Horror And Horror In Mary Shelley s The Romance Of The Forest
In last week s reading, I focused on how Radcliffe s The Romance of the Forest emphasized the
effects of terror over horror. This week, Mary Shelley s Frankenstein emphasized the opposite: horror
over terror. One of the first things I noticed was Shelley s repetitious use of the word horror. I was
acutely aware of the term s continuous use, and noted the twenty nine times Shelley used it. In
Chapter 4, Botting examines the difference between horror and terror: [Horror] freezes human
faculties, rendering the mind passive and immobilising the body (69). The setting in Radcliffe and
Shelley s novels provide examples of how terror and horror differently influence their respective
storyline. Each novel introduces the story differently. In Romance, Radcliffe immediately included
gothic elements; in Frankenstein, Shelley introduces her first character in a series of hopeful letters.
Walton s first letter starts [y]ou will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the
commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings (Shelley 51).
Shelley s use of rejoice immediately assumes a hopeful and happy setting. The sentences following
confirm Shelley s romantic setting with words, such as play, delight, beauty, and perpetual splendor
(51). Meanwhile, Radcliffe s first page includes gloom, emergency, escape, and death, words that
inspire a sense of terror in her setting. Terror is always present in Radcliffe s novel, but can be

The Tort Law Imposes Liability
The essay question concerned with the tort law imposes liability in respect of the negligence.
Particularly, Marshall who is a trainee solicitor working at Maclarens Co, specialising in personal
injury claims. He give to each of the clients on the following clients have come to seek representation
as they are all being sued for negligence for various incidents in which people were injured. It has
been shown that they all owed the injured parties a duty of care, however, they all claim that they did
not breach their duty of care to the injured parties and how evidence of negligence is presented.
In the first case, Roberts v Ramsbottom [1980] , the defendant drove his car after he had unknowingly
suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was unfit to drive. He battled with a stationary van and with a
parked vehicle. The court held that he had continued to drive after he had suffered a seizure which
affected his reactions and was negligent in doing so. Therefore, a person might escape liability if his
actions at the relevant time were wholly beyond defendant s control. As well as it is automatism . The
automatism test important from criminal law later disapproved by the Court of Appeal.
Anyway, attorney general s reference (NO. 2 of 1992) referring in Roberts v Ramsbottom , the court
held that before the defence of automatism could be left to the jury a proper evidential foundation for
the defence had to be laid. It is the defence of automatism required a destruction of

Student Council National Honor Society
Over the last two years of my High School education, I found the extracurricular activities I fit in the
most. I am part of Student Council, National Honor Society and a member of the tennis team. They all
have molded me to be the best. However, I feel like tennis has impacted me the most. It s a sport that
has taught me so much, from being physically fit, to mentally prepared for any outcome. I learned that
a game it s not about winning or losing, but about how it s played, and what it took to get there. Being
in a team is about contributing others, and learning from them. It s about accepting that we all make
mistakes, and only practice can reduce the times we make them. So many loses and few victories, but

The Most Dangerous Gangs and How to Stop Their Violence
There are a lot dangerous gangs out there in the world. Some may be even closer than you think, for
instance in your children schools, their playgrounds and even in some after school church groups. So
everyone should take a part in trying to stop gang violence before it gets to be too late. In this paper it
will be explaining, the most dangerous gangs, and interview and most importantly how to stop gang
violence to make a better place for our future. In the United States, the top most wanted gang is the
Ms13, a very commonly well known gang. This gang is not just some want to be thug gang in some
guy s basement, trying to act all big and bad when they re not. This is a very well organized and well
thought out gang. They are known for being a part of selling drugs, human trafficking, murder,
contract killing, extortion and kidnapping. Their territory would be considered Central America and
the United States. Their exact location is not certain, that is part of what they do, stay unknown and it
s easier to do business like that. About 70,000 in the United States are members of the MS13.
Something that you may have heard of them would be the kidnapping of the son of the Honduras
president. (gangs.umd.edu) The second most wanted gang in the United States is the very well known
Crips. These guys are wearing blue, to support their love for their gang. Being a part of this gang is

Elizabeth Gaskell s Construction Of The Ideal Man
In Victorian Britain, monumental changes were occurring in regards to class structure and gender
ideals due to social and economic changes sparked by the Industrial Revolution. These changes caused
a new image of masculinity to emerge. The concept of masculinity came to embody a new ideal, self
made man, measured by advances based on personal success rather than birthright(M19). It was
expected that men were to exude manly toughness and independent spirit while providing the financial
support and leadership for the household(m19). Beyond these basic characteristics, Elizabeth Gaskell
s construction of the ideal man incorporates a fusion of gender traits as strengths of masculinity,
notably her emphasis on manly nurturance and tenderness as seen in her novel Mary Barton(wcm334).
While the evolving social structure of 19th century Britain was a cause for the increasing emphasis on
manliness, it was also the source of challenges faced by working class men as they struggled to
achieve and maintain this new sense of masculinity. By analyzing Gaskell s Mary Barton and
additional texts from the period, supplemented by contemporary analysis of the concept of
masculinity, this paper provides insight into the constructions of masculinity in working class men of
Victorian society and discusses the struggles workers faced as they strove to achieve manhood amidst
the changing social climate.
In order to understand the difficulty working class men encountered trying to maintain a

and cheaper for companies to produce what they produce on a faster past and on a daily basis
Description What is Robotics: robotics is a combination of engineering and science that includes
mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science. Robotics deals with the design
construction, operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control and sensory
feedback and information processing. these technologies are used to create machines that can replace
humans. Robots can be used in any situation and for any purpose as they have no feeling nor heart, but
today many are used in dangerous environments including bomb detection and de activation and in
war fields , manufacturing processes, or where humans life is at risk. Robots can take any shape and
look but some are made to look like humans in appearance and movement. This is said to help in the

textbook. Is he still staring? I asked a minute later. I thought you didn t want to know. She teased me.
Just check! I see her glance behind me once again. Yup. He s still staring. The bell rings for class
change and I gather my stuff and walk out the door with Della still gushing about Grant staring at me
when I hear someone call my name. Grant pushes his way out the classroom before stopping in front

