Upton Sinclair
Upton Sinclair, the most influential writer regarding the food industry was born in Baltimore 1879.
Growing up in a poor family with an alcoholic father was difficult for Upton (Simkin, John). Upton
often lived with his wealthy grandparents during his childhood due to the instability in his own home.
Moving from his poor parents house to his grandparents rich house constantly made him see the
injustice in the American society, this made him become a radical socialist as young as his early teens.
At 14, Upton being the intelligent and independent man he was, started attending New York City
College. In order to make money to pay for his tuition, apartment, and still provide for his family,
Upton sold magazines and news articles of his socialistic ideas. The childhood Upton struggled
through with family and financial problems only made him strive to change the conditions of America
in his writing.
Sinclair s writing started to become very eminent in the early 1900 s, and by the age of 16 his book
The Jungle changes the food industry forever. In 1905 Sinclair was hired to work in Packingtown
Chicago for a meat processing company for a pay of $500 ( $13,513.51 today s money) (Upton
Sinclair Hits Readers in the Stomach). For two months Sinclair worked in the meatpacking industry,
afterwards, he went into solitude for nine months to write about the details of the industry. The meat
would be shoveled into carts,

Moreover, there has been a concerted effort to converge countries reporting standards. But despite this
effort substantial differences in countries reporting regulation and practices remain. This paper
explores these differences and the reasons why they exist as well as why they are likely to persist in
the foreseeable future. My analysis and comparison are conducted at a fairly high level to emphasise
that reporting regulation is a part of a country s broader institutional framework. Throughout the
paper, I give special emphasis to enforcement issues because of two related reasons. *The author is the

The Neurological and Behavioral Changes Associated with Learning Music as a Child
Some would argue that humans are intrinsically wired to produce music. As an infant, the sounds
children make while learning language mimic the tonal shape of language. Parents also tend to use
exaggerated highs and lows in their voices much like a simple melody to prepare and help develop the
infant s capacity to learn language. It has also been found that the neural networks used in language
acquisition are very similar to those used in music acquisition (Mithen 2006). Language acquisition
and development is imperative for an individual to survive, and if training the brain with music can
strengthen those networks, this is a subject of great importance. Since the 1940s doctors have
recognized the impacts of music on the behavior of patients with mental disabilities, and from this
discovery, the effects of music on a regular developing brain became a subject of great interest.
Researchers recognized that there was potentially an opportunity to increase brain development in
children resulting in discernable enhancements of skills into adulthood (Reschke Hernandez, 2011). It
is now known that childhood music education improves skills required for playing music, namely
motor functioning, auditory discrimination, and long and short term recall. These skills, learned
through music instruction, transfer to non musical skills such as verbal

Analysis Of Cathedral By Raymond Carver
A New Perspective Everyone at one point has judged a book by its cover. In the short story, Cathedral
, Raymond Carver creates a narrator who bases off ideas and assumptions about blind people from
movies. The narrator has never interacted with a blind person before the day where his wife invites her
friend, who is named Robert, to stay. The narrator and Robert have never met, but the narrator has a
strong dislike towards Robert before meeting. The narrator s closed mindedness and misconceptions
leads him to judge Robert, however after a few hours of interaction, the narrator learns more about
him and grows to have a new perspective about people not being who they think they are. The narrator
is pre judgemental towards all people who are blind, whether or not he has met them. He believes all
blind people are the same as those he has watched in movies. The narrator perception of the blind is
that they moved slowly and never laughed and when they went out they were led by seeing eye dogs
(Carver 104). The movie industry creates a false image of the blind, which leads to the narrator s
assumptions. However, the blind are not all the same, just like how everyone else in the world are not
the same. People are designed to be different in their personalities, thoughts, looks and much more.
The narrator s ideas of Robert are based off of false conceptions and this changes his attitude towards
Robert. The narrator already has strong feelings towards Robert before meeting him

Osmosis in Potato Tubers
Osmosis in Potato Tubers
Andrew Dickson Background
When a plant cell is bathed in a solution of the same concentration (isotonic) as its intracellular
environment, its mass and volume remain the same. This is because water enters and leaves the cells
at the same rate. There is no net loss or gain of water by osmosis.
Samples of cells can be placed in a range of solutions of different concentration. The cells will gain
water by osmosis when placed in solutions which are more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular
environment. They will therefore gain mass. The cells will lose water in those solutions that are more
concentrated (hypertonic) than the intracellular environment and so lose mass. The concentration of
the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of the potatoes expanded and increased in mass whilst others shrunk and decreased in mass.
This was caused by the diffusion of water from the cells to the sucrose solution or vice versa through
the process of osmosis. During osmosis water will diffuse across a semi permeable membrane from a
region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration.
The potato cylinders in both test tubes A and B with sucrose concentrations of 0% and 5%
respectively, had a noticeable increase in mass, whereas the potato in test tube C even though having
an increase in mass, was only marginal. This suggests that the sucrose concentration in test tube C,
which was 10%, is almost the same concentration (isotonic) as the potato s cells intracellular
environment because the mass remains relatively the same. This is because the movement of water
into and out of the cells occurs at the same rate and results in no net loss or gain of water by osmosis.
This also implies that the potato cylinders in test tubes A and B where bathed in a sucrose solution that
was more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment of the potato s cells. The cells of the
potato in test tubes A and B gained water by osmosis and therefore gained mass.
However, the results show that in test tubes D and E with sucrose concentrations of 15% and 20%
respectively, that there was a decrease in mass of the potato cylinders. This was

The Ethics Of Reproduction
This post was very intriguing and informative about the views you have on this topic. I do believe that
people desire without fully understanding what desire is or how they came to that conclusion. People
do learn how to comprehend everything, from the moment we were born, the new world and people
become the basis of our learning and comprehension. The child looks around and learn all about the
surrounding, then soaking it in like a sponge, just to understand the world we live in today. The need
to protect is something that people feel throughout their lives, especially their families. Maslow had a
great idea about the limits of humans, but only on some physical needs, such as reproduction and the
need to stay busy. Reproduction is a need that

Delivery of low molecular drugs using chitosan and its derivatives
1. Introduction
The primary focus of this term paper consists of two parts. First, review chitosan based drug delivery
system for the delivery of traditional low molecular weight drugs based on a review paper titled
targeted delivery of low molecular drugs using chitosan and its derivatives (Advanced Drug delivery
reviews, 2010). Second, critique an original research paper about hydrotropic oligomer conjugated
glycol chitosan as a carrier for tumor targeted paclitaxel delivery, which was published in Journal of
Controlled Release in 2013 (title: Enhanced drug loading and therapeutic efficacy of hydrotropic
oligomer conjugated glycol chitosan nanoparticles for tumor targeted paclitaxel delivery).
Chitosan, a linear aminopolysaccharide composed of randomly distributed (1→4) linked D
glucosamine and N acetyl D glucosamine units, is obtained by the deacetylation of chitin, a structural
element in the exoskeleton of crustaceans, which is the second most abundant natural biopolymer after
cellulose (Fig. 1). The most easily exploited sources of chitin are the protective shells of crabs and
shrimp. The primary aliphatic amines of chitosan can be protonated under acidic conditions (amine
pKa is 6.3). Fig 1. Chemical structure of chitosan

