Haunted America By Patricia Nelson Limerick
In the essay Haunted America, Patricia Nelson Limerick ponders whether or not there is any benefit
for society to have historical knowledge. Limerick contradicts herself numerous times in her
opinion on the usefulness of history. She implies that there are many lessons that can be learned
from history. However, Limerick is disappointed in the humanrace because it fails to learn from the
mistakes of others. She therefore wonders, What do we gain besides a revival and restoration of
the misery? (Limerick, 473). Based on Limerick s examination of people and history, one can
conclude that objectively history is useless, however, theoretically, people would be much better off
if they learned from the lessons that the past presents.

Torture, maiming, rape, mutilation, murder all of the worst injuries that human being inflict on
each other serve as the capstones to these stories (472). Therefore, history is somewhat
detrimental to society because people start viewing each other as cruel, egotistical enemies. When
analyzing the Battle of Bad Axe, Limerick wonders what good the memory of such a dreadful
event can do. She asks, What good can knowledge of this miserable story do? [...] What exactly
does knowledge of this event add to American self understanding and well being? (473).
To answer Limerick s question, one might state that objectively, the knowledge of appalling
occurrences is futile because people do not learn from the past mistakes. This is evident when
comparing the Indian white and the Vietnam wars. The two wars are very similar in that they are
both guerrilla war, in which the insider has a greater advantage over the intruder. Limerick writes,
The lessons of the Indian white wars and the lessons of the Vietnam war were strikingly similar
because they were both the lessons of guerrilla war, the kind of war in which the local, insider
knowledge held by natives gave them a great advantage. The invaders, by contrast, were decidedly
out of their place (488). Intruders are at a greater disadvantage

International Students Can Overcome Challenges
International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many
factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are
studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are
much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to
adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international studentin the US studying at ASU, have
faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I
will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations. The first
challenge, and in my opinion the most crucial challenge that I had to face was learning the English
language, and communicating with different people. Almost every international studentis faced with
this challenge; Alberto FernaМЃndez FernaМЃndez said, International students often face
adjustment issues impacting their level of satisfaction with their experience. These involve oral
language proficiency, as well as feelings of anxiety and isolation resulting from language
deficiencies . This challenge was important for me to overcome due to the fact that I am here for
the sole purpose to study in an American University, so obviously I am required to learn the
language. Likewise, I have to learn how to speak so that I can be able to communicate with other
students and professors. I personally

The Technology Development Of Autonomous Cars
ABSTRACT
Autonomous Vehicles are already being developed by the majority of the automobile companies as
Audi, GM, Toyota among others, however, the approach on the technology development to achieve
the autonomy is not the same for all of them. Some companies want so they invest a lot in artificial
intelligence and software development. On the other side companies such as Toyota have the
objective to improve the safety features on their cars, doing for that a lot of research on sensors and
ECU (Electronic Control Units). In this project was researched 7 major companies that are
currently investing in autonomous cars, being Google the only one that is new on the automobile
industry but, accordingly to researches carried out by the group, the most advanced on this new
type of technology, showing expressive results in their monthly reports
INTRODUCTION
Autonomous cars are going to be a reality on people s routines in a near future when the first
units starts to being sold, however the unmanned technology is far from being a recent discovery.
Researches have been conducted on the past 90 years when the American army started to
assembly flying bombs equipped with gyroscopes and barometers as components of a navigation
system. Ever since, the unmanned technology has evolved in a tremendous way, and after the first
GPS satellite launch in 1978, vehicles can rely on a navigation systems that is reliable and has
coverage all over the globe.

Nourishment In Robinson Crusoe
Daniel Defoe s novel Robinson Crusoe reflects the most progressive, democratic ideas of the early
Enlightenment. Using the theme of the island, located out of contact with the community, Defoe
demonstrates Robinson s life as an example of the intrinsic value of inner freedom in social
development and the creation of material and spiritual base of a society. Transferring the early
Enlightenment ideas, Defoe shows the way Robinson, former Puritan mystic, comes to the
complete concept of the universe. Confessions of a protagonist demonstrate that reasonable
Robinson makes this possible after the conquest of nature, which the author describes not as
physical development of the island but the cognition of laws of nature and reasons of existence....

While Defoe seems to shift between these two ideas of depiction of the setting, both hardships that
stimulate physical work and ideal circumstances for philosophical mental work lead to spiritual
transformation of the protagonist. As a result, striving for success of young, driven by the spirit of
the time Robinson transforms into the Robinson, who on the Island of Despair overcomes the
difficulties with great fortitude and returns home as an entrepreneur. Presented by Defoe, the
evolution of the consciousness of Robinson from desperate to optimistic insight gives reason to the
Enlightenment educational program of the improvement of a man and a society. Thus, the savage
state of Nature in which Man is threatened and challenged is the author s educational experiment,
in which Man is self nurtured. An experiment in forming spiritual maturity, moral strength of the
personality through the work. While the work is a forced, urgent need to survive on a desert
island it does not bother hero as it becomes a remedy for despair. Defoe elevates a physical labor
on a spiritual level. What seems punishment at first, the reason tries to look at as blessing. While
the initial inner state of the protagonist is the despair, the overcoming many difficulties, the Bible

Oryx And Crake Corruption
Wherever there is good in the world, there is deemed to be evil. Margaret Atwood established
that relationship while writing Oryx and Crake. Oryx, a free spirited loving individual, viewed
the best for the world. However, the post apocalyptic present is molded and formed by the
immorality of one man: Crake. Told through the eyes of Snowman, the characters of Oryx and
Crake represent the good and evilrespectively. In the previous universe of Oryx and Crake,
evilness and corruption are strongly present in any direction. The online world encourages graphic
and violent material that would be highly prohibited in the modern world. From live executions in
Asia (82) to animal snuff sites where cats are torn apart by hand or frogs are stomped ... Show more

However, it was unknown that Crake had a more devious and elaborate plan. Throughout his
younger years, Crake questioned the perception of life often asking What is reality? (83) and
experimenting to see the capability of science and to discover what can be created. From his
study at Watson Crick, Crake saw the potential creations that science was capable of. From
ChickieNobs, chicken parts with a high growth rate...built in (203), to wolvogs who are bred to
deceive (205), the possibilities are endless. From there, Crake went on to develop his Paradise
project. At first glance, Crake s main initiative, a single pill named the BlyssPluss that would
protect the user against all known sexually transmitted diseases, (294) appeared to be harmless
and life changing. However, similar to the other corporations techniques, Creake did not create a
cure. He created a fatal disease: a disease to cause the worldwide plague (326). Throughout, Crake
foreshadows his grand plan by discussing theoretical scenarios with Jimmy. He becomes obsessed
with the idea of how the elimination of one generation could break the link in time between one
generation and the next (223). Without a generation of experienced and intelligent individuals,
humanity stands no chance on surviving on its own. Afterwards, it is simply game over forever

