something that he can control and shape into what he wants. Nora is treated like a child and as if she
can not function a second without him to be there to tell her what to do. Her dependency on him is
extremely important to him because that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this she makes the decision to leave and request him never to talk to her again. Torvald s life was
based upon what he felt was right in society. HE cared so greatly what
the world would think of him rather than the true thought of being a family. He could not
determine what a real life was because he only lived his life upon other expectations. The play s
character Torvald shows moral ambiguity clearly through the life he lives and the true home life
that resulted from his

Limitations Of Public Education
Empowered or Limited When it comes to the topic of education, most of us will readily agree that
receiving an education is necessary and important to daily life. Where this agreement usually ends,
however, is on the question of limitations. Whereas some are convinced that public education limits it
students, others maintain that it empowers them. My own view is that public education limits students
because there is a lack of autonomy, a focus on segregation, and a very real pressure to succeed. The
standard way of thinking about education is to believe that it empowers students, however some argue
that it actually limits a student s individuality. In his essay Against School , John Gatto demonstrates
how the public educational system places limitations on its students. Gatto is an award winning
educator and has taught in public schools for almost twenty years. According to Gatto, We could
encourage the best qualities of youthfulness.... simply by being more flexible about time, text, and
tests....and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now
and then. But we don t do that. (Gatto p. 115). In other words, public education has the ability to
empower students, but because of the strict structure, focus on testing, and lack of autonomy, it is
more restricting than empowering. Many people assume that students going to an IVY league school
are the brightest of their peers when it comes to academics. When given an inside look at these
prestigious, best of the best institutions, we encounter something different than what we expect.
William Deresiewicz attended Columbia University and was a professor at Yale, and he sates, most of
them seemed content to color within the lines that their education has marked out for them. Very few
were passionate about ideas. (Deresiewicz p. 203). Deresiewicz s point is that IVY League students
aren t very willing to go beyond that which they have been taught in the classroom. What s the
purpose of separating these students from their peers, who may not be as gifted academically, if they
do not take their education beyond what they are formally taught. Segregation does not happen just at
the college level, but also at

The s Reading Process Theory Through The Text Of Mrs...
Yadav
Dr. Nidhi Vats
M.A. English (Final)
Decoding Wolfgang Iser‟s Reading Process Theory through the Text of Mrs Dalloway and
Bravely Fought the Queen In the 1960s, the new criticism theory in the American Literary arena
focused on the reading of a literary text as an independent form and not to be studied in relation to any
context. This gave birth to another theory that began majorly in 1960s and 1970s known as reader
response criticism, which also tried to do away with the author‟s role and focused on the reader‟s
perception that defined the text‟s subjectivity. In his work The Reading Process A
Phenomenological Approach , Wolfgang Iser describes about the reading of a literary work or text as
an interaction between the reader and the author. In order to understand a text in a better way and to
explore its meaning, Louise Rosenblatt in his work Literature as Exploration described how the
readers should be free from any preconceived notions about the proper way to react to any work
(Lewis,C.S.,1961) to experience any work or text individually. Similarly,
Iser also want the readers to make a niche for themselves while the aesthetic reading of a wok or a
text. Wolfgang Iser‟s reading in reference to two works, namely, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia
Woolf and Bravely Fought the Queen by Mahesh Dattani has been assessed in order to have a better
understanding and a practical approach in exploration or understanding the meaning of the texts. Mrs
Dalloway

Desert The Tortoises Analysis
In the article, Can Desert the Tortoise Be Saves, the author, Mackenzie Carro reports that baby
tortoises in the Mojave Desert are being killed and eaten by ravens, but this can be fixed. In the
Mohave Desert, ravens are killing and eating baby tortoises. The raven population has increased over
the past 50 years, as more people moved to the areas surrounding the desert, more trash accumulated,
which the ravens came to eat. Also, the amount of telephone wires and fences increased as the
population of that area grew, which also caused ravens to come, so they could nest on the telephone
wires and fences. The Desert Tortoise s population is now decreasing, and is in danger of being gone
forever. Nevertheless, conservationists like Tim Shield

Name: Tianhao Wang
Components:
Vacuum System:
#1: What is the difference between a gas transfer and a gas entrapment vacuum pump?
Answer: A Gas Transfer Vacuum Pump will move the molecules out of the system so that the vacuum
environment is formed. And an Entrapment Vacuum Pump will trap the molecules in some way, and
they can t move freely any longer so that the vacuum environment is formed.
#2: What are the two types of gas transfer pumps?
Answer: (1) Positive Displacement Pumps and (2) Kinetic Vacuum Pumps.
#3: Describe how any two types of vacuum pumps work.
Answer:
(1)The Positive Displacement Pump:
The Positive Displacement Pump exhausts a certain volume of gas successively to reduce the pressure
of a system and creates a partial vacuum. The schematic diagram is shown below. (Source: Basic
Vacuum Practice, 3rd Edition, Varian Vacuum Products.)
(2) Ion Getter Pump:
First, Gases are ionized which will be trapped to the cathode. Then the sputtered Ti atoms will cover
the gas ions trapped on the cathode. Thus, this chemisorption is completed. The schematic diagram is
shown in next page.

