The popliteal fossa is a diamond-shaped depression behind the knee joint containing major neurovascular structures. It is bounded by muscles including the biceps femoris, semimembranosus, and gastrocnemius. The popliteal artery, vein, and tibial nerve pass through the fossa from proximal to distal, with the nerve being the most superficial. Branches of these structures include genicular arteries and nerves. The sciatic nerve terminates in the fossa, dividing into the tibial and common peroneal nerves.
