The Role Of Women In America
In July 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention, held by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, became
the first meeting to be held on behalf of women s rights. It was at this convention that the Declaration
of Sentiments was drafted, and modeled after the Declaration of Independence by asserting the
equality of men and women throughout the document. This was to show that men were not the only
one who had the right to equality, but also woman. At the time, not everyone, even women, believe in
the the idea of women being equal to men because in this century it was believe women were fragile
creatures who only live within the domestic and social sphere. Within the past few decades the role of
women in America changed dramatically; they have right to vote, to education, to work, etc. Yet
substantial inequalities remain between women and men.

Understanding Psychology And The Ways

Adulthood and Aging | PSY307 A01

Module 5 Assignment 1
In regards to cognitive psychology and the ways in which we define ourselves in terms of individuals,
is one of the biggest areas of interest. The area defines the process used in order to acquire, receive,
retain and store the information in which is received. During childhood our memory grows, and
through adulthood throughout until our middle age, where shortly after we begin to decline in
productivity. Initially, when a person grows and changes, their brain begins to change and their
cognitive functions worsen. One example being the way in which we appropriately word and express
things, begins to decline in fluency and accuracy. (American psychological association, 2006). Studies
have shown that the semantic and procedural memory declines the least, while that flashbulb memory
declines the most. The amount of large declination varies due to middle age sensitivity and the lack of
self efficiency. The memory initially declines based not on the lack of storage, but merely how they
retain and store that information which is being received. Naturally, this happens because the cortex
shrinks, leaving a serious lack of blood flow to the brain, and triggers that loss, which is naturally all
apart of the aging process. Some natural signs of normal age related memory loss can include the
occasional forgetfulness of where we placed something

Civilization Vs. Savagery In The Lord Of The Flies
Civilization versus Savagery
The Lord of the Flies is a classic novel written by William Golding in the year of 1954. The novel tells
the tale of a group of schoolboys who are miraculously marooned on a desert island after their plane
crashes. At first the boys attempt to govern themselves and to keep a grasp on civilization and order;
In the beginning the island was very much like their home, but eventually this ideology fades into
savagery and brutality. The boys resort to theft, torture and even murder. Although The Lord of the
Flies depicts many themes and morals, the underlying theme is the battle between the human impulse
towards civilization and savagery. This theme is brilliantly and respectively portrayed by battle of the
two characters; Jack and Ralph.
In the beginning there was only the main protagonist Ralph and Piggy, they soon realise that there is a
possibility that there may be other survivors and decide to call the others using a conch shell that
Ralph and Piggy had found earlier, Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon.
Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. [p8] The conch is blown by Ralph ( We can use this to
call the others [p9]) Children start to emerge from the bushes including a choir lead by a ginger boy
named Jack. Note that they only emerged from hearing the sound of the shell, there were no other
instructions, this immediately makes the conch a symbol of law and order. Once everyone is gathered
a meeting is called,

The Right to Bear Arms Essay
The Right to Bear Arms How many of us want the U.S. government to have the right to tell us what to
do, and when w can do it. There are probably not many who would agree that the government should
have that right. Though having gun control laws is not to that extreme, some would say it is the first
step. Growing up in a small town, and also growing up with guns my whole life I was one of those
people who did not want gun control laws. Then after reading two articles that discussed this topic I
found that I have been ignorant about this subject. I read the articles that discussed gun control by J.
Warren Cassidy and Nan Desuka. In the first article The Case for Firearms by J. Warren Cassidy, the
author argues that the right to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Desuka also argues that owning a handgun is not protected under the Second Amendment The Second
Amendment may be fairly paraphrased thus : Because an organized militia is necessary to the security
of the State, the people have the right to possess weapons. But the owners of handguns are not
members of a well regulated militia ( 424). In this essay the author is banning of some handguns. After
reading each article and analyzing them, I found the Desuka essay to be a better composed essay for
several reasons. The first reason the Desuka essay is more effective than Cassidy is, because Desuka
tends to be more of a believable authority than does Cassidy. Cassidy at the time of the essay was the
NRA S ( National Rifle Association ) executive vise president. The NRA is the biggest advocate for
the right to bear arms. In his essay, Cassidy seems to be more involved in trying to sell memberships
for the NRA than trying to show why there shouldn t be any gun control laws: There are better ways to
advance our society than to excuse criminal behavior. The NRA initiated the first hunter safety
program, which has trained millions of young hunters. We are the shooting sport s leading safety
organization, with more than 26,000 certified instructors training 750,000 students, and trainers last

Shakespeare and Plagiarism Essay
Shakespeare and Plagiarism William Shakespeare is one of the world s greatest playwrights; however,
some say that he does not fully deserve the credit for his work because he plagiarized the work of
others. Shakespeare, who was born in Stratford upon Avon in 1564, is also known as the Bard and has
written countless plays and poems which have given rise to several novels and movie plots (Chandy).
It is said that he found most of his inspiration from nature, as he mentions birds in his works more
than any other author (Mabillard). There is not enough evidence to prove that Shakespeare did not
plagiarize, nor is there enough to prove that he did. However, from what is known, he did nothing that
could get him the knowledge needed to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some people still like to argue the fact that Shakespeare was not wealthy had a lack of education and
would have had a difficult time writing such elaborate works without help (wheeler). There are several
people who are believed to be the real William Shakespeare including Sir Francis Bacon, the Earl of
Oxford, the Earl of Essex, Christopher Marlowe and Queen Elizabeth I herself (Mabillard). This is
mainly due to the fact that during the time of Shakespeare these were highly educated and popular
people. Also, there are some theories which state that Shakespeare is really just an out of town actor
who took the credit for countless works done by other authors and playwrights (did Shakespeare
actually write all his plays), and there is a record of him acting in front of Queen Elizabeth in 1594
(Chandy). The main reason that these people believed to be the real Shakespeare, is Shakespeare lacks
the background, education, and breeding in order to write such great plays and poems. William
Shakespeare could possibly just be a political cover up for a politician or a nobleman. A nobleman
could have written the plays but the plays were meant to be read as political commentary, with each
character corresponding on a one to one basis with real political figures

Frank Sinatra Francis Albert Sinatra born on December 12, 1915, in Hoboken, New Jersey later
became known as Frank Sinatra and one of the greatest entertainers of his generation. American
singers Bing Crosby and Billie Holiday, influenced Frank Sinatra. Sinatra then developed a signature

decline of big band instrumental jazz music, and helped establish an enthusiastic climate for popular
singers. One of the songs Frank Sinatra is most known for singing is the hit My Way.