Boxing Is The Most Brutal Of Sports
Typically in sports the goal is to hit a homerun, score a goal, or even get a hole in one. However, there
is one sport that is not like any other, boxing. This sport is the most brutal of sports. The goal is to
knock out the opponent with devastating blows to the head. Boxing can be a very dangerous sport
resulting in extreme injury or death, and there is a lot of pressure to use illegal drugs in an effort to
win. Boxing also has many benefits, such as physical fitness, stress relieving, and allows an elite
professional boxer to earn a very good living. The earliest records of boxing occurred in the 2nd
millennium BC from Mesopotamian and Assyria nations (History of Boxing). Architects have found
carvings in ancient caves showing bare fisted contests with spectators (History of Boxing). Boxing
gained popularity and became an organized sport when accepted by the Greeks at the Olympic Games
in 688 BC (History of Boxing). Boxing continued to evolve from the 16th to 18th centuries in Great
Britain as a prize fighting game (History of Boxing). During this time, boxers fought with bare
knuckles and spiked shoes (History of Boxing). Early fighting had no written rules. There were no
weight divisions, or round limits, and no referee. The matches were extremely chaotic (History of
Boxing). Around 1867, the introduction of fair size gloves changed the nature of the bouts (History of
Boxing). Bouts became longer and more strategic with greater emphasis on strategy and

Dystopian Places In The Giver
The Giver
Simply, a dystopia is defined as a bad place, a place where no one would want to live, a place in which
one s rights and freedoms would be gone, a place where the environment would be devastated.
Dystopia is created from the Greek prefix dis meaning bad, harsh, or wrong and the Greek root topos
meaning place.
The Giver proves all of these characteristics true. Jonas and his community receive no freedom or
pain. Without pain, the world can not evolve because you can not learn from your mistakes. The
community is dehumanized, but because no one has felt happiness they shall not any what it should
feel like. In The Giver by Lois Lowry the setting is a dystopian based community because citizens live
in a dehumanized state, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jonas is sitting with his family at the dinner table when his sister says something very important. The
text states, I feel sorry for anyone who is in a place where he feels strange and stupid. (Lowry 6). This
quote is very important because it shows that even though she doesn t know it she is starting to realize
people aren t treated right. Jonas and his family have been brainwashed to think that this is how life
should be but they just can t figure it out. Shortly after Jonas had a discussion with his parents whether
they love him, his mom tells him why it is inappropriate to use the word Love . Jonas thinks for a
while then he says, Things could change, Gabe, Jonas went on. Things could be different. I don t know
how, but there must be some way for things to be different. There could be colors. And grandparents,
he added, staring through the dimness toward the ceiling of his sleeping room. And everybody would
have the memories. (Lowry 128). This quotes stood out a lot. Jonas finally realizes how bad people
are treated and he wants to change it for Gabriel. Foreshadowing the end of the book this is the
breaking point where Jonas wants to change life for Gabriel. Jonas realizes his community is far from
perfect. His whole life he believed this was the only way to live, but when he figured out that there
were other ways, he realized how dehumanized his community

Light And Dark Imagery Of London And Paris
The beginning of book one immediately starts out with dark and gory imagery of London
during the 18th century. A series of darkness and shadows continue along with a limited amount
of lightness where the sun rises into the bright sky. Light and darkness represent both good and
evil in the novel and these opposing forces reflect the moods during the French Revolution.
Furthermore, the use of light and dark imagery impacts the connotations associated with the
moral, philosophical and social issues, as well as ethics during this turbulent era.
The first line of A Tale of Two Cities is It was the best of times, it was the worst of
times... (3) this suggests a distinction of the two cities, London and Paris. London was known
for being the peaceful home of the main characters, however Paris was quite the opposite
because of the vicious French Revolution. Within this dark imagery, Dicken s gives the reader
some tender moments with the loving and harmonious Lucie Manette (147). Lucie is one
character that shows true morals with great lightness. Dickens portrays Lucie as being delightful
and extremely beautiful and she has a great talent for bringing out the best in everyone in the
novel that surrounds her. She is one of the characters in the novel that hasn t fully evolved, but
she still manages to have great morals. Despite the fact that Lucie is a flat character, she is still
quite important in the novel. The author portrays her as the golden