Law Enforcement Recruitment Process
The proposed solution is where Law enforcement will bring forward a solution in hiring and
recruitment in law enforcement agencies. In law enforcement, the process of hiring and training
officer most commonly involves three basic steps: screening and testing of applicant which
includes, background checks, oral interview, written statements, psychological test and the like,
basic/ academy training, and field training (Koper Moore, 2001). Law enforcementagencies are
seeking solution that will help with the pitfalls of hiring and recruiting qualified applicants. First,
law enforcement agencies need more diversity in the department. Diversity is important because it
will be a sense of equity to the public, especially in the minorities community. Also, diversity will

With the North Carolina Justice Analysis showed that attrition is 4 percent in the United States. It
is important that this issue need to be addressed on the entry level, once the recruitment start. To
decrease high attraction in law enforcement, the department needs to improve with educating
applicant about the reality of being a police officer. Also, recruiter must identify characteristics of
police officer who stay and focus recruiting on individual who have similar traits (Roufa, 2015).
Also, 10 year retirement program for police officers need to be revised. After revising the retirement
program, it should be extended from 10 years of service to 15 years of service. This program is
hindering hiring, recruitment, and retention in law enforcement agencies. It is important that

Air Canada s Business Strategy Essay
Over the years Air Canada s business strategy has changed and has been reconstructed a number of
times. Air Canada s mission has always remained the same, connecting Canada and world (Air
Canada, 2016), but their visions and goals, have transformed.
Air Canada s early strategy was to grow the business, with minimal concern about their staff
members and customers. Without any benefits or rewards their staff felt underappreciated. Their
customers felt as though their feedback wasn t being heard but in the eyes of Air Canada as long as
their business was expanding, they were satisfied.
This was evident with the purchase of Canadian Airlines, in 1999 (The National, 2003). With the
purchase of this airline, Air Canada also inherited their estimated eight billion dollar debt (The
National, 2003). Also inherited from the merger, were underappreciated employees and under
trained employees who lacked morale (The National, 2003). In 2003, Air Canada filed for
bankruptcy (The National, 2003), this was due to the large financial deficit, the economy and the
underappreciated/paid employees. Although, this was a difficult time for the airline, this truly
marked the change in how the airline is structured. In 2005, it marked the true return of Air Canada,
they reached record breaking revenues and far exceeded anyone s expectation, including their own.
Currently Air Canada, is the largest Canadian Airline, which has a lot to do with their change in
business strategy.
Air Canada is now an

Andrew Jackson s Colorful Military Career
The seventh president of the United States had a colorful military career before he became
Commander in Chief. Andrew Jackson, born 1767 in South Carolina, was a prisoner of war
during War of Independence; his treatment resulting in a lifelong dislike of Great Britain, (
Andrew Jackson n.d.). After the British captured the belligerent Jackson, he was ordered to clean a
British officer s boots. When he refused, the officer drew his sword and slashed Jackson s hand to
the bone, (Patrick, n.d.). This memorable treatment by the British inspired Jackson to take up arms
against the British in the War of 1812. It also helped to foment Jackson s political ideologies that
were staunchly anti federalist. In addition to his encounters with the British during the
Revolutionary War, Jackson was notorious for having indulged in many a duel, including one in
which he killed Charles Dickenson (Patrick, n.d.).
Jackson s early military career consists mainly of his involvement in the War of 1812, followed
by the Creek War in 1813 1814, and then culminating in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. This
string of military victories for Jackson was later supplemented by brutal victories in the First
Seminole War in 1818. Having had a meager role to play in the War of 1812, Jackson hungered for
glory and led the West TennesseeMilitia in the Creek War of 1813 1814. This led to promotions
for Jackson. Jackson s military career reached its pinnacle, though, during the Battle of New
Orleans.

The World Needs Abortion Essay
One of the most important philosophical issues ever concerns the definition of a person and who is
able to feel. Abortion, which is a deliberate termination of pregnancy, is one of the most important
practical applications of that issue. Life on Earth is threatened with destruction from overpopulation
and the poverty that overpopulation causes. Fortunately, abortion can prevent overpopulation. The
question about whether abortion shouldbe done is primarily the question about whether the embryo
or fetus is a person. In most cases, the embryo weighs less than 100grams: less than 10% of human
brain. Abortion should be legal since it is useful and since humans become conscious after birth, not
before.
Values for Human Society
People are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If an embryo that does not feel is terminated, then the conscious object, a person, is never created.
Not creating a person is not immoral: When people are not having sex, they are not creating a
person. If the society has an optimum population, the net benefit (benefit minus harm) of an extra
person will on average be zero.
Practical Effects of Abortion
The world has a problem of overpopulation, not under population. The environmental problems
occur largely because too many people exist and strain the natural resources. Thus, not creating
an extra person is on average good for the society. (If creating a person would on average be good,
then more people should be created, and the population size is too small, not too large.) In abortion,
when a mother chooses not to create a person, the person is unwanted and thus probably should not
be created.
Much of the poverty found throughout the world is caused by having too many children. Abortion
prevents that and thus reduces poverty. Poverty contributes to crime. Therefore, abortion reduces
crime. Unfortunately, the government in the USA does not support abortion for poor people.
A serious defect in an embryo gives additional reasons for its termination. For example, Down
syndrome is a severe congenital disorder that is a major cause of mental retardation, worldwide.
(Cozic 138) Fortunately, fetal testing (with abortion) can prevent it. If the couple with a defective
embryo is

Cilia Function
Cilia are organelles protruding from body cells, consisting of microtubules. These structures are
important for hemostasis and cell development. Along with a group of proteins called kinesins
superfamily proteins (KSFs), the cilia also play an important role in SHH signaling. The proteins
found in this family serve a variety of functions relating to microtubule regulation, such as KIF4A
and KIF21A. KIF4A controls microtubule length during celldivision, whereas KIF21A inhibits
microtubule growth at the cell cortex. A prominent member of this family is the proteinKIF7, a
homologue of the protein Costal2 (Cos2) found in Drosophila and zebrafish. Both serve relatively
similar functions with relation to the Hh signaling pathway, though there... Show more content on

