2. Introduction
In this research I will be researching two different well-known directors for music
videos. I will see their style of work and how they use different methods to structure
their music video work. Also how successful they are in terms of ratings and critical
acclaim. This research will help me in giving inspiration for my music video production
work and see how directors use different methods in producing a music video. Overall
I hope to gain some knowledge and adapt the style of each of these music video
directors in my way.
3. David Camarena
David Camarena is a highly praised music video director as well as a photographer and filmmaker. He
has worked with many famous artists for their music videos such as Wiz Khalifa, Kehlani and fifth
harmony. His style is very different than other music video directors as he uses many vivid coloured
toned lighting as well as the use of dark shadows for the background and for the artist. He also uses
very low light exposures to his music videos but adds a variety of bright abnormal lights which help
increase the visual of the videos and make them more appealing to the audience. Furthermore his
style uses a old feeling filter which diverts from the usual music videos which are bright and high
contrast which is normally seen in average high quality music videos. Lastly his editing uses many
turning and spinning of the camera as well as abnormal cuts and zoom ins and outs of the video which
makes his style a more weird and abstract approach to editing. Also the use of symmetrical scenes
where he adds multiple images of the same scene to create a illusion and abstract feel to his work. He
said that his style in a interview was “ Anything goes”
4. His work of style is distinct than others because of how it uses vivid lightings and bright abstract
colours to his work which normal music videos don’t usually have since they are more real life and
clear to the eye. Again he has worked with many famous artists for their music videos such as Wiz
Khalifa, Kehlani and fifth harmony
I think that David Camarena is a very successful music video director mainly because he has
worked with very famous artists throughout his career and mainly worked with Wiz Khalifa often
with his music videos. Furthermore he was also interviewed by MTV for the behind the scenes of
Kehlani’s music video which shows that many people praise his work of art in music videos he
directs. His most popular music video is Chapo (2014) by Wiz Khalifa feat. Berner which gained
over 22million views on YouTube and also the newly released Fifth harmony song Angel which now
has 21million views and the official music video was directed by David Camarena himself which
shows that he is widely known and talented to produce great music videos.
5. Colin Tiley
Colin Tilley is an award winning music video director who has written and directed music videos for
artists including Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Diddy,
Usher, Melanie Fiona, Keri Hilson, Future, Wiz Khalifa, DJ Khalid, DJ Snake, Kendrick Lamar and UK
rappers Chipmunk and Dappy among others. Furthermore he is a is a Grammy-nominated American
music video director, commercial director, and filmmaker who has created award-winning work with
other artists and companies.
I would describe Colin Tiley’s style of work to be a variety of things since each of his music video feels
widely different but also keeps his methods and aspects the same. For instance his music video
Anaconda by Niki Minaj was widely appraised and won the MTV 2015 best hip-hop award compared to
his other music video Alright by Kendrick Lamar which won MTV 2015 best director award and also
many others. The two music videos are hugely different and I think that Colin Tiley's style is that he likes
to work around the artist themselves and express their personality and traits into the music video
instead of something out of the blue. He creates a music video suited for both the music itself and the
artist and combines the two to create a perfect sense which appeals to the audience. His newly directed
music video Wild Thoughts by DJ Khalid shows this by having many effects and editing skills to arrange
the music and the video in sync to create a suitable and linking to the two which distinct him from other
music video directors alike. Overall his style cant be specialised into 1 specific style because he has so
many different types and that I think his style is that he can create a variety of styles that represent the
music and the artist.
6. In terms of success, Colin is probably in the top of successful music video directors because of the amount
of artists he worked with and the amount of music videos he created and also huge awards which he has
been nominated and also won. His most successful work he has done was Alright by Kendrick Lamar in
which he was nominated for a Grammy for best music video. The music video won Camerimage Film
Festival for "Video of the Year“, Camerimage Film Festival for "Best Cinematography", UK Music Video
Award for Best Urban Video, UK Music Video Award for Video of the Year and UK Music Video Award for Best
Cinematography. Other such as Anaconda and Wild Thoughts were hugely successful and was nominated
for many awards. His many other works also won awards and nominations as well as he was nominated for
three videos at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards including best male video, best hip-hop video, and best
collaboration video.
7. Conclusion
Overall I think that the music video director which I admire the most would be David Camarena.
This is because his style gives me many ideas and ways to produce my music video I will be
creating. An example is the way he uses lighting and shadow in his music video in a way I want
to recreate that style into my own work. Furthermore the use of vivid and abnormal colours I like
a lot and I would like to implement these also into my music video. Lastly the way the
camerawork and editing from his music videos are very different than other music videos since
it uses different ways such as many turning and spinning of the camera as well as abnormal
cuts and zoom ins and outs of the video. Also the symmetrical scenes in some of his videos I
want to implement into my own to create a more abstract and eye appealing to my work.
However I also like Colin Tiley because of the way he creates music videos based on the artist
and the music itself to create simplicity and more understandable which I also would like to
implement in my music video.