Dark Matter Essay
There is perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of
quot;dark matter quot;. The controversy, as the name implies, is centered on the notion that there may
exist an enormous amount of matter in the Universe that cannot be detected from the light that it
emits. The evidence of dark matter is from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar,
galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations.
The basic argument is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass
there for gravity to stop all the objects from flying apart. When such velocity measurements are done
on large scales, it turns out that the amount of inferred mass is much more than ... Show more content

The particles include photinos, neutrinos, gravitinos, axions, and magnetic monopoles, among many
others. Of these, researchers have detected only neutrinos and whether neutrinos have any mass
remains unknown. Experiments are under way to detect other exotic particles. If they exist, and if one
has a mass in the correct range, then that particle might pervade the universe and constitute dark
matter.
The MACHO Project is a collaboration between scientists at the Mt. Stromlo amp; Siding Spring
Observatories, the Center for Particle Astrophysics at the Santa Barbara, San Diego, amp; Berkeley
campuses of the University of California, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Their
primary aim is to test the hypothesis that a significant fraction of the dark matter in the halo of the
Milky Way is made up of objects like brown dwarfs or planets: these objects have come to be known
as MACHOs, for MAssive Compact Halo Objects. The signature of these objects is the occasional
amplification of the light from extragalactic stars by the gravitational lens effect. The amplification
can be large, but events are extremely rare: it is necessary to monitor photometrically several million
stars for a period of years in order to obtain a useful detection rate. For this purpose they must have
built a two channel system that employs eight CCDs, mounted on the 50 inch telescope at Mt.

Pollinators show no preference between Goldenrod Plants and Aster Plants regardless of differences in

Introduction
In this experiment, we observed the pollination of various plants by various pollinators in the
Binghamton University Nature Preserve. We collected data by observing various plants by the pond
trail area of the nature preserve and attempted to explain why some plants were structurally more
attractive to pollinators than other plants. While observing a variety of plants, it became clear that the
Goldenrod Plant and the Aster plant were the most attractive. This conclusion was drawn because they

The Chicory was pollinated by a total of 18 pollinators (8 Wasps, 2 Bumble Bees, 8 Honeybees). The
Knapweed was pollinated by a total of 8 pollinators (6 Bumble Bees, 2 Butterflies).
As discussed before, in order to study the structural attractiveness of a plant it needed to be considered
significant or have at least 30 points of pollinator data. The above bar graph displays the only two
observed plants that had 30 points of pollinator data over the course of the three days. The Goldenrod
plant had 35 points of data and the Aster plant had 42 points of data, making them both significant
enough to study further. Previous work by Koch classified both these plants as Composite Flowers
(1930). Given their similar internal structures, we would focus on a difference in flower length, an
external structure, to explain the differences in pollinator visitations. Previous work by Gross Werner
has shown the average flower length of Goldenrod plants to be ¾ of an inch (1983). Previous work by
Harder has shown the average flower length of Aster plants to be 2 inches (1985).

Differentiated Instruction Literature Review By Teri Daniel
Introduction What is Differentiated Instruction?
Students are different, just like people are different. There are many varied groups of students in one
classroom. Differentiated instruction is a process for teaching and learning for students of differing
abilities in the same class (Hall et al., 2011). The intent of differentiating instruction is to maximize
each student s growth, and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is, and
assisting in the learning process (Hall et al., 2011). Instruction is differentiated in classrooms through
content, process, products, and learning environment. Teachers must adapt curriculum and lesson

He rejected the idea that children are primarily motivated by rewards and punishments, rather,
children are motivated by what they are most interested in. Often misrepresented to be associated with
child centered education (1899.)
In 1968, Fred Keller introduced the Keller Plan, to help students in Brazil master content at their own
pace. Curriculum was short units of written texts that students moved thru at their own pace, and then
took a test. If they failed a test, they repeat coursework until they could demonstrate mastery. Students
in these PSI courses (Keller Plan) learn course content better, remember it longer, and like the
experience more than students in traditional classes, (Fox, 2004).
In 1978, Lev Vygotsky conducted research in child psychology in the 1920s, but his work did not
reach the USA until 1978. He states: Every function in the child s cultural development appears twice:
first, on the social level, and later, on the individual level; first, between people (interpsychological)
and then inside the child (intrapsychological). (Vygotsky, 1978). He thought curriculum should be
interactive, teachers should scaffold by students performance, and assessment range on zone of
proximal development. This zone is where kids learn and described as what children can do at their
actual development and what they can do with help is their level of potential