The level of activity of Gli genes, and thus Hh pathway activation, determines skin tumor
phenotype: high level signaling is shown to result in BCC and low level signaling is shown to
result in follicular derived tumors such as basaloid follicular hamartoma (BFH) (2). Gli2 is
involved in the expression of cell cycle regulation genes in the Shh pathway such as E2F1,
CCND1, CDC2 and epidermal differential genes. Over expression of Gli2 causes the up
regulation of such cell cycle regulation genes in developing hair follicles. Shh activation most
specifically promotes degradation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene (2), thus repressing
transcription of p21, a key suppressor of cyclin E in cell cycle regulation. Thus, G1 arrest is
overrode, and the inability to control cell cycle is promoted: a key feature of cancer. Sufu and Kif7
have overlapping functions in regulating Gli transcription factors. Specifically, Gli2 forms a
complex with Sufu to prevent transcriptional activity via preventing accumulation of Gli2
transcriptional factors into the nucleus, thus repressing Hh pathway transduction (3). Sufu also
plays a role in stabilizing Gli2 by blocking Spop, an E3 ligase involved in degradation of Gli2 (3).
In keratinocytes, Kif7

Analysis Of The Poem Anastrophe Elegy By Rebecca Foust
The poem Anastrophe Elegy by Rebecca Foust tells the story of a woman who falls madly in love
with a man. This woman, was the it girl she was talented, smart, beautiful, and athletic. She had
many different roles in peoples lives such as girlfriend, wife, mother, friend, coach and many more.
However, she met a man whom she falls in lovewith. As a result of love she gives her all to him.
She went above and beyond for this man giving up much of herself to make sure he was happy.
After spending much of her time and money for the man she loved, he ups and leaves her. When
the love of her life left, he not only left with himself but he left with a part of her. The persona says
that the woman was not the same after he left. Throughout the poem there is a sense of grief
brought on from this tragic relationship and the unwarranted results of the relationship. Although
the woman in the story did not die, her spirit did die when the love of her life left. Therefore, the
theme of sadness is shown in this poem through the anastrophe structure, stylechoice of an elegy,
and the mood. Firstly, the theme of sadness is presented through the structure of an Anastrophe.
When it comes to poetry, the structure it is presented is very important. The structure of a poem can
determine the rhythm. Furthermore, it can make a poem sound fast pace, slow, anxious or calm.
The structure controls how one may read the poem or even perceive the poem. The author chooses

Chandigarh, India Abstract This paper proposes direct torque control of induction motor
simulation using conventional method and space vector pulse width modulation technique for
ripple reduction. Direct Torque Control is a control technique used in AC drive systems to obtain
high performance torque control and thereby controlling the speed of induction motor. The
principle is based on simultaneous decoupling of stator flux and electromagnetic torque of AC
drive system. DTC drives use hysteresis comparators and they suffer from high torque ripple and
variable switching frequency problem. The proposed SVM based DTC reduces torque ripples.
The basis of the SVM DTC methodology is the calculation of the required voltage space vector to
compensate the flux and torque errors and its generation using the SVM at each sample period. The
performance of this method is demonstrated by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software.
Simulation results presented in this paper show the torque, flux linkage and stator current ripple
decreases with the proposed SVM DTC algorithm. Keywords: Direct Torque Control, Space vector

The Pros And Cons Of Stricter Gun Control Laws
Following the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, lawmakers have begun
reconsidering the gun laws that are currently in place. Many states have previously implemented
red flag laws (Johnson 2). However, after the recent events, lawmakers are debating on whether or
not those laws are enough. Of course, to most people, stronger guncontrol laws seems like an
obvious decision, but it is not that easy. Gun control laws are complicated. It is a balancing act in
the United Statesbetween public safety and the right to bear arms (Mueller 2). Lawmakers must
carefully balance the safety and constitutional rights of citizens. This is difficult to do when
everyone has different values and points of view. The previously mentioned

Why Was Abraham Lincoln A Good President
Abraham Lincoln was the best president ever, there is no doubt about it that he wasn t a bad
president. There are plenty of reasons to list Abraham Lincoln as a great president. Anyone could
list 5 reasons why Abraham Lincoln was such a good president, like fighting in the Civil War, the
Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, working young, and doing his mom s clothes.
Lincoln s early life had less than a year of education, but he was still a very smart man. Abraham
Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky. Abe didn t grow up as an only

Experiences Of Being A Teenage Mother
Experiences of Being a Teenage Mother in the UK.
The aim of this review is to observe and describe the experiences of being a Teenage Mother. To
also create guidelines to help develop a support programme that is contextual and relevant to the
needs of teenage mothers. It was found that previous education experiences and social support
groups were important factors in influencing the way teenage mothers have adapted to being a
mother and how they practiced childcare. Becoming a teenage mother formed the feeling of
responsibility within the maternal role which led to them showing affection towards their babies.
However, teenage mothers appreciated the help they received from their families and health care

The aim of this review is to systematically review the qualitative evidence on the lives of teenage
mothers, under the age of twenty, within the UK from 2000 to 2014.
It is agreed that teenage pregnancy and early motherhood can also be related to those who are
lacking money, or material possessions and poor educational achievements, poor physical and
mental health, social isolation, poverty and other connected factors. There is also a rising
acknowledgement that socio economic disadvantage can be both a cause and a consequence of
teenage parenthood.
Teenage pregnancy is seen as a concern in the United Kingdom (UK). There has been little research
from primary care observing teenage motherhood and its effects.
Aim:
To explore the experiences of all teenage mothers in relation to their role as a mother and their
expectations of their future as a teen mother.
Methods:
The research data discussed in this sections has been drawn from a qualitative study examining
young women s experiences to teenage motherhood. The study focused on key decisions, choices
and experiences made by young women as they became mothers.