Employee Remuneration
Chapter I
INTRODUCTION
1. MEANING OF WAGE/ COMPENSATION PAYMENT: Wage is a monetary payment made by the
employer to his employee for the work done or services rendered. It is a monetary compensation for
the services rendered [1]. A worker may be paid Rs. 100 per day or Rs. 4500 per month. This is wage
payment. The worker gives his services and takes payment called wage payment. Industrial workers
are paid remuneration for their services in terms of money called wage payment. Wages are usually
paid in cash at the end of one day, one month or one week. Money wage is the monetary compensation
or price paid by the employer to his employee for the services rendered. Such compensation is also
called wage or salary or reward ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is due to poverty, rising prices, mass unemployment and rising population. Wage payment indeed
a vexatious problem and needs to be tackled from economic, social and humanistic angles.
1.2 CONCEPT OF FAIR WAGES:
Fair wages is the wage which is above the minimum wage but below the living wage. Obviously the
lower limit of the fair wage is the minimum wage and the upper limit is set by the ability of the
industry to pay. Between these two limits, fair wages should depend on the factors like 1. Prevailing
rates of wages in the same occupation 2. Prevailing rates of wages in the same region or neighbouring
areas 3. Employers ability to pay 4. Level of national income and its distribution 5. Productivity of
labour 6. Status enjoyed by the industry in the economy
Hence it can be said that fair wages are determined on industry cum region basis. When fair wages are
paid employees enjoy higher standard of living. It is accepted fact that wages must be fair and
reasonable. Wages is fair when the employee is able to meet its essential needs and enjoy reasonable
standard of living. Equal pay for equal work serves as base of fair wage [4].
1.3 FACTORS INFLUENCING WAGE AND SALARY STRUCTURE [5] The organization s ability
to pay:
Wage increases should be given by those organizations which can afford them. Companies that have
good sales and therefore high profits tend to pay higher wages than those which are

Isaac Newton Laws
Have you ever stopped and thought who make the 3 laws of motion. Well the one and only Isaac
newton of course created the 3 laws of motion. This is going to be about newton s 3 laws of motion
and his life story. Isaac Newton is a physicist, mathematician, scientist, philosopher, and an
astronomer. He was born january 4, 1643, in woolsthorpe england. He died march 31, 1727 in london,
england, united kingdom. Isaac was established physicist and mathematician, and is credited as one of
the greatest minds of the 17th century. In isaac s childhood he was the only son of a prosperous local
farmer, also named Isaac Newton, who died three months after, Isaac Newton was born! Isaac Newton

gravity and the rest, is history. There is only a little bit of truth about the apple. Isaac newton
discovered important things before the apple incident. Physical science is an area of science i would
like to study because there is different subjects of science Regents physics, like mechanics, energy,
electricity, magnetism , wave phenomena, geometric optics, modern physics, internal energy, nuclear
physics, and general. All of those i found interesting and cool because all the science and math put
together. They are interesting because math and science are challenging, it s in saying that isaac
newton and other scientist can think the way they do, that s why they make up inventions that change
the world. Math and science are difficult but easy at the same time, some people didn t get what isaac
was saying. But really if you put your mind to his 3 laws you can figure them out. Isaac Newton was a
brilliant scientist, he made up 3 laws, that changed the world. When he was born he wanted to change
the world and when he died he, he died knowing that he changed the

Causes of the 1905 Revolution
The 1905 revolution in Russia began when armed forces set fire on a group of peaceful protestors
outside the Tsar s Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. However there were many factors in the build up to
revolution in 1905. Prior to 1905, disturbances in Russia could have been seen as quite rare. Russia
was though suffering from a long period of repression and unrest. From the implementation of tsarism
in Russia, the regimes had slowly developed into more of an autocratic establishment which
implemented it s will onto the people with lesser regard for human life and liberty. Since the 1860 s
there had been gradual changes in governmental, legal, social and economic policy implemented,
however the political system was left unchanged. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The majority of the protestors did not have a chance. This event was the spark for many further
revolutionary activities by different groups which culminated in the 1905 revolution.
The mood prior to the 1905 revolution in Russia was a quiet but angry one. The peasants and workers
situation was slowly worsening, only made worse by bad harvest and economic reforms implemented
by the tsarist government which left the poor even poorer. The tsarist regime had always been, but was
becoming more and more repressive and undemocratic. The choice to go to war with Japan had
initially been perceived as a good one but as a result of the severe losses the tsar and his regime was
seen to be incompetent and all morale in the government and the army was lost. All these causes led to
the eventual revolution of

The Negative Analysis Of Alaska Airline Pilots At Alaska...
For the past ten years, pilots at Alaska Airlines have been underpaid, and now, after merging with
Virgin America, pilots are protesting Alaska s negligence. In 2005, Alaska pilots had pay cuts of 26%
when the airline industry lost an estimated $7.4B (IATA, 2005) due to fuel price surges (James,
Andrea, 2007). Since then, fuel prices have fallen significantly; pilots at Alaska have been paid less
than those at other legacy airlines, such as Delta or United (Glassdoor, 2017). According to self
reporting surveys, Alaska Airline pilots earn on average $107,860 a year while Virgin pilots earn
around $100,00 a year (Glassdoor, 2017). Compared to a legacy airline like Delta, with an average
pilot salary of $137,587 per year (Glassdoor, 2017), Alaska and Virgin do not pay their pilots
competitively. The merger with Virgin increased dissatisfaction with their compensation, leading to
pilots at Alaska speaking out against the company, specifically through the creation of an awareness
campaign This Merger Won t Fly to rally against the inequitable pay ( This Merger Won t Fly , 2017).
Pilots, backed by the support of their unions, are negatively impacting flights and consumers by
leveraging their salience as stakeholders. Although passengers choose airlines based on price, 87% of
respondents to a survey said employee strikes will cause them to book with a different airline (see
Figure III). Horizon Air, an LCC subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, has been suffering the most from the

The Icf Brief Core Set For Hl
The novel approach used in this investigation, the validity of the ICF Brief Core Set for HL has been
confirmed, supported the pilot studies results, and one category is being suggested to be added.
Thereby, a statistically validated version of the ICF Brief Core Set is proposed and could be used as
essential tool to capture factors leading to increase the likelihood of hearing disability and
socioemotional isolation among older adults with and without HL.
Overall, three methods (linking, self reported, and proposed model of standardized outcome measures)
validated most of the ICF categories; however, there was a slight difference as a result of purpose of
validation and research design as presented in Table 13. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the second pilot study we estimated the effect of global and specific cognitive functions in
restricting participation in daily life activities. The Self Reported ICF Brief Core Set Scale for HL in
its simple and initial version, obviously, reveals that memory and hearing dysfunctions and inability to
listen and communicate effectively were the major problems that limit and restrict participation in
social interactions followed by attention deficits, temperament and personality, emotional problems,
and sensation of tinnitus. These finding were verified and confirmed by the standardized outcome
measures. In regards to the environmental factors, it is interesting that the majority of the participants
rated background noise and loud sound as barriers, while majority rated family support, family
attitude, and social attitude as facilitators that have a relevant influence on functioning. For older
adults HA users, the majority rated HAs use as facilitators, however, few reported HAs use as barriers.
Further, the Self Reported ICF Brief Core Set Scale for HL factor analysis replicated the four factor
solution of older adult s functional performance that was found in the pilot studies linking
methodology and qualifier coding procedure (Alfakir, et al., 2015a). The overall

A New York Police Department
Picture a woman standing in a subway station in New York City. Her purse is slung over her shoulder
as she reads the railway map. A thief approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of
her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman does not call
the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the
NYPD. Such a scenario is shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the
jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department. Unfortunately, such scenes of
distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number
of arrests made for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a
multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio, many of which the NYPD considered
offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor s actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police
of New York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By
indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave
reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to the
New York Times, the NYPD s disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights
slighting the police accumulated. The mayor s staff hired a former aid to a prominent religious figure

which restrictive $200 tax on the manufacture or sale of machine guns and sawed off shotguns. All
sales were to be recorded in a national registry. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted to prevent any mafia

