The document discusses plans for a music video for a rock song. It will have both a narrative storyline of a boy discovering his girlfriend cheating, as well as performances by the band. Research was conducted on locations, costumes, themes and conventions common to rock music videos. The narrative will be told through flashbacks and cuts between the story and band's performance to keep the audience engaged. The target audience is 16-21 year old single males who enjoy rock music.
We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

3. This song in particular has elements of
electronica alongside elements of rock. As
this is the case, we saw potential to do a
number of different things with the song. In
numerous parts of this song, the pace
changes; becoming more up beat and faster
in tempo which allows us to create different
speeds of narrative. The song enables overall
inspiration for different videos because of
how the song is structured.
4. Our music video will be structured in a performance/narrative layout which allows the
promotion of the band, and the engagement of the audience through the use of a
narrative. Having both performance of the band and a narrative allows us to display our
knowledge that we have gained from our research.
The narrative to the music will follow the scenario of a teenage boy walking home. This
then leads onto him finding his girlfriend cheating. After a series of arguments through
flashbacks and inserts of performance to break it up. Near the end of the song we see the
boy go to a party where his girlfriend shows up, they have one final argument and the song
ends. However, through the use of crosscutting and flashbacks, the audience will get an
overall idea of how the day progressed as the narrative will not be told chronologically.
In terms of performance, our main aim is to showcase the star. In order to achieve this, we
are going to have the band perform in an empty room which forces the audience to focus
on them and not the surroundings. We will also include close up shots of the singer
combined with high angles of the rest of the band. We are also aiming to try to put some of
the band in the narrative and have them lip sync the lyrics as if they were talking. This
ensures that the band always has presence in the video and helps to showcase them.
5. When we looked into the brand image of this particular band, we found them to be quite
abstract and gothic.Their album covers continue to follow the theme of their genre in
advertising themselves to their selected audiences. The convers all follow similar themes of
“calligraphy” as their main art type; colours being “out side the box” and unique in
comparison to modern day album covers. The costume of this band are generally conveyed
in a casual way through the use of shirts and jeans in their music videos and in live
performances. We then hope to convey this same idea by using the same types of clothing
on our made up band and on our actors in our music video. The “outside the box” ideas can
then be continued solely on the use of camera angles and camera movements, giving a
twist on a modern day concept and giving it that “twisted” edge thatThe Used have been
commonly recognised for.
6. Upon researchingThe Used, we also came across other bands in this genre who
had made a sizeable impact on the way that music videos were created. One of
these bands were Wheatus with their most popular song “Teenage Dirtbag”.This
video poses most of wat we aim to do in our video, giving the music video shots
of the band performing in numerous locations alongside a narrative that involves
actors lip syncing. The song “American Idiot” by Green Day gave us some of the
inspiration for the camera angles that we can use. Mainly the 360° dolly around
the drummer. The inspirations for the costumes come partly from the brand
image but we also took ideas from videos like “Smells LikeTeen Spirit” by Nirvana
as they share similar band images and ideas asThe Used. The costumes that they
use are quite simple and fit in with their genre really well.
7. As we have two main parts of the music video, the narrative and the performance, we need at least 4
different locations that are used.We carried out some research to find out what people expect to see in
the rock genre. The first question that we asked people was “What locations would you expect to see in
the narrative side of a rock music video?”, below is the graph. As you can see, the highest number of
people told us that they would expect to see some of it happen in a bedroom. The second highest said
the streets. As we found this out, we have incorporated both of these locations into our video. We have
put the streets in at the beginning at the video where the boy is walking down them and, obviously, most
of the arguments between the boy and girl will take place in the bedroom.
The second question we asked was “What locations would you expect to see the performance side of a
rock video?”, below is the graph. The highest number of people told us that they would expect to see the
band playing the song in a empty room. The second highest told that they expected an abandoned
place. We fit the empty room at the start of the song, mainly in the verses and the chorus. However, we
felt that the abandoned space did not really fit the feel of this particular song so we have decided to
adapt it to the streets, having the band lip sync while the actor walk past. The overall amount of people
asked was 36.

8. After asking them about the locations, we them asked them the same questions about the costumes that the people in
the video should wear.We asked them 3 questions; “How do you expect a boy in the narrative side of a rock video to
dress?”, “How do you expect a girl in the narrative side of a rock video to dress?” and “How do you expect the band to
dress in rock video?”. Instead of asking for each member of the band, we decided to ask for them as a unit as it could be
easier to dress them.
As you can see from the first graph, people expect a boy to dress in casual clothes. This means things like jeans and t-
shirts. Considering that it is a rock song, we decided to also include things like hoodies just to add extra to the costumes.
From the second graph, we got answers for how people expect to see the girl dress. From the results that we gathered, we
found that people also expect to see the girl in the narrative in casual clothes. The type we thought of were baggy shirts
and jeans or leggings.
The last graph shows what people expect the band to dress in the rock video. The audience told us that they expect the
band to dress in something that matches the brand image. We fully agree with this option as it allows us to display the
entire image of the band.

9. The main theme that we are portraying is the idea of
relationships. However, instead of it being a “boy
meets girl” scenario, it is a breakup scenario. This
challenges the themes of some rock videos and even
some videos from other genres.
Another theme that we are using is alcohol. Although
we will not have any of the actors physically consume
alcohol, we can still have the bottles for the effect.
Along with this, we also get the theme of parties or
teenagers always having house parties. This is a
common convention in rock videos.
10. Things that are most commonly seen in rock
videos and that we are going try to include
are things like:
Handheld cameras that give a shaky effect
when filming the band
Close ups on the lead singer or their eyes
Common mise en scene elements like t-shirts
and jeans on actors and the band, the band
performing in empty spaces and the band
being in a separate place to the acting
11. The technical conventions that we are going
to use in this music videos are:
Close ups of the band and singers
Match on actions people completing tasks
Synchronous actions with the beat of the
song
Dollies using skateboard and office chairs
Pans and tilts to emphasise the bands
importance
12. Our target audience are 16-21 year old single
males that enjoy rock music. We found this out
from a series of questions on a questionnaire
that we handed out.We plan on attracting them
by using the previously discussed technical and
genre conventions. If we include these then we
will meet our target audiences prior
expectations. Also, we feel that, through the use
of costumes and narrative, we will be able to
appeal to them as the narrative is something
that some of these people may have gone
through in their own lives.