Defining Fair Punishment
The first and greatest punishment of the sinner is the conscience of sin.
Lucius Annaeus Seneca
What is the purpose of punishment? Ultimately a fair and effective punishment must not only
prevent future transgressions, but also teach a valuable life lesson. While some punishments may
seem standard: a grounding for breaking curfew, a detention for misbehaving in class, a jail
sentence for robbery, not all punishments are so cut and dry. Take the case of Casey Heynes. A
video which has since gone viral depicts the March 2011 incident. Ritchard Gale, 12, appears to
tease and taunt Casey, 15, and unleash a few unretaliated punches. In response, Casey picks
Ritchard up, and slams him to the ground. While Ritchard was relatively physically unscathed in
the encounter, Casey could have inflicted quite serious damage. It was revealed through family and
witness interviews that Casey was indeed provoked, and had suffered bullying at the hands of
classmates for years. Regardless, school and societal rules were broken, and consequences must
follow. What then, is a fair punishment? Casey Heynes should receive a four day at home
suspension. In addition, he should participate in a bullying prevention group at his school and
attend a one day anger management course. This represents a fair punishment, as it acts as a
reasonable deterrent, allows Casey to demonstrate remorse, and is reflective of both Casey and
Ritchard s feelings. In order for a punishment to be

Why Didn T Have Velcro Shoes
Have you ever been outside during a hot summer day and life s going great until u feel a small

would just be better if we didn t have them at all or some one came up with a good solution. First
of all mosquitos are one of the most annoying animals of all time with their annoying little wings

shoes with shoelace sometimes people even have shoes that have shoelaces but have this extra

North By Northwest Essay
The film North by Northwest was released in 1959 and is a suspenseful film, directed by Alfred
Hitchcock. The films protagonist is actor Cary Grant as Roger Thornhill. He plays New York City
ad executive pursued by ruthless spy Phillip Vandamm after Thornhill is mistaken for a government
agent. Hunted relentlessly by Vandamm s associates, the harried Thornhill ends up on a cross
country journey.
In the opening scene Hitchcock uses the opening credits to create a scene of suspense and contrast.

This smoothness effect lets the scene cuts seem more natural which keeps the viewer engaged to
the story. North by Northwest is a film where the location of the key characters often changes
frequently. It is therefore important to incorporate the technique of establishing shots to ensure the
viewers know what is taking place in the scene. The film North by Northwest uses a wide range of
camera techniques throughout the film in order to create a feeling of suspense and danger. The
establishing shots, close ups, medium shots, and shot reverse shots all play an significant role in
conveying suspense to the audience, while also creating continuousness as well as adding a
believable element.
Hitchcock avoids the killing scene clichГ© by placing Roger Thornhill in the middle of nowhere
rather than a clichГ©, for example, placing him in a dark street, with only the light from the street
lamp, the killer then comes from behind, emerges from the darkness and kills him. Instead
Hitchcock places Roger Thornhill in the uncommon position to most suspense films, a crop field.
This creates questions from the viewers, what s going to happen

Tourism Is A Key Pillar Of New Zealand s Economy
Tourism is a key pillar of New Zealand s economy. The tourism industry in New Zealand
contributes to nearly 3.7% of the country s gross domestic product. Though a key pillar of the
economy, it is also raised a lot of problem in its environment. Tourism is gradually damaging the
environment of New Zealand and it has raised an alarm for the country to consider its pillar sector.
New Zealand has magnificent sceneries such as the Mt. Victoria, the Fiordland National Park, The
Southern Lakes and the Expansive national museum. This essay endeavors to ascertain that tourism
in New Zealand is causing environmental issues in the country.
Discussion
Tourism has adversely affected the environment of New Zealand in the following ways: its
biggest impact is on the loss of quality land. Some of New Zealand s unhampered natural
environments are experiencing human interference in their natural setting. Some environments
such as in the Fiordland National Park the tall tussock grassland is slowly degrading. Only a
small percentage of 10% of this grassland that existed is present. This grassland has slowly been
degraded since 1984. Through the reduction in grassland covered areas in New Zealand leads to a
lot of soil erosion. Soil erosion leads to the loss of rich nutrients that help improve the environment.
Soil erosion leads to desertification in the land. Reduced soil fertility has a direct impact on the
produce of the environment and farming. Deteriorated soil further leads to the

Religion Is Man Made Man Essay
Religion is man made and has nothing to do with spirituality. Belief on God does not require a
religion. Spirituality is native to the human being and we are constantly in contact with that,
which we cannot measure in physical terms. The belief in a higher power or God does not require
religion. Religion is a man made institution developed specifically for the control of mass people
by a smaller group of people. The intermingling of spirituality and religionis a major problem. There
can be no consensus on human moralityand ethics until it is done without religious interference. I
am willing to believe in a creator (although no knowledge has gone so far to define it) but not
necessarily the being described in the Bible or Quran or any other religious text. One may argue
that the degree of order and the complexity of that order may demand the existence of a creator,
and the observable physical laws are obvious but there may be spiritual laws that underpin reality
as well. Those laws are the foundation of ethics and morality. Religious people believe that religion
is the tool by which the connection or the rules of restricting behavior is accomplished. But it is not
the case because the inherent bias that each religion has interferes... Show more content on

The Casey Anthony trial is considered a symbolic crime because it led to moral panic and also a
law being passed. The law is called Caylee s Law , this law enforces reporting children missing in
a timely manner. Failure to report children missing in the time set by your state can result in a
misdemeanor or a felony and other severe charges. Each state set their own age and time required
to report a child missing but it does show that this Casey Anthony case raised awareness and made
this a symbolic crime. Many other stories were very similar to the Casey Anthony case that were
made into laws. For example Amber Alert and Code Adam. The time reporting requirements can be
found on many websites including the FBI website. Many were worried that this law can cause
many issues like parents panicking when they think their child is missing and making an
unnecessary reports which could override reports of children that were actually missing but despite
the concerns many states still moved forward with the law. According to Parents Magazine family

The Anti Sikh riots in the 1984 year of riots had been anything in particular. People are aggrieved
when they hear of the incident and narrate stories of how runaway crime could have increased

A Common Problem Faced By Immigrants Essay
Recent happenings around the world have brought the subject of migration to the forefront of
everyday conversation. However, the migration phenomenon is not a new one but can be traced as
far back as human history itself. In some way, migration can be seen as an innate part of animal
behavior and the human experience. Historically, several push and pull factors have forced several
groups to move across the globe in the hopes of improving their situations. However, the
circumstances surrounding one s migration to a new place differs for each individual. Apart from
the political and economic strife of migration to a different country, immigrants and refugees are
left with the added struggle of maintaining their social identity, culture, and kinship when
acclimating to a new environment.
In order to properly explain this topic, I draw on the information from several articles, lectures,
films, and interviews I have conducted with close family and friends.
A common problem faced by immigrants is social identity. Social identity refers to the need to
identify as a member of a group and not merely as an individual. Man is a social being and being
able to identify with a group helps in giving a sense of belonging, developing self esteem and a
sense of pride. Social identity and sense of self are therefore important to an individual s well
being. As a member of a group, every individual performs the role(s) and expectations of that group.
However, intersectional identities exist

