Suspense And Forshadowing In The Landlady By Roald Dahl
Oh, I am, my dear, I am, of course I am. But the trouble is I m inclined to be just a teeny weeny bit
choosy and particular if you know what I mean. (pg 174, Dahl). The Landlady by Roald Dahl creates
suspense and foreboding with Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old businessman, looking for a place to
stay when he comes to Bath, England around nine o clock in the evening. On Billy s way to the Bell
and Dragon, a pub, he spots a illecebrous Bed and Breakfast which his eyes get transfixed by. He
enters the strange house to be greeted by a dotty debilitated lady. Roald Donald creates suspense and
foreboding with divine imagery and inconspicuous foreshadowing. But the air was deadly cold and the
air was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks. (pg 171, Dahl). Firstly, we have the use of deadly cold,
which is imagery. It s a peculiar use of words, using deadly. Why is it deadly? It creates an eerie tone
and mood to the story. When you first read you glance over it, but subsequently you realize the
imagery was foreshadowing and creating a foreboding feeling. Secondly, the mention of flat blade is
another abnormal choice of words. Blade? Why blade? Blade, of course, because she uses a blade to
stuff creatures, and more importantly people. Although we only detect this later, this foreshadowing
creates a sense of foreboding, whether you notice it or not, because your subconscious realizes the
idiosyncratic word choice. Thirdly, they say flat ice blade against his cheeks. It s

Hatred Hell into Lovely Heaven Essay
Starts from Why do they hate me? , and then grows into Why can t they give me another chance? and
ends up with I will take revenge! that is how humans hatred toward other person caused him/her to do
evils. When humans start to think about taking revenge, they will think of the worst thing they can do
to those who they want to take revenge to, and there is a possibility that they want to kill them too.
Imagine how if everyone in this world has that kind of feeling, the world will be in chaos. Of course
no one wants to have a chaotic world to live in, so how can we make a peaceful world? As social
beings, humans hearts, minds and attitudes are affected by how other people feel and act toward them.
Humans tend to do and feel the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The other effect is when someone is loved she/he will feel happy, and the happiness makes humans
healthy (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 17:22). The most important effect is that love can change other
people into better people that can lead into a better world. All of you should know that love s enemy is
hatred. When love gives so many benefits, hatred gives bad results. One of the different results is love
makes peace while hatred can cause a war. All people should know the fact that hating other people is
bad, but why many people still hate each other? To love others is not a piece of cake, before humans
can love others they need to love themselves, and before they can love themselves rightly they should
love God (Matthew 22:37 39). Therefore, the key of loving others is by loving God wholly. In the
novel Les Miserables, Jean Valjean who loves Cossette and Javert who hates Jean Valjean give a good
example to explain about the different result between love and hate. Jean Valjean got happiness from
loving Cossette (Hugo, page 332), while Javert could not feel peace and ended up committing suicide
(Hugo, page 284). Jean Valjean used to be a man who was filled with hatred, so he kept stealing and
did bad things. But after he was changed by love he tried as good as he can to help people around him
and he also quoted ... Love each other dearly always. There is scarcely anything else in the world but
that: to love one

Innovative Approaches Of Resistance And The Reorganization...
Through innovative approaches of resistance and the reorganization of the anti apartheid movement
and the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela helped bring an end to apartheid, an oppressive
form of government that promoted systematic segregation and institutionalized racism in South Africa.
The Afrikaans word apartheid means separateness, and during the period of the apartheid, people were
classified and separated into different racial groups where the civil and human rights of non whites
were curtailed (Clark and Worger xxi). Although apartheid started in 1948, the roots of inequality were
presented years before as a result of Dutch and British control. Both countries colonized South Africa
in order to control South Africa s lucrative and, generally, untapped mining industry. South African
workers, including the skilled and unskilled, were forsaken to work menial jobs and receive low
wages (34). The establishment of many unfair laws allowed for the takeover to occur; these laws mark
the beginning of apartheid and many more discriminatory regulations that were to come which
include, but are not limited to, pass laws, laws that required non whites to have identification that
showed their right to be in certain areas, and the exclusion of the non white vote (McCuen 17 18).
The daily lives of all South Africans were severely altered with the initiation and administration of
apartheid. Even the simple things like where a person could live, type of work, or places a person