The University Where I Earn My Bachelor s, Through The...
I will be looking at the University where I earned my Bachelor s, through the Quinn Model.
I earned my BA at Marylhurst University which when I started its big selling point to their students
was a focus on non traditional students, small class sizes and advisor that work with small groups of
students.
From the student perspective it was very much Human Resources view and Internal process view. On
the more administrative side the president of the university was typically a person educated in
business while there was a diverse administration to keep the university in balance (Cawsey, Deszca,
Ingols 2016).
In my second year a president came along that was educated in education, they overhauled the
administration and the business side of the university suffered. The school lost that equilibrium.
Money was lost, departments were merged, some advisors were put in charge of larger groups of
students and class sizes were doubled. Both students and staff were not happy with the direction things
were heading in fact that s how people became aware of it. Tenured professors flat out told us that
things were changing and the school had to change its core model because for Because the president
had bungled things. The president was stepping down but it was going to take a while to get things
back to normal.
Insights:
1. There might be a tendency to focus on one area. In the case of Marylhurst the president and the new
administration were very focused on the students and education,

The Efficient Market Hypothesis (Emh) Has Been Subject
The efficient market hypothesis (EMH) has been subject to professional and academic debate and
analysis for many years, and refers to the theory proposing that stock prices show all information
regarding a firm s value. An efficient market is a market in which investors with the same information
and similar investment goals compete actively (Sewell, 2012). Many private investors and investors
aiming to make profits are involved with the stock market and often make low risk investments while
aiming for high rates of return. However, the efficient market hypothesis states that it is impossible to
consistently outperform the stock market as the market is able to quickly adjust to new information.
The Efficient Market Hypothesis also addresses ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The semi strong form of market efficiency argues that an individual should not be in a position to
benefit by utilizing public information. (Potocki and Swist, 2012). Market analysts and financial
economists should have the ability to understand the financial information and how it affects the stock
market prices.
The Validity of the Semi Strong Form of the Efficient Market Hypothesis
Many researchers have tested the validity of the semi strong form of the Efficient Market Hypothesis
through testing major announcement event such as dividend announcements and bonus issue
announcements. (Khan and Ikram, 2010), This is because the announcements may offer desirable
factors to the market which will influence stock prices. Observing the performance of mutual funds
and brokerage companies is the second aspect for evaluating the semi strong form of market efficiency
(Khan and Ikram,2010). This is because brokers and fund managers are believed to have access to non
public information that gives them an advantage when trading on the stock market.
Review of Previously Conducted Studies
A previous study on the validity of the semi strong form demonstrated that the live log market
consistently fails to perform (Raymond Peter, 1979), and the results concluded that the live log market
was flawed

A learning organization is one that is able to transform its culture and behaviors from an occurred

Organizations must reflect on the structure employees have to operate in and ensure it is conducive to

stepping out of our comfort zones for a learning organization to survive. This concept refers to
adaptive learning, which is necessary for the organization. However, adaptive learning is linked to
generative learning, learning that enriches our aptitude to create. Achieving a new culture and
environment involves understanding three kinds of stress discomfort, performance, and disjunctive.
Discomfort complexity and uncertainty of its environment, resource constraints and difficulty securing
finances, material, and workers. Performance expectations for success/failure related to experiences,
incentives, changes in preferences of leaders. Disjunctive violations of norms regarding need for
coordination and tolerance for conflict between and among individuals and subgroups (pg85). The
foundation for a learning organization requires transformation from both individuals and

Editing Time and Space in Movie Making
Citizen Kane (1941)
The manipulation of time and space in the film of citizen cane is different from that of Pulp Fiction in
that it considers formal elements of film technique such as Mise en scene where it essentially involves
a costume, setting and makeup staging and lighting (Belton, 46). The very important scene that
happens in front of the camera appears in the final shot of the film. The setting function of the film has
highlighted the key aspect of Kane s life compared to Pulp Fiction that is seen to intersect in many

This is because the editor has been able to create something in the movie that cannot be filmed by the
use of various techniques in order to show the change of time visibly. These techniques give the editor
a chance to give a different effect and be able to create something totally different to the film. The use
of technique shows people an object change or the environment of an object change of a certain period
of time such as a person acting in the film such as getting older or younger (Belton, 57).
The film of Pulp Fiction is a good example of manipulation of time and space. Quentin Tarantino
directed an iconic film that was filled with humor and violence as well as a nonlinear storyline. The art

pictures of self reflexity. The holdup stage dinner starts the film in where the technique of time and

for a reward. A modern bounty hunter do not kill the criminal, which is different from old western bail
enforcement agents of the 1800 s. The reason why I choose this career is because I currently work as a
process server at Legal Papers Inc. The roles of a process server and bounty hunter are different but in
some ways very similar. A bounty hunter s role within the criminal justice system is bring hiding or
runway criminals to justice. The court System relies on bounty hunters to stop criminals from fleeing