The Latin Word La Raza
The Latin word La Raza, spoken by many Latin Americans united by culture and spiritual beliefs,
is translated into the race. This idea of La Raza brings the cultures separated around the world
together based on the similar ideas of a great destiny and culture values. There are many concepts
that are different from the Anglos, which translates to white, English speaking American, but there
are many attributes that are similarly seen within each culture. Among many Anglos, there is a
racist assumption that those who are Mexican are lazy when there are cultural reasons for the
way Latin Americans choose to live. Those among the Mexican culture has a strong belief in a
splendid destiny planned by God that hasn t occurred based on the culture or groups of Mexican
people s sins; such as, the thieves and drunks (William, 1964, p. 15). This belief in God already
having a plan for each individual among the earth has created a calm atmosphere toward planning
for the future. Many Mexican Americans consider the act to plan frivolous because God has already
planned their future, and they permit fate to control their decisions. Instead of planning for the
future, the most important role is familyresponsibilities among the male and female presently. As
stated in William s article, Gregorio said, I owe everything to my family. Were it not for my
parents love for each other, I would never have been born. They raised me and taught me all I

Persuasive Essay On Football
Specific purpose: To convince my audience to back the move to hold the FIFA World Cup 2022 in
Qatar.
Central idea: FIFA is focused on bringing people together and break down barriers, therefore,
despite the many controversies concerning the ability of Qatar holding the games, it is a great idea
as it will help in promoting cohesion.
Introduction
According to FIFA (2014), its mandate is to develop football in every part of the world and for all
the people. The association turns the accomplishment of the FIFA World Cupinto football
expansion and restructuring its assets to the international football community. Also, it is dedicated
to capitalizing in the global football progress. FIFA World Cup 2022 has been met with a lot of
controversies, especially, after the announcement that the games will be held in Qatar. Mainly,
countries and human rights organizations have expressed their concerns on the issue (Gibson,
2014). Some argue that Qatar offers unsafe environment especially for the many migrant laborers
who are tasked with building infrastructure to host the World Cup. Despite all the arguments, it is
significant to focus on the benefits that the FIFA World Cup 2022 will have in the country and
also on the bid by the federation to promote cohesion globally. FIFA is focused on bringing people
together and break down barriers, therefore, despite the many controversies concerning the ability
of Qatar holding the games, it is a great idea as it will help in promoting unity.

Health Disparities In Health Care In Birmingham, Alabama
Alabama ranks poorly on many health indicators. It is ranked 47th out of 50 in the nation in overall
health; 43rd in cancer deaths, 2nd in deaths from cardiovascular disease and 3rd in the incidence of
diabetes (Healthy People 2010). Also, Alabama is ranked 5th in the number of residents without
health insurance. In my opinion, I believe the greatest challenge that these healthdisparities present
is that very often socioeconomic status determines an individual s health status. Growing up in
Birmingham, Alabama, I witnessed many people in my community suffer from health issues
because compared to other ethnic groups, African Americans, tend to be far less trusting of
physicians and their medical advice. Notably, the distrust is rooted in pass corrupt cases, such as,

There must be more organizations such as, Covenant house which is an association that helps

Bubonic Plague vs Smallpox Essay
A Battle of Ills Throughout history, many diseases have come and gone, leaving waves in the water
of human progress. And though illnesses have been numerous, only two diseases have truly
affected entire civilizations, ravaging the culture and lifestyle of the peoples, and escalating to
epidemical heights. The two scourges are bubonic plague, which influenced Europe during the 1300
s, and smallpox, which impacted Mesoamerica and the Native Americans from the 1500 s to the
1900 s. To understand how these sicknesses were so altering to their related societies, one must
understand the disease. First, one must know the background of the disease. The earliest known
outbreak of smallpox originated in Asia, more specifically in India (Carr... Show more content on

2)(Mee Jr. para. 32). The third is the septicemic strand of the disease, causing high fever and the
skin to turn dark shades of purple due to disseminated intravascular coagulation, or excessive
blood clotting (Hayden para 2). General symptoms of the bubonic plague are headache,
weakness, aches and chills, rapid pulse, slurred speech, confusion, and fatigue (Mee Jr. para.
14). The bubonic plague in medieval Europe killed about one third of all its population, with the
chance of living if one contracted the disease very low (Mee Jr. para. 37). Though there are
deviations of the bubonic plague, they are all spread when an infected flea changes from its rat
host to a human host, thus contaminating the human host, but the pneumonic form can also be
spread through the air from person to person (Mee Jr. para. 13)(Mee Jr. para. 32). Just like the
bubonic plague, there are also variations to smallpox. For instance, there are two clinical forms
of smallpox, variola major and variola minor (CDC para. 2). Variola major is the more severe
and common of the two, characterized by a more extensive rash and higher fever (CDC para. 2).
There are four types of variola major smallpox. There is ordinary, the most common type;
modified, which is mild and occurs in previously vaccinated people; flat, which is very rare and
brutal; and hemorrhagic, which is also very infrequent and severe (CDC para. 2). The symptoms of

Joan of arc was nicknamed The Maid of OrlГ©ans ,is considered a heroine of France for her role
during the Lancastrian phase of the Hundred years war, and was canonized as a roman saint.
When Joan of Arc was 12 she began hearing some voices. She believed they where from god. They
were telling her to disguise herself as a man and join the French army and fight. At first she was
afraid, but she did what she was told to, because she was loyal to God and she knew it was him

war took place in France. Joan of arc led the French army to victory over the English at OrlГ©ans.
What was the source of this person s power? How did this person achieve power? How did this

She led the French army, so the power was from the army. She used this power to lead the French
army to victory in 1453. The Hundred Years Warwas a long struggle between England and France

Examples Of Bird Symbolism In Macbeth
Samantha Xing pd 1
Ms Dwyer
Bird, Bird, Bird, Bird is the Word
Birds such as pigeons may be insignificant to New Yorkers, but other species are symbolic in
cultures elsewhere. They are often used in literature metaphorically to represent someone or
something. A prominent example of birdsymbolism is in the famous play, Romeo and Juliet by
Shakespeare where Juliet is associated with the dove to represent her purity and innocence.
Shakespeare also utilizes bird symbolism in another play, Macbeth, to emphasize how Macbeth
changes throughout the play and to foreshadow Duncan s death.