(1958), Nice N Easy (1960), and Strangers in the Night (1966). In the 50 s, Sinatra was also one of the
first to approach albums as cohesive works, instead of collections of singles. His releases from moody
volumes like In The Wee Small Hours, and Only The Lonely to bouncing tunes like Swingin Session
and Come Fly With Me laid the foundation for concept albums. The natural swing feel and jazz style
phrasings of his singing, including his use of dynamics and delayed rhythms, have influenced
numerous musicians. Many songs recorded by him, such as All of Me (1952), Come Fly With Me
(1958), All The Way (1957), and I ve Got You Under My Skin (1956), are still widely performed. His
songs still remain to have the distinctive style when he performed them. During the 50s, his movie
career also took off. In 1953 he won an Academy Award for his non singing performance in From
Here to Eternity. He also won an Oscar award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1953 movie From

The Controversy Of Historiography
Historiography is the methodically of which history is written. There has been some controversy
regarding the way historians portray women over the years, mainly because women tend to be
unrepresented. Their importance is not stressed enough, historian devote little attention to class issues
that seriously affected black women. Even when history is focused on African American studies, there
is more of an emphasis on the black men, as opposed to black women. From the beginning, European
whites have created an image of woman has unworthy and undeserving. In a world where status is
heavily based on race and gender, woman already had two strikes against them: they are black and non
male. During the colonial days in The United States, only white

Analysis Of The Poem Porphyria s Lover By Alfred Lord...
Somebody s Instead of Somebody
Women were to be seen, but not heard. Women were expected to become wives and use their wombs
to create a family. Women were expected to obey their husbands and do as they were told. A women s
role in Victorian society was to raise the children and make sure the household was kept clean.
Women were obligated to fulfill these societal values because they lived in a world where the men
dominated the social hierarchy, and women were not free to express nor be themselves. In the poem,
Mariana , written by Alfred Lord Tennyson, a woman named Mariana is waiting all night for a man to
come proclaim his love for her. Mariana desperately needs this man to come to her rescue, so she can
fulfill her purpose in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Writers such as Tennyson and Browning explored the societal expectations placed on Victorian
women in their poems by describing them as powerless and weak woman who, in one way or another,
need a man. Having to rely on a man for survival was normal for Victorian woman. Women
understood that their destiny was to follow in the traditions of finding a husband and keeping him
happy and never having an opinion on anything. It is as if the woman was purposely meant to be
silenced and left to just be a small detail in terms of the big picture just to ensure the guarantee of the
official male power, a power that, deeming women unprincipled and emotional, advocated confining
them to the domestic sphere where their true self could be easily neutralized (Avarvarei 536). Men
created the idea of women being these fragile human beings who aren t smart enough to make their
own decisions and needing a man to make them happy. Men needed to convince themselves that
women were not capable of caring for themselves nor making their own decisions because men need
to feel needed. A man s ego is not satisfied unless a damsel in distress needs him to save her and
become this huge hero that she will forever have to repay for essentially saving her life. Tennyson sets
the tone of Mariana by describing the setting in a way that makes it sound ugly, sad and

How Did The Stock Market Crash That Led Up To The Great...
People began buying things such as cars and appliances on credit. Many people earned less money
than needed to live a comfortable lifestyle. Businesses were letting people with lower incomes buy
things on credit. Unfortunately the stocks rose faster than the value of the companies they represented.
When the stock market collapsed, these people did not have the money to pay back what they owed.
This resulted in financial ruin. Before the stock market crash investors traded about sixteen million
shares on the New York stock exchange each day. After Black Tuesday , billions of dollars were lost
wiping out thousands of investors. Had most of those investors sold their stock the day before the
crash, they would have received a large profit. The 1929 crash uncovered another problem in the
United States. The nations banking system was in trouble. In the 1920 s thousands of new banks were
opened, however, most lacked adequate money in reserves. Between 1923 and 1929, banks across the
country failed daily, but the general rising prosperity hid these failures. The crash made a bad situation
even worse, and banks failed at a more rapid rate.

Code Talker Character Analysis
Have you ever thought having a secret language or code was cool? Growing up did you ever create
words that only you and your friends knew? During WWII the Navajo people used their language to
create a secret unbreakable code. The book Code Talker, written by Joseph Bruchac looks at the life of
Ned and how Ned and his friends survived war and boarding school. Ned faced a number of
traumatising experiences such as boarding school and World War, which can both cause PTSD and
insanity, for a kid to go to war at 17 right after being taught he was inferior to whites is unimaginable.
Ned survived the horrors of boarding school and war because of key friendships specifically his
friendships with Hosteen Mitchell ,Smitty ,and Tommy Nez. The first of three friends Tommy Nez
was with Ned at boarding school. Boarding schools were different from today. They were in a place
where the U.S. Government attempted to kill off an entire way of life. Boarding schools taught
American Indians that they were inferior to whites and were savages. Tommy Nez is Ned s first friend

Assessment Of Stream Health At Conley Run Through The...
Assessment of Stream Health at Conley Run Through the Sampling of Benthic Macroinvertebrates
C.J. Laurin, C.J. Hess, M.C. Taddeo
Introduction
Located near Cowan, Pennsylvania, Conley Run is a tributary of Buffalo Creek that has experienced
severe degradation due to agricultural activity. Specifically, the deposition of large amounts of animal
wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers has resulted in significant eutrophication throughout the stream.
Furthermore, bank degradation associated with the movement of livestock has caused the
displacement of foreign sediments into stream habitats. These factors, among many others, have
caused the lake to be considered impaired by PA DEP. In response, the Buffalo Creek Watershed
Alliance, the the Union County Conservation District, and the Department of Environmental
Protection and Fish and Boat Commision have partnered in an effort to restore stream habitat and
create a riparian buffer to protect the stream.
A separate tributary of Buffalo Creek, known as Stony Run, lies upstream from Conley Run. Since it
is located in a dense wooded area with little to no agricultural interference, Stony Run has experienced
very little degradation in comparison to Conley Run. However, Stony Run also shares a number of
similar physical characteristics with Conley Run, such as discharge, watershed area, elevation and
slope. Therefore, it will serve as a reference stream for this study.
The objective of this study was to assess the stream habitat quality

Susan Wolf s Article Moral Saints And John Stuart...
Both Susan Wolf s article Moral Saints and John Stuart Mill s book Utilitarianism will be discussed
here. These works offer expositions of and opinions on the philosophical issue of the moral worth of
adhering to a certain set of values, and how a person s motivations for doing so can change their worth
and the desirability of their way of life. Wolf offers the position that leading an extremely morally
good life is undesirable, while Mill s opposing position is that if morality leads to happiness, then that
behavior is preferable. To determine which of these stances on the value of morality has the most
pertinence, these two arguments will be outlined and consequently analyzed. Their differences and
similarities will be enumerated and described, and consequently their merit will be discussed. Finally,
Wolf s moral theory will be proven to be inferior to Mills s, due to its prejudice, lack of supportive
evidence, and its inability to be universally applicable.
In Moral Saints , Susan Wolf defines a moral saint as an individual who is as morally good as it is
possible to be. Wolf suggests that there are two types of moral saints, utilitarian and Kantian (Wolf
420). A utilitarian saint is a Loving Saint , one who simply finds their own happiness in the happiness
of others and performs moral actions for their own sake (Wolf 420). A Kantian saint is a Rational Saint
, who is inherently different from a utilitarian/loving saint in the sense that they do not necessarily