The Rise Of Anti Semitism
With the rise of anti Semitism and the pogroms targeting European Jews in the late 1800s, there were
many Jewish theorists and practitioners arose to find the ultimate solution for the Jewish question . In
addition, the derived tension between the personal life of a Jew and the public life amongst secular
society was the main challenge facing European Jewry. As a result of the long term process through
which Jews attempted to resolve the tension between their personal and public lives in a secular
society wrought with anti Semitism, the Zionist Movement emerged on the world scene lead by many
intellectual and respected key figures. Among them, Theodore Herzl and Ahad Ha Am were the two
most prominent Zionist leaders. They both shared the same idea of nationalism where it was time for
all European Jews to unite and be recognized as a nation. Although having a sense of national
consciousness to unite the displaced Jews, their visions were completely opposite. The Zionist Idea, a
text by Arthur Hertzberg, described their different visions in term of mass evacuation, statehood,
religion, and culture. Both Herzl and Ha Am agreed on one thing, it was time for the European Jews
unite against the European oppressors. As Herzl writes: A more serious objection would be that I am
giving aid and comfort to the anti Semites when I say we are a people one people. As the height of anti
Semitism in Europe, Herzl understood the severity of the problem for the Jews to live in Europe. In

IDS Financial Services Case Study
Situational Analysis Introduction: IDS Financial Services operate in the consumer financial service
industry. After the acquisition by American Express in 1984 the company went through tremendous
growth for three consecutive years in terms of revenue (average 30%), financial plan fees (174%) and
its sales force (annual rate11%). The company was facing new challenges as to how to maintain this
30 percent growth rate in the market place where the competition was increasing day by day. The
consumer financial industry is growing very fast which creates new opportunities to be exploited.
With this the competition is also growing as the competitors are becoming more and more aggressive
in marketing and selling their products. Now the company ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To achieve the target of 30% growth in revenues one of the options with Saunders is to expand his
Sales force. This expansion plan might be curbed internally as it goes against the other key objective
of reducing cost. Saunders would have to put across this expansion as an investment and not a cost.
He should also reiterate the fact that IDS competitors are doubling their sales force. Saunders would
probably face a challenge to change the complex salary structure of the planners as well. It is critical
that this complex structure be simplified and the remuneration benefits be clearly shown (to the sales
force) if Saunders has to curb attrition (attrition rates being high the expected growth might not be
possible). He might face a hurdle in this regard due to the fact that a complex system would have been
put in place to handle all the paper work e.g. there are 150 different commission schedules but general
repulsion to change in the workplace would be a hurdle. Here, Saunders could emphasize that keeping
the sales force is all important especially since: Big players like Merrill Lynch have also started
operating in the middle market and IDS has to consolidate its position there. This is possible only with
a trained retainable work force. If IDS has to target the higher market of high net worth individuals
where it has a smaller presence, then retaining trained personnel is all the more important The fact that
this investment would help

Animals In Captivity
Should animals live in their natural environment, or should they live in man made environment? Some
people believe animals should live in captivity, but animals that live in the wild get to live more
naturally. They should live in the wild instead of living in captivity, so they are not tampered with by
humans as much. It would keep the environment the way it should be. If you take predators out of an
environment, the environment will be over run with other animals because the other animals
population will not be controlled. Animals should live in the wild and not in captivity. Animals should
live in the wild including endangered animals, instead of captivity. Some people believe animals
should be taken care of in captivity because it is to dangerous for them in the wild. Animals do not
truly belong in a cage. It is not fair for the animal to live in captivity because the animal would not be
able to roam freely like it could if it lived in the wild. If an animal can not make it in the wild, it needs
to either adapt to the wild or die which is a way of the population controlling itself. Animals are meant
to live in the wild. Once you put a animal in captivity and then decide to release it, the animal will
probably die because it does not know how to hunt for food, and will not be able to defend itself
against other animals. If animals do not have enough room to roam around, they can become sick and
depressed. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some animals will die faster in captivity than in the wild because of changes in the environment. The
natural food chain in the wild will get messed up because there might not be enough predators or prey.

