Death in The Dream of the Rood Essay
Death in The Dream of the Rood The crucifixion of Christ is treated differently within the bodies of
Old English and Middle English literature. The values of each era s society are superimposed on the
descriptions of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Christ is depicted either as the model of the hero,
prevalent in Old English literature, or as the embodiment of love and passion, as found in Showings
by Julian of Norwich.
Old English literature establishes the elements of the heroic code, to which its society ascribed. A man
must live, or die, by his honor. In The Dream of the Rood the crucifixion of Christ is depicted as the
ultimate symbol of heroism, as all mankind bewailed Christ s death and prepared a gilt cross ... Show

21) Julian of Norwich, an anchoress of Saint Julian, received great visions of the crucifixion of Christ,
on what was thought to be her deathbed. According to the Norton Anthology of English Literature,
Sixth Ed., her revelation of these visions, Showings, is colored by her experience and temperament as
an individual woman. Julian s depiction of the crucifixion describes Christ s love for humanity upon
his crucifixion. This I took it for that time that our Lord Jesu of his courteous love would show me the
comfort before the time of my temptation; for me thought it might well be that I should by the
sufferance of God and with his keeping be tempted of fiends before I should die. (Norton Anthology
of English Literature, Sixth Ed., p. 294) His choice to die upon the cross seems to be the necessity for
the salvation of mankind, not as the manifestation of His inimitable honor and glory.
The thanes of the heroic code are bound to their lord by honor. The Dream of the Rood affirms this
powerful obligation as the author writes that when God visits us on judgment day, He will ask who
would stand fast, unafraid, for Him, their real leader: Before his host he will ask where the man is who
in the name of the Lord would taste bitter death as he did on the cross. (Norton Anthology of English
Literature, Sixth Ed., p. 21). In addition, the lord is bound to his men. This ideal is continued within
the chivalry of the Middle Ages. As a passage of Showings tells the

The Negative Effects Of Marijuana
In today s society, Marijuana has become one of the most widespread illegal drugs. It continues to be
the most abused substance among adolescents. By the time these young people graduate from high
school, more than 40 percent of them will have tried marijuana at least once. The main chemical used
in marijuana that causes addiction and creates the emotional high feeling is called
tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. This chemical is known to encourage the release of dopamine, which
stimulates the area of the brain connected with pleasure, the THC in marijuana can cause many
negative side effects later. The younger the youths, the more damaging it could be for them to use the
marijuana drug. This essay will provide five facts from the videos Messing with Heads, Marijuana and

marijuana and psychotic disorders and the reason I disagree with regular marijuana use. Impaired
judgment occurs anytime anyone uses marijuana. It is the same effect as driving a car while
intoxicated. Sometimes the impairment is so bad that the driver is completely out of control as the

In order to assess this impact, it was necessary to add email and voice services to the Profile
Configuration and the server named FTP located in the Washington DC subnet. The graphs below
illustrate the impact of background load on point to point throughput and point to point utilization for
the back_load and no_back_load scenarios. The data in these charts is reflective of using the
predefined Email(heavy) application profile metric. Figure 3 Email Point to Point Throughput
(bits/sec) Figure 4 Email Pont to Point Utilization
It s clear that background load has a significant impact on link throughput and utilization. The
simulation without background loading remains steady and relatively flat with throughput at roughly
2Kbps and link utilization at under 5%. When background load is added, we see a marked upward
trend in utilization and throughput early in the simulation that keeps with our scheme of incrementally
ramping up background load from 19,200 to 32,000 during the first 8 minutes, followed by a less
pronounced continued upward trend over the remainder of the simulation. Link throughput begins to
stabilize at just over 30kbps late in the simulation, while link utilization approaches 50%.
Interestingly, we see a sharp drop in email download response time during the first seconds of both
scenarios even as background load is ramping up at the same time. However, both scenarios flatten out
to a more consistent level as the simulation

Jelly Fish Swarms
One day you decide to go on a boat ride into the ocean. Once you are out you see hundreds of
jellyfish. This can actually happen, it s called a swarm. Jellyfish are very pretty but they can cause lots
of damage. People and business are being affected by swarms of jellyfish but there are ways to control
them. What is a swarm of jellyfish? Jellyfish normally travel in groups called swarms, when these
groups multiply that s when issues arrive. Steve Hay, a plankton ecologist said, Science data shows
that over the past few years there has been an increase in swarms of jellyfish. When these swarms
form they eat tons of larva and fish eggs. There has also been reports of them clogging filters. Beaches

Subway Innovation Report
Subway Innovation Report
Subway is the name of a franchise fast food restaurant that mainly sells sandwiches and salads. It was
founded in 1965 by Fred De Luca and Peter Buck. The corporation that owns the trademarked name of
Subway is Doctor s Associates, Inc. (DAI). The company has over 28,400 franchised units in 87
countries as of September 2007 and is the fastest growing franchise in the world. It is currently the
third largest fast food chain globally after YUM! Brands (34,000 sites) and McDonalds (31,000 sites).

This also leaves chains such as KFC being the late majority and late adopters when placed in to the
diffusion of innovation model as I did with Subway, since most of the day to day business situations
can be seen by franchisees who are very hands on KFC have put them self at a loss by not listening to
their franchisees. Being the late majority and late adopters they represent a group which are slower
and more content to see how the market develops, they want more reassurance about the benefits and
worth of making changes, they can in some cases be very averse to change and have therefore resisted
adopting new techniques in marketing, promotion and development. On the flip side KFC s more
sceptical out look has allowed them to maintain their market position, by being more traditional in
their approach they don t stand risking failure and financial losses which can sometimes occur from
innovation when a lot is invested on research of development which don t then translate in to profits
for the chain.