The Increasing Need for Urban Planning
1. Introduction Quantitative urban studies are becoming increasingly important for planners knowing
that in the year 2015 more than half the global population will be residing in cities [1]. Suitable urban
planning ought to be a top priority for future development but unfortunately sound planning has not
taken place especially in many African cities as heavy rural urban migration continues to cause cities
to expand at uncontrollable rates [2]. As a consequence, the urban population in Africa is increasing at
a much faster rate than in the rest of the world, contributing to the augmentation of the existing
problems such as unsuitable land use [3]. The concentration of population in cities comprises as much
as 60% of the total population in most countries. In these immense urban settlements the
environmental and social consequences are sometimes disastrous [4]. Large cities in Africa such as
Nakuru have experienced a fast growth rate of 13.3% between 1990 and 2006 [5]. The magnification
has been attributed to a number of factors, mainly the aperture of the new Naivasha Nakuru road,
which links the megacity of Nairobi. Post election violence is verbally expressed to be one of the
contributing factors, since many displaced people from neighboring towns migrated to Nakuru as a
safe shelter. The main consequences in these African cities include; urban sprawl, unsuitable land use,
inadequate transportation systems, air and water pollution, depletion of natural resources,

Australian Football Field Decision-Making Analysis
CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION
1.1 Introduction
Australian Football is a unique invasion game comprised of two teams of 22 players per side (36
afield), utilizing many skills (*****back and afl). The combination and display of long kicking, high
marking, tackling and nonstop action make it Australia s number one spectator sport (**** ref) and
separate it from other football sporting codes. The overall aim of the game is to kick a ball between
goal posts positioned at the opposition team s end of the field to score a goal worth 6 points and the
ball can be moved in any direction by hand (handball) and by foot (kick).
The Australian Football League is the elite competition of Australian Football, it is comprised of 18
teams that face each other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

(Araújo., 2004)
1.3.3 Kick Side
The execution of a kick on a players preferred or non preferred foot is likely to alter the kick technique
and pattern (ball 2011 ref*************). A kick performed on the non preferred foot is typically less
coordinated than that of a preferred foot kick (ball 2011), and is likely to travel a shorter distance and
miss the target.
1.3.4 Kick Source
Kick Source is the method in which a player comes in possession of the ball before performing a kick.
These include, but are not limited to marking the ball, receiving the ball via a handball from either a
team in general play or after a mark and a ground ball. Kick source is likely to have an impact on
accuracy of the resulting kick as it can often be an indication of the scenario and the pressure being
applied. For example a player executing a kick as a result of a stoppage is likely to be under pressure
due to congestion of opposition players in the immediate area.

important? Ageism can relate to everyone in the society; managers, employees, teachers, police
officers, principles, etc. For example in a workplace, there are questions you are not allowed to ask
during an interview, to your employees and coworkers, etc. Managers can get in trouble for saying
stuff like you can t do this because your too young , forcing someone to retire due to their age, not
interviewing someone due to their age, As an employer, you cannot be denied a job, training or
promotion, or forced to retire, because of your age, etc.
If you are experiencing age discrimination against you, you can make a human rights complaint by
contacting the human rights tribunal of Ontario. The Ontario Human Rights Code protects people
from discrimination under the ground of age. The Code defines age as 18 years or older However,
persons age 16 or older are protected from discrimination in housing if they are not living with their
parents also you cannot refuse to rent to younger people because you assume they won t be good
tenants.
Why do we discriminate against young people and old people? We have a stereotype in our heads ...

Buying things can also be hard for younger people, buying a house, a car, electronics, etc. People will
judge you thinking that you will not able to afford the item. There are very few opportunities for
younger generations due to the fact that people are retiring later since our life expectancy is later, older
generations might need to find a job after they retire because they might need to pay for their kids if
they got fired or can t find a job due to age discrimination or paying back their kids education funds,
which means that the younger generation will have a hard time supporting the baby

U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis Essay
The U.S. subprime mortgage crisis was a set of events and conditions that led to the late 2000s
financial crisis, characterized by a rise in subprime mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures, and the
resulting decline of securities backed by said mortgages. After U.S. housing sales prices peaked in mid
2006 and began their steep decline, refinancing became more difficult. As adjustable rate mortgages
began to reset at higher interest rates, mortgage delinquencies soared. Securities backed with
mortgages, including subprime mortgages, widely held by financial firms, lost most of their value.
Global investors also drastically reduced purchases of mortgage backed debt and other securities as
part of a decline in the capacity and willingness of the private financial system to support lending.
Concerns about the soundness of U.S. credit and financial markets led to tightening credit around the
world and slowing economic growth in the U.S. and Europe.
The immediate cause or trigger of the crisis was the bursting of the United States housing bubble
which peaked in approximately 2005 2006. Caused by an increase in loan incentives such as easy
initial terms and a long term trend of rising housing prices had encouraged borrowers to assume
difficult mortgages in the belief they would be able to quickly refinance at more favorable terms. Once
interest rates began to rise and housing prices started to drop moderately in 2006 in many parts of the
U.S., refinancing became more difficult. As

Long-Term Consequences Of Children In The Culture Of...
In today s society, children are immersed in the culture of competition. This can be seen in all aspects
of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in
moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of
such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on winning
can destroy a child s view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and confidence
later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be discouraged, or we
risk raising a generation grown on false hope.
Hard work and team play are often aspects of a child s life that are diminished with the overemphasis

People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an early
age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that competition is
necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true. We do need to train
children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were to allow for competition to
be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to occur only for self improvement. If
we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to lose. A platform for trial and error is
necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and winning is the goal. We can t change
everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage childhood competition altogether. In
Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of
competition, and states the type of competition that we need to see in Competition is a big part of our
children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We need to praise every effort by character,
self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. I think we d all agree that if our children
displayed all of the above attributes throughout their lives, we would be extremely proud parents.

Vaccinations can be administered shortly after birth and are recommended into adulthood. The first
dose of the Hepatitis B (Hep B) vaccine is typically given shortly after birth but may be given at one
or two months of age. Hepatitis is a disease effecting the liver and can be life threatening. By two
months of age physicians recommend the second dose of Hep B along with the first dose of the
rotavirus, diphtheria, tetanus toxoids and pertussis (TDaP), hemophilus influenza type B (Hib),
pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and the inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV).
Rotavirus causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines; it effects infants and young children
often causing severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and dehydration. Tetanus
toxoids (lock Jaw), pertussis (whooping cough), and diphtheria which is described as a thick covering
in the back of the throat, are all included in the TDaP vaccine. Diphtheria may lead to breathing
difficulties, paralysis, heart failure, and even death. The hemophilus influenza type B vaccine which
prevents meningitis (an infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord), pneumonia, and

elements that people don t really know about hidden inside the song. In the song it shows confidence,
self reliance, individuality, and nonconformity. Twisted Sister wrote the song to stand up for yourself

lyrics say Your life is trite and jaded boring and confiscated if that s your best, your best won t do. The

Elementary School Vs Middle School Research Paper
School is always extremely important in my town because it s a huge part of everybody s life. We
have 3 schools but 2 of them are really competitors, elementary school and middle school. The only
question is, which one is the best?
The first difference between my elementary and middle schools is the lunches. The lunches in
elementary school where short and the teachers didn t allow the kids to use forks. So, for example, if
you wanted to eat their pancakes, you needed to use a single spoon. However, in middle school you
get to choose what you want to use (except for knives) and choose what you want to eat. There is a
buffet style lunch line for food and you don t have to eat exactly what they make for lunch.
The next difference is P.E. Both schools have very similar classes for this but they are still different.
For example you played much more fun games in elementary ... Show more content on

Every student had computer lab and art. Art was just art there was really nothing special about it and
computer lab was just learning how to type. Which, as you can imagine, both got extremely boring
after a semester. However, the middle school has a multitude of different classes and you get to pick 2
that you want to take. For example, you can take band, chorus, art, photo shop, horticulture, and a lot
more.
Field day is the day at the end of the year where kids get to have fun and celebrate because the year is
over. However, the field days are not very similar at all. In the middle school you walk to the park and
mess around there for a few hours. This makes the day extremely boring and you don t have any water
so in the hot may day you are sweating a lot and have nothing to drink. The elementary school,
however, has a much better field day. You get to play on the blacktop or the grass and they had
jumping pits and WATER. At the time it was very fun and Definitely better than the middle school s