their normal diet, and will lose a bunch of strength because of a different diet and not enough

ANALIZ TEXT INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS
TEXT INTERPRETATION AND ANALYSIS
The purpose of Text Interpretation and Analysis is a literary and linguistic commentary in which the
reader explains what the text reveals under close examination. Any literary work is unique. It is
created by the author in accordance with his vision and is permeated with his idea of the world. The
reader s interpretation is also highly individual and depends to a great extent on his knowledge and
personal experience. That s why one cannot lay down a fixed model for a piece of critical
appreciation. Nevertheless, one can give information and suggestions that may prove helpful.

be accomplished in a single sentence or paragraph, or, in the case of some novels, occupy an entire
chapter or more. Some plots require more exposition than others. A historical novel set in a foreign
country several centuries ago obviously needs to provide the reader with more background
information than a novel with a contemporary setting. COMPLICATION: The complication which is
sometimes referred to as the rising action, breaks the existing equilibrium and introduces the
characters and underlying or inciting conflict (if they have not already been introduced by the
exposition). The conflict is then developed gradually and intensified. CRISIS: The crisis (also referred
to as the climax) is that moment at which the plot reaches its point of greatest emotional intensity; it is
the turning point of the plot, directly precipitating its resolution. FALLING ACTION: Once the crisis
has been reached, the tension subsides and the plot moves toward its appointed conclusion.
RESOLUTION: The final section of the plot is its resolution; it records the outcome of the conflict
and establishes some new equilibrium or stability (however tentative and momentary). The resolution

Process Essay-Giddy Up Cowboy
Giddy Up Cowboy YEEH HAAA! We all have watched those crazy western, old time movies, and
wanted to be able to get on and ride off into the sunset just like the Indians, cowboy or the wanted
rebels. Don t even shake your head, you know you have. Well just your luck, I am here to help you out
with that. Getting your horses, or a donkey works too, ready to ride can sometimes be a dreaded
process however; once you re on, and have the wind in your hair and the cold crispy fall breeze on
your face, it will all be worth the extensive process it takes to go through. Okay first you have to
retrieve or fetch your animal of choice you are going to be riding, such as a donkey or a horse. I would
prefer a horse, but it s your right as an American to choose. Catching the horse/ donkey will not
always be easy and may end up being the hardest part of the process. If the animal is not locked up in

This part should not just be a two minute process. This is when you make your connections with

starting this hobby, this is a crucial part; unless you want to be on the ground half way through your
ride. So when you are grooming your animal of choice, take time to talk to them. They won t

talking make sure you are actually grooming them. It is extremely important to get two certain places
which includes: their hoofs and their back where the saddle is placed. If you were to forget every other
spot somehow, you would make it out alive. The one last thing to include with grooming is to make
sure you use fly spray. This is a key step! Without it horses/ donkeys will get utterly upset and this is