Why? I was just wondering if you wanted to go. We could hang out if you like. Della and I kinda

Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey Literary Analysis
Jane Austen s novel, Northanger Abbey, is one that parodies the gothic genre that was remarkably
popular at the time. A story recognized for its various appeals to the politics and nature of society
during its time, it garners both praise and criticism. While critic Sara Whitecotton argues that Austen
advocates her political agenda of feminism in the novel, another critic, Jenna R. Bergmann, asserts
that the novel bolsters conventional gender roles, maintaining the chasm between males and females
places in society. Austen does not overtly proclaim her political stance in Northanger Abbey. However,
Sara Whitecotton identifies several instances insinuating Austen s views that women are individuals
with intellectual and creative capacities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bergmann insists that Austen widens the divide between males and females. Particularly through the
recurring expression of blushing, the author reinforces rather than breaks down the gender binary
because the act conveys a sense of innocence and naivety in females (Milne 214). According to
Bergmann, the frequent blushing in the novel is connected to purity and divinity, simultaneously
address[ing] the gaze of a male lover urged to take advantage of the blush s fleeting nature (Milne
211). Here, Bergmann is signifying female vulnerability and innocence, juxtaposing it with male
superiority and masculinity; however, Austen makes it evident that Catherine is not a customary
female character by highlighting that her blush passed away without sullying her heroic importance
(Austen 57). The author accentuates the fact that Catherine s heroism and strength remained intact
despite her body betraying her emotions. Additionally, Catherine, as she is training for a heroine, does
not succumb to blushing, but rather displays sallow skin without color (Austen 6, 8). Being heroic and
powerful, she does not showcase signs of vulnerability and innocence that is common among
traditional females. Instead she proves her heroism by not showing a hint of blush in her expression. It
is true that there are frequent displays of blushing through the story, but these instances do not
symbolize female weakness; contrarily, these display female empowerment

The Girl Who Drank The Moon
Synopsis The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Regan Barnhill is an intriguing book about a young
girl, named Luna, who becomes enmagicked at a young age. The story starts off in the Protectorate, a
dismal and sorrowful town on the other side of the perilous forest. Every year, come The Day of
Sacrifice, the people of the Protectorate were forced to sacrifice the youngest infant among them to the
evil witch. Moreover, according to centennial stories, if they did not sacrifice a child, the evil witch
would destroy them all with no mercy. However, the supposedly evil witch was not a threat to the
town whatsoever, and was instead a benevolent witch named Xan, who had nothing but good
intentions ahead of her. Xan did not understand why the people of the Protectorate insisted on leaving
a helpless child in the fatal forest every year. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the mother of the sacrificial infant would not hand over her child and instead put up a fight,
screaming and yelling at the people of the Protectorate to get away from her baby. Nonetheless, the
people of the Protectorate still got ahold of the infant and imprisoned the fuming, sorrowful mother
because she was considered a madwoman. The town suddenly filled with sorrow and as the people of
the protectorate left the infant in the forest, Xan retrieved the child and started her journey to one of
the Star Cities. As planned, during the journey across the forest, Xan fed the baby copious amounts of
starlight to dwindle the child s hunger. However, one night, while Xan wasn t paying attention, she
accidentally fed the infant strands moonlight, which enmagicked the child. The infant was becoming
powerful and magic ran all throughout her body. Will the child be able to control all the power she is
now holding inside of her and will the madwoman ever escape from prison? Read the book to find

Education And Recidivism Essay
Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians
and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they
assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs
to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005).
Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of
them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result,
when these policy makers ignore empirical research and findings and set up own policies, they are
setting up the offenders for failure and anyone else affected by the policies, ... Show more content on

However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above,
thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is
no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between
correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public
opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus,
empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa
2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime
Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts
of towards correctional education. VCCLEA allowed funding from the education programs to be used
in other departments (Brazell 2009) and thus slowly correctional education programs were dying

As people age, major organs began to have a decline in function and with age, we also damage those
organs and other various body parts. A major issue that is becoming more common is that people are
having occluded arteries and surgeons are afraid to touch these arteries because of the risk of rupturing
them. With this risk the patients undergo what is known as a coronary artery bypass graft, or a CABG

Educational Funding Levels For Public Schools Essay
The formula budgeting approach is the method most commonly used by states, including Georgia, to
determine K 12 educational funding levels for public schools (Green, 2014). This approach utilizes a
fixed method to allocate funds and, as maintained by Green (2014), is intended to provide an
objective, efficient, and equitable manner to distribute state education funds to local schools districts.
However, as observed with Georgia s own funding formula, this budgeting approach falls short when
full funding is not provided. As a result, funding inequities do occur as local sources of revenue vary
across the state.
Established by the Georgia legislature in 1985, the Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula
was designed to equitably provide K 12 educational services for Georgia students (Suggs, 2015). The
appropriation of QBE is to provide formula funds to school systems based on full time equivalent
(FTE) students in grades K 12 as outlined in O.C.G.A. 20 2 161 (Governor s Budget Report, 2015).
The funding formula is comprised of three broad areas that are combined to fund and equalize funding
from state and local revenue sources; the formula is QBE earnings plus any categorical grants plus the
equalization. (The Basics of Quality Basic Education (QBE) Funding, n.d). Furthermore, the formula
is calculated based on two components: total enrollment and student characteristics. It is based upon
FTE student counts across nineteen instructional programs (FY 16 GA QBE

