This document discusses sediment fingerprinting, a method used to determine the sources of sediment in bodies of water. It has emerged as a valuable tool to supplement traditional monitoring techniques, which have limitations. However, sediment fingerprinting also faces challenges, including uncertainties in its methodological procedures. The review identifies key steps in the sediment fingerprinting process and discusses existing issues that hamper the current approaches. Determining sediment sources is important for effective erosion control but difficult without these fingerprinting methods.