Valuing people based upon their different races, religions or lack thereof, sexual orientations, genders,
ages, height, weight, nationalities, political affiliations, and transgendered status, can definitely work
to a private investigation company s advantage. If the owner or hiring manager of a private detective
agency is a middle aged, white, conservative, Christian male, then he is likely to hire in other people
who are like he is. Of course, the same can hold true for females, those who are black, Hispanic, more
liberal, Muslim, Buddhist, female, and etc. Unfortunately, this happens all too often across all
backgrounds, countries, etc. This often unfairly excludes private investigators who are otherwise very
qualified candidates from the job

Computime
Question 1
Communication across Computime is lacking. According to Wolcott and Lippitz, Computime lacks
formal communication channels between Research and Development (R D) and business unit
engineers (2008). If the R D unit is unaware of how Computime s customers are innovating a product,
how can the department anticipate needs and make adjustments prior to unveiling a new product?
Communication needs addressed.
Chinese engineers tend to be less accustomed to sharing problems, offering ideas, and working in
teams (Wolcott Lippitz, 2008). This is a barrier for Computime, as Chinese engineers may not be able
to communicate effectively with the R D units. To improve communication channels, Computime can

Step 3 Check for organizational congruence With the opening of the new R D center in 2006, the
formal organization, culture, and people of Computime will need re aligned (Tushman O Reilly,
1997). This is necessary because they do not fit the new vision, since all were established when
Computine was a contract manufacturer (OEM), not a global leader of branded products.
Step 4 Develop solutions and take action
Possible changes to the formal structure at Computime could include new communication systems and
rewards. Possible changes to human resources could include new skills and expertise necessary for
branded products. As far as cultural changes, a shift from manufacturing to innovative is necessary for
all employees if Computime wants to become a leader of branded products (Wolcott Lippitz, 2008).
Step 5 Observe response and learn from the consequences
Organizational learning is about finding good enough solutions to important problems and making
error correcting adjustments to get better and better (Tushman O Reilly, 1997). The key for
Computime to becoming a global leader in branded products is to continually learn/make
improvements from their targeted actions taken in step four.
In summary, a congruence analysis will help Computime

Lives and Experiences of Law Enforcement Officers
The rookie/probationary period is tough for all involved. Both employer and employee are getting

Essentially, cystic fibrosis causes a lot of sticky mucus buildup in many organs, including the
pancreas, lungs, and other organs. One interesting fact about Cystic Fibrosis has to do with its
epidemiology, interestingly enough, the distribution and prevalence of cystic fibrosis does depend on
race; white people have a higher chance of being born with Cystic fibrosis, this is believed to be
because the emergence of cystic fibrosis began in the stone age in Europe (Daniel, Emanuela, Genel
Lucia, 2015). Since cystic fibrosis is a recessive autosomal disease, a person affected inherits two
mutated genes from each parent as opposed to a single gene. Cystic Fibrosis is caused specifically in
the CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator) gene , within this gene the most
common mutation is the deletion of phenylalanine at codon 508, this is the most common mutation
within the 1600 known possible mutations for cystic fibrosis (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). The ideal
path to diagnose cystic fibrosis is through measuring sweat electrolyte levels, doctors measure the
sweat levels and then check to see if the levels are abnormally high, as with Cystic fibrosis patients
there is a high concentration of chloride and sodium (Alton, Bush, Davies, 2007). After diagnosis, the

Negative Effects Of European Exploration
European exploration has been often remarked in history courses as a wonderful period in history;
leading to the discovery of the Americas and many sellable goods. However, when looking at the
effects on the indigenous peoples of the lands that were pillaged; it wasn t necessarily as wonderful as
once thought. European exploration has led to many positive discoveries and negative results.
Whether it was all good or all bad is up to interpretation of the reader so, in the spirit of choices here
are some positive and negative effects of European exploration. In 1488, Bartholomeu Dias led the
Portuguese exploration efforts by reaching the Cape of Good Hope. Then in 1498, Vasco da Gama was
able to sail all of the way to India via travel around the Cape of Good Hope and into the Indian Ocean.
Due to these voyages Europeans were able to obtain spices and other goods from this region. By
opening up trading routes from Europe to Asia the diet of the average citizen became richer; helping to
extend the life expectancy rate. In addition to trading opportunities opened up with these countries the
Europeans used these journeys to spread Christianity. Whether this is a positive or negative effect is