Lady Macbeth foreshadows the death of Duncan by saying, The raven himself is hoarse / That
croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan / Under my battlements (1.5.45 47). Here, Lady Macbeth
compares the messenger to a raven , saying that his voice is hoarse . In some cultures, the raven
is believed to smell death before the occurrence of death. In deeper context, Lady Macbeth is
saying that the voice of the raven is hoarse as a result of mimicking the same words over and
over again that imply Duncan s death. Because the raven has the ability to smell death, a
conclusion can be made that Duncan s death is inevitable. Another example of foreshadowing
through the use of birds is in the conversation between Ross and an old man. The old man says,
On Tuesday last / A falcon, towering in her pride of place, / Was by a mousing owl hawk d at
and kill d (2.4.14 16). This means that last Tuesday, a falcon was flying around a place where she
thought was safe but an unexpected owl killed her. The falcon represents Duncan who sees
Macbeth as his loyal subject and makes an assumption that Macbeth s home is safe. However,
Macbeth, represented by the owl, murders him and takes away his power and throne, or
metaphorically, the falcon s pride of place

The Life Of A Registered Sex Offender
The Life of a Registered Sex Offender

Abstract
When we hear the phrase, sex offender, we normally feel repulsed. We think of dirty old creepy
men. I for one used to do this, I won t lie. This is because people like to rush to judgment. But my
opinions changed when I came to the realization that it s not just creepy old men who are sex
offenders. I want to talk about them, but not those who are serial rapists or child molesters; they
don t deserve to be talked about. I m talking about people who are convicted, whether it s falsely,
or unjustly, and have to wear a stamp on their forehead for the rest of their lives saying they are a
sex offender.
I have an uncle named Michael and he s 29; he ll be 31 in October. In 2006 in Fredericksburg,
Virginia, he was convicted of rape. A young woman lied and said he raped her, and now he will
forever be scarred. In many rape cases, the defense will say that the victim was fantasizing the
rape or is lying, but sometimes she really is lying (Siegel, 1995, p. 304). Virginia has a two tier
system for sex offenders, violent and non violent. Even though Michaels charge was for the rape
of an adult, he is still considered a violent sexual predator, forever. This means he can t go to
McDonalds, he can t go to see his nieces and nephews, and he couldn t even go to my high school

