The poem The Widow s Lament in Springtime is a poem about a women who has lost her
husband of thirty five years. Williams writes in the voice of a grieving woman instead of in his
own voice. Now that her husband has died, the widow cannot find joy in her yard that she used to
love. The widow may even be considering suicide. Williams, writing in free verse, writes a
metaphor comparing the grief of a widow to her blooming yard in the springtime setting a tone of
great sadness for the widow.
The title itself gives us important clues about this poem. From the beginning before even
reading the first line of the poem, we know that it will be a sad story. The widow being someone
who has experienced a loss and lament is a word used for passionate grief and sorrow.
Springtime is a time of growth and rebirth, the affirming of new life. Williams title may lead us
to believe that the widow is in the early stages of life without her husband and the early stages of
grief. This may be her first spring without her husband. She is exploring the overwhelming
feelings of grief over losing her husband, comparing her grief to the new life or blooming of her
yard.The widow begins by telling us Sorrow is my own yard (Reed). She, the widow is
comparing the sorrow and grief that she feels with her yard. She takes ownership of her pain in
the phrase my own . Springtime is usually a time of renewal and growth, but for the widow it is a

Wilfred Owen asks where are the ...passing bells for these who die as cattle? The author of
Anthem for Doomed Youth leads his reader through his personal struggle and frustration of war.
Owen has an abrasive approach when describing the death all around him and clearly expresses
his anger with the hasty orisons for the dead. He speaks directly of battlefront in the first octet
and then includes the home front in the second half of his sonnet. Owen s purpose is not a
commemoration of fallen soldiers. Rather, he divulges the disgust and disappointment of war.

In the beginning of the life of one of the most significant female scientist to date, there was
obscurity. Born in Vienna, Austria on November 7th of 1878 during turmoil of war and
persecution that would seem to not cease throughout her life, she was bound to surpass her
limitations as a necessity to prosper the scientific status. Born the third child out of eight in a
Jewish family, she still was not one to go unnoticed or to be persuaded, as a strong minded
individual tends to be. At the time of her birth, her family was fairly wealthy, and though of Jewish
background, did not practice the religious beliefs of the Jewish heritage. This meant that although
she was Austrian in nationality, her ancestors practiced the Jewish way of life, yet it was not as
discernable in Meitner or her direct family. Her mother Hedwig Skovran, a musician, was not well
known but of enough skill to continue the occupation, while her father, Philipp Meitner, was a
lawyer and a master of chess. Her siblings, much like her parents, grew up to be detached from
the Jewish culture, which would lead them towards Christianity during a time of maltreatment of
those of Jewish features or religion. This change of religious beliefs would be reflected in

Do you remember the last time you took a bath? A bath filled with bubbles, perhaps with a
younger sibling? What about the last time you stood in a bath, holding your dead grandmother,
naked as moths came out of her mouth? In the short story The Moths , by Helena Maria
Viramontes, a young Latina misfit granddaughter matures the moment her grandmother dies.
Compared to her relationship with her parents and her siblings, the bond she carried with her
Abuelita was special. She found comfort with her after receiving several whippings, broken her
arm, puberty and even her first lie. (1) She would gladly help her out with her gardening or
cooking, although they hardly spoke, or hardly looked at each other as they worked. Although she
was rebellious and callous, human experience is conveyed through magical realism, exemplifying
the narrator s vulnerability towards her grandmother. The moths first made an appearance as
healing method for the narrator s bull hands , her Abuelita made a balm out of dried mothwings and
Vicks and rubbed [her] hands, shaped them back to size and it was the strangest feeling (3).

me last year, they rang up and said they were having a conference and we would like to invite
you, and I thought I think you have the wrong person. Basically, everybody else there, except
myself and one person from Nova Scotia, were in favour of privatization and very strongly in
favour of it, especially with respect to prisons. It was actually very educational and interesting to

So on the one hand we are surrounded by the phenomenon and on the other hand we don t know
as much about it as we should. Even my own work, I might add, privatization is more or less a
tangent for me as I do other areas of research. I think it is indication that very few people in
Canada, criminologists, are systematically focussing on this but I keep getting roped back into this.

privatization in criminal justice, including myself, mention that it is likely that private companies
will try and influence criminal justice policy in various places. Yet when you look for the empirical
support for this there is very little factual information there. Or we talk a bit about the decline of the
military in industrial conflicts, the end of the Cold War, and new markets opening up for these
companies internationally and we see some of the companies moving from the United States into
Britain, Australia and now also Canada, and we hear things about them moving into Latin American
countries and East European countries, but again this international dimension is one that there has

Recent legal movements and rules are being placed within the practice of maternal mothers with
focus on the protection of the fetus as a separate entity from the woman. These legalities are said to
question the rights of the pregnant woman about her own medical care and decisions. The new
protective actions for the fetuswill enforce criminal charges on women who behave in a way that is
associated with fetal harm or adverse perinatal outcomes. The ethical dilemmas with maternal