The value of the mean is 30+2*40=110 Since they are uncorellated, the Correlation term is zero.
Thus, the variance is 144+4*225=1044
4b. Find the probability that .
With the mean and variance calculated above, the z value matching 120 is (120 110)/32.31=.31
The probability that z exceeds .31 is .3783.
Henceforth, suppose that X and W have a correlation coefficient ρ= .25.
4c. What is the covariance of X and W? 4d. Find the probability that .
Using the formula from part a: Var[X+2W]=864, making the z value (120 110)/29.39=.34. The
probability of exceeding .34 is .3669.
4e. Find the probability that .
At 50, the z value is 60/29.39= 2.04 The probability that z is less than this number is .0207. Since the

Allure Of Democracy
The Allure of Democracy
A democratic system is one that states strive for, as it allows for popular participation through the
electoral process; and depending on implementation tactics, states may or may not be successful in
this pursuit. Democracy looks different across nations, as exemplified with presidential, parliamentary
and mixed systems being put in place. However, what is the allure of democracy? Herein, differences
in executive leadership and duties and differences in powers are addressed in order to better
understand what democracy is and why it is a sought after system of governance. Democracy is based
on two fundamental concepts. The first of which is political participation, which requires all citizens
eligible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are, however, often times more stable systems. Paradoxically, the executive branch, some would
argue, is not sovereign the citizen is. This is because the president, as well as legislators, have a
responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major player falling
under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both the legislative
branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a legislative branch being
voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections), and only two political parties
stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no such thing as a vote of confidence,
meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they must be impeached). Political parties
don t get to choose the president (they choose a candidate to run), and though the president seeks to
establish a cooperative relationship across parties it isn t essential to his/her stay in office (Dahl, n.d.)
(Moe Caldwell, 1994).

Cross Sex Relationships Are Becoming Increasingly More...
Cross sex relationships are becoming increasingly more popular than ever before. According to
Schoonover and McEwan of Predicting the audience challenge in cross sex friendships, men and
women have complimenting communication styles and this is what makes cross sex friendships so
appealing as it grows to be more accepted (Schoonover, McEwan, 2014). In analyzing the benefits for
both sexes, the most significant challenges, and the cultural or societal challenges, it can be concluded
that while cross sex friendships come with their own trials, it can be a very rewarding relationship.
Who Benefits More Both men and women are able to reap the benefits of cross sex friendships
because they are given insight into unfamiliar territory. Seeking advice about the opposite sex with a
friend who is of the same sex does not always give the most accurate perspective and so that sex is not
represented. On the downside, women who have too many male friends may be seen as promiscuous
in this society because it is not a good look to spend too much time with men alone. This double
standard is why women may not benefit from maintaining many cross sex relationships. For this
reason, men have the greatest benefit for maintaining cross sex relationships which is why they may
be known to engage in them more frequently. Men Men benefit from cross sex friendships because
they seek out female companionship to receive a different type of attention their same sex
relationships may not be offering

technology, such as Telehealth. Telehealth is becoming universally essential for efficient, cost effective

be an effective tool in combatting the problem of provider shortages as evidenced by rural hospitals
starting to provide electronic consultations with specialists all over the country (Betbeze, 2017).

Homelessness Under The Mckinney Vento Homelessness...
Homelessness is one of the oldest problems that exist, fast forward almost 40 years since it s been
recognized as one and still there has been no avail to finding a real solution. The definition of
homelessness under the McKinney Vento Homelessness Assistance Act is defined as an individual:
who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; and a person who has a nighttime
residence that is supervised publicly or privately operated shelter, and c) an institution that provides a
temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or a private or public place not
designed for, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings.
Homelessness is basically another form of poverty except more extreme, yet society treats it as if it
was on another spectrum of problems. Some in society stigmatize this population by saying things
like: they re homeless because they are drug addicts, alcoholics, they don t want to work and just live
off the government for free. What many forget to think about are the factors that have these people on
the street, or the fact that they are not only experiencing personal hardship by being without a
permanent residence but emotional ones as well. Add the fact they are sometimes discriminated
against and excluded by society, and you will realize you are looking at one of the most vulnerable
populations.
This homelessness population consists of people from all age groups: infants, children, adolescents,
adulthood, and the

Salsa has its origin to Cuban son with use of heavy percussions (clave, maracas, conga, bongo,
tambores, bato, cowbell to name a few), then included the marimba, bass, guitar and other African
driven songs instruments. The rhythm has a very simple 1 2 3 sequence. The tempo is fast and the
musical energy is exuberant, but there are different types of salsa such as salsa dura (hard salsa) and
salsa romantica (romantic salsa), there are salsa merengues, chirisalsas, balada salsas the list goes on.
Besides its origin, Salsa was then later on conceived in New York, Harlem during the 1970s. It served
as a preservations towards the latino community because during the Cold War, when there were
tensions between the USA and Cuba, this specific genre of music served as a safe umbrella term for
use in the mass marketing of Latin music . Meaning that, it was strategically obscuring the fact that
the music was very clearly Cuban . By doing this, Salsa was clearly identified as the core unification
of the Latino community. (Rech

Demand and Forecasting For Domino s Pizza Vernessa Blackwell Professor Lundondo Mumeka
January 24, 2013 Introduction A demand analysis is a very vital tool when a company is starting a new
venture in a new market or when it needs to introduce a new product in the market. It would indeed be
impossible to forecast the profitability of any business venture without analyzing the demand and the
sensitivity of the industry and more so based on the location that the company would wish to venture
in. Many companies have failed to meet their goals after ignoring this vital ... Show more content on

Low income population will be particularly sensitive to price and may be unwilling to buy if they feel
that the price charged is too high (United States Bureau of the Census, 2002). A high income will
make the market less sensitive to price because they have an increased buying power and may even be
willing to pay more as long as they are guaranteed of good quality. Advertising will disseminate very
useful information to the potential customers. It will affect demand by creating an awareness and
interest in the company`s products. It helps the company communicate potentially attractive attributes
of its products that are superior to those of its customers. Domino`s needs to conduct extensive
advertising before it opens its doors to the people of Waldorf. This will make the people anticipate the
company`s commencement of operations and mentally influence their interest in its products and
consequently influence their demand for Domino`s products. The size of the population also has huge
impact on demand. There has to be enough number of people for a business venture to be successful
and attain good levels of profitability. A large population will avail to the company a sizable and
diverse target market and will also enable the company to benefit from economies of scale. Apart from