The first time this theme is revealed in the poem Blackberry Picking is while the author describes the
first blackberry ripens. He recalls, You ate that first one and its flesh was sweet. (Source A.) The
blackberries in this poem represent ones childhood. He compares to the innocence of being a child to
eating blackberries for the first time after they ripen. He uses the first one to represent youthfulness.
He continues, by describing the taste as sweet . This is similar to the innocence of childhood because

Before installing the VPN services, however, a number of things must be taken into consideration. By
evaluating who is using the VPN, the hardware necessary to make good connections, the pros and
cons of differing connection protocols, and evaluating past security problems, setting up the VPN
services becomes a much smoother process. VPN s and Firewalls Anyone who will be accessing the
VPN services should have a firewall in place.Once a VPN connection is established, the client is
essentially able to access information behind the company s firewall, thus creating an access hole.
Therefore, insisting a client use and maintain a firewall is another layer in the security of the VPN
setup. The ease of changing the firewall rules to allow VPN connections should be addressed. Very old
firewalls, either appliance types or software types, may be difficult or impossible to configure to allow
VPN access.A small business may stay with an old firewall for many reasons, one of which might be
the fact that there has been no reason to upgrade in the past. It would be prudent to check the firewall
documentation before becoming enmeshed in the VPN process, only to have it fail for lack of access,
or creating a setup that might be considered insecure. User Considerations When setting up the VPN
server(s) at the main office, who is using the connection and how much access to the internal network,

Vietnamese Culture Vs American Identity
America s storied history of immigration has resulted in their being many different cultures from
across the globe interacting with each other within the same defined boundaries, complicating the
process of identity for many. One such case wherein migrants have a divisive role is along the US
Mexico border. Amongst conservative Americans ― especially White Anglo Saxon Protestants
(WASPs) ― national identity, the introduction of foreign migrants, Mexican immigrants in particular,
threatens their own traditionalistic national identity (Gries 2016, 24). This difference in identity has
resulted in heated conflicts between WASPs and immigrant communities in general. Furthermore, this
conflict has expanded exponentially since the election of President Donald Trump, with many
attempts being made to protect the traditional (and relatively homogeneous) American identity
(Biskupic 2017). Attacking communities of individuals that have immigrated to the USA is not
necessarily an accurate representation of the situation of immigrant communities. Notably, despite
claims made that immigrants are stealing American jobs , there is no factual evidence supporting this
notion. Moreover, there are studies that directly dispute the validity of this claim, for studies show that

Individuality was not stressed but rather the importance of the extended family. I believe that African
Americans suffering through the hardships of slavery strengthened the idea of kinship even further.
The unity of the African culture became strong due to a series of trials and tribulations. The majority
of the slaves were employed in agricultural areas in the South. By the mid 19th century, a large
number of slaves worked in urban areas as well, and about 5% worked in more industrial occupations.
The hours of the slave workers were long. The average life expectancy of African slaves was at least
12% lower than whit Americans in 1850 and the infant mortality rate was 25% higher for slaves.
Oftentimes slave marriages and families dissolved due to separation. This concept is horrible when
you take under consideration that family was the entire basis of African culture. Although frequent
separation occurred slaves were very careful to pass on the surnames of their black family of origin to
their children. Kinship again is an importance in African society. Although the first steps towards in
improvements for African American culture began in the North, social and economic conditions didn t
improve much at all. The racial attitudes of whites were still obvious among the white society. Laws
banning interracial marriage and voting among free blacks accompanied every northern state
emancipation. These laws were supposedly designed to

Teleological Argument
The Teleological Argument, God s Attributes, and Miracles: A Compounded Contradiction
Introduction
Some Abrahamic theists claim that the harmony of the universe is proof of an intelligent designer.
This argument is known as the teleological argument and has evolved from classical philosophy to
modern theology. In addition, subscribers of the Abrahamic religions also hold that God has attributes
that include omniscience, omnipotence, and benevolence. Fundamentally, God is all knowing, all
powerful, and all good. In contrast, God created a perfect universe that is in harmony, but occasionally
practices miracles. Can the teleological argument, miracles, and God s attributes coexist in a rational
universe? This essay s goal is to demonstrate that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One would assume that this final solution would not be attractive to theists, because of the negation of
God s predicates of omnipotence, omniscience, and benevolence. In contrast, some Abrahamic theists
may be satisfied with the reasoning that there cannot be miracles. However, this contradicts
fundamental aspects of their faith. For example, the story of the Virgin Mary is a miracle that is
fundamental to Christian and Muslim faith. According to the story, Mary was selected to be the giver
of birth to God s son, the angel Gabriel delivered the news to her. She was impregnated by the Holy
Spirit and then gave birth to Jesus Christ as a virgin. If a theist is willing to disregard the Virgin Mary
being a virgin, then this may disrupt fundamental aspects of Christian and Muslim faith. Moreover,
this would mean either that Jesus was not the son of God and thus he would not have divine attributes
such as the ability to work miracles, or that Jesus never existed at all. Consequently, Jesus would have
never died for humanity s sins and thus all humans would be damned to hell. Therefore, Abrahamic
theists cannot accept argument (a) without disrupting fundamental aspects of their faith, and argument
(b) demonstrates that God cannot have certain attributes and create