The Evolution and Corruption of Collegiate Sports Essay
The twenty first century has produced a society driven by economic success, capitalism, and class and
power disparity. Social institutions reflect these ideologies. The world of sport, in particular, has been
severely impacted by the corporate mentality, transforming it from a game run by athletes to a big
business where the decision making rests in the hands of national organizations and flows towards the
sources of revenue. Sports have become more like work than play, with the primary emphasis being
placed on winning rather than playing. Winning attracts spectators and media, thereby bringing in
more money. This has forced an evolution in the world of sports. First, one must look at the world of
sport from its conception in order ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is easy to understand why participation in sport is encouraged by parents, administrators, and
community leaders (Frey and Eitzen 506). Sport is also seen as a trigger for socialization, introducing
children of all ages. It is perceived to build character, develop morals, and shape one s personality,
while transmitting the values and morals of the dominant culture to its participants. Sport in the 21st
century has developed so far that there are now infinite levels of competition. Sport on the
professional level serves as the model after which all other levels of sport imitate. Professional sport is
a multi billion dollar business with money generated from advertising, media coverage, gambling,
ticket sales and other forms of merchandise. Sport s purpose is rapidly becoming more of a
commercial pursuit with the intention of making money rather than adhering to its original purpose of
enjoyment and play. A major source of revenue for professional and collegiate teams is the media.
Television has had an enormous effect on the world of sport. Over the years sports have taken
blossomed as marketable powerhouses. In 1980, for instance, sports programming was broadcast by
three major television networks for a total of 787 hours. In 1989, those three networks, plus the
addition of three others, broadcast 7341 hours of live sports programming (Frey and Eitzen 509). This
number has skyrocketed

Anabolic Steroid Use in Sports Summary
Anabolic Steroid use in Sports The competitive drive to win at all cost is fierce among athletes.
Winning at all cost often includes using one of many performance enhancing drugs such as anabolic
steroids. Many athletes use performance enhancing drugs, like steroids, to achieve higher goals and set
higher records than other drug free successful athletes. Although athletes are performing at higher
levels when using such drugs, what is the cost? Finally anabolic steroids should remain banned from
sports because their use results in many harmful side effects; because their use violates sports
regulations, and because their use can cause death. Anabolic steroids should remain banned from
sports because of the many harmful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another reason is the potential side effect caused by the use of anabolic steroids. Since the use of
steroids has become a trend among athletes, the number of deaths among them has risen. A lot of these
deaths are due to suicides and violent behavior as a result of the effect of these anabolic androgenic
steroids on mood. A number of recent, well publicized deaths of American football players have drawn
attention to the potential dangers of sports supplements and the raised important public health
concerns about the unrestricted availability of these products that are exempt from U. S. Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) regulation (Haller, 2002). Performance enhancing drugs are not only
dangerous and damaging; they are potentially deadly. Between 1985 and 1995, at least 121 US
athletes collapsed and died during or directly after a training session or game; most often because they
had hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or heart malformations (Maron, 1996). Most of the athletes that
have collapsed and died during or directly after training session or game tested positive for some type
of performance enhancing drug. From case reports, the incidence of life threatening effects appears to
be low, but serious adverse effects may be under recognized or under reported. Data from animal
studies seem to support this possibility. One study found that exposing male

Options For Implementing Intrusion Detection Systems Essay
Options for Implementing Intrusion Detection Systems Signature based IDS These IDS possess an
attacked description that can be matched to sensed attack manifestations. It catches the intrusions in
terms of the characteristics of known attacks or system vulnerabilities. This IDS analyzes information
it gathers and compares it to a database of known attacks, which are identified by their individual
signatures. The rules are pre defined. It is also known as misuse detection. The drawbacks of this IDS
is that they are unable to detect novel or unknown attacks, Suffer from false alarm and have to
programmed again for every new pattern to be detected. Anomaly based IDS This IDS models define
the baseline to describe normal state of network or host. Any activity outside baseline is considered to
be an attack i.e. it detects any action that significantly deviates from the normal behavior. The primary
strength is its ability to recognize novel attacks. The drawback is that it assumes that intrusions will be
accompanied by manifestations that are sufficiently unusual so as to permit detection. These generate
many false alarms as well and hence compromise the effectiveness of the IDS. Network based IDS
This IDS looks for attack signatures in network traffic via a promiscuous interface. It analyzes all
passing traffic. A filter is usually applied to determine which traffic will be discarded or passed on to
an attack recognition module. This helps to filter out known un malicious