Uneven Playing Field
I have decided to write a response paper to Michael Sokolove s The Uneven Playing Field. The ideas
that Sokolove has presented in this article was very interesting and I agree with him. I will be relating
Sokolove s article with overspecialization and how is it harmful to younger athletes, injury prevention
programs and the way that they help prevent injuries, the exception to the injury prevention programs,
and mentality of athletes when they do get injured or hurt.
As mentioned by Sokolove on page two, ... we increasingly ask more of young athletes, especially if
they show talent: play longer, play harder, play faster, play for higher stakes. And we ask this of boys
and girls equally unmindful of physical differences. The pressure to concentrate on a best sport before
even entering middle school and to play it year round is bad for all kids. I agree with Sokolove s quote
because overspecialization can harm the social, emotional, and physical development of young
athletes. Specifically, in terms of the physical development of an athlete for this reading response
paper, overspecialization leads young athletes to commit the majority of their physical activity to one

Sokolove mentioned this idea on page two when he says The influence of estrogen makes girls
ligaments lax, and they outperform boys in tests of overall body flexibility a performance advantage in

athletes weaknesses. These athletes with the injury prone bodies will still have a risk of hurting
themselves in the future, but the risk percentage will decrease with the help of the prevention

Destruction In Ernest Hemingway s The Old Man And The Sea
Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated, Ernest Hemingway. In the novel
The Old Man and the Sea written by the spokesman of this quote, it is truly demonstrated that a man
can be destroyed but not defeated through the main character, Santiago. He is an older man who loves
to fish and devotes most of his time to fishing. Unfortunately, he had not brought back a fish in over
eighty days. This occurrence lead to his pupil Manolin s parents not allowing their son to fish with
Santiago and also some other fishermen who thought he was a joke. Like Manolin s parents and also
the other fisherman, many disbelievers think that the old man is unlucky, therefore it is not his fate to
catch a worthy fish. They believe that it takes luck and fate to catch a fish. On the contrary, both
Santiago and Manolin disagree as they believe that pride and ambition will help Santiago finally catch
his dream fish. The theme of pride of ambition beating out their counterparts fate and luck is
thoroughly expressed in all facets of this novel. Three main occurrences where the theme is present is
when he still goes out even with his bad luck , when he continues to hang on to the fish he has hooked,
and finally when he returns home and his pride and ambition is recognized by others. The first
example of the theme being present in the book is when Santiago decides to still go out and fish. As
the first sentence of the book states, He was an old man who fished alone in a

Love Not All
This poem is broken in to three distinct parts even though it does not contain multiple stanzas. The
first section is from line one to line six. Within this section the initial idea of the poem is presented.
This idea that love is not all completely contrasts standard belief. Edna St. Vincent Millay compares
love to all the basic life needs including food, water, and shelter. Millay is being practical and logical
which are not words usually associated with love. In lines five and six Millay talks about how love can
not fill the thickened lung with breath, nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone. Not only does
this provide evidence for her initial claim, it also further dwindles the universal idea that love is
endlessly powerful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The repetition of the words rise and sink in lines three and four symbolize the rise and fall of ocean

and eight. Here Millay addresses what many of us know to be true. She says that yet many a man is
making friends with death even a I speak, for lack of love alone. The tone of this section is
questioning all people. Millay almost says how can people still be so willing to die knowing all that
she stated earlier to be true. This questioning takes readers into the next section which is from line
nine to line fourteen. Here Millay shifts the focus of others to herself. She opens the section by
providing readers with vivid imagery. She states that pinned down by pain and moaning for release, or
nagged by want past resolution s power, I might be driven to sell your love for peace or trade the
memory of this night for food. She intendeds to have readers feel her imagined pain through words
like moaning and pinned. This quote also reveals to readers the setting of the

Technology And Its Impact On Modern Society
In the past century, society has seen great leaps in technology that has connected people together more
than ever, it has saved lives and continues to make day to day life simply easier to navigate. However,
there are consequences to these advances. With people clamoring every year to get their hands on the
newest iteration of their electronic devices, whether it be the latest iPhone, a more advanced computer
or a high definition television society must confront the problems it has created by its own desire for
technology. As consumers purchase newer and better version of their old electronics the question of
what happens to the old ones is raised. In 2005 alone, it was estimated that Americans disposed of two
million tons of electronic products a year and that by 2010 that number would grow to four hundred
million annually (Eilperin). This rate of disposal leaves behind piles of unwanted electronic devices
and while many of these devices end up in junk drawers there are many more that end up in landfills
where their toxic metal innards contaminate drinking water and soil. Or, devices are left to go to seed
in some lonely warehouse long since abandoned by its own and there is always the possibility of
devices being exported to poor countries where recycling regulations are lacks. The scope of the
problem is not small as it is estimated that the hazard created by electronic waste threatens over one
hundred million lives worldwide (Wood). To begin to understand why

For Proteins, Form Shapes Function Essay
Proteins are fundamental components of all living cells that participate in some of the most important
biological processes, including cell growth and maintenance, movement and defense. They are
complex molecules that consist of one or more chains of amino acids, have distinct three dimensional
shapes and whose structure and structural dynamics directly influence their specific function.
Most proteins have a primary, secondary and tertiary structure, but some of them, like hemoglobin,
also have a quaternary structure. The primary structure of a protein is represented by the ordered
succession of its amino acids held together by covalent bonds. While in nature amino acids may
possess either the D or L configuration, amino acids within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

They also preserve the bond angles and the planar configuration of the peptide bond, as well as keep
atoms from coming together so closely that they repel each other through Van der Waal s interactions.
A protein s tertiary structure, the compact, biologically active and most stable form of the protein,
results from further folding of the amino acid chain. The environment in which a protein is
synthesized and allowed to folded is a significant determinant of its final shape. If the tertiary structure
of a protein is disrupted, the protein is said to be denatured, and it loses its activity. Based on their
tertiary structure, proteins can be classified as globular, fibrous and membrane proteins. Globular
proteins participate in sophisticated processes such as enzyme mediated catalysis, transport of
molecules, signal transduction, defense and regulation.
In order to function properly, these proteins need to be compact, soluble and able to form active sites.
Proteins of the cytosol need a dense enough structure in order to be able to coexist alongside other
components of the cytosol, yet still retain their ability to diffuse freely. In addition to being highly
crowded, the environment of cytosolic proteins is also aqueous, which requires them to be water
soluble, so as to prevent aggregation and sedimentation. Most of the protein functions involve

The Tokugawa shoguns engaged in large irrigation projects and almost doubled the agricultural area of
Japans. Japan produced rice, sesame oil, indigo, sugar cane, mulberry, tobacco and cotton.
Education became a big thing.
Cities grew, with EDO growing almost 10 times its size, from 150,000 people in 1610 to 1.4 million in
1720, making it the largest medieval city outside China s. Sewer systems kept the cities clean and

The End of the Tokugawa Shogunate
When the US came to Japan s shores in 1853, there was no other way than signing the treaty and
opening up Japan for trade. The US displayed a superior military force that Japan could not match.
At this time the shogunate experienced civil unrests and a growing opposition. Samurai and daimyo
had not prospered as well as merchants and peasants. Taxes were high and repeated famines led to
peasant uprisings. 1868 two powerful anti Tokugawa clans combined forces and toppled the

Analysis Of The Opening Scene Of Macbeth
Location: A forest or hill in Scotland
General Summary: The three witches meet on a stormy night out in the open country to discuss when
they should meet with Macbeth.
Analysis:
The opening scene of Macbeth is super short but it introduces the 3 most influential characters of the
play.
The witches presence in the play is very small but they remain a constant and a powerful beings
throughout.
This first scene establishes the witches connection to Macbeth. It makes the reader curious to discover
who he is and also what is the hurlyburly (I, i, 3) that the witches discussed.
Shakespeare creates dramatic irony, in that he informs the reader that Macbeth does not have and will
never have throughout the play a free action. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The witches refer to their two familiars, Graymalkin and Paddock .
The fact that they have familiars is enough to secure the reader s impression of them as witches.
Central Questions:
Why does Shakespeare open the play with the witches, rather than Macbeth?
How does this effect the first scene of the play?
What impressions can I as a reader take away from this? What effect does the way the witches speak
create?
Act I, Scene ii
Location: A soldier s camp
General Summary: King Duncan and his three sons are introduced. King Duncan hears from several
soldiers of Macbeth s bravery in battle and decides to make Macbeth Thane of Cawdor.
Analysis:

Macbeth killed Macdonald.
The reader learns that Macbeth is related to King Duncan.
O valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman! (I, ii, 24). At this point, Macbeth is held in high regard by
Duncan.
Macbeth won against the attack of the Norwegian King.
The Thane of Cawdor has betrayed Duncan by fighting on the Norwegian side.