Noise Barriers: White Noise

Erika Howe
Chamberlain College of Nursing
Professor Anthony Young White Noise in Post Partum
Assessment
Hospital noise is more than an annoyance. It disrupts patient sleep, creates spikes in blood pressure,
and hinders wound healing and pain management. The post partum unit at North Fulton Hospital has
installed a traffic light device that reinforces awareness of the need for a quieter atmosphere by
monitoring the noise level and turning from yellow to red as it rises. Even with this added device,
noise consistently gets the worst marks on patient surveys. Noise reduction efforts really gained
momentum recently, when Medicare began basing a portion of hospital reimbursement on quality
measurements including patient ratings of the quality of care (Landro, 2013). Additional measures
need to be put in place in order to improve quality care by reducing distracting noises. White noise

Insanity is when you re in a state of mind that prevents normal perception, behavior or social

Relationship Between Stress And Stress
Experiment Paper Introduction During Adolescence, teenagers and young adults begin to learn to cope
and emotionally self regulate. Now distanced between parents and home, adolescents are forced to
adapt to their new surroundings and psychologically adjust to the new environment. College, provides
a unique opportunity for adolescents to attain an education, and experience new social settings on their
own terms. However, in the process of adapting to a new and unusual environment, their enters a new
variable, and that is stress. According to the studies and research by Andrew Baum stress is : an
emotional reaction or experience accompanied by physical and behavior changes. ( Baum, A,Singer, J.
E. and Baum, C. S. (1981).Stress has a tremendous effect on one s mental, state, ability to self regulate

High levels of stress can lead to tension amongst others, and tension with one s owns emotions which
in turn could be projected on other people. The following paper examines the relationship between the
stress and emotional self regulation on Bard college students, defining self regulation in terms of

Black Men And Public Spaces
Throughout life many people experience similar situations, although they are two different many
different kind of people. The kind of people depends on their personality. Brent Staples is an author
and writer for the New York Times. He gives two simple examples of two different people in his

Black Men in Public Spaces and Parallel Time show how two black men have been stereotyped. Brent
Staples on Black Men in public spaces recited that My first victim was a woman white, well dressed,
probably in her early twenties. I came upon her late one evening on a deserted street in Hyde Park, a
relatively affluent neighbourhood in an otherwise mean, impoverished section of Chicago. As I swung

and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pocket of bulky military jacket seemed menacingly
close. After a few more quick glimpses, she picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest.
Within second she disappeared into cross street (132). The author clarified that the woman misjudged
the black man, because he was black, and the way he looked like. The same happened with the main

being a part of their child s daily life or worry excessively about their child s safety and well being.
Ever since this theme was discussed in class I reflected on it and thought of my two sets of
grandparents and how each of them had handled this situation, decades ago, in contrasting ways. It is a
well known fact that although Empty nest syndrome can affect both parents, mothers are more
susceptible. My paternal grandmother was a totally devoted mother of two sons. When both her sons
moved to different cities for higher studies, she was devastated. She was so accustomed to spending a
lot of time with them for the first eighteen years of their lives that when they departed she was
overwhelmed with loneliness and a sense of loss. Her children were the focus of her life and without
them she felt worthless. My grandfather too was sad and with only two of them at home, they both

Parents should accept this stage as a way of life and convert a perceived loss into an opportunity.
Focusing on some of the positive changes resulting from their children moving out can ease the sense

to rekindle their interests, their friendships and a time to widen their horizons. They should

Understanding Weaknesses Of The Four Day Workweek
Understanding Weaknesses of the Four Day Workweek
Four day workweek, like the name suggests, calls for replacing the five eight hour days with four ten
hour days without changes in hourly earnings or weekly earnings. Therefore, the same number of
hours of work and leisure are provided at the same earnings. The concept of a compressed workweek
is not new, even if it is not the norm for most jobs. Proposals to reduce weekly hours of work, a major
concern of American labor in the early years of century, are again a serious concern to many people.
The 2008 National Study of Employers, released by the Families and Work Institute, found that 38
percent of US firms allow a compressed workweek for some employees. Eight percent permit it for all
or most employees (Gardner). When a growing number of employers are considering converting to a
compressed four day workweek, it is important to understand positives and negatives of the new work
schedule, to analyze a specific example of company that have failed in converting to the new policy,
and to understand additional factors to consider before the implementation of the new policy.
An advantage brought to employers is that the four day workweek helps companies save money
incurred on daily operation. When employees cram 40 hours of work into four days, companies can
save energy bills by closing for an extra one day per week. For example, in 2009, Utah became the
first state to institute an official four day workweek for all state