I Want To Be A Veterinarian
The career I chose to do when I get older is to be a Veterinarian. The job title is a Vet . This career is
about helping animals stay healthy. I chose this career because I ve always had an interest in learning
all about animals, more importantly my love for them. Also, I want to be able to help save them and
find new ways to keep them healthy. My parents and some other family members have always said I
have a special bond with animals. Veterinarian services are held in either a clinic, hospital, or even
sometimes mobile. When working in a hospital they do more severe surgeries and/or treatments. For
example, if a dog got hit by a car causing a life threatening injury more than likely it would need
immediate care. When working in a clinic, they mainly do check ups and minor surgeries. For
example, a dog getting spayed or neutered. Work can be emotionally stressful. says (BLS).
Veterinarians work full time 40 hours a week says (Veterinarian), but if I was to work in a hospital, I
would be on call for the most part, because emergencies can happen at anytime. says (Mckay,
Rosenburg). May have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled hours. says (BLS). Veterinarian
clinics and hospitals are all over the country. In order to be a successful veterinarian, they must find
respite. The work of a veterinarian is stressful and in order to be one they have to have a lot of
dedication. I need to have a lot of fortitude. There is a lot of talking and researching new

Bipolar Disorder And Major Depressive Disorder
Moods are feelings we all go through. Many different things can affect our moods. We can be super
happy or super down by anything instantly. If we were to accomplish something, get a good grade, or
a raise that will instantly change our mood and bring us to a happy state. If we were to fail, lose a job,
get a ticket that might make us go into a down or depressive mood. It is very normal for us to have our
moods affected by day to day life events. People who experience mood disorders get affected longer
and more severe to where it affects their lives so badly they can t function well. Even if things are
going well some people still get depressed, or when something they encounter bothers them. People
who experience extreme mood swings suffer drastically with their emotions. Their are two types of
mood disorders: bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder is also known to be
called manic depressive disorder. Research shows that bipolar disorder is genetic. Bipolar disorder has
two stages that people deal with, the manic stage and depressive stage. These stages can each last from
hours, days, to even years. Stress plays a role in these stages. These stages go from an intense happy
stage to a deep derisive stage. People suffer with elevated moods and personality change, and this
tends to affect their friends and family around them. Medication and psychotherapy both help treat this
disorder.
In the manic phase people tend to be extremely happy and work and

California Rail Case Study
California High Speed Rail Anil Hirani Concordia University Austin Texas Dr. Catalina Zarate April
5, 2015 Introduction and Highlights High speed rail (HSR) was generally defined as trains capable of
travelling at least 150 mph. The origin of high speed rail in California started in early 1980s, a 130
mile bullet train project between Los Angeles and San Diego was put forward as assembly bill.
Financing difficulties ultimately led the American High Speed Rail Corporation s (AHSRC)
abandonment of the project in 1984. California high speed rail authority has studied possible route
alignment for the 800 mile system serving Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area, the Central
Valley, Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Orange County and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For example, the total estimate for the total estimate for the full system (phase 1 and 2) had in fact
more than doubled from $ 25 billion (1999) to $ 50 55 billion (2009). The forecast distinguished two
types of market, one for interregional or long distance trips typically of over 200 miles, and a second
for intraregional or commuting trips of less than 100 miles. According to Charles River Association in
2020 the full CHSRA system would capture 32 million interregional train trips. The total ridership
would thus just exceed 42 million trips annually, based on a two tier fare system designed to
discriminate between business and non business travelers, with train tickets priced competitively at 50
% of the comparable airfare for each class. The revised business plan issued in 2009 used the same
CSI methodology but tested slightly higher fares. That plan estimated that train fares set at 83 % of
airfare would generate the greatest operating profit. At 83 % it can attract just over 40 million annual
passengers whereas at 50 % it would attract 54 million. Actions were required in the field of financial
funds and revenue of the California high speed rail were financial needs can be fulfilled by allowing

Dust Bowl Refugees In The 1930 s
The 1930 s were a time of tragedy for Midwestern people who lived in the United States, especially
farmers in the Great Plains region. During this time crops perished and winds picked up causing a
massive dust storm to begin. In the course of this catastrophe at least 350,000 Okies loaded their
belongings into cars and trucks and headed to California (Henretta, Hinderaker, Edwards, and Self
688). Californians were opposed to the arrival of these dust bowl refugees because they were
competition for California s already limited job market, the refugees were receiving a large amount of
the state s Federal Relief money, and they were causing problems in society. This essay will start with

These dust bowl refugees thought that California could be their salvation and a lot of them weren t
disappointed because the state distributed millions of dollars worth of relief supplies to dust bowl
refugees, ( Kern Will Probe 6) throughout the 1930 s. However, even with these federal relief
programs a numerous amount of these refugees still weren t wealthy by any means and were at a very
low point in their lives looking for any opportunity to stay alive. This alarming reality lead many of
these refugees to commit crimes for money or just to end up in prison where they would be fed and
sheltered. In San Quentin California alone the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas
contributed 882 prisoners, ( Dust Bowl Folks 2) to their state prison in 3 years. Those refugees
accounted for 18 percent of San Quentin State Prison s total inmate population. In short, this not only
put California in a social slump but also an economic crisis. Thus causing many Californians to be
aggravated with the reality that thousands of these people were coming to live in their home state. Not
only were these refugees coming to their state and committing crime, the state of California and the
tax payers were now the ones responsible for feeding and sheltering these criminals. Most importantly,
this responsibility wasn t cheap, the average cost per year of a prisoner in San Quentin is $215,
making a total of $190,512, ( Dust Bowl Folks 2) according to the Healdsburg Tribune in 1939. Sadly,
even those who didn t resort to crime and came to California with the best of intentions often only
caused problems for Californians. Employment groups and local businesses often had to halt
employee hiring. They wanted to try to make sure that Californian citizens were the ones getting the
jobs over the refugees. However, with the magnitude of people trying to get jobs and the fact that