Billy Budd Analysis
Billy Budd is the story of the sailor Billy Budd and his time on the H.M.S Bellipotent during the last
decade of the 18th century, after being impressed from the previous ship he was on The Rights of Man
. He was seen as a handsome sailor , and was loved by his old crew. He was also innocent to a fault.
This man could not see the bad or suspicious in someone at all. In the context of this novel, he was the
purest good in this ship, which could also be seen as a microcosm of the world as it was. Billy as a
whole is seen mainly as a man without fault. He could do no wrong in his world, because he is the
personification of all that is good. This makes his one flaw, that being his stutter, the perfect aspect of
his being to show us of the dangers of innocence. The fact that he cannot bring words out to defend
himself against the malice tossed at him because his very being will not allow him to even
comprehend that there are people in the world with such ill intent. Ill intent does not exist to him, and
it ultimately proved to be his undoing. As if almost a flip of a coin, Claggart can be seen as the
complete opposite than that of Billy. An ugly man, in both the figurative and literal sense, Claggart s
innate malice is without cause or limit. While Billy lacks the awareness of the differences of human
actions and the intentions behind them, Claggart knows these differences all too well. He has a great

The Decision Between Quantitative And Qualitative Data
One of the most important parts of establishing a research design involves the decision between
quantitative and qualitative data. Each has its own strength and weaknesses that any successful
research design must account for. Perhaps one of the easiest distinctions between the two rests in the
sample size. While quantitative data normally involves a large n, or sample size, qualitative data
involves a much smaller sample size in comparison. This smaller sample size allows qualitative
researchers to focus more on each case, increasing the internal validity of the research, but limiting its
external validity. Quantitative based research designs reverse this. The large sample size of
quantitative data often makes it difficult for researches to establish causation among the independent
and dependent variable(s). The external validly of such designs usually offsets this issue to some
extent. Due to their large nature, and use of numerical data, quantitative research is much more
replicable when compared to their qualitative counterparts. Unfortunately, the struggle between
internal and external validity is a fundamental part of research. Even efforts to combine the two
methods to form a mixed methods research design ultimately fail to nullify the issue completely.

The Characteristics Of Cora As A Femme Fatale
1. My definition of a good feminist is someone who fights equality between genders in society
(entertainment, the workforce, socially, and etc.). I believe the femme fatale character does celebrate a
women s agency by placing women into less traditional roles. Before this type of character became
popular, women in movies were portrayed as being feeble and not significant to the plot. Thus, the
introduction of the fatal women archetype offered women the opportunity to prove that they can be
more than a damsel in distress who needs to be saved by the male hero. This archetype allowed
women to be portrayed somewhat equally to men in movies. Women were allowed to be dangerous,
cunning, intelligent, and in control of the situation. Thus, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In the first, plot (bath tub drowning) if it went successfully Frank would have been the primary
suspect as the police officer spotted him at the scene shortly before the attempted murder. Also, the
fake car crash complicated Frank s life even more because he was now the one responsible for killing
Nick with the wrench.
Third, in chapter 5 Cora decided to go back to her husband after traveling a quarter of a mile out of
town with Frank. I believe that Cora decided that Frank was no longer useful in helping her achieve
her goal of independence (Cain, 1992, pg. 42).
Lastly, Cora turned on Frank when she wrote a full confession in an attempt to save herself from
prosecution. This is representative of a femme fatale because they always try to pin the crime on
someone else while getting away scot free.
3. Just like Cora, Matty Walker from the film Body Heat (1981) is an attractive femme fatale
character. Both use their seductive powers to trap unsuspecting men in their murderous plots. In both
cases the men think they are in control, but the audience could not disagree more. Also, both
characters use emotion to convince men to go along with the murders. They, make the men feel sorry
for them and their situation using emotion and character assassination (my husband is a bad guy).

Becoming Mexican American Essay
Becoming Mexican American George J. Sanchez Becoming Mexican American is George J. Sanchez s
document how Chicanos survived as a community in Los Angeles during the first part of the twentieth
century. He goes into detail of how many thousands of Mexicans were pushed back in to Mexico
during a formal repatriation. Those that survived in Los Angeles joined labor unions and became
involved in New Deal politics. The experience of Mexican Americans in the United States is both
similar, yet different from other minority groups. They were treated much like the Irish American and
other newcomers of the ninetieth century. Mexican Americans also like the Irish, soon made

The Devil in the Shape of a Woman by Carol Karlsen
Carol Karlsen was born in 1940. She is currently a professor in the history department a the University
of Michigan. A graduate of Yale University (Ph.D, 1980), she has taught history and women s study
courses at Union College and Bard College.
In this book Carol Karlsen reveals the social construction of witchcraft in 17th century New England,
and brings forth the portrait of gender in the New England Society.
The books thesis is based on why a person was accused of being a witch and the relative
circumstances thereof. Marital status, sex, community standing, wealth, and relationships with others
all play an important part of a person chances of being accused of being a witch. ... Show more

Even though these laws were written to be fair to all, the magistrates and clergy delegated punishment
by who was being punished. This type of reasoning was typical in New England, and set the stage for
the witch trials.
The content of The Devil in the Shape of a Woman is broken down into sections, by time and place.
There are several charts in the book showing the relationship of gender, age, wealth and place on how
an accused witch was treated. Most show that women were targeted at a greater extent than anybody.
Most observers now agree that witches in the villages and towns of the late Sixteenth and Seventeenth
Century New England tended to be poor. They were usually not the poorest women in the community,
but the moderately poor. Karlsen tries to show that a woman who was vulnerable was most likely to be
accused of being a witch. Even women who had gained wealth because of the death of a husband were
prime candidates.
Promiscuity was also known to be a reason for being accused accused of witchery. Marital problems
often led to a disgruntled husband screaming witch. A woman who could not conceive a child, or one
who would not give into her husband s wishes could easily be accused.
Karlsen touches on the events leading up to the witch trials of Salem in almost every chapter. The
events which led to the witch trial actually occurred in what is

The Ineffectiveness of Education Reform Essay
On January 8, 2002 President Bush signed into law the Leave No Child Behind Act, which
significantly changes how public schools receive federal funding. This bipartisan supported attempt at
reform, the first of this magnitude since the Elementary Secondary Education Act of 1965, shows a
dedicated concern to improving education. However, it is not plausible a punishment/rewards system
will positively improve schools on a large scale as a nationwide policy should.
President Bush s apparent prioritizing of schools is the positive stance for the federal government to
take on this issue, especially at a time when domestic concerns could be overshadowed by global
tensions and war activities. At first glance, one may be reassured by the ... Show more content on

This education policy was conceived at a time of prosperity, so whether the government continues to
increase spending remains to be seen.
The new legislation focuses on a pertinent aspect of education, raising standards for students, but
determining funding by test scores does not guarantee widespread results. This new policy relies on
the threat tactic of schools improving for fear of federal funding being reduced; if a school does not
meet the new standards, how will reducing funding improve it? The government will continue funding
school districts which are already capable of invoking sufficient test scores, while cutting back
funding to the districts which can not, offering the alternative of government funded transportation to
another school. This is the legislation s flaw: it should be teachers taking proficiency tests periodically
to display their qualifications in order to remain teaching. Most teachers are dedicated to their own
education, and so would not likely oppose such a policy. Instead we have the federal government
holding funding with the justification of accountability over school districts, demanding improved test
scores.
This criticism is rooted in both skepticism towards the policy s effectiveness, and confidence in an
alternative potential solution: the government could radically change the profession of
teaching/education by establishing a national base salary which would consequently mean an overall
raise in