Causes Of Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer occurs when malignant (cancerous) cells develop within the tissues of the pancreas.
The pancreas produces digestive juices and hormones that regulate blood sugar. Cells called exocrine
pancreas cells produce the digestive juices, while cells called endocrine pancreas cells produce the
hormones. The majority of pancreatic cancers start in the exocrine cells. (WebMD, 2015) Pancreatic
cancer is the cause of the 4th most cancer deaths in the United States of American with a median of
six or less months and a 5 year survival rate of 4.6%. The lethal nature of pancreatic cancer stems
from its propensity to rapidly disseminate to the lymphatic system and distant organs. (Sarkar, 2007)
The most common form of pancreatic cancer is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Two of the main pancreatic hormones are insulin, which acts to lower blood sugar, and glucagon,
which acts to raise blood sugar. Maintaining proper blood sugar levels is crucial to the functioning of
key organs including the brain, liver, and kidneys. (Columbia, 2015)
In pancreatic cancer, cancer cells in the pancreas grow and multiply quickly, which can cause a tumor
to grow. In stage 4 pancreatic cancer, a cancerous tumor has begun in the pancreas and has spread
beyond the pancreas into parts of the body far from the pancreas. It may also have spread to the lymph
nodes and the organs and tissues found near the pancreas. The effect of this tumor on the body
depends on where the tumor is, how it has spread, and how large it is. If the tumor blocks the flow of
bile, which is produced in the

Quest for Personal Identity in Toni Morrison s the Bluest Eye
Post World War I, many new opportunities were given to the growing and
expanding group of African Americans living in the North. Almost 500,00
African Americans moved to the northern states between 1910 and 1920. This
was the beginning of a continuing migration northward. More than 1,500,000
blacks went north in the 1930 s and 2,500,00 in the 1940 s. Life in the
North was very hard for African Americans. Race riots, limited housing
resulting in slum housing, and restricted job opportunities were only a few
of the many hardships that the African American people had to face at this
time. Families often had to separate, social agencies were overcrowded with
people that all needed help, crime rates increased and many other ... Show more content on

`Crazy foo...my floor,

Her words were hotter and darker than the smoking berries. The little [white]
girl in pink started to cry. Mrs. Breedlove turned to her. `Hush, baby, hush.
Don t cry no more (Morrison 109). Her mother viewed Pecola as an obstacle
that had the potential to get in the way of her white charge s happiness and
consequently her happiness. Her mother refused to show any love to Pecola
because it might interfere with more important things. For a little girl, the
love of her mother is the most important love she can receive. Without that,
how can she think that she is worth anything at all?
Finally the rape by her father is the last evidence Pecola needs to believe
completely that she is an ugly unlovable girl. While in most cases a father
figure is one who little girls look to for guidance and approval, Cholly is
the exact opposite. He hurts Pecola in a physical way that in one attempt
measures up to the years of hurtful mockery. He took away from her the one
thing that was utterly and completely hers. After the rape, Pecola was never
even remotely the same:
She was so sad to see. Grown people looked away; children, those who were not
frightened by her, laughed outright. The damage done was total. She spent
her days, walking up and down her head jerking to the beat of a drummer so
distant only she could hear.

And Setting In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury
What if you could own a room, a room where whatever you thought took form? It would, of course,
not be real. But it would smell real, look real, and feel real. Would this be a room you would want?
Ray Bradbury, an author, tells of such a story using many different writing techniques. Ray Bradbury
uses setting, conflict, and foreshadowing to manipulate the plot of the story The veldt and make it
more interesting. Setting is an important part to any story whether it be fictional, sci fi ,romance, or
any story for that matter. But setting is more than just a place and a time. Setting is also how the
author saturates the story with mood and meaning. The setting for The Veldt is in a Happylife home,
where all actions are performed for them by machines. Tying shoes, cooking, all things are done for
them by machines. While this may sound like a pretty good place to live, it does have it s
shortcomings. It would give you no work ethic for starters. But in The Veldt the conflict only
surrounds the mechanical home to an extent. The conflict more pertains to a room in the known only
to the reader by the nursery . It is essentially a room where whatever you imagine comes to fruition.
The children in the story, or what the reader may deem the antagonists, have dreamt up a room of
Africa. Not the fun Africa with festivals and hotels either. The africa with lions that kill and a blazing
hot sun. This sort of setting puts across that the children in the story are very upset and are

Abundance Of Facilities For Outdoor Recreation And Leisure...
INTRODUCTION
This report examines the demographics of Ladera Ranch, California, analyzing population data to
prove that the community of Ladera Ranch is a good location to open a business. Based on this data,
the report will recommend the type of business that is best suited for the community. Ladera Ranch is
a census designated place located in south Orange County, California ( Ladera Ranch , 2012); nearby
cities include Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, and Rancho Santa Margarita. Construction of
Ladera Ranch began in 1999 with the goal of creating a community where residents enjoy recreational
parks, clubhouses, shopping, and outdoor trails for joggers, hikers and bikers ( City Guide , 2014).
The research compiled confirms that Ladera Ranch has an abundance of facilities for outdoor
recreation and leisure activities. However, based on its demographics, Ladera Ranch residents would
also benefit from having a local indoor Family Entertainment Center to complement its existing
infrastructure.
A team of five students from the BUAD 301 class at California State University, Fullerton
collaborated to gather data from a variety of resources for this report, analyze this data, and provide
recommendations for a future business venture. Sources such as the United States Census Bureau were
used to obtain demographic information for Ladera Ranch. All sources have been listed on the
reference page at the end of this report.
The report contains information for Ladera Ranch

Project Management Essay
Project Management
Although a development team does most of the work, it is the project manager that is running the
development process. All human activity that involves carrying out a project needs a plan. We call this
Project Management. But there is a big difference between projects that involve one or two people and
projects that involve large numbers of people. There is always a smaller group of individuals behind
all larger groups that is planning, directing, and motivating those people. There are three main parts to
project management: start date, finish date, and all the tasks that need to be carried out. When the plan
starts to involve different things happening at different times, most of which are dependant upon each

There is room to be creative and in many aspects of planning and leading.
The first step in planning a project could be specification. This is a term that can be defined as stating
the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of confusion in
this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project Management).
A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project showing that
everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be structure. Having
decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to be done and how to do
it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure also links all of the tasks
together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This creates a sense of unity among
your project team. To move forward with the planning process, you need to transform the
specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If the planning of a project becomes
too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be broken down into even smaller ones. This is
also a great way to learn each and every detail of the project. Planning too much detail could be a fault
by the project manager as well. You should just break it down as far enough for your team to
understand it. The next stage would be task

