I remember when..It used to be that your main resources wereonly used during a teaching session.before, during and post session.
Why should we care?Help your audience solve their problems of understanding and knowledge

Avoid common problemsLack of understanding of audience to give them resources they cannot interact withThe odd dead link can be forgiven but that’s all really.
Think about your audienceWho are they?
Persona PaddyBackgroundPaddy is in a technical role and it is hisjob to support his colleagues with anything using technology. Goals and motivation Paddy wants support to identify solutionsto common problems. He has very little budget but is happy totry different approaches to finding asolution. He believes that the correct useof technology will help him and othersuse time and resource more effectively.
What devices do your audiences use?Own computer?Mobile device? Games console?Institution computers - What is the spec?

Merits of good design - Plymouth e-learning conference

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Speaking event http://www2.plymouth.ac.uk/e-learning/ 2010 Conference tag #pelc10
  • #4 …is considering the audience experience from the moment they: see, hear, interact with the resource, to the last time they interact with it.Much like when buildings are designed. Its more than just bricks and mortar, the spaces consider the uses.Photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/streamishmc/2340150187/
  • #5 Teaching staff and support staff are now in the business of creating interactive experiences.Book reference: Linchpin, Seth Godin, p85http://www.flickr.com/photos/tidymind/4327717486/Photo credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/storem/349222636/
  • #8 Potential benefits are for both the creator as well as the consumerPhoto credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/tinker-tailor/4285598900/
  • #9 Benefits of digital mediaInteraction – we can design and/or steer the interactions with learnersAdditional context – We can now produce lots of material that further supports ideas in the classroom – think hyper-linking but with multimedia not just text-based.Enhance learning – Multimedia creates new opportunities for ways of teaching Repurposing – For learners much of the outcomes can be used as evidence for further learning/employers. For staff there is scope to use learners work for informing future cohorts and ot share with colleagues
  • #11 We can use multimedia to support our PLEs.Couldn’t come to Plymouth and not cite Steve could we!
  • #12 Backup the backup and then backup again. Photo credit http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/4323319972/
  • #13 It is our duty to understand our audience and delivery resources that reflect their skills and resource. If the learners all have smartphones, take advantage – if not then don’t.
  • #14 Why are we building any resourcesImage credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/3489600094/in/set-72157604378784834/
  • #15 Its quite rare to have 100% of our user base in front of us on a weekly basis. Use some of the time to get to know them better. http://carsonified.com/blog/design/how-to-understand-your-users-with-personas/
  • #17 Many of you here will check work email.Eventually you start to do other work related ‘stuff’ and so do/will learners.Stats:http://efoundations.typepad.com/efoundations/2010/03/mobile-use-at-edinburgh.html
  • #18 This added value should lead to better results.
  • #20 Why are we building any resourcesImage credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/3489600094/in/set-72157604378784834/
  • #22 Stat from http://blog.mozilla.com/metrics/2010/04/05/firefox-page-load-speed-%E2%80%93-part-ii/Measuring allows us to benchmark our results which then can then use to do something else
  • #23 WORKBOOK story: I used a workbook, and though most folk left it behind, I thought it was useful… until I asked the next cohort and they said they didn’t need it, just the urls.. So I swapped to a Google document with clickable links and now everybody is happy – no more out of date info and a added benefit is a saving on scheduling the prints and on print cost.
  • #24 Even when you have produced a good resource there is room for improvement – Just look at F1The above graphic is displayed during practice, qualifying and the race. It displays live location and car data so that the team can look for improvements. http://mclaren.com/home
  • #26 Summary of a session?Full recording? Full recording AND additional material?Image credit: http://www.flickr.com/photos/antphotos/3489600094/in/set-72157604378784834/

  • #37 IPSGA is a system of riding used by IAM.We ride to this system EVERYTIME we go out. It allows us to have a plan that we can adapt at any moment. If we make a mistake then we can measure this as we are constantly checking against our “measures of success”.