Comparing Enkidu And Gilgamesh
The Importance of Enkidu and Gilgamesh to One Another By creating an alluring character plot of
both Enkidu and Gilgamesh, the development of the characters must be projected throughout the story,

Giselle And The Romantic Era
The romantic era had begun in the early 19th century and was the most innovative era for the ballet.
Known for the reflection of art and literature, the romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism and
supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the introduction
of pointe work, the iconic romantic tutu and themes of a love that could never be. On a softly lit stage
lights flickered over ghostly forms.
Throughout the romantic era many innovative features were introduced such as gas lighting, trap
doors and fly wires. Gas lighting was used as the transition light from sunshine to moonlight for the
ballet acts. Gas lighting created a mood to tell the story of a love that was destined to fail, especially in
Giselle. The dark light of the second act filtered across the willis as they haunted the graveyard. Trap
doors and fly wires were innovative as it gave the effect of the ballerina s disappearing and flying
through the air delicately.
The ballet Giselle is a romantic ballet based on a forbidden love between a royal and a commoner.
Giselle is a young girl who has a weak heart and falls deeply in love with a royal named Albercht.
Giselle has a strong passion for dancing however, her heart limits her from doing what she loves.
Later in the ballet she finds out that the man she loves dearly is engaged with another woman.
In the romantic era the costuming had a large impact on performances. The costumes complimented
the ballerinas.

The Pollution Of Air Pollution
Most people never stop to think about the sanitation of the air around them. The only places that
people ruminate over air quality are largely populated states and cities. One of these places is
California. Ominous clouds of smog and polluted air constantly hover over the citizens. These people
don t ever look up and worry, because smog is a usual appearance. This issue destroys not only the
earth and its atmosphere, but the very center of our lives: our bodies health. Particulate pollutants are
like the retroviruses of the world: well rounded and dangerous. Air pollution is the largest ecological
issue of our time because the contaminated air lingers all over the world constantly being augmented
to, and further threatening the world and those who lives in it. As a state that is car centric, California
has been harassed by air pollution for decades. Even one of California s most famous cities, Los
Angeles, is known for the cloud of smog. National Geographic even comments on the daily emissions
from factories and automobiles in the city saying, In the past 150 years, such activities have pumped
enough carbon dioxide into the atmosphere to raise its levels higher than they have been for hundreds
of thousands of years. ( Air Pollution Facts, Air Pollution Effects, Air Pollution Solutions, Air
Pollution Causes National Geographic. ) California s air pollution levels are at an all time high and
needs to be redressed. Ozone is one of the most dangerous main types of air

Aristotle s Theory of Virtue and Happiness
Aristotle was one of the most respected philosophers of all time. He wrote on many subjects covering
a wide range of topics; politics, psychology, metaphysics, logic and ethics. In the article Nature of
Virtue written by Aristotle, his theory of a persons happiness and good morals is explained. I agree
that a human s goal in life is to be happy, and to live a good life but happiness and good do not come
hand in hand. In this paper, I disagree with Aristotle s proper function argument.
The word happiness is a much broader term to Aristotle than what we think of. (Johnston, Para. F) By
happiness he means successful, living a good life and physical well being. A fully happy life would ...

You must be taught to be good in order to be good. According to Aristotle, your characteristics come
from your actions; in other words, you become good by doing good (Cahn 113). Under Aristotle s
theory, to be a good person, you must have been taught to be good at a young age to acquire good
morals. In order to profit from the sort of study he is undertaking, one must already have been brought
up in good habits ( Traditional Virtues and The Skeptic .) This means the group of people with
potential to have virtue and happiness is limited. It is limited to the people who come from a family
with good ethics. The only people who are going to become good, are the people who are already well
on their way to be good because their family is training them to be this way. But what about the people
who come from bad families? Or what about the people who were raised by ethically good families?
For example, a child who was brought up by parents who had no ethics or good morals at all. The
mother was a drug addict, and the father ran away while the child was at an early age. The child wasn
t taught anything about morals, and did not have a proper upbringing what so ever. Everything the
child knew was learnt on his own, and he decided who he wanted to be an acted in relation to this.
This child ends up being a good person, has a good job, and lives in happiness. When Aristotle makes

for recreational, and even spiritual and religious use. Some drugs can be a great thing, like the ones

cure the disease. Drugs that can have a detrimental effect on a person s health or welfare are
considered a controlled substance. This means that these drugs are regulated by the state and federal

By doing this the governments created the prohibition laws. Based on wikipedia the prohibition of
drugs through sumptuary legislation (laws that attempted to regulate consumption) and religious laws
(ethical and moral codes taught by religious traditions) is a common means of attempting to prevent
the recreational use of certain recreational drugs and other intoxicating substances. Activities that
governments looked at as undesirable were put into prohibition. Theses included smoking, drinking,
gambling, drugs, and prostitution. These prohibitions led to criminal underworlds battling against
police states, in which the public never benefited from. During the prohibition of alcohol in the years
of 1920 1933 even though the consumption and the sale of alcohol was illegal it was still being made,
but the quality of the liquor was not that good and people ended up with methanol poisoning which
led to blindness and even death. There was also a story of how the U.S. government poisoned alcohols
intended for industrial use killing an estimate of 10,000 people. The global war on drugs endorsed by
the United Nations is 55 years old. Early anti narcotic laws emerged in the 19th century to control the
trade in opium and later more drugs that people used and abused as a medicine or for recreational use.

Two specific advertising methods used are called Performance advertising and Brand advertising.
Performance advertising delivers relevant, text based, advertisements that users click on in order to
directly engage with the advertiser. This is done though an auction based advertising program called
AdWord. Through this method clients (the advertisers) pay Google in a cost per click base. In other
words, it recognizes revenue every time, and only if, a Google user clicks on a client s advertisement.
On the other hand Brand advertising uses videos, text images etc. which runs through different devices
and reaches specific audiences. With this method, which seeks to promote brand recognition, revenues
are recognized through cost per impression basis. The cost per impression approach means that the
client is billed based on the number of times their ads display on Google websites and Network

Socrates is put to trial by three accusers Meletus, Anytus, and Lycon. They claim that Socrates is an
evildoer, that he is corrupting the youth of Athens, and that he is promoting atheism. In The Apology
Socrates is not truly apologizing for his actions, rather he is defending himself and his actions.
At the beginning of Socrates trial he merely states that he has no experience with the courts and he

Abstract Many multiprocessor chips and computer systems today have hardware that supports shared
memory. This is because shared memory multicore chips are considered a cost effective way of
providing increased and improved computing speed and power since they utilize economically
interconnected low cost microprocessors. Shared memory multiprocessors utilize cache to reduce
memory access latency and significantly reduce bandwidth needs for the global interconnect and local
memory module. However, a problem still exists in these systems: cache coherence problem
introduced by local caching of data, which leads to reduced processor execution speeds. The problem
of cache coherence in hardware is reduced in today s microprocessors through the implementation of
various cache coherence protocols. This article reviews literature on cache coherence with particular
attention to cache coherence problem, and the protocols both hardware and software that have been
proposed to solve it. Most importantly, it identifies a specific problem associated with cache
coherence and proposes a novel solution.