Racial Profiling Is A Breach Of Justice
Racial profiling is considered to be a breach of justice in the US. It is the use of someone s race or
ethnicity by law enforcement in deciding whether or not to stop, search, or arrest an individual. The
practice of racial profiling is still very controversial today and is considered illegal in many
jurisdictions. It is hard to say whether racial profiling is ethical or not. Profiling based on gender, race,
or ethnicity is just the way our minds work; it s natural. We create profiles of how we expect things to
be by quickly recalling our past experiences. We know that not every experience will fit into the
profiles we make in our heads but a lot of them do. Whether we like it or not, racial profiling has a
place in today s society in regards to crime solving and prevention.
One of the most common racial profiles is of African Americans being more likely to commit crimes.
This is a great example of a profile created over time due to facts and past experiences. If we look at
the number of homicides committed in the United States between 1974 and 2004, 52% of offenders
were black and 46% were white. (Threatcore, March 28, 2011, p. 1) Seems equal, right? However,
blacks made up only 12% of the population at this time while whites made up 80%. Racial profiling
doesn t just apply to African Americans. For example, do we assume that every Arab is a terrorist?
Since 9/11, Muslims and people of Arab descent have become targets through forms of racial
profiling. On December

Philippe Petit Research Paper
When people talk about the most influential person in their life, they usually mention people like their
Mom, Dad, Jesus, an uncle, or a friend. In other words, people they have met. I have never met
Philippe Petit. However, he is still one of the most influential people in my life. Philippe Petit is not a
name most people recognize, but the few that do know him as the man who walked between the Twin
Towers. Not on the ground, but on a tightrope 1,350 feet above the ground. On August 7, 1974,
Philippe preformed for 45 minutes making 8 passes along the wire during which he walked, danced,
lay down on the wire, and even knelt to salute onlookers below. I first discovered Petit through a

  • 2. Upton Sinclair s The Food Industry Mikayla Peri Ms. Maxwell English III 10. Feb. 2015 Upton Sinclair Upton Sinclair, the most influential writer regarding the food industry was born in Baltimore 1879. Growing up in a poor family with an alcoholic father was difficult for Upton (Simkin, John). Upton often lived with his wealthy grandparents during his childhood due to the instability in his own home. Moving from his poor parents house to his grandparents rich house constantly made him see the injustice in the American society, this made him become a radical socialist as young as his early teens. At 14, Upton being the intelligent and independent man he was, started attending New York City College. In order to make money to pay for his tuition, apartment, and still provide for his family, Upton sold magazines and news articles of his socialistic ideas. The childhood Upton struggled through with family and financial problems only made him strive to change the conditions of America in his writing. Sinclair s writing started to become very eminent in the early 1900 s, and by the age of 16 his book The Jungle changes the food industry forever. In 1905 Sinclair was hired to work in Packingtown Chicago for a meat processing company for a pay of $500 ( $13,513.51 today s money) (Upton Sinclair Hits Readers in the Stomach). For two months Sinclair worked in the meatpacking industry, afterwards, he went into solitude for nine months to write about the details of the industry. The meat would be shoveled into carts, ... But despite this effort substantial differences in countries reporting regulation and practices remain. This paper explores these differences and the reasons why they exist as well as why they are likely to persist in the foreseeable future. My analysis and comparison are conducted at a fairly high level to emphasise that reporting regulation is a part of a country s broader institutional framework. Throughout the paper, I give special emphasis to enforcement issues because of two related reasons. *The author is the J. • 4. The Neurological And Behavioral Changes Associated With... Sarah Walker Gordon Deecker INSC 3909 December 14, 2015 The Neurological and Behavioral Changes Associated with Learning Music as a Child Some would argue that humans are intrinsically wired to produce music. As an infant, the sounds children make while learning language mimic the tonal shape of language. Parents also tend to use exaggerated highs and lows in their voices much like a simple melody to prepare and help develop the infant s capacity to learn language. It has also been found that the neural networks used in language acquisition are very similar to those used in music acquisition (Mithen 2006). Language acquisition and development is imperative for an individual to survive, and if training the brain with music can strengthen those networks, this is a subject of great importance. Since the 1940s doctors have recognized the impacts of music on the behavior of patients with mental disabilities, and from this discovery, the effects of music on a regular developing brain became a subject of great interest. Researchers recognized that there was potentially an opportunity to increase brain development in children resulting in discernable enhancements of skills into adulthood (Reschke Hernandez, 2011). It is now known that childhood music education improves skills required for playing music, namely motor functioning, auditory discrimination, and long and short term recall. These skills, learned through music instruction, transfer to non musical skills such as verbal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Cathedral By Raymond Carver A New Perspective Everyone at one point has judged a book by its cover. In the short story, Cathedral , Raymond Carver creates a narrator who bases off ideas and assumptions about blind people from movies. The narrator has never interacted with a blind person before the day where his wife invites her friend, who is named Robert, to stay. The narrator and Robert have never met, but the narrator has a strong dislike towards Robert before meeting. The narrator s closed mindedness and misconceptions leads him to judge Robert, however after a few hours of interaction, the narrator learns more about him and grows to have a new perspective about people not being who they think they are. The narrator is pre judgemental towards all people who are blind, whether or not he has met them. He believes all blind people are the same as those he has watched in movies. The narrator perception of the blind is that they moved slowly and never laughed and when they went out they were led by seeing eye dogs (Carver 104). The movie industry creates a false image of the blind, which leads to the narrator s assumptions. However, the blind are not all the same, just like how everyone else in the world are not the same. People are designed to be different in their personalities, thoughts, looks and much more. The narrator s ideas of Robert are based off of false conceptions and this changes his attitude towards Robert. The narrator already has strong feelings towards Robert before meeting him ... • 6. Osmosis in Potato Tubers Osmosis in Potato Tubers Andrew Dickson Background When a plant cell is bathed in a solution of the same concentration (isotonic) as its intracellular environment, its mass and volume remain the same. This is because water enters and leaves the cells at the same rate. There is no net loss or gain of water by osmosis. Samples of cells can be placed in a range of solutions of different concentration. The cells will gain water by osmosis when placed in solutions which are more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment. They will therefore gain mass. The cells will lose water in those solutions that are more concentrated (hypertonic) than the intracellular environment and so lose mass. The concentration of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some of the potatoes expanded and increased in mass whilst others shrunk and decreased in mass. This was caused by the diffusion of water from the cells to the sucrose solution or vice versa through the process of osmosis. During osmosis water will diffuse across a semi permeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration. The potato cylinders in both test tubes A and B with sucrose concentrations of 0% and 5% respectively, had a noticeable increase in mass, whereas the potato in test tube C even though having an increase in mass, was only marginal. This suggests that the sucrose concentration in test tube C, which was 10%, is almost the same concentration (isotonic) as the potato s cells intracellular environment because the mass remains relatively the same. This is because the movement of water into and out of the cells occurs at the same rate and results in no net loss or gain of water by osmosis. This also implies that the potato cylinders in test tubes A and B where bathed in a sucrose solution that was more dilute (hypotonic) than the intracellular environment of the potato s cells. The cells of the potato in test tubes A and B gained water by osmosis and therefore gained mass. However, the results show that in test tubes D and E with sucrose concentrations of 15% and 20% respectively, that there was a decrease in mass of the potato cylinders. This was ... I do believe that people desire without fully understanding what desire is or how they came to that conclusion. People do learn how to comprehend everything, from the moment we were born, the new world and people become the basis of our learning and comprehension. The child looks around and learn all about the surrounding, then soaking it in like a sponge, just to understand the world we live in today. The need to protect is something that people feel throughout their lives, especially their families. Introduction The primary focus of this term paper consists of two parts. First, review chitosan based drug delivery system for the delivery of traditional low molecular weight drugs based on a review paper titled targeted delivery of low molecular drugs using chitosan and its derivatives (Advanced Drug delivery reviews, 2010). Second, critique an original research paper about hydrotropic oligomer conjugated glycol chitosan as a carrier for tumor targeted paclitaxel delivery, which was published in Journal of Controlled Release in 2013 (title: Enhanced drug loading and therapeutic efficacy of hydrotropic oligomer conjugated glycol chitosan nanoparticles for tumor targeted paclitaxel delivery). Chitosan, a linear aminopolysaccharide composed of randomly distributed (1→4) linked D glucosamine and N acetyl D glucosamine units, is obtained by the deacetylation of chitin, a structural element in the exoskeleton of crustaceans, which is the second most abundant natural biopolymer after cellulose (Fig. 1). The most easily exploited sources of chitin are the protective shells of crabs and shrimp. The primary aliphatic amines of chitosan can be protonated under acidic conditions (amine pKa is 6.3). Fig 1. Chemical structure of chitosan Research showed that long circulating macromolecules (polymer drug conjugates) and nano sized particulates (such as micelles and liposomes) accumulate passively at the ... It is a monetary compensation for the services rendered [1]. A worker may be paid Rs. 100 per day or Rs. 4500 per month. This is wage payment. The worker gives his services and takes payment called wage payment. Industrial workers are paid remuneration for their services in terms of money called wage payment. Wages are usually paid in cash at the end of one day, one month or one week. Money wage is the monetary compensation or price paid by the employer to his employee for the services rendered. Such compensation is also called wage or salary or reward ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is due to poverty, rising prices, mass unemployment and rising population. Wage payment indeed a vexatious problem and needs to be tackled from economic, social and humanistic angles. 1.2 CONCEPT OF FAIR WAGES: Fair wages is the wage which is above the minimum wage but below the living wage. Obviously the lower limit of the fair wage is the minimum wage and the upper limit is set by the ability of the industry to pay. Between these two limits, fair wages should depend on the factors like 1. Prevailing rates of wages in the same occupation 2. Prevailing rates of wages in the same region or neighbouring areas 3. Employers ability to pay 4. Level of national income and its distribution 5. Productivity of labour 6. Status enjoyed by the industry in the economy Hence it can be said that fair wages are determined on industry cum region basis. When fair wages are paid employees enjoy higher standard of living. It is accepted fact that wages must be fair and reasonable. Wages is fair when the employee is able to meet its essential needs and enjoy reasonable standard of living. Equal pay for equal work serves as base of fair wage [4]. 1.3 FACTORS INFLUENCING WAGE AND SALARY STRUCTURE [5] The organization s ability to pay: Wage increases should be given by those organizations which can afford them. Companies that have good sales and therefore high profits tend to pay higher wages than those which are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

