The video is choreographed to be seductive and sexual. This is conveyed
through the use of camera angles. When Lady gaga sings the line ‘I’ll get him
hot, show him what I got’ the camera zooms in and out. This shot is used to
get the audience to focus on her body and the movements she is showing
which are ‘sexual’ as she is going up and down on the chair. The use of long
angles in long straight takes are used to show the entire of the singers body.
This challenges the conventions of music videos as the camera never usually
stops moving. Doing this allows focus onto the singers body and their dance
moves.

3. When she is walking through the blinds it is a tracking shot. As she walks the
camera watches her go through and try’s to follow her in. This establishes the
scene but blocks the audience off, this depicts that you cannot come in and
she is hiding something. This highlights the idea of her having a ‘poker face’
as you don’t know what is going on.

4. EDITING
The music video matches the song. This is done to link the lyrics of the video
to create some form of link without the use of a narrative. In the long
establishing, shots lady gaga is slowly climbing out of the pool. These shots
have quick edits and go along with the fast beat of the song. His also adds
more character to the shots the angle is straight and establishing. It beaks up
the scene slightly as the camera would commonly be continuously moving in
music videos. The edits are also in time with the song as she says ‘ma ma
ma ma’; the shot changes each time. The quick edits highlight her quirkiness
as an artist. This is a way of which the artist can sell themselves as they’re
recognised for common tweaks they have in their videos. The robotic sounds
match the movements of her body and how it’s been edited.

5. MISE-EN-SCENE
When the video opens, Lady gaga is shown in a slow motion, long shot with
Great Dane dogs on either side of her. These dogs are well known for being
powerful, and strong. This could represent her being powerful as she is
walking in front of them conveys they’re there to protect her, indicating that
she important and powerful. The dogs could also represent the men in the
video as the man obeys her like the men do.
The use of curtains used in one of the scene corresponds with the lyrics. The
artist walks through the curtains but cuts off the inside of the room to the
audience. This corresponds with the title “poker face” as the audience cannot
see the inside of the room.

6. Continuing mise-en-scene, Lady gaga is the only person to wear bright
colours and to have light coloured hair. This is in contrast with all of the actors
in the video being dressed in black and having darker hair. This makes the
artist stand out from the rest of the people in the shot and to make the
audience focus on her.
Another example of this is when Lady gaga is seen sitting on a while chair in
a very white back ground. She is wearing black which is the opposite colour
to white. Doing this also makes the artist stand out and applies focus of the
audience onto her.

7. When the man leans back into her she is in control. This depicts that she is
more important than him as he has cowered into her. As she is higher than
him it highlights that she can get him to do whatever she wants with him and
that he is within her grasps; if she was to do anything, she will do it to him
first. He cannot see through her but she can see through him. He falls for her
as he leans up to kiss her. This conveys the man to be weak to the artist as
she is irresistible.
She sings ‘no he can’t read my poker face’ this depicts that she is the
dominant character as he doesn’t understand what is going on and he is still
falling for her. It shows the males in the video to be oblivious and still wanting
Lady gaga.

The genre of this song is dance pop and this is represented through the beats
and dances. One of the costumes the artist is seen is blue and silver. This is
for a electronic, and glamorous look which gives a modern look. The genre of
the song is represented through costume. Some of the main genre
conventions in the music video is dancers and unique clothing to show the
quirkiness of the video in link to the artist. Also the video focuses on the artist
– Lady Gaga in every scene with many close ups. These conventions are
associated with the dance pop genre. Close ups are common conventions of
the pop genre.

“Bwin.com ” is clear intertextuality to a website being advertised within the
video. This company is highlighted within the music video as it’s related to
poker. The fact this was displayed my convey the success of the website and
want to get more publicity. A great deal of money would have to be used to
advertise within this video. As Bwin is advertised in the video they would
have sponsored her, this depicts that good companies want to be associated
with her – the website is good enough for Lady gaga to approve..

10. Beats by Dre headphones are also shown in the music video. There is a
close up of her taking the headphones of someone while looking into the
camera. This long pause of her looking attracts the audience to the
headphones. Beats are expensive and are known for being good quality, this
highlights that she only associates with the best. The intertextuality she has
used within the music video represents them well as they are associated with
poker and music. It also conveys beats to be good enough for her and her
music.