John Hay s Open Door Policy In China

administration in China and their territorial integrity. Both the US and Britain had worked under
principles that were similar for a long time before, but once they were put down on paper by John
Hay, the Open Door was put into place as the official US policy towards China for the first half of the
20th Century. The main concept behind the open door policy was originally formulated from

In the book this was a constant and consistent factor and an obvious hint as to what to expect further
along in the chapters which was a vicious tailspin out of control. Chapter 8 talked about a series of
communication break downs. LTC Tom Kunk, the commander of the 1 502nd infantry regiment, set
the standard of how the communication was going to exist within the platoons. The book talked about
how he would lose his temper at his soldiers regardless how minor the issue. You could leave your
weapon unattended or leave trash on the ground either way he would confront you in the most
unprofessional way about it. This made his whole leadership style completely ineffective. I personally
understand how much this can influence a soldier especially those who are still trying to figure out
their leadership styles. If this is the only leadership style you deal with on a regular bases after a while
it will start to become the standard for you. LTC Kunk being the commander of the regiment should
be demonstrating better discipline and restraint. Instead this makes him appear to have no self control.
He should have been setting the standard in a more positive way on communicating with members of
the platoons, and creating a more cohesive environment. There were many other leaders in the platoon
who made similar mistakes. This example doesn t just apply to this particular situation but can also
result the same in a family. If your mom and dad are constantly bickering and your always