However there were many factors in the build up to revolution in 1905. Prior to 1905, disturbances in Russia could have been seen as quite rare. Russia was though suffering from a long period of repression and unrest. From the implementation of tsarism in Russia, the regimes had slowly developed into more of an autocratic establishment which implemented it s will onto the people with lesser regard for human life and liberty. • 12. The Negative Analysis Of Alaska Airline Pilots At Alaska... For the past ten years, pilots at Alaska Airlines have been underpaid, and now, after merging with Virgin America, pilots are protesting Alaska s negligence. In 2005, Alaska pilots had pay cuts of 26% when the airline industry lost an estimated $7.4B (IATA, 2005) due to fuel price surges (James, Andrea, 2007). Since then, fuel prices have fallen significantly; pilots at Alaska have been paid less than those at other legacy airlines, such as Delta or United (Glassdoor, 2017). According to self reporting surveys, Alaska Airline pilots earn on average $107,860 a year while Virgin pilots earn around $100,00 a year (Glassdoor, 2017). Compared to a legacy airline like Delta, with an average pilot salary of $137,587 per year (Glassdoor, 2017), Alaska and Virgin do not pay their pilots competitively. The merger with Virgin increased dissatisfaction with their compensation, leading to pilots at Alaska speaking out against the company, specifically through the creation of an awareness campaign This Merger Won t Fly to rally against the inequitable pay ( This Merger Won t Fly , 2017). Pilots, backed by the support of their unions, are negatively impacting flights and consumers by leveraging their salience as stakeholders. In regards to the environmental factors, it is interesting that the majority of the participants rated background noise and loud sound as barriers, while majority rated family support, family attitude, and social attitude as facilitators that have a relevant influence on functioning. A thief approaches her from behind and snatches the leather handle of her purse from her grip. He dashes away as she helplessly watches him go. The woman does not call the police or even ask passersby for help. She knows no one will come to her aid, especially not the NYPD. Such a scenario is shocking and not a little discomforting, especially when placed in the jurisdiction of the nationally acclaimed New York Police Department. Unfortunately, such scenes of distress began to proliferate in late December of 2014 as the NYPD dramatically reduced the number of arrests made for petty crimes, such as purse theft. The police used the cutback as a response to a multitude of policy blunders from the office of Mayor de Blasio, many of which the NYPD considered offensive and inappropriate. Although the mayor s actions doubtless deserve more scrutiny, the police of New York City were devastatingly blind to the ethical implications of their rash decisions. By indulging in an egocentric worldview and morally disengaging from their decisions, the NYPD gave reign to emotion and released their wrath by endangering the population of their city. According to the New York Times, the NYPD s disrespect for Mayor de Blasio built gradually as errors and oversights slighting the police accumulated. The earliest federal gun control law was the National Firearms Act of 1934, which restrictive $200 tax on the manufacture or sale of machine guns and sawed off shotguns. • 20. The Increasing Need for Urban Planning 1. Introduction Quantitative urban studies are becoming increasingly important for planners knowing that in the year 2015 more than half the global population will be residing in cities [1]. Suitable urban planning ought to be a top priority for future development but unfortunately sound planning has not taken place especially in many African cities as heavy rural urban migration continues to cause cities to expand at uncontrollable rates [2]. As a consequence, the urban population in Africa is increasing at a much faster rate than in the rest of the world, contributing to the augmentation of the existing problems such as unsuitable land use [3]. The concentration of population in cities comprises as much as 60% of the total population in most countries. In these immense urban settlements the environmental and social consequences are sometimes disastrous [4]. Large cities in Africa such as Nakuru have experienced a fast growth rate of 13.3% between 1990 and 2006 [5]. The magnification has been attributed to a number of factors, mainly the aperture of the new Naivasha Nakuru road, which links the megacity of Nairobi. Post election violence is verbally expressed to be one of the contributing factors, since many displaced people from neighboring towns migrated to Nakuru as a safe shelter. The main consequences in these African cities include; urban sprawl, unsuitable land use, inadequate transportation systems, air and water pollution, depletion of natural resources, ... Many people have experienced discrimination against their age daily, even in schools and workplaces. Why is this important? Ageism can relate to everyone in the society; managers, employees, teachers, police officers, principles, etc. For example in a workplace, there are questions you are not allowed to ask during an interview, to your employees and coworkers, etc. Managers can get in trouble for saying stuff like you can t do this because your too young , forcing someone to retire due to their age, not interviewing someone due to their age, As an employer, you cannot be denied a job, training or promotion, or forced to retire, because of your age, etc. If you are experiencing age discrimination against you, you can make a human rights complaint by contacting the human rights tribunal of Ontario. • 23. U.s. Subprime Mortgage Crisis Essay The U.S. subprime mortgage crisis was a set of events and conditions that led to the late 2000s financial crisis, characterized by a rise in subprime mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures, and the resulting decline of securities backed by said mortgages. After U.S. housing sales prices peaked in mid 2006 and began their steep decline, refinancing became more difficult. As adjustable rate mortgages began to reset at higher interest rates, mortgage delinquencies soared. Securities backed with mortgages, including subprime mortgages, widely held by financial firms, lost most of their value. Global investors also drastically reduced purchases of mortgage backed debt and other securities as part of a decline in the capacity and willingness of the private financial system to support lending. Concerns about the soundness of U.S. credit and financial markets led to tightening credit around the world and slowing economic growth in the U.S. and Europe. The immediate cause or trigger of the crisis was the bursting of the United States housing bubble which peaked in approximately 2005 2006. Caused by an increase in loan incentives such as easy initial terms and a long term trend of rising housing prices had encouraged borrowers to assume difficult mortgages in the belief they would be able to quickly refinance at more favorable terms. Once interest rates began to rise and housing prices started to drop moderately in 2006 in many parts of the U.S., refinancing became more difficult. As ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This can be seen in all aspects of children lifestyles: games, sports, classroom settings, etc. Competition can be healthy in moderation, but too often children are only taught to win. However, the long term consequences of such a competitive culture are seldom thought of by parents. Placing too much emphasis on winning can destroy a child s view on hard work and team play, as well as destroy self esteem and confidence later on in life. In our society, competition is not beneficial for kids and must be discouraged, or we risk raising a generation grown on false hope. People argue that in order for our children to learn to succeed in life, we must train them from an early age. Matt Richtel s New York Times article mentions this. Many scholars agree that competition is necessary, ingrained and essential (Richtel, 2012). To some degree, this is true. We do need to train children to excel in all that they are capable of doing. However, if we were to allow for competition to be a part of the everyday lives of children, we must allow for it to occur only for self improvement. If we allow for competition, we must make it okay for them to lose. A platform for trial and error is necessary training. Sadly, not everyone has that mindset, and winning is the goal. We can t change everyone s mind about it, so we must work to discourage childhood competition altogether. In Competition Can Be a Positive Experience for Kids, Mark Cinelli analyzes the dynamics of competition, and states the type of competition that we need to see in Competition is a big part of our children