What Is The Theme Of Contrapasso In Dante s Inferno
In Dante s Inferno, a permeating theme of the work is the idea of contrapasso. Contrapasso is only
mentioned once and late in the Inferno in Canto XXVIII of XXXIV by Bertran de Born: In me you
may observe fit punishment / Cosí s osserva in me lo contrapasso (XXVIII. 142). Although the literary
device of contrapasso is only mentioned once and late in the Inferno, the tool is used in every circle
and subdivision in hell. Contrapasso is seen in the punishments of the damned in a physical
manifestation, which represents an appropriate mode of retribution in terms of a kind of divine justice.
In Dante s Inferno, contrapasso, while it describes the physical agony of the damned as fit punishment
for their habitual sins, represents the damage ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dante does not compare the lustful to just any animal; Dante compares them to birds. Dante does this
by writing: As, in cold weather, the wings of starlings / bear them up in wide, dense flocks, / so does
that blast propel the wicked spirits (V. 40 42). The lustful are not only compared to starlings, but are
also compared to cranes: Just as cranes chant their mournful songs, / making a long line in the air, /
thus I saw approach, heaving plaintive sighs (V. 46 48). Comparing the wanton to birds does two
things to them. First, it makes the sinners less than human as the medieval point of view held that lust
is the property of beings less than human (Hollander, p. 103). Secondly, it makes the sinners less than
birds because birds are able to control where they fly, while the lustful are not. Dante explains a little
bit why the lecherous are punished the way they are. He states that he understood that to such torment
/ the carnal sinners are condemned, / they who make reason subject to desire (V. 37 39). Desire
governs the wantons reason instead of reason governing their desire. Since will instead of reason
governed the sinners choices in their lives, then in hell they are experiencing the physical
representation of the choices their souls made. The lustful are at the will of the wind, which blows
them anywhere without any direction. This parallels the choices they made in life as their wills guided
them without the direction of the intellect. The

Summary Of Juvenile Recidivism
Recommendation Overall, I would not recommend ART as an intervention tool to prevent future
recidivism of violent juvenile offenders, mostly due to ART not having a significant effect on violent
felony recidivism in the Washington study. ART shows promise on promoting prosocial behaviors that
significantly reduce overall juvenile recidivism; however, further research is needed. Currently,
Washington State is in a good place to recreate their 1999 2003 study because (1) the state has utilized
ART since 1999 and, at this point, all courts and ART trainers should be operating at a highly
competent level, (2) the state has shown a dedication to evidence based practices, and (3) the initial
study occurred nearly two decades ago and is in need of an update. However, an updated study would
require some updated methodology.
First, the state must conduct the study with a random assignment process consistent across all
participating courts instead of the pseudo random assignment previously ... Show more content on

Second, to better capture the long term effects of ART, WSIPP should track each participant s criminal
records annually throughout their lives and regularly update their study results because, previously,
WSIPP only checked recidivism up to 18 months after ART. Additionally, this more accurate
information on long term effects may better inform the cost benefit analysis. Third, further
investigation must examine why there was no significant reduction of violent felony recidivism. One
way that this information could come out is through the use of the community functioning follow up
in the New York implementation evaluation which tasked probation/parole officers with rating the
juveniles to gauge their community functioning within six different settings: Home and Family,

A framework of sustainable supply chain management: moving toward new theory
Craig R. Carter and Dale S. Rogers
University of Nevada, College of Business Administration, Reno, Nevada, USA
Abstract
Purpose The authors perform a large scale literature review and use conceptual theory building to
introduce the concept of sustainability to the field of supply chain management and demonstrate the
relationships among environmental, social, and economic performance within a supply chain
management context. Design/methodology/approach Conceptual theory building is used to develop a

