18. SOME INPUT RECD FROM INDUSTRY
NEWS AND BASED ON TECHNICAL
KNOWLEDGE
19. SOME FACTS ARE REQUIRED TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE IN PETROL AND DIESEL VERSION
Petrol car has a higher pick up, but with CRDI, diesel has come close
Many of us are confused when buying a new car as to which one to go for, a petrol car
or a diesel car. Those who have used both at one point of time or another have their own
preferences depending upon driving experience. There was a time when diesel cars were
scoffed at, because of their poor performance but times have changed and with
advancement in technology, and the introduction of the new CRDI engines, Diesel cars
are an attractive option for those going to buy a new car. There are still differences
between the two types of cars, and here is a comparison that will keep you in good stead
while choosing one for you.
Fuel efficiency of petrol cars is much less as compared to diesel cars.
Diesel produces more energy per unit of fuel and this is why vehicles with a higher
power rating such as trucks and buses run on diesel only. Thermal efficiency of
diesel makes it better suited for heavy vehicles.
Modern cars are designed to obey your commands. The more pressure you put on
accelerator, the more fuel is injected in the engine to burn for more power. With
petrol, this is naturally done, while in case of diesel, there is a slight time lag and you
feel that you are not getting as much power as you need. But with recent innovation
called Common Rail Diesel Engine (CRDI), diesel cars are also turbo now and thus
running neck to neck with petrol cars.
Diesel cars have a higher torque than petrol cars. This makes maneuvering a diesel
car easier than petrol car when driving uphill and it takes lesser effort because of
higher torque generated.
20. INDUSTRY NEWS SHOW THE PEOPLE’S TILT TOWARDS DIESEL WAGON
25 May, 2012: Maruti Swift emerged as the top selling car in Indian automobile market in
April, 2012. The sales of this premier hatchback outpaced highest selling model Maruti
Alto in April, thanks to the diesel variants of Swift. 19,484 units of Maruti Swift were sold
in April as compared to 17,842 units of Alto. Although Maruti Swift diesel price ranges
from Rs 5.53 lakh to Rs 6.76 lakh (ex showroom Delhi) which is much ahead of entry level
Maruti car-Alto, people preferred former over petrol powered Alto. The extraordinary gap
between petrol and diesel price (Rs 30/Litre currently) has resulted in this outpacing
activity where Swift has dethroned 7 years champion Alto. The grip of latter is expected to
lose with time with people’s tilt towards diesel wagons
21. ARAI-REPORT VALIDATESON MILEAGE OF TOP SELLING MODEL IN INDIA
The all new Maruti Suzuki Swift is offered in both, petrol and diesel variants. The petrol version
is packed with a 1.2-litre K series engine with a displacement of 1198cc. The engine is highly fuel
efficient with the presence of VVT (variable Valve Timing) that allows the engine to breathe
better, offer optimum performance, and also enhance fuel economy. Furthermore, the
powertrain is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission gearbox. Maruti Suzuki Swift’s powerful
engine is compliant with the BS IV emission standards and delivers an impressive mileage of
18.6kmpl as per ARAI test cycle. The new Swift is 4 per cent more fuel efficient than the
outgoing model.
The diesel version of Maruti Suzuki Swift is powered by 1.3-litre DDiS engine with a
displacement of 1248cc. It is equipped with a combination of a turbocharger and
intercooler, which offers efficient combustion, while the DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft)
ensures proper valve opening that accumulatively make this engine very frugal. The advanced
DDiS (Direct Diesel Injection System), which is a patented version of CRDi (Common Rail Direct
Injection), also helps it achieve maximum fuel economy. The diesel engine offers a mileage of
22.9kmpl as per ARAI. But the new Swift diesel is 6 per cent more fuel efficient than the
outgoing Swift.
22. Top 10 popular and best selling mid sized cars in India-Rank 1st Maruti Swift Dzire
Maruti Suzuki pleased every middle-class Indian when it introduced the Swift Dzire,. A new
front bumper with a wider smile, shorter boot (just 145mm longer than the Swift) and new
tail lamps with chrome accent adds extra bling to the Dzire.
The low-cost sedan specifically meant for fleet owners is offered in petrol and diesel version.
4 petrol and 3 diesel variants are rolled out in its fleet namely LXi, VXi, VXi AT, ZXi, LDi, VDi and
ZDi.
Maruti has managed to pull off an amazing feat by keeping the kerb weight the same as the
award winning Swift. The space for rear seats has been increased considerably seeing the
longer wheelbase which makes it sweet.
The rally based suspension system to impress the consumers of the spirited drive the car is
capable of travelling smoothly down the tipsy curvy roads seamlessly challenging the hurdles
like the speed bumps without spoiling the overall balance of the car.
In terms of fuel economy, customer satisfaction, looks, road presence and performance, the
company has indeed delivered with Dzire. Both the models are priced at Rs 4.88 lacs and Rs
5.91 lacs.
23. Diesel cars take advantage in customer satisfaction survey
Diesel cars dominated the customer satisfaction survey conducted by market
information provider TNS. According to the survey new launches and technical
upgrades have helped diesel cars to show their performance and take advantage
in their total customer satisfaction (TCS).
“The two diesel segments–small and midsize–show remarkable improvement on
practically all aspects, which says a lot about the improved performance of diesel
cars,” said TNS Automotive senior V-P Pradeep Saxena. “They have done well not
just because of the ‘low cost of ownership’. In fact, the satisfaction with
‘performance & design’ and ‘Quality’ is even higher,” he added.
In the small car category, Suzuki’s Swift diesel was on top with a score of 96
compared with an industry average of 89. The Tata Indica diesel scored the overall
improvement in the satisfaction scores of the small diesel cars. In the mid-size
diesel segment, the Chevy Optra Magnum was on top followed by Suzuki Swift
Dzire and Mahindra Renault Logan diesel.