Changes in Customary Land Administration and Building Synergy in Pluralistic Institutional
Environment in Sub Sahara Africa: Examining the Impact of the Land Administration Projects (LAP)
in Ghana
Research Background and Problem
Plurality of institutions is a unique feature of the land administration system in Africa. This system is
characterized by the operations of traditional landholding institutions that have been in existence and
has been holding land time immemorial on ground of ancestry together with statutory established
formal land agencies that is required to complement efforts of the former. Traditional institutions in
some countries continue to play key role in the system, despite widespread implementation of the
formalization ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is argued that multiple institutional and legal structures could bring about contradictions and
insecurity regarding whose rights count, whose rights will be supported in the event of a contest, and
which decision making structures are paramount resulting in institution shopping (Toulmin, 2009). In
Ghana, the pluralism systems are poorly articulated and has been the cause of growing contradiction
and conflict (Kasanga and Kotey, 2001). This can be substantiated by studies from Yeboah and Shaw
(2011) that find the traditional institutions are making makeshift plans in order to sell lands even
without the knowledge of the appropriate planning authority. Also, Biitir and Nara (2016) finds that
land governance in Ghana is hampered by lack of cooperation and collaboration between these
institutions. The state of the pure distinct operations of the customary and statutory land tenure
institutions therefore denies synergistic effect (Cousin and Hornby, 2005).
In the wake of the aforementioned factors and address resulting problems, previous and present
governments of Ghana have made attempts to streamline the system through land policies and
projects. The Land Administration Projects (LAP) is currently being implemented (Government of
Ghana, 2008). This

Essay Laws against the Paparazzi Frenzy
Imagine yourself rich and famous, living the modern American Dream. Now, imagine constantly
being stalked by a herd of random strangers bombarding you with cameras. Over the years, the
paparazzi have sought scandals from celebrities in order to receive money. In the process, they have
stripped thousands of celebrities from their privacy rights. According to the 2006 blog, The Digital
Paparazzi , there have been 1,360 different events between the years of 1999 and 2010 involving the
intrusive photographers (Sim and Adcock, n.p.). They have caused numerous headaches, injuries, and
even deaths. The abuse from paparazzi has gotten extreme to the point where the Congress has created
a set of laws, restricting them from certain exploits.

The other bill clarified a stronger interpretation of stalking. They were created to eliminate
surveillance that is viewed as a threat. Arguing that the bills go way too far to prohibit lots of conduct
that is legitimate news gathering, Assemblyman Donald Wagner opposes against the legislation.
Viewing the bills as a threat to the First Amendment, Wagner and other Republican lawmakers voted
against them (Pedroncelli, n.p.). Many people do outrageous things to successfully get a job
accomplished, but majority of the paparazzi use unethical tactics. To get a valuable picture of a
celebrity, paparazzi often create unnecessary chaos. For instance, a paparazzo purposely put himself in
front of Lindsay Lohan s moving vehicle in order to get a dramatic story from it. Needless to say,
about 41% of the paparazzi make up a story to go along with the photo. During desperate measures,
another paparazzo has set off the fire alarm to get their target to exit a building. Paparazzi even fight
each other to get the most valuable picture. As long as the most profitable picture is captured,
paparazzi care less about who gets hurt in the process, whether it is a pedestrian and/or the celebrities
themselves. Risking their own safety, paparazzi will even climb buildings or stow away in trees. The
most popular incident in this case was Jennifer Aniston s topless picture taken by a paparazzo

Let the Right One in Analysis Essay
BONDING THROUGH EXILE:
An Analysis of Mise en Scène in Let the Right One In
The theme of loneliness and isolation has been predominant in cinema since its inception, but Tomas
Alfredson explores the idea in a unique way in his 2008 Swedish romantic horror film, Let the Right
One In. Set in the snowy winter of Stockholm, the film depicts the similarly cold and depressing life
of Oskar, a young target of bullying. This frozen, barren setting contributes to the complete isolation
that the viewer feels with the characters. Through strategic shot composition and specific color and
mood choices, Alfredson shows how both Oskar and Eli are cut off from the world in different ways,
and then how their common bloodlust brings them together. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The camera slowly pans around the playground, showing the bland walls of the apartment complex
surrounding it to amplify their sense of overwhelming loneliness. Oskar, wanting to find a companion
in Eli, provides her with his rubik s cube to solve. The rubik s cube can also be seen as Eli providing
an answer to Oskar s problems. Both his life and his rubik s cube are puzzles that need solving, and
Eli literally drops in to solve everything for him. This early scene sets the tone for the rest of the
movie and establishes both the characters as lonely outcasts that need to be saved.
As the relationship between Oskar and Eli continues to blossom, Oskar finds out that Eli lives off
blood to survive. After this realization, there is a scene where Eli arrives at Oskar s house. Oskar
attempts to let her in by motioning and gesturing but she refuses to cross the threshold. She finally
enters without his permission, causing her to bleed from every opening on her face, turning her into a
grotesque image of her true vampiric form. This causes Oskar to give her permission to enter. This
scene symbolizes the finality of the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Eli is a violent murderer, and
Oskar has violent ambitions, and this is the moment where Eli attempts to turn those ambitions into
reality. The way the shots of Oskar and Eli are composed suggest a

occur in society. Miller best known plays are The Crucible , Death of a Salesman , All of my Sons ,
and The View from the Bridge . He was once married to the sex icon Marilyn Monroe which gave him
a temporarily Hollywood spotlight for his work and personal relationship. Sadly, Miller died in 2005
at the age 89 due to heart failure. Although his plays are memorable and recreated in today history.
Miller s theater work has been strongly influenced by a particular life experience that motivated him
to become this influential playwright and novelists. He was born and raised in New York City in 1915.