  • 3. Durkheim and the Relevance of His Theories in Modern Society Treat social facts as things is an expression that epitomises the works of Emile Durkheim. This essay focuses on four main sociological concepts proposed by the functionalist Emile Durkheim; the division of labour; mechanical and organic solidarity; anomie and suicide, and examines their relevance in contemporary society. Along with Marx and Weber, Durkheim is considered one of the founding members of modern sociology. He is also credited with making sociology a science through his application of scientific and empirical research. Durkheim believed that sociology should be seen as a science separate from other sciences such as psychology, by studying social facts objectively as things. (Kiviston, 2011) Through his four major ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (McDonald, 2009) Organic solidarity arose as a result of the industrial revolution when society became more multifaceted and new ways of working emerged. This saw a decline in the collective conscience regarding shared morals and beliefs as society began to progress and expand. The division of labour that arises as a result of organic solidarity is complex and varied, resulting in people becoming more individualistic and yet also interdependent. Society s social bonds now centred around the fact that people were dependant on each other for the good and services required in their day to day lives. (McDonald, 2009) As organic solidarity is typical of complex, industrialised societies, Durkheim s theory is very applicable to modern life and the first world in particular. Individuality is a major feature of people living in the western world today e.g. the USA, UK, and Ireland. This is evident in our political and social thinking. Much emphasis is placed on personal rights and the belief that nothing is more important than us. (Hughes et al, 1995) Meanwhile we are not self sufficient; we rely heavily on the expertise of thousands globally to live our daily lives e.g. the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive etc. (Macionis and Plummer, 2005) A huge increase in individualism came about because of organic solidarity resulting in a breakdown of moral and ethical boundaries ... • 4. A Doll House 3 A main character, Torvald, in the play A Doll House, by Henrik Ibsen could be viewed as a morally ambiguous character. He displays the character traits of a morally ambiguous person. Torvald s personal consumption of appearances shows how he treats his wife and home and personal pride. Torvald s wife Nora is the center of several of the traits that classify him as a morally ambiguous character. Nora is more like a possession to Torvald than a soul mate or wife. She is like a doll to him, something that he can control and shape into what he wants. Nora is treated like a child and as if she can not function a second without him to be there to tell her what to do. Her dependency on him is extremely important to him because that is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this she makes the decision to leave and request him never to talk to her again. Torvald s life was based upon what he felt was right in society. HE cared so greatly what the world would think of him rather than the true thought of being a family. He could not determine what a real life was because he only lived his life upon other expectations. The play s character Torvald shows moral ambiguity clearly through the life he lives and the true home life that resulted from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Limitations Of Public Education Empowered or Limited When it comes to the topic of education, most of us will readily agree that receiving an education is necessary and important to daily life. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of limitations. Whereas some are convinced that public education limits it students, others maintain that it empowers them. My own view is that public education limits students because there is a lack of autonomy, a focus on segregation, and a very real pressure to succeed. The standard way of thinking about education is to believe that it empowers students, however some argue that it actually limits a student s individuality. In his essay Against School , John Gatto demonstrates how the public educational system places limitations on its students. Gatto is an award winning educator and has taught in public schools for almost twenty years. According to Gatto, We could encourage the best qualities of youthfulness.... simply by being more flexible about time, text, and tests....and by giving each student what autonomy he or she needs in order to take a risk every now and then. But we don t do that. (Gatto p. 115). In other words, public education has the ability to empower students, but because of the strict structure, focus on testing, and lack of autonomy, it is more restricting than empowering. Many people assume that students going to an IVY league school are the brightest of their peers when it comes to academics. When given an inside look at these prestigious, best of the best institutions, we encounter something different than what we expect. William Deresiewicz attended Columbia University and was a professor at Yale, and he sates, most of them seemed content to color within the lines that their education has marked out for them. Very few were passionate about ideas. (Deresiewicz p. 203). Deresiewicz s point is that IVY League students aren t very willing to go beyond that which they have been taught in the classroom. What s the purpose of separating these students from their peers, who may not be as gifted academically, if they do not take their education beyond what they are formally taught. Segregation does not happen just at the college level, but also at ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The s Reading Process Theory Through The Text Of Mrs... Yadav Dr. Nidhi Vats M.A. English (Final) Decoding Wolfgang Iser‟s Reading Process Theory through the Text of Mrs Dalloway and Bravely Fought the Queen In the 1960s, the new criticism theory in the American Literary arena focused on the reading of a literary text as an independent form and not to be studied in relation to any context. This gave birth to another theory that began majorly in 1960s and 1970s known as reader response criticism, which also tried to do away with the author‟s role and focused on the reader‟s perception that defined the text‟s subjectivity. In his work The Reading Process A Phenomenological Approach , Wolfgang Iser describes about the reading of a literary work or text as an interaction between the reader and the author. In order to understand a text in a better way and to explore its meaning, Louise Rosenblatt in his work Literature as Exploration described how the readers should be free from any preconceived notions about the proper way to react to any work (Lewis,C.S.,1961) to experience any work or text individually. Similarly, Iser also want the readers to make a niche for themselves while the aesthetic reading of a wok or a text. Wolfgang Iser‟s reading in reference to two works, namely, Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and Bravely Fought the Queen by Mahesh Dattani has been assessed in order to have a better understanding and a practical approach in exploration or understanding the meaning of the texts. • 7. Desert The Tortoises Analysis In the article, Can Desert the Tortoise Be Saves, the author, Mackenzie Carro reports that baby tortoises in the Mojave Desert are being killed and eaten by ravens, but this can be fixed. In the Mohave Desert, ravens are killing and eating baby tortoises. The raven population has increased over the past 50 years, as more people moved to the areas surrounding the desert, more trash accumulated, which the ravens came to eat. Also, the amount of telephone wires and fences increased as the population of that area grew, which also caused ravens to come, so they could nest on the telephone wires and fences. The Desert Tortoise s population is now decreasing, and is in danger of being gone forever. Nevertheless, conservationists like Tim Shield ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Boxing Is The Most Brutal Of Sports Typically in sports the goal is to hit a homerun, score a goal, or even get a hole in one. However, there is one