The Utility of Deterrence as a Central Nuclear Security...
Understanding what role exists for nuclear weapons in the post Cold War world requires an
appreciation for the strategic concepts that defined Cold War nuclear strategy, as well as the
applicability of those concepts to the contemporary world. Cold War nuclear strategy was almost
entirely concerned with the bilateral relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, and
thus the central strategic concept to arise from this period was the notion of deterrence. Following the
collapse of the Soviet Union and the ongoing proliferation of nuclear weapons, the utility of
deterrence as a central nuclear security strategy is in question, even as the threat posed by the mere
existence of nuclear weapons increases. By 1997, at least ten countries had missiles capable of
delivering nuclear payloads over 500 kilometers, and nearly every country without intercontinental
capability is working on it (Stanley Payne 1997, p. 133). Furthermore, some countries with nuclear
capabilities, such as Pakistan, are seeing a serious threat to internal security, increasing the likelihood
that nuclear weapons will find their way into the hands of transnational terrorist organizations and
other actors far less susceptible to strategies of deterrence. By examining both the state of nuclear
security during the Cold War and the concept of deterrence in general in the context of contemporary
security issues, it becomes clear that there is no secure place for nuclear weapons in the post Cold

Theme Of Imoinda In The Queen Of Night
Imoinda is the only female character that receives some attention from the narrator. Imoinda is
Oroonoko s lover and eventually his wife. She has very little power in the narrative since she is part of
two repressed groups (slave and woman) (Ibbotson). She is praised by the narrator for her beauty and
her loyalty. These are the traits that make her special but also responsible for the fact that she has little
influence over what happens to her. Beauty makes her desirable for men regardless of whether she
wants them to fall in love with her or not. This can be seen in the old king. Loyalty to her husband is
what causes her demise since his desires are her desires, her loyalty causes her to act as he wishes her
to. This is also why she lets ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This leads to Oroonoko killing her by first cutting her throat, and then severing her yet smiling face
from that delicate body, pregnant as it was with the fruits of tenderest love. (Behn, Oroonoko 218).
Thereby, Imoinda s loss of identity is complete: She has lost her agency, her name, her life and even
her face has been torn off. She suffered all these brutalities by the hands of men who either wanted to
possess her or claimed to love her (in Oroonoko s case both). The narrative ends with her as the
narrator states: Yet, I hope, the reputation of my pen is considerable enough to make his glorious name
to survive to all ages, with that of the brave, the beautiful, and the constant Imoinda (Behn, Oroonoko
224). This leaves the reader with the idea of Imoinda rather than the person presented towards at the

Within the film, Edward Scissorhands, we are shown many different characters, stories, and people.
There are many differences shown between Edward Scissorhands and the townspeople, this is easily
viewed through the costumes they are wearing. Edward s costume consists of a black leather vest with
a variety of different dark belts around his waist, neck and on his arms, his costume also consists of
dark leather pants, which also has a variety of dark belts around his legs. This is also shown in Edward
s pale and scarred face, and in his black hair. Edwards costume relates to the dark, gothic world. The
residents of the town Suburbia wear costumes that consist of pastel colours and tacky clothing. The
difference between the costumes of Edward and the residents also connects us to what the two world
themes are, one that is dark, bland, and gothic and one that is colourful and tacky. This shows the two
different worlds, one that is gothic and one that is simple, colourful, and regular. Edwards costume
shows darkness, horror, and fear, which shows that his costume relates to the dark, gothic world. The

Installing Custom Cabinets At San Diego
Cabinets are a principal part of home furnishing but cabinets frequently wear down or become old
after a specific time period. Several individuals can t afford to substitute prevailing cabinetry but have
to put in a whole new collection. This entire project can be reasonably costly. Customized cabinetry
can be a solution, which apropos is ruling the market nowadays. Many landowners think through
installing custom cabinets San Diego to upsurge the splendor and functionality of their abodes. By
doing this, you will not only augment the appearance of your home but by refurbishing the old
cabinets you can also get done the task without much cost.
An impressive addition to your house during San Diego kitchen remodel would be custom cabinetry
and if you can do that without expending a fortune, then there is no superior deal. You can have the
advantage, gorgeousness and the functionality of custom made cabinets at half the rate that you would
spend purchasing new sets of cupboards. Rather than changing the whole prevailing set of cabinets,
making some simple modifications is a much better and low priced choice that gives worthy
outcomes. When there are many kinds of custom cabinets available in the market, there is no need to
pick stock cabinets. The charm of customized cabinetry can never be equated to stock cabinets.
Additionally, the usability of these cabinets has always revealed to be of much better value than that of
readymade ones. When you ponder custom cabinets, there is

December 3rd, 2014
Drama Research Paper Shakespeare s Play Othello is one of the more notable plays produced during
his playwright tenure, the play starts off with Othello who is a moor but the general of the Venetian
Army. In this particular play Shakespeare placed several different themes throughout the play but two
of the main themes were Love and Race. Othello is strong, confident man he is the head of one the
most prestigious armies in all Europe. But with all that success Othello had envious people watching
gain all this success, one of the people s name is Iago who. The straw that finally broke the camel s
back is when Othello eloped with the beautiful Desdemona daughter of Venetian senator Brabantio.
She disappoints her father by having wed the moor Othello and he disowns her for having done such a
deed. Brabantio even said to Othello that Desdemona would betray him just like she betrayed her
father.
In fact, being that Othello was from a foreign land and he was dark skinned this angered Iago even
more to the point that he concocted an elaborate story to break up Desdemona and Othello. Iago
manipulated Othello into believing that his sweet, loving was an adulteress and has lain with none
other than Michael Cassio. Othello has great love for Desdemona so when he hears this news he
becomes enraged. Through all the adversity he has faced for marrying Desdemona, he was even
accused by Brabantio of using trickery because he