William Blake Essay
William Blake
The poet, painter and engraver, William Blake was born in 1757, to a London haberdasher. Blake s
only formal education was in art. At the age of ten, he entered a drawing school and then at the age of
fourteen, he apprenticed to an engraver. ( Abrams Stillinger 18). Although, much of Blake s time was
spent studying art, he enjoyed reading and soon began to write poetry. Blake s first book of poems,
Poetical Sketches, showed his dissatisfaction with the reigning poetic tradition and his restless quest
for new forms and techniques ( Abrams Stillinger 19). Poetical Sketches, was followed by many other
works including, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience. These series were accompanied by
etchings, which depict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The people of this time thought that God was above the world and independent of the material
universe. They looked at humans as being flawed and weak based on the story of Adam and Eve. The
Romantic period contrasted the beliefs of the 18 th century. Romanticism stressed strong emotion,
imagination, freedom from classical correctness in art forms and rebellion against social conventions
(Romanticism 1). The main goal of the Romantics was to bring what they thought was a dead universe
back to life and to add feeling. In addition, the Romantics saw the importance in writing poetry, which
would express their beliefs and attitudes.
The attitudes of the Romantics were a deepened appreciation of the beauties of nature, a general
exaltation of emotion over reason and of the senses over intellect (Romanticism 1). The Romantics
took their own feelings and brought them to life in their poetry. Traditional beliefs or formal rules of
poetry no longer governed them. The Romantics not only held a greater ability to express themselves
but they also possessed a greater sensitivity and a sense of optimism, which is prevalent in their work.
Blake was one of the foremost poets in the Romantic Era. Blake valued the unattainable as much as
the other poets of his time did. The main goal, although impossible to attain was, the Ideal, a state in
which a perfect union between nature and human comprehension was accomplished ( Marcotte 16).

Influential Theorists
It is important for teachers to know about learning theories and influential theorists as it adds to the
quality of their teaching and contributes to their ability to cater to the individual needs of the children
within their classroom. According to Woolfolk Margetts (2013) the quality of teaching can make a
difference to children s lives therefore it is imperative that teachers develop their pedagogical
knowledge of learning theories and influential theorists so they can become an effective teacher. Each
child is influence by socio cultural factors and will have their own way of learning. A teacher with an

Homelessness And Its Effects On Society
It s time to declare a war on homelessness, which is evolving into a crisis, proclaimed Mayor Kirk
Caldwell in The Honolulu Star Advertiser. (Katel, 841 864) Homelessness has become a widely
known issue in the United States. Many people today are living in the streets without a source of food,
water, or a place to sleep at night. Some who are among the homeless include the elderly, children,
and those who are mentally ill. This is a cause for concern for citizens who are living their daily lives.
Some people express their fear of homeless persons, believing that they are just beggars for money
and take up space on the streets. Although the description homeless people is not always true,
homelessness does affect society and puts the future generation at risk of becoming homeless as well.
People need to bring attention to the homeless problem across the United States so action can be taken
and change will take place.
Homelessness can be divided into two groups: people who are homeless, and those who are
chronically homeless. According to The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD),
homelessness includes those who are living in dwellings unfit for human habitation, in emergency
shelters or temporary housing, and/or leaving such a place. (Katel, 841 864) On the other hand, those
who are considered chronically homeless are usually homeless for one or more years and have a
disability or some kind of addiction. Today, homelessness is not a new issue America is

Research Paper On Materialistic Society
Our Materialistic Society
The term materialism is known as a philosophy, and also an issue in our society. By definition,
materialism is the theory or attitude that physical well being and worldly possessions constitute the
greatest good and highest value in life (Khan). This means that our society has a tendency to consider
material items or money as more important than our spiritual values. Since youth, children have
thought that having more stuff, or better stuff, is happiness. Everyone always wants to buy the latest
device, or the newest trends, when they don t really need it. According to DeAngelis, Compared with

Delaney was more a part of the community, and had more friends who maybe felt the same way about
the things he did, he might have had more of a status in the meeting, but Delaney is like wallpaper. He
doesn t want to be invisible; he just wants to blend in with the rest of the world. Delaney s racism has
only escalated from the beginning of the novel to the end of part one, so one could surmise his
problem will only become worse. He puts up a front of this perfect person who has no flaws, and is
just a simple man a Moss backer . He will most likely have another encounter with a Mexican, and
that would bring out his anger towards them even more. Delaney could start to realize from the
meeting that if he became involved with the community, he could have more of a place in Arroyo
Blanco Estates. If he does that, he might see that he doesn t have to just blend in; he can have an

Andrew Carnegie rose from a bobbin boy in a textile factory to become one of the richest men in
America. In the late 19th century, Andrew Carnegie was known as one of the wealthiest Scottish
American industrialist who basically ran the American steel industry in the late 19th century. Some
people believe that Andrew Carnegie was a philanthropist automatically means he s a Captain of
Industry. However Andrew Carnegie was a robber baron, and was wealthy for that exact reason.
In such manner, Andrew Carnegie treated his workers as such a robber baron would, which is poorly

However, this is inaccurate because he had treated his workers like they were nothing, even putting

Yes, the men call this the deathtrap he repeated my guide; ... they wipe a man out here every little
while.... Sometimes a chain breaks, and a ladle tip over; and the iron explodes like that.... Sometimes
the slag falls on the workmen from the roadway up there (Page 357). He fools other people with his

conditions and pay them not enough for it. He doesn t help his workers enough with the wages and

A man watches out, why, all right! But you take it after they ve been on duty for twelve hours without
sleep, and running like hell, everybody tired and logy and it s a different story (Page 357). Andrew
Carnegie was someone who put his workers in the kind of danger that any day one of the workers can