Toward a New World Order
Toward A New World Order
In 1988 the world begun to see the start of the most drastic change in geo politics since the end of the
Second World War. New policies set in place by Premier Gorbachev had intended to jump start the
failing Soviet economy, instead they solidified the dissolution of the Soviet Union. By 1986,
Perestroika and Glasnost had led to the liberalization of the USSR economies and politics as never
before seen in history. In 1988, the Communist party lost elections and governmental control in
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belorussia, Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia. The
revolutions started in Poland in 1989 and spread to Hungary, East Germany, Bulgaria,
Czechoslovakia, and Romania declaring independence from the Soviet Union. Moscow did not
interfere with any of these uprisings within the eastern bloc.
On September 11, 1990, President Bush addressed a joint session of Congress regarding the Iraqi
invasion of Kuwait, and he discussed an historic period of cooperation, which he called the New
World Order. Bush claimed this new order would be: Freer from the threat of terror, stronger in the
pursuit of justice, and more secure in the quest for peace. An era in which nations of the world, East
and West, North and South, can prosper and live in harmony . Again, on January 16, 1991, in an
address to the nation prior to the start of the Gulf War, President Bush used the term in explaining the
motivations and justifications for using

Chantrea Conway Characters
Elements of Novel
The protagonist of the story is Chantrea Conway.
The kind of person the protagonist is brave and reliable.
The evidence that leads to that Chantrea is brave and reliable is that she can keep a promise like when
she hid in the magic box, so the Khmer Rouge Soldiers wouldn t kill her for being American because
she promised her grandparents to not scream or leave the box even if the Khmer Rouge Soldier would
drag them out.
The conflict that Chantrea encounters is that Chantrea is trying to reach her father s family, but she can
t because of the Khmer Rouge Soldiers and Angkar won t let her come to America.
The conflict is resolved by the Angkar and Khmer Rouge Soldiers saying call family and leave or they

She hugged herself tightly and watched them with wide eyes. If the soldiers up there looked down into
the thick tangle of roots , he would see the light colored rag of her T shirt. Rain had formed a small
creek at the base of the tree, and the murky water was up to Chantrea s waist. Her torn jeans did little
to protect her and she felt something long and slimy brush by her thin legs. Her heart began to pound
and her stomach twisted. She was terrified that if the creature bit her, she would scream and alert the
soldier. To her relief, the unseen animal went on its way, just as the snake had done. Perhaps it only
saw her as another root of the tree. The characters and dialogue are believable. Strong The plot
engages my interest. Fair This novel is written in a style that is clear and interesting. Strong The
details in this novel add to its appeal. Strong Overall, I rate this novel as: Strong The reason for my
rating is that it has a strong touch on parts of the book and sometimes you can feel the book come

Social Relationships In Silas Marner
Le Khuc Hoang Uyen 1AH Topic: Discuss the presentation of social relationships in Silas Marner. In
George Eliot s Silas Marner , there was a clearer organization of the social hierarchy, with people in
different classes not frequently interact with each other and much less restrained social mobility in the
hierarchy. Generally, social relationships in Silas Marner are relatively dynamic, yet heavily
influenced by social status and geographical boundaries. In Silas Marner , social relationships are
class based; the wealthy people are rarely in contact with those who are poorer and lower in social
status, although the dividing boundaries between the different classes are not totally impermeable.
This is evident in the secretion between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Silas Marner , people tend to live in secluded communities and rarely have any contact with people
living in different areas, which illustrates how relationships are conventionally formed based on
similarities in term of daily routine, living areas, tradition and customs. This is demonstrated in how
Silas Marner is ostracized from the rest of the community in Raveloe at first, for he comes from a land
that is not commonly known by the other villagers, as the world outside their own direct experience
was a region of vagueness and mystery . The fact that they feel almost threatened by the uncertainties
and how they quickly the relevance of the existence of any other place but their own illustrates a sense
of utter security they feel towards their land, which again suggests how they must have been clinging
to the place and will be more accepting towards their fellow villagers than those coming from faraway
lands. The exclusiveness is further highlighted by the location of Raveloe, which is a village nestled in
a snug well wooded hollow, quite an hour s journey on horseback from any turnpike . This does have
significant impacts on their social relationships, for narrow minded villagers, who do not travel
frequently, appear to be vastly prejudiced and are not willing to welcome new or seemingly strange
looking people, which leads to much social segregation, misunderstanding