s lives, and it s here to stay for a long time . . . We need to praise every effort by character, self esteem, a competitive spirit and a sense of fair play. In the novel The Old Man and the Sea written by the spokesman of this quote, it is truly demonstrated that a man can be destroyed but not defeated through the main character, Santiago. He is an older man who loves to fish and devotes most of his time to fishing. Unfortunately, he had not brought back a fish in over eighty days. This occurrence lead to his pupil Manolin s parents not allowing their son to fish with Santiago and also some other fishermen who thought he was a joke. Like Manolin s parents and also the other fisherman, many disbelievers think that the old man is unlucky, therefore it is not his fate to catch a worthy fish. They believe that it takes luck and fate to catch a fish. On the contrary, both Santiago and Manolin disagree as they believe that pride and ambition will help Santiago finally catch his dream fish. The theme of pride of ambition beating out their counterparts fate and luck is thoroughly expressed in all facets of this novel. Three main occurrences where the theme is present is when he still goes out even with his bad luck , when he continues to hang on to the fish he has hooked, and finally when he returns home and his pride and ambition is recognized by others. The first example of the theme being present in the book is when Santiago decides to still go out and fish. As the first sentence of the book states, He was an old man who fished alone in a ... For Proteins, Form Shapes Function Essay Proteins are fundamental components of all living cells that participate in some of the most important biological processes, including cell growth and maintenance, movement and defense. They are complex molecules that consist of one or more chains of amino acids, have distinct three dimensional shapes and whose structure and structural dynamics directly influence their specific function. Most proteins have a primary, secondary and tertiary structure, but some of them, like hemoglobin, also have a quaternary structure. The primary structure of a protein is represented by the ordered succession of its amino acids held together by covalent bonds. While in nature amino acids may possess either the D or L configuration, amino acids within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They also preserve the bond angles and the planar configuration of the peptide bond, as well as keep atoms from coming together so closely that they repel each other through Van der Waal s interactions. A protein s tertiary structure, the compact, biologically active and most stable form of the protein, results from further folding of the amino acid chain. The environment in which a protein is synthesized and allowed to folded is a significant determinant of its final shape. If the tertiary structure of a protein is disrupted, the protein is said to be denatured, and it loses its activity. Based on their tertiary structure, proteins can be classified as globular, fibrous and membrane proteins. Globular proteins participate in sophisticated processes such as enzyme mediated catalysis, transport of molecules, signal transduction, defense and regulation. In order to function properly, these proteins need to be compact, soluble and able to form active sites. Proteins of the cytosol need a dense enough structure in order to be able to coexist alongside other components of the cytosol, yet still retain their ability to diffuse freely. In addition to being highly crowded, the environment of cytosolic proteins is also aqueous, which requires them to be water soluble, so as to prevent aggregation and sedimentation. Most of the protein functions involve molecular ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He puts effort in being friends with his co workers through compliments, siding with them, and appearing humble. Whether that was his imagination or not, he wants to be a role model to other aspiring journalists yet at the end it fell apart as he was exposed for his frauds. • 52. And Setting In The Veldt By Ray Bradbury What if you could own a room, a room where whatever you thought took form? It would, of course, not be real. But it would smell real, look real, and feel real. Would this be a room you would want? Ray Bradbury, an author, tells of such a story using many different writing techniques. Ray Bradbury uses setting, conflict, and foreshadowing to manipulate the plot of the story The veldt and make it more interesting. Setting is an important part to any story whether it be fictional, sci fi ,romance, or any story for that matter. But setting is more than just a place and a time. Setting is also how the author saturates the story with mood and meaning. The setting for The Veldt is in a Happylife home, where all actions are performed for them by machines. Tying shoes, cooking, all things are done for them by machines. While this may sound like a pretty good place to live, it does have it s shortcomings. It would give you no work ethic for starters. But in The Veldt the conflict only surrounds the mechanical home to an extent. The conflict more pertains to a room in the known only to the reader by the nursery . It is essentially a room where whatever you imagine comes to fruition. The children in the story, or what the reader may deem the antagonists, have dreamt up a room of Africa. Not the fun Africa with festivals and hotels either. The africa with lions that kill and a blazing hot sun. This sort of setting puts across that the children in the story are very upset and are ... All human activity that involves carrying out a project needs a plan. We call this Project Management. But there is a big difference between projects that involve one or two people and projects that involve large numbers of people. There is always a smaller group of individuals behind all larger groups that is planning, directing, and motivating those people. There is room to be creative and in many aspects of planning and leading. The first step in planning a project could be specification. This is a term that can be defined as stating the problem or what is trying to be solved by this particular project. There can be a lot of confusion in this stage of project planning, such as the misunderstanding of intent (Winning Project Management). A way to avoid such conflict is to maybe write out an agreement before the project showing that everyone understands exactly what is to be expected. The next step would be structure. Having decided the many specifications, it is time to figure out exactly what needs to be done and how to do it. There has to be some kind of framework built by the manager. Structure also links all of the tasks together instead of everything being done on individual basis. This creates a sense of unity among your project team. To move forward with the planning process, you need to transform the specifications into a complete set of tasks that are linked together. If the planning of a project becomes too complicated then that means that the tasks need to be broken down into even smaller ones. This is also a great way to learn each and every detail of the project. Planning too much detail could be a fault by the project manager as well. You should just break it down as far enough for your team to understand it. The next stage would be task ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. Racial Profiling Is A Breach Of Justice Racial profiling is considered to be a breach of justice in the US. It is the use of someone s race or ethnicity by law enforcement in deciding whether or not to stop, search, or arrest an individual. The practice of racial profiling is still very controversial today and is considered illegal in many jurisdictions. It is hard to say whether racial profiling is ethical or not. Profiling based on gender, race, or ethnicity is just the way our minds work; it s natural. We create profiles of how we expect things to be by quickly recalling our past experiences. We know that not every experience will fit into the profiles we make in our heads but a lot of them do. Whether we like it or not, racial profiling has a place in today s society in regards to crime solving and prevention. One of the most common racial profiles is of African Americans being more likely to commit crimes. This is a great example of a profile created over time due to facts and past experiences. If we look at the number of homicides committed in the United States between 1974 and 2004, 52% of offenders were black and 46% were white. (Threatcore, March 28, 2011, p. 1) Seems equal, right? However, blacks made up only 12% of the population at this time while whites made up 80%. Racial profiling doesn t just apply to African Americans. For example, do we assume that every Arab is a terrorist? Since 9/11, Muslims and people of Arab descent have become targets through forms of racial profiling. On December ...