The Process Of Ancient Egyptian Embalming
Ancient Egyptian embalming was a very sacred process performed by experienced embalmers.
Ancient Egyptians used to bury the deceased underground, but because of that they decayed faster in a
coffin when they aren t exposed to the hot sand of the desert. That is how they developed the process
of embalming to preserve the bodies. The process begins where the body is taken into an ibu , a tent
also known as the place of purification . That is where the embalmers wash the body in palm wine and
rinse it off with water from the Nile. The next step is when one of the men makes a small cut in the
left side of the body and removes the liver, lungs, stomach and also intestines. It is important to
remove these internal organs because they are one of the fastest to decompose. These internal organs
are then washed and packed in natron, a mineral salt that contains hydrated sodium carbonate. The
natron will dry out the organs. The heart is not taken out because Egyptians believed that the heart was
the center of intelligence and feeling and the body will need it in the afterlife. Then, a long hook is
inserted into the nose to smash the brain and pull it out the same way. The body will now be covered
and stuffed with natron to dry it out. All of the rags and fluids that were used in the process are buried
with the body. After forty more days, the body is then washed again and covered in oils to keep the
skin elastic. The organs that are dehydrated are wrapped in linen then returned to

because Arjun s father gave Billy and I a play by play of sorts as we were in the rear of the room and

Pros And Cons Of The Postzygotic Barrier Of Species
What defines a species is a very difficult question to answer. Variations are everywhere, but at some
point those variations grow to where the species are different. Two common problems come up when
looking at what makes a species a species. The first is what to do with hybrids and when are they
considered a different species. The second is the issue of asexual reproduction. There are many
different definitions of the word species and they all have their pros and cons when it comes to
addressing these issues and describing what makes a species distinct from another species. One of the
most common definitions for species is the following, a group of populations whose members have
the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring but do not produce viable,
fertile offspring with members of other groups. This definition makes sense when one thinks that a
monkey cannot mate with a cat. The creation of viable and fertile offspring depends on the avoidance
of both prezygotic and postzygotic barriers that put a stop to it. Prezygotic barriers refer to barriers
that happen before creation of the zygote including habitat, temporal, behavioral, mechanical, and
gametic isolation. All of these factors prevent successful mating. Postzygotic barriers happen after an
offspring has been conceived. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon
Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others
characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally
gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them
down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross, both
authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a better
understanding of their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While among
those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly gain a better
understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story , Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair
Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted by his wife and
her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they should stay in the dust
ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an understanding that, She looked forward
to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to make the dust and poverty less real. He understood
suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached
Paul, and how he is able to bypass his wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates
this same idea is The Father by Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool
of himself and his son without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that
his, boy was sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John
Purcell) was ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his
knee and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the
influences of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has
created and is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. The
short stories The Father by Hugh Garner and Lamp At Noon by Sinclair Ross portray how one person
can not only be influenced by

Analysis Of Plato s Socratic Dialogues The Apology And The...
Plato s Socratic dialogues the Apology and the Republic demonstrate the philosopher s public position
and role within the state, albeit in contrasting forms. In this paper, I will argue that philosophy in the
form of the Socratic public benefactor (3d6) presented in the Apology rather than the philosopher king
theorized in the Republic is advantageous for the State to a considerable extent as it leads to greater
accountability and wisdom in decision making.
In his early Socratic dialogue the Apology, Plato presents Socrates philosophical defence of his role
within the Athenian society. Herein, one of Socrates primary defences against the accusations levied
against him is that if the Athenians condemn him to death they won t easily find another like [him]
(Apology, 30e). This bold statement is made in the context of Socrates argument that he is a sort of
gadfly, given to the city [state] by the God; and the state is like a great and noble steed ... [I] am
always fastening upon you, arousing and persuading and reproaching you. (30e) . Hence, Socrates
introduces the notion that he, as a philosopher, serves as a monitor for the state. A role that stimulates
the state, one that facilitates and encourages a cross examination of the decision making. However,
Socrates does recognize and insist that such a figure must be independent from politics and fight for
what s just (32a) in private rather than public. He suggests that had he engaged in politics, he would
have perished long ago . Rationalizing this claim is his argument that if a philosopher as he should
attempts to publicly admonish the state for the many unjust and unlawful actions that occur therein
and prevent them from occurring, he would not be spared by the populace.
Contrastingly, in the middle Socratic dialogue the Republic, Plato introduces through the character of
Socrates the notion of a philosopher king. Standing in stark contrast to Socrates analogy of the gadfly
that remonstrates citizens in private in the Apology, herein Plato contends that Until philosophers rule
as kings ... or kings become genuine ... philosophers ... cities [or states] will have no rest from evils
(Republic, 5e). His rationale is interesting,

In January 1945, German forces attacked Company B, 15th Regiment, 3rd infantry division in

they had planned to seize. The Americans felt unprepared when they discovered the presence of the
German forces, so they decided to fall back. However, Audie Murphy decided to move forward and
fight. He drew a .50 caliber and started shooting Germans as he believed that German advancements
in this area needed to be stopped at all costs. This German infantryman were as close as 10 yards from

Persuasive Essay On Crowdsourcing
Need a photo of yourself turned into anime? Want to analyze your customers signatures to see if they
re crazy? Need help choosing wedding colors? No problem, just post it to Fiverr and let the
community help you out. Would I recommend this for anything that had a substantial impact on your
business? Probably not. But if you need someone to record audio versions of your blog posts and you
re too afraid to do it yourself? Hey, this may be a way to go. Crowdsourcing is a great way to help
move your business forward, while allowing you to pay attention to actually running it. You just want
to remember a few things: 1. You get what you ask for: The better you are about identifying exactly
what you re asking people to do, the better they ll be able to meet your criteria. Always offer more
information than you think they need, not less. Otherwise, you get back something completely
different than what you were hoping for. 2. You get what you pay for: While it s important to make
projects cost effective, don t be a Scrooge and expect someone to do a full day s work for $5. If you re
only paying five dollars, you re only going to get five dollars worth of work. 3. You get what you give:
Designers thrive on feedback and recognition. Make sure you re staying involved and giving them the
feedback they need. How has crowdsourcing worked for your business in the past? Any pleasant
surprises or horror stories you re willing to offer up? I d love to hear them. (Lisa Barone 2010)