Should The Government Regulate The Internet
These days the internet has become an essential part to living for almost everyone but one of the
controversial topics that people bring up is that whether or not the government should regulate
information on the internet. Both sides have valid points which form a reasonable argument. Some
people would say that they need to because of the dangers lurking around in the cyber world but the
reasons for why the government shouldn t regulate the Internet outnumber the reasons for why they
should. The federal government should not regulate or censor information on the internet because
doing so violates the first amendment and citizen s right to privacy, degrades the educational value of
the web, prevents the promotion and facilitation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2011, several people started a Don t Filter Me project. They wanted to remove the web filters on the
school computers that blocked several educational sites. They filed lawsuits and demanded that they
unblock these sites and take away the web filters. Also another group of people petitioned the
Supreme Court to strike down the Communications Decency Act in Reno v. ACLU in 1997. As a
result, the court granted the highest level of First Amendment protection to the internet. Also in 2004,
the Supreme Court announced that it will not hear government s appeal of a ban on the Child Online
Protection Act. They thought of this as a violation of the First Amendment (Internet Censorship 1).
Once again, it would be common sense to allow someone their first amendment and privacy rights.
Without these rights, the people would never be able to truly express their ideas to the public. If the
government censored the internet, people would not be able to publish what they wanted to because of
the internet regulation. Instead of thinking creatively and coming up with new ideas, people would
have to follow regulations. This could be a danger to society because it would hinder the people from
succeeding, evolving, and gaining more information. This is why people should be allowed to think
freely without the federal government censoring and regulating the internet (Redwin 3). This country
started on the foundation and basis of freedom so it should be kept that

Pet Adoption
Many people have different thoughts on adoption. Such as why adoption is a good thing not only for
the animal but also the owner, if each dog deserves a second chance, and if there should be kill
shelters.
Adoption is good for both the animal and the owner, by adopting an animal is gives them a new home
that they deserve. Adoption gives the owner a sense of what the animal has gone through, which
sometimes helps understand the way the animal may act and can help find ways to train them.
Adoption gives the animal a new start and a family that will love them no matter what. It can also help
a family come together in hard times and help each other get through it.
I believe that every animal deservers a second chance. It s not

The evolutionary histories of the technology and its associated manufacturing corporations have
always resulted in design deficiencies that have prevented the device from making it to the market.
However, with Taser International the company collectively refined the device based on the failures of
previous manufacturers and began marketing the device to law enforcement agencies as from 1998
onward.
Before Taser International, Jack Cover invented the TF 76 in the mid 1970s. It is now considered the
primary source of the modern CED or CEW s. The TF 76 originally fired two darts that were
propelled by gunpowder to reach a target up to 15 feet away. The TF 76 was initially viewed as a
dangerous weapon that was severely restricted resulting in a barrier of entry into many markets
including that of the law enforcement agencies.
However, in 1998 the CEO of Taser International introduced the M26 as the next new product. As
supported by the information in the advertisements found on the homepage of Taser International the
M26 was a model far more superior to any Taser model since its invention. The M26 was viewed as an
enormous breakthrough because it provided Electro Muscular Disruption (EMD) which instigated an
involuntary muscle contraction within the subject. However, the latest model being the X26 was