  • 2. Haunted America By Patricia Nelson Limerick In the essay Haunted America, Patricia Nelson Limerick ponders whether or not there is any benefit for society to have historical knowledge. Limerick contradicts herself numerous times in her opinion on the usefulness of history. She implies that there are many lessons that can be learned from history. However, Limerick is disappointed in the humanrace because it fails to learn from the mistakes of others. She therefore wonders, What do we gain besides a revival and restoration of the misery? (Limerick, 473). Based on Limerick s examination of people and history, one can conclude that objectively history is useless, however, theoretically, people would be much better off if they learned from the lessons that the past presents. To an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Torture, maiming, rape, mutilation, murder all of the worst injuries that human being inflict on each other serve as the capstones to these stories (472). Therefore, history is somewhat detrimental to society because people start viewing each other as cruel, egotistical enemies. When analyzing the Battle of Bad Axe, Limerick wonders what good the memory of such a dreadful event can do. She asks, What good can knowledge of this miserable story do? [...] What exactly does knowledge of this event add to American self understanding and well being? (473). To answer Limerick s question, one might state that objectively, the knowledge of appalling occurrences is futile because people do not learn from the past mistakes. This is evident when comparing the Indian white and the Vietnam wars. The two wars are very similar in that they are both guerrilla war, in which the insider has a greater advantage over the intruder. Limerick writes, The lessons of the Indian white wars and the lessons of the Vietnam war were strikingly similar because they were both the lessons of guerrilla war, the kind of war in which the local, insider knowledge held by natives gave them a great advantage. The invaders, by contrast, were decidedly out of their place (488). Intruders are at a greater disadvantage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. International Students Can Overcome Challenges International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First, they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying at has a very different way of life than theirs. Further more, the laws in that country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international studentin the US studying at ASU, have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations. The first challenge, and in my opinion the most crucial challenge that I had to face was learning the English language, and communicating with different people. Almost every international studentis faced with this challenge; Alberto FernaМЃndez FernaМЃndez said, International students often face adjustment issues impacting their level of satisfaction with their experience. These involve oral language proficiency, as well as feelings of anxiety and isolation resulting from language deficiencies . This challenge was important for me to overcome due to the fact that I am here for the sole purpose to study in an American University, so obviously I am required to learn the language. Likewise, I have to learn how to speak so that I can be able to communicate with other students and professors. I personally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Nourishment In Robinson Crusoe Daniel Defoe s novel Robinson Crusoe reflects the most progressive, democratic ideas of the early Enlightenment. Using the theme of the island, located out of contact with the community, Defoe demonstrates Robinson s life as an example of the intrinsic value of inner freedom in social development and the creation of material and spiritual base of a society. Transferring the early Enlightenment ideas, Defoe shows the way Robinson, former Puritan mystic, comes to the complete concept of the universe. Confessions of a protagonist demonstrate that reasonable Robinson makes this possible after the conquest of nature, which the author describes not as physical development of the island but the cognition of laws of nature and reasons of existence.... While Defoe seems to shift between these two ideas of depiction of the setting, both hardships that stimulate physical work and ideal circumstances for philosophical mental work lead to spiritual transformation of the protagonist. As a result, striving for success of young, driven by the spirit of the time Robinson transforms into the Robinson, who on the Island of Despair overcomes the difficulties with great fortitude and returns home as an entrepreneur. Presented by Defoe, the evolution of the consciousness of Robinson from desperate to optimistic insight gives reason to the Enlightenment educational program of the improvement of a man and a society. Thus, the savage state of Nature in which Man is threatened and challenged is the author s educational experiment, in which Man is self nurtured. An experiment in forming spiritual maturity, moral strength of the personality through the work. While the work is a forced, urgent need to survive on a desert island it does not bother hero as it becomes a remedy for despair. Defoe elevates a physical labor on a spiritual level. What seems punishment at first, the reason tries to look at as blessing. While the initial inner state of the protagonist is the despair, the overcoming many difficulties, the Bible ... • 6. Oryx And Crake Corruption Wherever there is good in the world, there is deemed to be evil. Margaret Atwood established that relationship while writing Oryx and Crake. Oryx, a free spirited loving individual, viewed the best for the world. However, the post apocalyptic present is molded and formed by the immorality of one man: Crake. Told through the eyes of Snowman, the characters of Oryx and Crake represent the good and evilrespectively. In the previous universe of Oryx and Crake, evilness and corruption are strongly present in any direction. However, it was unknown that Crake had a more devious and elaborate plan. Throughout his younger years, Crake questioned the perception of life often asking What is reality? From ChickieNobs, chicken parts with a high growth rate...built in (203), to wolvogs who are bred to deceive (205), the possibilities are endless. From there, Crake went on to develop his Paradise project. At first glance, Crake s main initiative, a single pill named the BlyssPluss that would protect the user against all known sexually transmitted diseases, (294) appeared to be harmless and life changing. However, similar to the other corporations techniques, Creake did not create a cure. He created a fatal disease: a disease to cause the worldwide plague (326). Throughout, Crake foreshadows his grand plan by discussing theoretical scenarios with Jimmy. He becomes obsessed with the idea of how the elimination of one generation could break the link in time between one generation and the next (223). Without a generation of experienced and intelligent individuals, humanity stands no chance on surviving on its own. Afterwards, it is simply game over forever ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Air Canada s Business Strategy Essay Over the years Air Canada s business strategy has changed and has been reconstructed a number of times. Air Canada s mission has always remained the same, connecting Canada and world (Air Canada, 2016), but their visions and goals, have transformed. Air Canada s early strategy was to grow the business, with minimal concern about their staff members and customers. Without any benefits or rewards their staff felt underappreciated. Their customers felt as though their feedback wasn t being heard but in the eyes of Air Canada as long as their business was expanding, they were satisfied. This was evident with the purchase of Canadian Airlines, in 1999 (The National, 2003). With the purchase of this airline, Air Canada also inherited their estimated eight billion dollar debt (The National, 2003). Also inherited from the merger, were underappreciated employees and under trained employees who lacked morale (The National, 2003). In 2003, Air Canada filed for bankruptcy (The National, 2003), this was due to the large financial deficit, the economy and the underappreciated/paid employees. Although, this was a difficult time for the airline, this truly marked the change in how the airline is structured. In 2005, it marked the true return of Air Canada, they reached record breaking revenues and far exceeded anyone s expectation, including their own. Currently Air Canada, is the largest Canadian Airline, which has a lot to do with their change in business strategy. Air Canada is now an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Andrew Jackson s Colorful Military Career The seventh president of the United States had a colorful military career before he became Commander in Chief. Andrew Jackson, born 1767 in South Carolina, was a prisoner of war during War of Independence; his treatment resulting in a lifelong dislike of Great Britain, ( Andrew Jackson n.d.). After the British captured the belligerent Jackson, he was ordered to clean a British officer s boots. When he refused, the officer drew his sword and slashed Jackson s hand to the bone, (Patrick, n.d.). This memorable treatment by the British inspired Jackson to take up arms against the British in the War of 1812. It also helped to foment Jackson s political ideologies that were staunchly anti federalist. In addition to his encounters with the British during the Revolutionary War, Jackson was notorious for having indulged in many a duel, including one in which he killed Charles Dickenson (Patrick, n.d.). Jackson s early military career consists mainly of his involvement in the War of 1812, followed by the Creek War in 1813 1814, and then culminating in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. This string of military victories for Jackson was later supplemented by brutal victories in the First Seminole War in 1818. Having had a meager role to play in the War of 1812, Jackson hungered for glory and led the West TennesseeMilitia in the Creek War of 1813 1814. This led to promotions for Jackson. Abortion, which is a deliberate termination of pregnancy, is one of the most important practical applications of that issue. Life on Earth is threatened with destruction from overpopulation and the poverty that overpopulation causes. Fortunately, abortion can prevent overpopulation. The question about whether abortion shouldbe done is primarily the question about whether the embryo or fetus is a person. In most cases, the embryo weighs less than 100grams: less than 10% of human brain. Abortion should be legal since it is useful and since humans become conscious after birth, not before. Practical Effects of Abortion The world has a problem of overpopulation, not under population. The environmental problems occur largely because too many people exist and strain the natural resources. Thus, not creating an extra person is on average good for the society. (If creating a person would on average be good, then more people should be created, and the population size is too small, not too large.) In abortion, when a mother chooses not to create a person, the person is unwanted and thus probably should not be created. Much of the poverty found throughout the world is caused by having too many children. Abortion prevents that and thus reduces poverty. Poverty contributes to crime. Therefore, abortion reduces crime. Unfortunately, the government in the USA does not support abortion for poor people. A serious defect in an embryo gives additional reasons for its termination. For example, Down syndrome is a severe congenital disorder that is a major cause of mental retardation, worldwide. (Cozic 138) Fortunately, fetal testing (with abortion) can prevent it. • 14. Cilia Function Cilia are organelles protruding from body cells, consisting of microtubules. These structures are important for hemostasis and cell development. Along with a group of proteins called kinesins superfamily proteins (KSFs), the cilia also play an important role in SHH signaling. The proteins found in this family serve a variety of functions relating to microtubule regulation, such as KIF4A and KIF21A. KIF4A controls microtubule length during celldivision, whereas KIF21A inhibits microtubule growth at the cell cortex. A prominent member of this family is the proteinKIF7, a homologue of the protein Costal2 (Cos2) found in Drosophila and zebrafish. Both serve relatively similar functions with relation to the Hh signaling pathway, though there... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The level of activity of Gli genes, and thus Hh pathway activation, determines skin tumor phenotype: high level signaling is shown to result in BCC and low level signaling is shown to result in follicular derived tumors such as basaloid follicular hamartoma (BFH) (2). Gli2 is involved in the expression of cell cycle regulation genes in the Shh pathway such as E2F1, CCND1, CDC2 and epidermal differential genes. Over expression of Gli2 causes the up regulation of such cell cycle regulation genes in developing hair follicles. Shh activation most specifically promotes degradation of the p53 tumor suppressor gene (2), thus repressing transcription of p21, a key suppressor of cyclin E in cell cycle regulation. Thus, G1 arrest is overrode, and the inability to control cell cycle is promoted: a key feature of cancer. Sufu and Kif7 have overlapping functions in regulating Gli transcription factors. Specifically, Gli2 forms a complex with Sufu to prevent transcriptional activity via preventing accumulation of Gli2 transcriptional factors into the nucleus, thus repressing Hh pathway transduction (3). Sufu also plays a role in stabilizing Gli2 by blocking Spop, an E3 ligase involved in degradation of Gli2 (3). In keratinocytes, Kif7 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Analysis Of The Poem Anastrophe Elegy By Rebecca Foust The poem Anastrophe Elegy by Rebecca Foust tells the story of a woman who falls madly in love with a man. This woman, was the it girl she was talented, smart, beautiful, and athletic. She had many different roles in peoples lives such as girlfriend, wife, mother, friend, coach and many more. However, she met a man whom she falls in lovewith. As a result of love she gives her all to him. She went above and beyond for this man giving up much of herself to make sure he was happy. After spending much of her time and money for the man she loved, he ups and leaves her. When the love of her life left, he not only left with himself but he left with a part of her. The persona says that the woman was not the same after he left. Throughout the poem there is a sense of grief brought on from this tragic relationship and the unwarranted results of the relationship. Although the woman in the story did not die, her spirit did die when the love of her life left. Therefore, the theme of sadness is shown in this poem through the anastrophe structure, stylechoice of an elegy, and the mood. Firstly, the theme of sadness is presented through the structure of an Anastrophe. When it comes to poetry, the structure it is presented is very important. The structure of a poem can determine the rhythm. Furthermore, it can make a poem sound fast pace, slow, anxious or calm. The structure controls how one may read the poem or even perceive the poem. Direct torque control of induction motor simulation using conventional method and space vector pulse width modulation Naveen chander PG Student Electrical Engineering NITTTR Chandigarh, India snl.naveen@gmail.com Dr. Lini Mathew Associate Professor Electrical Engineering NITTTR Chandigarh, India Dr. S. Chatterji Professor Head Electrical Engineering NITTTR Chandigarh, India Abstract This paper proposes direct torque control of induction motor simulation using conventional method and space vector pulse width modulation technique for ripple reduction. Direct Torque Control is a control technique used in AC drive systems to obtain high performance torque control and thereby controlling the speed of induction motor. The principle is based on simultaneous decoupling of stator flux and electromagnetic torque of AC drive system. DTC drives use hysteresis comparators and they suffer from high torque ripple and variable switching frequency problem. The proposed SVM based DTC reduces torque ripples. The basis of the SVM DTC methodology is the calculation of the required voltage space vector to compensate the flux and torque errors and its generation using the SVM at each sample period. The performance of this method is demonstrated by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software. Simulation results presented in this paper show the torque, flux linkage and stator current ripple decreases with the proposed SVM DTC algorithm. Ultimately a fair and effective punishment must not only prevent future transgressions, but also teach a valuable life lesson. While some punishments may seem standard: a grounding for breaking curfew, a detention for misbehaving in class, a jail sentence for robbery, not all punishments are so cut and dry. Take the case of Casey Heynes. A video which has since gone viral depicts the March 2011 incident. Ritchard Gale, 12, appears to tease and taunt Casey, 15, and unleash a few unretaliated punches. In response, Casey picks Ritchard up, and slams him to the ground. While Ritchard was relatively physically unscathed in the encounter, Casey could have inflicted quite serious damage. It was revealed through family and witness interviews that Casey was indeed provoked, and had suffered bullying at the hands of classmates for years. Regardless, school and societal rules were broken, and consequences must follow. What then, is a fair punishment? Casey Heynes should receive a four day at home suspension. In addition, he should participate in a bullying prevention group at his school and attend a one day anger management course. This represents a fair punishment, as it acts as a reasonable deterrent, allows Casey to demonstrate remorse, and is reflective of both Casey and Ritchard s feelings. This study aims to evaluate cannabis along with training, rehab and knowledge support inside of prisons as a solution to these problems. • 38. A Common Problem Faced By Immigrants Essay Recent happenings around the world have brought the subject of migration to the forefront of everyday conversation. However, the migration phenomenon is not a new one but can be traced as far back as human history itself. In some way, migration can be seen as an innate part of animal behavior and the human experience. Historically, several push and pull factors have forced several groups to move across the globe in the hopes of improving their situations. However, the circumstances surrounding one s migration to a new place differs for each individual. Apart from the political and economic strife of migration to a different country, immigrants and refugees are left with the added struggle of maintaining their social identity, culture, and kinship when acclimating to a new environment. In order to properly explain this topic, I draw on the information from several articles, lectures, films, and interviews I have conducted with close family and friends. A common problem faced by immigrants is social identity. Social identity refers to the need to identify as a member of a group and not merely as an individual. Man is a social being and being able to identify with a group helps in giving a sense of belonging, developing self esteem and a sense of pride. Social identity and sense of self are therefore important to an individual s well being. As a member of a group, every individual performs the role(s) and expectations of that group. Joan of arc said I heard the voice on my right, in the direction of the Church [i.e., the little Church of St. RГ©my near her house], and rarely do I hear it without a light. This light comes from the same side as the voice. It seemed to me a worthy voice, and I believed it was sent to me by God; after I had heard this voice the third time, I knew that it was the voice of an angel. the voice told her to lead the French army against the ... They are often used in literature metaphorically to represent someone or something. A prominent example of birdsymbolism is in the famous play, Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare where Juliet is associated with the dove to represent her purity and innocence. Shakespeare also utilizes bird symbolism in another play, Macbeth, to emphasize how Macbeth changes throughout the play and to foreshadow Duncan s death. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lady Macbeth foreshadows the death of Duncan by saying, The raven himself is hoarse / That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan / Under my battlements (1.5.45 47). Here, Lady Macbeth compares the messenger to a raven , saying that his voice is hoarse . In some cultures, the raven is believed to smell death before the occurrence of death. In deeper context, Lady Macbeth is saying that the voice of the raven is hoarse as a result of mimicking the same words over and over again that imply Duncan s death. Because the raven has the ability to smell death, a conclusion can be made that Duncan s death is inevitable. Another example of foreshadowing through the use of birds is in the conversation between Ross and an old man. The old man says, On Tuesday last / A falcon, towering in her pride of place, / Was by a mousing owl hawk d at and kill d (2.4.14 16). • 55. The Life Of A Registered Sex Offender The Life of a Registered Sex Offender Christina L. Champ State College of Florida Intro to Criminology CCJ 2010 Professor George Ackerman Barry Puett January 26, 2015 Abstract When we hear the phrase, sex offender, we normally feel repulsed. We think of dirty old creepy men. I for one used to do this, I won t lie. This is because people like to rush to judgment. But my opinions changed when I came to the realization that it s not just creepy old men who are sex offenders. I want to talk about them, but not those who are serial rapists or child molesters; they don t deserve to be talked about. I m talking about people who are convicted, whether it s falsely, or unjustly, and have to wear a stamp on their forehead for the rest of their lives saying they are a sex offender. I have an uncle named Michael and he s 29; he ll be 31 in October. In 2006 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, he was convicted of rape. A young woman lied and said he raped her, and now he will forever be scarred. In many rape cases, the defense will say that the victim was fantasizing the rape or is lying, but sometimes she really is lying (Siegel, 1995, p. 304). Virginia has a two tier system for sex offenders, violent and non violent. Even though Michaels charge was for the rape of an adult, he is still considered a violent sexual predator, forever. This means he can t go to McDonalds, he can t go to see his nieces and nephews, and he couldn t even go to my high school graduation two ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