  • 2. Death in The Dream of the Rood Essay Death in The Dream of the Rood The crucifixion of Christ is treated differently within the bodies of Old English and Middle English literature. The values of each era s society are superimposed on the descriptions of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Christ is depicted either as the model of the hero, prevalent in Old English literature, or as the embodiment of love and passion, as found in Showings by Julian of Norwich. Old English literature establishes the elements of the heroic code, to which its society ascribed. A man must live, or die, by his honor. In The Dream of the Rood the crucifixion of Christ is depicted as the ultimate symbol of heroism, as all mankind bewailed Christ s death and prepared a gilt cross ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 21) Julian of Norwich, an anchoress of Saint Julian, received great visions of the crucifixion of Christ, on what was thought to be her deathbed. According to the Norton Anthology of English Literature, Sixth Ed., her revelation of these visions, Showings, is colored by her experience and temperament as an individual woman. Julian s depiction of the crucifixion describes Christ s love for humanity upon his crucifixion. This I took it for that time that our Lord Jesu of his courteous love would show me the comfort before the time of my temptation; for me thought it might well be that I should by the sufferance of God and with his keeping be tempted of fiends before I should die. (Norton Anthology of English Literature, Sixth Ed., p. 294) His choice to die upon the cross seems to be the necessity for the salvation of mankind, not as the manifestation of His inimitable honor and glory. The thanes of the heroic code are bound to their lord by honor. The Dream of the Rood affirms this powerful obligation as the author writes that when God visits us on judgment day, He will ask who would stand fast, unafraid, for Him, their real leader: Before his host he will ask where the man is who in the name of the Lord would taste bitter death as he did on the cross. (Norton Anthology of English Literature, Sixth Ed., p. 21). In addition, the lord is bound to his men. This ideal is continued within the chivalry of the Middle Ages. As a passage of Showings tells the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The data in these charts is reflective of using the predefined Email(heavy) application profile metric. Figure 3 Email Point to Point Throughput (bits/sec) Figure 4 Email Pont to Point Utilization It s clear that background load has a significant impact on link throughput and utilization. The simulation without background loading remains steady and relatively flat with throughput at roughly 2Kbps and link utilization at under 5%. When background load is added, we see a marked upward trend in utilization and throughput early in the simulation that keeps with our scheme of incrementally ramping up background load from 19,200 to 32,000 during the first 8 minutes, followed by a less pronounced continued upward trend over the remainder of the simulation. Link throughput begins to stabilize at just over 30kbps late in the simulation, while link utilization approaches 50%. Interestingly, we see a sharp drop in email download response time during the first seconds of both scenarios even as background load is ramping up at the same time. However, both scenarios flatten out to a more consistent level as the simulation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being the late majority and late adopters they represent a group which are slower and more content to see how the market develops, they want more reassurance about the benefits and worth of making changes, they can in some cases be very averse to change and have therefore resisted adopting new techniques in marketing, promotion and development. On the flip side KFC s more sceptical out look has allowed them to maintain their market position, by being more traditional in their approach they don t stand risking failure and financial losses which can sometimes occur from innovation when a lot is invested on research of development which don t then translate in to profits for the chain. By evaluating who is using the VPN, the hardware necessary to make good connections, the pros and cons of differing connection protocols, and evaluating past security problems, setting up the VPN services becomes a much smoother process. VPN s and Firewalls Anyone who will be accessing the VPN services should have a firewall in place.Once a VPN connection is established, the client is essentially able to access information behind the company s firewall, thus creating an access hole. Therefore, insisting a client use and maintain a firewall is another layer in the security of the VPN setup. The ease of changing the firewall rules to allow VPN connections should be addressed. Very old firewalls, either appliance types or software types, may be difficult or impossible to configure to allow VPN access.A small business may stay with an old firewall for many reasons, one of which might be the fact that there has been no reason to upgrade in the past. It would be prudent to check the firewall documentation before becoming enmeshed in the VPN process, only to have it fail for lack of access, or creating a setup that might be considered insecure. • 10. Vietnamese Culture Vs American Identity America s storied history of immigration has resulted in their being many different cultures from across the globe interacting with each other within the same defined boundaries, complicating the process of identity for many. One such case wherein migrants have a divisive role is along the US Mexico border. Amongst conservative Americans ― especially White Anglo Saxon Protestants (WASPs) ― national identity, the introduction of foreign migrants, Mexican immigrants in particular, threatens their own traditionalistic national identity (Gries 2016, 24). This difference in identity has resulted in heated conflicts between WASPs and immigrant communities in general. Furthermore, this conflict has expanded exponentially since the election of President Donald Trump, with many attempts being made to protect the traditional (and relatively homogeneous) American identity (Biskupic 2017). Attacking communities of individuals that have immigrated to the USA is not necessarily an accurate representation of the situation of immigrant communities. Notably, despite claims made that immigrants are stealing American jobs , there is no factual evidence supporting this notion. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Individuality was not stressed but rather the importance of the extended family. I believe that African Americans suffering through the hardships of slavery strengthened the idea of kinship even further. The unity of the African culture became strong due to a series of trials and tribulations. The majority of the slaves were employed in agricultural areas in the South. By the mid 19th century, a large number of slaves worked in urban areas as well, and about 5% worked in more industrial occupations. The hours of the slave workers were long. The average life expectancy of African slaves was at least 12% lower than whit Americans in 1850 and the infant mortality rate was 25% higher for slaves. Oftentimes slave marriages and families dissolved due to separation. This concept is horrible when you take under consideration that family was the entire basis of African culture. Although frequent separation occurred slaves were very careful to pass on the surnames of their black family of origin to their children. Kinship again is an importance in African society. Although the first steps towards in improvements for African American culture began in the North, social and economic conditions didn t improve much at all. The racial attitudes of whites were still obvious among the white society. Laws banning interracial marriage and voting among free blacks accompanied every northern state emancipation. • 13. Teleological Argument The Teleological Argument, God s Attributes, and Miracles: A Compounded Contradiction Introduction Some Abrahamic theists claim that the harmony of the universe is proof of an intelligent designer. This argument is known as the teleological argument and has evolved from classical philosophy to modern theology. In addition, subscribers of the Abrahamic religions also hold that God has attributes that include omniscience, omnipotence, and benevolence. Fundamentally, God is all knowing, all powerful, and all good. In contrast, God created a perfect universe that is in harmony, but occasionally practices miracles. Can the teleological argument, miracles, and God s attributes coexist in a rational universe? This essay s goal is to demonstrate that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One would assume that this final solution would not be attractive to theists, because of the negation of God s predicates of omnipotence, omniscience, and benevolence. In contrast, some Abrahamic theists may be satisfied with the reasoning that there cannot be miracles. However, this contradicts fundamental aspects of their faith. For example, the story of the Virgin Mary is a miracle that is fundamental to Christian and Muslim faith. According to the story, Mary was selected to be the giver of birth to God s son, the angel Gabriel delivered the news to her. She was impregnated by the Holy Spirit and then gave birth to Jesus Christ as a virgin. If a theist is willing to disregard the Virgin Mary being a virgin, then this may disrupt fundamental aspects of Christian and Muslim faith. Moreover, this would mean either that Jesus was not the son of God and thus he would not have divine attributes such as the ability to work miracles, or that Jesus never existed at all. Consequently, Jesus would have never died for humanity s sins and thus all humans would be damned to hell. Therefore, Abrahamic theists cannot accept argument (a) without disrupting fundamental aspects of their faith, and argument (b) demonstrates that God cannot have certain attributes and create ... Empty nest syndrome is a phenomenon in which parents are grief stricken when their children leave their childhood home. This may happen when the children move out to study, to live on their own or to get married. Most parents are overcome by a feeling of isolation and redundancy. They may miss being a part of their child s daily life or worry excessively about their child s safety and well being. Ever since this theme was discussed in class I reflected on it and thought of my two sets of grandparents and how each of them had handled this situation, decades ago, in contrasting ways. It is a well known fact that although Empty nest syndrome can affect both parents, mothers are more susceptible. My paternal grandmother was a totally devoted mother of two sons. • 21. Understanding Weaknesses Of The Four Day Workweek Understanding Weaknesses of the Four Day Workweek Four day workweek, like the name suggests, calls for replacing the five eight hour days with four ten hour days without changes in hourly earnings or weekly earnings. Therefore, the same number of hours of work and leisure are provided at the same earnings. The concept of a compressed workweek is not new, even if it is not the norm for most jobs. Proposals to reduce weekly hours of work, a major concern of American labor in the early years of century, are again a serious concern to many people. The 2008 National Study of Employers, released by the Families and Work Institute, found that 38 percent of US firms allow a compressed workweek for some employees. Eight percent permit it for all or most employees (Gardner). When a growing number of employers are considering converting to a compressed four day workweek, it is important to understand positives and negatives of the new work schedule, to analyze a specific example of company that have failed in converting to the new policy, and to understand additional factors to consider before the implementation of the new policy. An advantage brought to employers is that the four day workweek helps companies save money incurred on daily operation. When employees cram 40 hours of work into four days, companies can save energy bills by closing for an extra one day per week. The main goal of the Romantics was to bring what they thought was a dead universe back to life and to add feeling. In addition, the Romantics saw the importance in writing poetry, which would express their beliefs and attitudes. The attitudes of the Romantics were a deepened appreciation of the beauties of nature, a general exaltation of emotion over reason and of the senses over intellect (Romanticism 1). Ancient Egyptians used to bury the deceased underground, but because of that they decayed faster in a coffin when they aren t exposed to the hot sand of the desert. That is how they developed the process of embalming to preserve the bodies. The process begins where the body is taken into an ibu , a tent also known as the place of purification . That is where the embalmers wash the body in palm wine and rinse it off with water from the Nile. The next step is when one of the men makes a small cut in the left side of the body and removes the liver, lungs, stomach and also intestines. It is important to remove these internal organs because they are one of the fastest to decompose. The heart is not taken out because Egyptians believed that the heart was the center of intelligence and feeling and the body will need it in the afterlife. Then, a long hook is inserted into the nose to smash the brain and pull it out the same way. The body will now be covered and stuffed with natron to dry it out. Variations are everywhere, but at some point those variations grow to where the species are different. Two common problems come up when looking at what makes a species a species. The first is what to do with hybrids and when are