  • 2. The Role Of Women In America In July 1848, the Seneca Falls Convention, held by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, became the first meeting to be held on behalf of women s rights. It was at this convention that the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted, and modeled after the Declaration of Independence by asserting the equality of men and women throughout the document. This was to show that men were not the only one who had the right to equality, but also woman. At the time, not everyone, even women, believe in the the idea of women being equal to men because in this century it was believe women were fragile creatures who only live within the domestic and social sphere. Within the past few decades the role of women in America changed dramatically; they have right to vote, to education, to work, etc. Yet substantial inequalities remain between women and men. ... Understanding Psychology And The Ways Tracy Griffin Adulthood and Aging | PSY307 A01 05/24/2016 Faculty: Arthur Swisher Due date: 05/23/2016 Module 5 Assignment 1 In regards to cognitive psychology and the ways in which we define ourselves in terms of individuals, is one of the biggest areas of interest. The area defines the process used in order to acquire, receive, retain and store the information in which is received. During childhood our memory grows, and through adulthood throughout until our middle age, where shortly after we begin to decline in productivity. Initially, when a person grows and changes, their brain begins to change and their cognitive functions worsen. One example being the way in which we appropriately word and express things, begins to decline in fluency and accuracy. (American psychological association, 2006). Studies have shown that the semantic and procedural memory declines the least, while that flashbulb memory declines the most. The amount of large declination varies due to middle age sensitivity and the lack of self efficiency. The memory initially declines based not on the lack of storage, but merely how they retain and store that information which is being received. Naturally, this happens because the cortex shrinks, leaving a serious lack of blood flow to the brain, and triggers that loss, which is naturally all apart of the aging process. Some natural signs of normal age related memory loss can include the occasional forgetfulness of where we placed something ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Civilization Vs. Savagery In The Lord Of The Flies Civilization versus Savagery The Lord of the Flies is a classic novel written by William Golding in the year of 1954. The novel tells the tale of a group of schoolboys who are miraculously marooned on a desert island after their plane crashes. At first the boys attempt to govern themselves and to keep a grasp on civilization and order; In the beginning the island was very much like their home, but eventually this ideology fades into savagery and brutality. The boys resort to theft, torture and even murder. Although The Lord of the Flies depicts many themes and morals, the underlying theme is the battle between the human impulse towards civilization and savagery. This theme is brilliantly and respectively portrayed by battle of the two characters; Jack and Ralph. In the beginning there was only the main protagonist Ralph and Piggy, they soon realise that there is a possibility that there may be other survivors and decide to call the others using a conch shell that Ralph and Piggy had found earlier, Ralph had stopped smiling and was pointing into the lagoon. Something creamy lay among the ferny weeds. [p8] The conch is blown by Ralph ( We can use this to call the others [p9]) Children start to emerge from the bushes including a choir lead by a ginger boy named Jack. Note that they only emerged from hearing the sound of the shell, there were no other instructions, this immediately makes the conch a symbol of law and order. There are probably not many who would agree that the government should have that right. Though having gun control laws is not to that extreme, some would say it is the first step. Growing up in a small town, and also growing up with guns my whole life I was one of those people who did not want gun control laws. After reading each article and analyzing them, I found the Desuka essay to be a better composed essay for several reasons. The first reason the Desuka essay is more effective than Cassidy is, because Desuka tends to be more of a believable authority than does Cassidy. Cassidy at the time of the essay was the NRA S ( National Rifle Association ) executive vise president. The NRA is the biggest advocate for the right to bear arms. In his essay, Cassidy seems to be more involved in trying to sell memberships for the NRA than trying to show why there shouldn t be any gun control laws: There are better ways to advance our society than to excuse criminal behavior. Shakespeare and Plagiarism Essay Shakespeare and Plagiarism William Shakespeare is one of the world s greatest playwrights; however, some say that he does not fully deserve the credit for his work because he plagiarized the work of others. Shakespeare, who was born in Stratford upon Avon in 1564, is also known as the Bard and has written countless plays and poems which have given rise to several novels and movie plots (Chandy). It is said that he found most of his inspiration from nature, as he mentions birds in his works more than any other author (Mabillard). Some people still like to argue the fact that Shakespeare was not wealthy had a lack of education and would have had a difficult time writing such elaborate works without help (wheeler). There are several people who are believed to be the real William Shakespeare including Sir Francis Bacon, the Earl of Oxford, the Earl of Essex, Christopher Marlowe and Queen Elizabeth I herself (Mabillard). This is mainly due to the fact that during the time of Shakespeare these were highly educated and popular people. Also, there are some theories which state that Shakespeare is really just an out of town actor who took the credit for countless works done by other authors and playwrights (did Shakespeare actually write all his plays), and there is a record of him acting in front of Queen Elizabeth in 1594 (Chandy). The main reason that these people believed to be the real Shakespeare, is Shakespeare lacks the background, education, and breeding in order to write such great plays and poems. William Shakespeare could possibly just be a political cover up for a politician or a nobleman. A nobleman could have written the plays but the plays were meant to be read as political commentary, with each character corresponding on a one to one basis with real political figures ... Women were expected to become wives and use their wombs to create a family. Women were expected to obey their husbands and do as they were told. A women s role in Victorian society was to raise the children and make sure the household was kept clean. Women were obligated to fulfill these societal values because they lived in a world where the men dominated the social hierarchy, and women were not free to express nor be themselves. Writers such as Tennyson and Browning explored the societal expectations placed on Victorian women in their poems by describing them as powerless and weak woman who, in one way or another, need a man. Having to rely on a man for survival was normal for Victorian woman. Women understood that their destiny was to follow in the traditions of finding a husband and keeping him happy and never having an opinion on anything. It is as if the woman was purposely meant to be silenced and left to just be a small detail in terms of the big picture just to ensure the guarantee of the official male power, a power that, deeming women unprincipled and emotional, advocated confining them to the domestic sphere where their true self could be easily neutralized (Avarvarei 536). Men created the idea of women being these fragile human beings who aren t smart enough to make their own decisions and needing a man to make them happy. Men needed to convince themselves that women were not capable of caring for themselves nor making their own decisions because men need to feel needed. Many people earned less money than needed to live a comfortable lifestyle. Businesses were letting people with lower incomes buy things on credit. Unfortunately the stocks rose faster than the value of the companies they represented. When the stock market collapsed, these people did not have the money to pay back what they owed. This resulted in financial ruin. Before the stock market crash investors traded about sixteen million shares on the New York stock exchange each day. After Black Tuesday , billions of dollars were lost wiping out thousands of investors. Had most of those investors sold their stock the day before the crash, they would have received a large profit. The 1929 crash uncovered another problem in the United States. The nations banking system was in trouble. In the 1920 s thousands of new banks were opened, however, most lacked adequate money in reserves. Between 1923 and 1929, banks across the country failed daily, but the general rising prosperity hid these failures. The crash made a bad situation even worse, and banks failed at a more rapid rate. Taddeo Introduction Located near Cowan, Pennsylvania, Conley Run is a tributary of Buffalo Creek that has experienced severe degradation due to agricultural activity. Specifically, the deposition of large amounts of animal wastes, pesticides, and fertilizers has resulted in significant eutrophication throughout the stream. Furthermore, bank degradation associated with the movement of livestock has caused the displacement of foreign sediments into stream habitats. These factors, among many others, have caused the lake to be considered impaired by PA DEP. In response, the Buffalo Creek Watershed Alliance, the the Union County Conservation District, and the Department of Environmental Protection and Fish and Boat Commision have partnered in an effort to restore stream habitat and create a riparian buffer to protect the stream. A separate tributary of Buffalo Creek, known as Stony Run, lies upstream from Conley Run. Since it is located in a dense wooded area with little to no agricultural interference, Stony Run has experienced very little degradation in comparison to Conley Run. However, Stony Run also shares a number of similar physical characteristics with Conley Run, such as discharge, watershed area, elevation and slope. Therefore, it will serve as a reference stream for this study. The objective of this study was to assess the stream habitat quality ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