  • 2. Horror And Horror In Mary Shelley s The Romance Of The Forest In last week s reading, I focused on how Radcliffe s The Romance of the Forest emphasized the effects of terror over horror. This week, Mary Shelley s Frankenstein emphasized the opposite: horror over terror. One of the first things I noticed was Shelley s repetitious use of the word horror. I was acutely aware of the term s continuous use, and noted the twenty nine times Shelley used it. In Chapter 4, Botting examines the difference between horror and terror: [Horror] freezes human faculties, rendering the mind passive and immobilising the body (69). The setting in Radcliffe and Shelley s novels provide examples of how terror and horror differently influence their respective storyline. Each novel introduces the story differently. In Romance, Radcliffe immediately included gothic elements; in Frankenstein, Shelley introduces her first character in a series of hopeful letters. Walton s first letter starts [y]ou will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings (Shelley 51). Shelley s use of rejoice immediately assumes a hopeful and happy setting. The sentences following confirm Shelley s romantic setting with words, such as play, delight, beauty, and perpetual splendor (51). Meanwhile, Radcliffe s first page includes gloom, emergency, escape, and death, words that inspire a sense of terror in her setting. Terror is always present in Radcliffe s novel, but can be ... It has been shown that they all owed the injured parties a duty of care, however, they all claim that they did not breach their duty of care to the injured parties and how evidence of negligence is presented. In the first case, Roberts v Ramsbottom [1980] , the defendant drove his car after he had unknowingly suffered a cerebral haemorrhage and was unfit to drive. He battled with a stationary van and with a parked vehicle. The court held that he had continued to drive after he had suffered a seizure which affected his reactions and was negligent in doing so. Therefore, a person might escape liability if his actions at the relevant time were wholly beyond defendant s control. As well as it is automatism . The automatism test important from criminal law later disapproved by the Court of Appeal. Anyway, attorney general s reference (NO. 2 of 1992) referring in Roberts v Ramsbottom , the court held that before the defence of automatism could be left to the jury a proper evidential foundation for the defence had to be laid. It s a sport that has taught me so much, from being physically fit, to mentally prepared for any outcome. • 7. Elizabeth Gaskell s Construction Of The Ideal Man In Victorian Britain, monumental changes were occurring in regards to class structure and gender ideals due to social and economic changes sparked by the Industrial Revolution. These changes caused a new image of masculinity to emerge. The concept of masculinity came to embody a new ideal, self made man, measured by advances based on personal success rather than birthright(M19). It was expected that men were to exude manly toughness and independent spirit while providing the financial support and leadership for the household(m19). Beyond these basic characteristics, Elizabeth Gaskell s construction of the ideal man incorporates a fusion of gender traits as strengths of masculinity, notably her emphasis on manly nurturance and tenderness as seen in her novel Mary Barton(wcm334). While the evolving social structure of 19th century Britain was a cause for the increasing emphasis on manliness, it was also the source of challenges faced by working class men as they struggled to achieve and maintain this new sense of masculinity. By analyzing Gaskell s Mary Barton and additional texts from the period, supplemented by contemporary analysis of the concept of masculinity, this paper provides insight into the constructions of masculinity in working class men of Victorian society and discusses the struggles workers faced as they strove to achieve manhood amidst the changing social climate. In order to understand the difficulty working class men encountered trying to maintain a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Jane Austen s Northanger Abbey Literary Analysis Jane Austen s novel, Northanger Abbey, is one that parodies the gothic genre that was remarkably popular at the time. A story recognized for its various appeals to the politics and nature of society during its time, it garners both praise and criticism. While critic Sara Whitecotton argues that Austen advocates her political agenda of feminism in the novel, another critic, Jenna R. Bergmann, asserts that the novel bolsters conventional gender roles, maintaining the chasm between males and females places in society. Austen does not overtly proclaim her political stance in Northanger Abbey. However, Sara Whitecotton identifies several instances insinuating Austen s views that women are individuals with intellectual and creative capacities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bergmann insists that Austen widens the divide between males and females. Particularly through the recurring expression of blushing, the author reinforces rather than breaks down the gender binary because the act conveys a sense of innocence and naivety in females (Milne 214). According to Bergmann, the frequent blushing in the novel is connected to purity and divinity, simultaneously address[ing] the gaze of a male lover urged to take advantage of the blush s fleeting nature (Milne 211). Here, Bergmann is signifying female vulnerability and innocence, juxtaposing it with male superiority and masculinity; however, Austen makes it evident that Catherine is not a customary female character by highlighting that her blush passed away without sullying her heroic importance (Austen 57). The author accentuates the fact that Catherine s heroism and strength remained intact despite her body betraying her emotions. Additionally, Catherine, as she is training for a heroine, does not succumb to blushing, but rather displays sallow skin without color (Austen 6, 8). Being heroic and powerful, she does not showcase signs of vulnerability and innocence that is common among traditional females. Instead she proves her heroism by not showing a hint of blush in her expression. It is true that there are frequent displays of blushing through the story, but these instances do not symbolize female weakness; contrarily, these display female empowerment ... • 11. The Girl Who Drank The Moon Synopsis The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Regan Barnhill is an intriguing book about a young girl, named Luna, who becomes enmagicked at a young age. The story starts off in the Protectorate, a dismal and sorrowful town on the other side of the perilous forest. Every year, come The Day of Sacrifice, the people of the Protectorate were forced to sacrifice the youngest infant among them to the evil witch. Moreover, according to centennial stories, if they did not sacrifice a child, the evil witch would destroy them all with no mercy. However, the supposedly evil witch was not a threat to the town whatsoever, and was instead a benevolent witch named Xan, who had nothing but good intentions ahead of her. Xan did not understand why the people of the Protectorate insisted on leaving a helpless child in the fatal forest every year. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The town suddenly filled with sorrow and as the people of the protectorate left the infant in the forest, Xan retrieved the child and started her journey to one of the Star Cities. As planned, during the journey across the forest, Xan fed the baby copious amounts of starlight to dwindle the child s hunger. However, one night, while Xan wasn t paying attention, she accidentally fed the infant strands moonlight, which enmagicked the child. • 12. Education And Recidivism Essay Though there is evidence that educational programs are needed to help in reducing crime, politicians and policy makers have not really understood this finding and thereby support the programs they assume are better suited at deterring criminals. Thus, they directed funding from educational programs to other areas, such as in security and anger management or drug treatment (Batiuk et al 2005). Furthermore, studies have shown that those inmates that are released from prison, about two thirds of them end up being re incarcerated within three years of their release (Klein et al 2004). As a result, when these policy makers ignore empirical research and findings and set up own policies, they are setting up the offenders for failure and anyone else affected by the policies, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However most of the research did in fact have controls for some of these risk factors indicated above, thereby reducing structural inequalities that may be there in crime occurrence (Lori 2015). If there is no control on these risk factors, it can be said that there is a correlation but no causation between correctional education and recidivism, which is what most policymakers argue (Lori 2015). Public opinion also has a big impact on political will and what policies will be implemented and how. Thus, empirical research is more or less useless as it is hard to influence public opinion just by data (Latessa 2004). This can be seen historically, asin 1994, a law was signed in US called the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act (VCCLEA) which was the one of the main reasons of budget cuts of towards correctional education. • 14. Educational Funding Levels For Public Schools Essay The formula budgeting approach is the method most commonly used by states, including Georgia, to determine K 12 educational funding levels for public schools (Green, 2014). This approach utilizes a fixed method to allocate funds and, as maintained by Green (2014), is intended to provide an objective, efficient, and equitable manner to distribute state education funds to local schools districts. However, as observed with Georgia s own funding formula, this budgeting approach falls short when full funding is not provided. As a result, funding inequities do occur as local sources of revenue vary across the state. Established by the Georgia legislature in 1985, the Quality Basic Education (QBE) funding formula was designed to equitably provide K 12 educational services for Georgia students (Suggs, 2015). The appropriation of QBE is to provide formula funds to school systems based on full time equivalent (FTE) students in grades K 12 as outlined in O.C.G.A. 20 2 161 (Governor s Budget Report, 2015). The funding formula is comprised of three broad areas that are combined to fund and equalize funding from state and local revenue sources; the formula is QBE earnings plus any categorical grants plus the equalization. (The Basics of Quality Basic Education (QBE) Funding, n.d). Furthermore, the formula is calculated based on two components: total enrollment and student characteristics. Allure Of Democracy The Allure of Democracy A democratic system is one that states strive for, as it allows for popular participation through the electoral process; and depending on implementation tactics, states may or may not be successful in this pursuit. Democracy looks different across nations, as exemplified with presidential, parliamentary and mixed systems being put in place. However, what is the allure of democracy? Herein, differences in executive leadership and duties and differences in powers are addressed in order to better understand what democracy is and why it is a sought after system of governance. Democracy is based on two fundamental concepts. The first of which is political participation, which requires all citizens eligible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They are, however, often times more stable systems. Paradoxically, the executive branch, some would argue, is not sovereign the citizen is. This is because the president, as well as legislators, have a responsibility to uphold the wants of the people. This is often debated, though. A major player falling under this system is the United States. In the U.S. presidential system, voting for both the legislative branch and the presidential seat are voted on simultaneously (rather than a legislative branch being voted in, who then vote in the president as seen in parliament elections), and only two political parties stand out amongst the rest. There is no split government, and no such thing as a vote of confidence, meaning it is much harder to remove a presidential figure (they must be impeached). Political parties don t get to choose the president (they choose a candidate to run), and though the president seeks to establish a cooperative relationship across parties it isn t essential to his/her stay in office (Dahl, n.d.) • 20. Cross Sex Relationships Are Becoming Increasingly More... Cross sex relationships are becoming increasingly more popular than ever before. According to Schoonover and McEwan of Predicting the audience challenge in cross sex friendships, men and women have complimenting communication styles and this is what makes cross sex friendships so appealing as it grows to be more accepted (Schoonover, McEwan, 2014). In analyzing the benefits for both sexes, the most significant challenges, and the cultural or societal challenges, it can be concluded that while cross sex friendships come with their own trials, it can be a very rewarding relationship. Who Benefits More Both men and women are able to reap the benefits of cross sex friendships because they are given insight into unfamiliar territory. Seeking advice about the opposite sex with a friend who is of the same sex does not always give the most accurate perspective and so that sex is not represented. On the downside, women who have too many male friends may be seen as promiscuous in this society because it is not a good look to spend too much time with men alone. This double standard is why women may not benefit from maintaining many cross sex relationships. For this reason, men have the greatest benefit for maintaining cross sex relationships which is why they may be known to engage in them more frequently. Homelessness is one of the oldest problems that exist, fast forward almost 40 years since it s been recognized as one and still there has been no avail to finding a real solution. The definition of homelessness under the McKinney Vento Homelessness Assistance Act is defined as an individual: who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence; and a person who has a nighttime residence that is supervised publicly or privately operated shelter, and c) an institution that provides a temporary residence for individuals intended to be institutionalized, or a private or public place not designed for, a regular sleeping accommodation for human beings. Homelessness is basically another form of poverty except more extreme, yet society treats it as if it was on another spectrum of problems. Some in society stigmatize this population by saying things like: they re homeless because they are drug addicts, alcoholics, they don t want to work and just live off the government for free. What many forget to think about are the factors that have these people on the street, or the fact that they are not only experiencing personal hardship by being without a permanent residence but emotional ones as well. Add the fact they are sometimes discriminated against and excluded by society, and you will realize you are looking at one of the most vulnerable populations. California Rail Case Study California High Speed Rail Anil Hirani Concordia University Austin Texas Dr. Catalina Zarate April 5, 2015 Introduction and Highlights High speed rail (HSR) was generally defined as trains capable of travelling at least 150 mph. Financing difficulties ultimately led the American High Speed Rail Corporation s (AHSRC) abandonment of the project in 1984. According to Charles River Association in 2020 the full CHSRA system would capture 32 million interregional train trips. The total ridership would thus just exceed 42 million trips annually, based on a two tier fare system designed to discriminate between business and non business travelers, with train tickets priced competitively at 50 % of the comparable airfare for each class. The revised business plan issued in 2009 used the same CSI methodology but tested slightly higher fares. That plan estimated that train fares set at 83 % of airfare would generate the greatest operating profit. This alarming reality lead many of these refugees to commit crimes for money or just to end up in prison where they would be fed and sheltered. In San Quentin California alone the states of Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas contributed 882 prisoners, ( Dust Bowl Folks 2) to their state prison in 3 years. Those refugees accounted for 18 percent of San Quentin State Prison s total inmate population. In short, this not only put California in a social slump but also an economic crisis. Thus causing many Californians to be aggravated with the reality that thousands of these people were coming to live in their home state. Not only were these refugees coming to their state and committing crime, the state of California and the tax payers were now the ones responsible for feeding and sheltering these criminals. • 31. The Utility of Deterrence as a Central Nuclear Security... Understanding what role exists for nuclear weapons in the post Cold War world requires an appreciation for the strategic concepts that defined Cold War nuclear strategy, as well as the applicability of those concepts to the contemporary world. Cold War nuclear strategy was almost entirely concerned with the bilateral relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, and thus the central strategic concept to arise from this period was the notion of deterrence. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the ongoing proliferation of nuclear weapons, the utility of deterrence as a central nuclear security strategy is in question, even as the threat posed by the mere existence of nuclear weapons increases. By 1997, at least ten countries had missiles capable of delivering nuclear payloads over 500 kilometers, and nearly every country without intercontinental capability is working on it (Stanley Payne 1997, p. 133). Furthermore, some countries with nuclear capabilities, such as Pakistan, are seeing a serious threat to internal security, increasing the likelihood that nuclear weapons will find their way into the hands of transnational terrorist organizations and other actors far less susceptible to strategies of deterrence. By examining both the state of nuclear security during the Cold War and the concept of deterrence in general in the context of contemporary security issues, it becomes clear that there is no secure place for nuclear weapons in the post Cold ...