they considered a different species. The second is the issue of asexual reproduction. There are many different definitions of the word species and they all have their pros and cons when it comes to addressing these issues and describing what makes a species distinct from another species. One of the most common definitions for species is the following, a group of populations whose members have the potential to interbreed in nature and produce viable, fertile offspring but do not produce viable, fertile offspring with members of other groups. This definition makes sense when one thinks that a monkey cannot mate with a cat. The creation of viable and fertile offspring depends on the avoidance of both prezygotic and postzygotic barriers that put a stop to it. Summary Of The Short Story OfThe Father And Lamp At Noon Throughout years within society, people have grown accustomed to latching on to others characteristics and gradually learning from them. Regardless of the situation, people will naturally gravitate toward those with traits they favor and try to recognize their own values that bring them down. In the short stories of The Father , by Hugh Garner, and Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross, both authors clearly exemplify how one person can be influenced by another, while then creating a better understanding of their own faults and amending themselves from those negative traits. While among those close to them, people tend to become influenced by those same people and slowly gain a better understanding of their traits and motivations. Consider the short story , Lamp At Noon , by Sinclair Ross. Paul, who had faith, dreams, and plans all invested into his farm is confronted by his wife and her aspirations for the family. After an argument with her over whether they should stay in the dust ridden farm or start a new in the city, Paul finally comes to an understanding that, She looked forward to no future. She had no faith or dream in which to make the dust and poverty less real. He understood suddenly (Ross 8). From this context, the reader is able to visualize how Ellen s words have reached Paul, and how he is able to bypass his wants and understand hers. Another short story that illustrates this same idea is The Father by Hugh Garner. The character of John Purcell profoundly makes a fool of himself and his son without even realizing the damage of his actions, and as a result, he see s that his, boy was sobbing silently, his thin shoulders shuddering beneath his blazer. Suddenly he (John Purcell) was ashamed by the enormity of his act, and had to prevent himself from taking his son on his knee and comforting him as he had done when the boy was younger (Garner 75). Due to the influences of his son s attitude toward the situation, John comes to his senses on the scene he has created and is able to understand his son s embarrassment and shame that he s brought upon him. The short stories The Father by Hugh Garner and Lamp At Noon by Sinclair Ross portray how one person can not only be influenced by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Analysis Of Plato s Socratic Dialogues The Apology And The... Plato s Socratic dialogues the Apology and the Republic demonstrate the philosopher s public position and role within the state, albeit in contrasting forms. In this paper, I will argue that philosophy in the form of the Socratic public benefactor (3d6) presented in the Apology rather than the philosopher king theorized in the Republic is advantageous for the State to a considerable extent as it leads to greater accountability and wisdom in decision making. In his early Socratic dialogue the Apology, Plato presents Socrates philosophical defence of his role within the Athenian society. Herein, one of Socrates primary defences against the accusations levied against him is that if the Athenians condemn him to death they won t easily find another like [him] (Apology, 30e). This bold statement is made in the context of Socrates argument that he is a sort of gadfly, given to the city [state] by the God; and the state is like a great and noble steed ... [I] am always fastening upon you, arousing and persuading and reproaching you. (30e) . Hence, Socrates introduces the notion that he, as a philosopher, serves as a monitor for the state. A role that stimulates the state, one that facilitates and encourages a cross examination of the decision making. However, Socrates does recognize and insist that such a figure must be independent from politics and fight for what s just (32a) in private rather than public. He suggests that had he engaged in politics, he would have perished long ago . Rationalizing this claim is his argument that if a philosopher as he should attempts to publicly admonish the state for the many unjust and unlawful actions that occur therein and prevent them from occurring, he would not be spared by the populace. Contrastingly, in the middle Socratic dialogue the Republic, Plato introduces through the character of Socrates the notion of a philosopher king. Standing in stark contrast to Socrates analogy of the gadfly that remonstrates citizens in private in the Apology, herein Plato contends that Until philosophers rule as kings ... or kings become genuine ... philosophers ... cities [or states] will have no rest from evils (Republic, 5e). His rationale is interesting, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Persuasive Essay On Crowdsourcing Need a photo of yourself turned into anime? Want to analyze your customers signatures to see if they re crazy? Need help choosing wedding colors? No problem, just post it to Fiverr and let the community help you out. Would I recommend this for anything that had a substantial impact on your business? Probably not. But if you need someone to record audio versions of your blog posts and you re too afraid to do it yourself? Hey, this may be a way to go. Crowdsourcing is a great way to help move your business forward, while allowing you to pay attention to actually running it. You just want to remember a few things: 1. You get what you ask for: The better you are about identifying exactly what you re asking people to do, the better they ll be able to meet your criteria. Always offer more information than you think they need, not less. Otherwise, you get back something completely different than what you were hoping for. 2. You get what you pay for: While it s important to make projects cost effective, don t be a Scrooge and expect someone to do a full day s work for $5. If you re only paying five dollars, you re only going to get five dollars worth of work. 3. You get what you give: Designers thrive on feedback and recognition. Make sure you re staying involved and giving them the feedback they need. How has crowdsourcing worked for your business in the past? Any pleasant surprises or horror stories you re willing to offer up? I d love to hear them. (Lisa Barone 2010) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