Unfortunately, a review of the literature will show that the term sustainability has been inconsistently
defined and applied in the extant research. This lack of an explicit consideration of economic criteria
in current models and definitions of LSR and PSR, and the failure to consistently define sustainability
and to apply the concepts of sustainability to the field of supply chain management, lead to the
following research questions: RQ1. How can the term sustainability be defined and applied to supply
chain management? RQ2. Is there a relationship between the integration of the concepts of
sustainability and supply chain management, and long term economic success? More specifically, do
firms which engage in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) practices attain higher economic
performance than firms which concentrate solely on economic performance? The answers to these
research questions will help to clarify and begin to defuse the debate surrounding the relationship
between environmental and social performance on one hand, and economic performance on the other.
As noted by Hoffman and Bazerman (2005, p. 16):
The key to resolving this debate is the recognition that (social and environmental) behaviors are

Symptoms And Treatment Of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases
In the current world population there is a large increase in people diagnosed with inflammatory bowel
diseases (IBDs), lactose intolerance and/or a combination of the two. Theories suggest that the delayed

intolerance but only as a byproduct of the IBD. This begs the question of if the prevalence of an IBD
predisposes that same person to lactose intolerance and if so, what are the drivers that allow this to

Those who are lactose intolerant also have diminishes levels of lactase, the small intestinal enzyme
responsible for the catalysis of lactose. Dietary supplementation of the lactase enzyme has, in some
cases, proven to rectify the symptoms of lactose intolerance.
During infancy the vast majority of humans have the ability to digest and catabolize lactose into
glucose and galactose via the lactase enzyme. This catabolic capability is vital for newborn mammals,
given that their primary source of nutrition comes from their mother s milk. During the weaning
period, when children cease to use milk as a primary source of nutrition, the production of the lactase
enzyme severely deteriorates and eventually leads to the inability to catabolize lactose. While this may
be the natural progression of the expression of the lactase enzyme, there remains a large,
predominantly western population that maintains a steady production of lactase, those individuals are
known as lactase persistent (Baumgart, et al.).
Lactase Persistence Causes: Lactase persistence has been strongly suggested to be a function of
genetic causes and its inheritance occurs in an autosomal recessive manner. Individuals that exhibit the
highest lactase activity are genotypically homozygous recessive for lactase persistence; where as
individuals who show lower lactase activities are heterozygous or homozygous

Tulane College Application Essay
I am interested in attending Tulane University because of its academic and social opportunities as well
as its location. Tulane has strong history, theatre, and dance departments. It is important to me that I
go to a university where I can receive the best possible education in the areas that interest me. I am
also interested in Tulane because it is a school where it is very easy to double major and minor. I have
a lot of interests, and I think college is the time for me to explore them. The admissions counselor I
spoke with told me that 70% of Tulane students have a minor, 33% have a double major, and some
students even have a triple major. I think this also shows that Tulane is the type of school that attracts
ambitious students with a variety of interests. Additionally, I like that the core curriculum at Tulane
allows students to investigate different areas of interests and to possibly find a new direction for
themselves. The admissions counselor I spoke to also discussed that around 1/3 of Tulane students
study abroad. This appeals to me because I would like to be able to go study theatre in Europe.

The Characteristics Of A Serial Killer And The Zodiac Killer
In this paper, I will describe who the Zodiac Killer was, but also how a serial killer is different from a
normal homicide suspect. In addition, I will explain if the Zodiac Killer had specific criteria when he
selected his victims and whether a forensic psychologist or criminal profiler provided input in this
case. Finally, I will express my thoughts on why the Zodiac Killer was never captured and what else,
if anything could have been done to help find the infamous Zodiac Killer.
In order to explain how a serial killer is different than a normal homicide is to first understand how a
serial killer operates. On December 20, 1968, in the sleepy town of Benecia, California the murders of
a teenage couple were discovered in an area called lover s lane off Lake Herman Road. The victims,
Betty Lou Jensen and David Faraday, were shot while parked in their car around 11:10pm.
Investigators collected shell casings and other evidence from the scene, but after several months they
still did not have any witnesses or suspects. Then on July 4, 1969, a second young couple were
attacked by a gunman while in their car parked at Blue Rock Springs Park in Vallejo; about 10 miles
northwest of the Benecia murders. The female victim Darlene Ferrin died from her wounds, but
Michael Mageau who was shot in the leg, neck and jaw survived and was able to tell the police what
had occurred, along with a brief description of the gunman. Later, the gunman phoned the Vallejo