These works offer expositions of and opinions on the philosophical issue of the moral worth of adhering to a certain set of values, and how a person s motivations for doing so can change their worth and the desirability of their way of life. Wolf offers the position that leading an extremely morally good life is undesirable, while Mill s opposing position is that if morality leads to happiness, then that behavior is preferable. To determine which of these stances on the value of morality has the most pertinence, these two arguments will be outlined and consequently analyzed. Their differences and similarities will be enumerated and described, and consequently their merit will be discussed. Finally, Wolf s moral theory will be proven to be inferior to Mills s, due to its prejudice, lack of supportive evidence, and its inability to be universally applicable. In Moral Saints , Susan Wolf defines a moral saint as an individual who is as morally good as it is possible to be. Wolf suggests that there are two types of moral saints, utilitarian and Kantian (Wolf 420). A utilitarian saint is a Loving Saint , one who simply finds their own happiness in the happiness of others and performs moral actions for their own sake (Wolf 420). In the context of this novel, he was the purest good in this ship, which could also be seen as a microcosm of the world as it was. Billy as a whole is seen mainly as a man without fault. • 22. The Decision Between Quantitative And Qualitative Data One of the most important parts of establishing a research design involves the decision between quantitative and qualitative data. Each has its own strength and weaknesses that any successful research design must account for. Perhaps one of the easiest distinctions between the two rests in the sample size. While quantitative data normally involves a large n, or sample size, qualitative data involves a much smaller sample size in comparison. This smaller sample size allows qualitative researchers to focus more on each case, increasing the internal validity of the research, but limiting its external validity. Quantitative based research designs reverse this. The large sample size of quantitative data often makes it difficult for researches to establish causation among the independent and dependent variable(s). The external validly of such designs usually offsets this issue to some extent. Due to their large nature, and use of numerical data, quantitative research is much more replicable when compared to their qualitative counterparts. Unfortunately, the struggle between internal and external validity is a fundamental part of research. Even efforts to combine the two methods to form a mixed methods research design ultimately fail to nullify the issue completely. Keeping this in mind, a quantitative analysis is the most logical given the specific research question and the data available. This chapter seeks to prove that there is a statistically significant difference in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I believe the femme fatale character does celebrate a women s agency by placing women into less traditional roles. Before this type of character became popular, women in movies were portrayed as being feeble and not significant to the plot. Thus, the introduction of the fatal women archetype offered women the opportunity to prove that they can be more than a damsel in distress who needs to be saved by the male hero. This archetype allowed women to be portrayed somewhat equally to men in movies. Women were allowed to be dangerous, cunning, intelligent, and in control of the situation. Thus, the ... This type of reasoning was typical in New England, and set the stage for the witch trials. The content of The Devil in the Shape of a Woman is broken down into sections, by time and place. There are several charts in the book showing the relationship of gender, age, wealth and place on how an accused witch was treated. Most show that women were targeted at a greater extent than anybody. Most observers now agree that witches in the villages and towns of the late Sixteenth and Seventeenth Century New England tended to be poor. They were usually not the poorest women in the community, but the moderately poor. Karlsen tries to show that a woman who was vulnerable was most likely to be accused of being a witch. Even women who had gained wealth because of the death of a husband were prime candidates. Promiscuity was also known to be a reason for being accused accused of witchery. Marital problems often led to a disgruntled husband screaming witch. A woman who could not conceive a child, or one who would not give into her husband s wishes could easily be accused. The Ineffectiveness of Education Reform Essay On January 8, 2002 President Bush signed into law the Leave No Child Behind Act, which significantly changes how public schools receive federal funding. This bipartisan supported attempt at reform, the first of this magnitude since the Elementary Secondary Education Act of 1965, shows a dedicated concern to improving education. However, it is not plausible a punishment/rewards system will positively improve schools on a large scale as a nationwide policy should. This education policy was conceived at a time of prosperity, so whether the government continues to increase spending remains to be seen. The new legislation focuses on a pertinent aspect of education, raising standards for students, but determining funding by test scores does not guarantee widespread results. This new policy relies on the threat tactic of schools improving for fear of federal funding being reduced; if a school does not meet the new standards, how will reducing funding improve it? The government will continue funding school districts which are already capable of invoking sufficient test scores, while cutting back funding to the districts which can not, offering the alternative of government funded transportation to another school. This is the legislation s flaw: it should be teachers taking proficiency tests periodically to display their qualifications in order to remain teaching. Most teachers are dedicated to their own education, and so would not likely oppose such a policy. Instead we have the federal government holding funding with the justification of accountability over school districts, demanding improved test scores. This criticism is rooted in both skepticism towards the policy s effectiveness, and confidence in an alternative potential solution: the government could radically change the profession of teaching/education by establishing a national base salary which would consequently mean an overall raise in ... Known for the reflection of art and literature, the romantic era was the time of fantasy, etherealism and supernaturalism. Female dancers became the superstars of the ballet especially with the introduction of pointe work, the iconic romantic tutu and themes of a love that could never be. On a softly lit stage lights flickered over ghostly forms. Throughout the romantic era many innovative features were introduced such as gas lighting, trap doors and fly wires. Gas lighting was used as the transition light from sunshine to moonlight for the ballet acts. Gas lighting created a mood to tell the story of a love that was destined to fail, especially in Giselle. The dark light of the second act filtered across the willis as they haunted the graveyard. Cache Coherence Essay A Survey of Literature on Cache Coherence Author(s) Name Department, Institution Address E mail Abstract Many multiprocessor chips and computer systems today have hardware that supports shared memory. This is because shared memory multicore chips are considered a cost effective way of providing increased and improved computing speed and power since they utilize economically interconnected low cost microprocessors. Shared memory multiprocessors utilize cache to reduce memory access latency and significantly reduce bandwidth needs for the global interconnect and local memory module. However, a problem still exists in these systems: cache coherence problem introduced by local caching of data, which leads to reduced processor execution speeds. The problem of cache coherence in hardware is reduced in today s microprocessors through the implementation of various cache coherence protocols. In Ghana, the pluralism systems are poorly articulated and has been the cause of growing contradiction and conflict (Kasanga and Kotey, 2001). This can be substantiated by studies from Yeboah and Shaw (2011) that find the traditional institutions are making makeshift plans in order to sell lands even without the knowledge of the appropriate planning authority. Let the Right One in Analysis Essay BONDING THROUGH EXILE: An Analysis of Mise en Scène in Let the Right One In The theme of loneliness and isolation has been predominant in cinema since its inception, but Tomas Alfredson explores the idea in a unique way in his 2008 Swedish romantic horror film, Let the Right One In. Set in the snowy winter of Stockholm, the film depicts the similarly cold and depressing life of Oskar, a young target of bullying. This frozen, barren setting contributes to the complete isolation that the viewer feels with the characters. Through strategic shot composition and specific color and mood choices, Alfredson shows how both Oskar and Eli are cut off from the world in different ways, and then how their common bloodlust brings them together. ... The camera slowly pans around the playground, showing the bland walls of the apartment complex surrounding it to amplify their sense of overwhelming loneliness. Oskar, wanting to find a companion in Eli, provides her with his rubik s cube to solve. The rubik s cube can also be seen as Eli providing an answer to Oskar s problems. Both his life and his rubik s cube are puzzles that need solving, and Eli literally drops in to solve everything for him. This early scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie and establishes both the characters as lonely outcasts that need to be saved. As the relationship between Oskar and Eli continues to blossom, Oskar finds out that Eli lives off blood to survive. After this realization, there is a scene where Eli arrives at Oskar s house. Oskar attempts to let her in by motioning and gesturing but she refuses to cross the threshold. She finally enters without his permission, causing her to bleed from every opening on her face, turning her into a grotesque image of her true vampiric form. This causes Oskar to give her permission to enter. This scene symbolizes the finality of the relationship between Oskar and Eli. Eli is a violent murderer, and Oskar has violent ambitions, and this is the moment where Eli attempts to turn those ambitions into reality. The revolutions started in Poland in 1989 and spread to Hungary, East Germany, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and Romania declaring independence from the Soviet Union. Moscow did not interfere with any of these uprisings within the eastern bloc. In George Eliot s Silas Marner , there was a clearer organization of the social hierarchy, with people in different classes not frequently interact with each other and much less restrained social mobility in the hierarchy. Generally, social relationships in Silas Marner are relatively dynamic, yet heavily influenced by social status and geographical boundaries. In Silas Marner , people tend to live in secluded communities and rarely have any contact with people living in different areas, which illustrates how relationships are conventionally formed based on similarities in term of daily routine, living areas, tradition and customs. This is demonstrated in how Silas Marner is ostracized from the rest of the community in Raveloe at first, for he comes from a land that is not commonly known by the other villagers, as the world outside their own direct experience was a region of vagueness and mystery . The fact that they feel almost threatened by the uncertainties and how they quickly the relevance of the existence of any other place but their own illustrates a sense of utter security they feel towards their land, which again suggests how they must have been clinging to the place and will be more accepting towards their fellow villagers than those coming from faraway lands. The exclusiveness is further highlighted by the location of Raveloe, which is a village nestled in a snug well wooded hollow, quite an hour s journey on horseback from any turnpike . This does have significant impacts on their social relationships, for narrow minded villagers, who do not travel frequently, appear to be vastly prejudiced and are not willing to welcome new or seemingly strange looking people, which leads to much social segregation, misunderstanding ...