sport that is not like any other, boxing. This sport is the most brutal of sports. The goal is to knock out the opponent with devastating blows to the head. Boxing can be a very dangerous sport resulting in extreme injury or death, and there is a lot of pressure to use illegal drugs in an effort to win. Boxing also has many benefits, such as physical fitness, stress relieving, and allows an elite professional boxer to earn a very good living. The earliest records of boxing occurred in the 2nd millennium BC from Mesopotamian and Assyria nations (History of Boxing). Architects have found carvings in ancient caves showing bare fisted contests with spectators (History of Boxing). Boxing gained popularity and became an organized sport when accepted by the Greeks at the Olympic Games in 688 BC (History of Boxing). Boxing continued to evolve from the 16th to 18th centuries in Great Britain as a prize fighting game (History of Boxing). During this time, boxers fought with bare knuckles and spiked shoes (History of Boxing). Early fighting had no written rules. There were no weight divisions, or round limits, and no referee. The matches were extremely chaotic (History of Boxing). Around 1867, the introduction of fair size gloves changed the nature of the bouts (History of Boxing). Bouts became longer and more strategic with greater emphasis on strategy and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Dystopian Places In The Giver The Giver Simply, a dystopia is defined as a bad place, a place where no one would want to live, a place in which one s rights and freedoms would be gone, a place where the environment would be devastated. Dystopia is created from the Greek prefix dis meaning bad, harsh, or wrong and the Greek root topos meaning place. The Giver proves all of these characteristics true. Jonas and his community receive no freedom or pain. Without pain, the world can not evolve because you can not learn from your mistakes. Jonas and his family have been brainwashed to think that this is how life should be but they just can t figure it out. Shortly after Jonas had a discussion with his parents whether they love him, his mom tells him why it is inappropriate to use the word Love . • 12. Light And Dark Imagery Of London And Paris The beginning of book one immediately starts out with dark and gory imagery of London during the 18th century. A series of darkness and shadows continue along with a limited amount of lightness where the sun rises into the bright sky. Light and darkness represent both good and evil in the novel and these opposing forces reflect the moods during the French Revolution. Furthermore, the use of light and dark imagery impacts the connotations associated with the moral, philosophical and social issues, as well as ethics during this turbulent era. The first line of A Tale of Two Cities is It was the best of times, it was the worst of times... (3) this suggests a distinction of the two cities, London and Paris. London was known for being the peaceful home of the main characters, however Paris was quite the opposite because of the vicious French Revolution. Within this dark imagery, Dicken s gives the reader some tender moments with the loving and harmonious Lucie Manette (147). Lucie is one character that shows true morals with great lightness. Dickens portrays Lucie as being delightful and extremely beautiful and she has a great talent for bringing out the best in everyone in the novel that surrounds her. • 13. Dark Matter Essay There is perhaps no current problem of greater importance to astrophysics and cosmology than that of quot;dark matter quot;. The controversy, as the name implies, is centered on the notion that there may exist an enormous amount of matter in the Universe that cannot be detected from the light that it emits. The evidence of dark matter is from the motions of astronomical objects, specifically stellar, galactic, and galaxy cluster/supercluster observations. The basic argument is that if we measure velocities in some region, then there has to be enough mass there for gravity to stop all the objects from flying apart. When such velocity measurements are done on large scales, it turns out that the amount of inferred mass is much more than ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of these, researchers have detected only neutrinos and whether neutrinos have any mass remains unknown. Experiments are under way to detect other exotic particles. Their primary aim is to test the hypothesis that a significant fraction of the dark matter in the halo of the Milky Way is made up of objects like brown dwarfs or planets: these objects have come to be known as MACHOs, for MAssive Compact Halo Objects. The signature of these objects is the occasional amplification of the light from extragalactic stars by the gravitational lens effect. The amplification can be large, but events are extremely rare: it is necessary to monitor photometrically several million stars for a period of years in order to obtain a useful detection rate. For this purpose they must have built a two channel system that employs eight CCDs, mounted on the 50 inch telescope at Mt. Stromlo. The high data rate (several GBytes per night) is ... Introduction In this experiment, we observed the pollination of various plants by various pollinators in the Binghamton University Nature Preserve. We collected data by observing various plants by the pond trail area of the nature preserve and attempted to explain why some plants were structurally more attractive to pollinators than other plants. The above bar graph displays the only two observed plants that had 30 points of pollinator data over the course of the three days. The Goldenrod plant had 35 points of data and the Aster plant had 42 points of data, making them both significant enough to study further. Previous work by Koch classified both these plants as Composite Flowers (1930). Given their similar internal structures, we would focus on a difference in flower length, an external structure, to explain the differences in pollinator visitations. Many private investors and investors aiming to make profits are involved with the stock market and often make low risk investments while aiming for high rates of return. The goal of the open door policy was to promote international commerce and trade in china and secure agreement on the subject, while at the same time respecting the administration in China and their territorial integrity. Both the US and Britain had worked under principles that were similar for a long time before, but once they were put down on paper by John Hay, the Open Door was put into place as the official US policy towards China for the first half of the 20th Century. The lessons we can take from these soldiers can help us as potential leaders to become more competent and effective. In the book this was a constant and consistent factor and an obvious hint as to what to expect further along in the chapters which was a vicious tailspin out of control. Chapter 8 talked about a series of communication break downs. LTC Tom Kunk, the commander of the 1 502nd infantry regiment, set the standard of how the communication was going to exist within the platoons. The book talked about how he would lose his temper at his soldiers regardless how minor the issue. You could leave your weapon unattended or leave trash on the ground either way he would confront you in the most unprofessional way about it. This made his whole leadership style completely ineffective. I personally understand how much this can influence a soldier especially those who are still trying to figure out their leadership styles. If this is the only leadership style you deal with on a regular bases after a while it will start to become the standard for you. LTC Kunk being the commander of the regiment should be demonstrating better discipline and restraint. Instead this makes him appear to have no self control. He should have been setting the standard in a more positive way on communicating with members of the platoons, and creating a more cohesive environment. There were many other leaders in the platoon who made similar mistakes. This example doesn t just apply to this particular situation but can also result the same in a family. If your mom and dad are constantly bickering and your always ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