Victor Frankenstein Lightning Analysis
Lightning is a brief flash of electricity with many consequences. Lightning can be scarring,
illuminating, and destructive. It is something to be feared and respected. In the novel Frankenstein,
Mary Shelley utilizes the motif of lightning to represent the disastrous life Victor Frankenstein to
shows how wrong choices can destroy lives. Victor Frankenstein led a difficult life struck by
tragedies. Many catastrophes were marked by the appearance of lightning or the indication of
lightning and electricity. The first appearance of this motif came very early in the novel, It was not
splintered by the shock, but entirely reduced to thin ribbons of wood (Shelley 22). In the second
chapter, Victor reveals that when he was 15, he discovered a tree that had been absolutely decimated.
The tree was not destroyed by lightning in the stereotypical, jagged V shape way; instead, it was
completely torn apart and shredded. The first lightning strike in the novel was one of great power and
strength if it completely destroyed such an old and large oak tree. The first lightning strike was
primarily intended as an element of foreshadowing. As one of the first intricate details related by
Victor Frankenstein, it served the purpose of setting up the rest of the story. In a literal sense, the
lightning served the function of taking away the life of a tree. It was a brief destructive force that
carried a large consequence. Similary, Victor made a brief choice that led to much destruction.

Agnolo Bronzino Research Paper
The Mannerist artistic style of Agnolo Bronzino during the late Renaissance paved the way for later
Baroque artwork in various ways. The Renaissance was a time of societal, scientific, and artistic
advancement throughout all of Europe. The concepts of humanism and realism emerged from this
historical period. A great portion of art created during this era was religious, reflecting the idea that
humanity was divine. Discoveries during this period also set the fundamentals for modern day science
and technology. Advances in the early, high, and late Renaissance impacted the culture and the history

Throughout the Renaissance, religion played a significant role in the culture and society of European
civilization. Throughout the sixteenth century, the Christian church experienced turmoil as a religious
branch known as Protestantism separated from Catholicism. The movement, called the Reformation,
sparked great interest in religious artwork throughout Europe. Agnolo Bronzino achieved great
recognition in his day for his religious frescoes at the Chapel of Eleanora di Toledo in the Palazzo
Vecchio in Florence, in addition to his allegorical masterpieces and portraits. The frescoes, completed
between the years 1539 and 1565, had been painted on the vast walls and ceiling of the chapel.
Several of these masterpieces include depictions of significant saints including St. Michael the
Archangel, St. John the Evangelist, St. Francis, and St. Jerome the Penitent. Also painted inside the
Chapel are several allegories of the cardinal virtues (justice, prudence, temperance, and fortitude), and
the frescoes depict the Annunciation and the Deposition , which is a concentration of all of the ideas
with which Bronzino experimented in the wall and ceiling frescoes of the Chapel (McCorquodale, 72).

Dostoevsky’s Notes from Undergound
Dostoevsky s Notes from Undergound Reactions to an Overdeterministic Existence
Some of the works cited are missing
Dostoevsky presents his Notes from Undergound as the fragmented ramblings of an unnamed narrator.
On the surface, the character s narration appears disjointed and reaches no conclusive end ing until the
author intercedes to end the book. However, a close examination of the underground man s language
reveals a progression in his collected ravings. After expressing dissatisfaction with the notion of
determinism, the underground man perceives the irony of his ultra deterministic reality. Through his
narrative, the underground man discovers the truth about his predestined, fictional existence.

The underground man s rebellion against determinism and its consequences has become one of the
most famous moments in modern thought, and with good reason (196). Morson observes that,
although the underground man denounces a deterministic world, he still believes that he lives in one.
The underground man s resentment of determinism produces irony in that the underground man s true
existence as a fictional character epitomizes determinism, as
Morson contends. Morson articulates the irony, stating:
Here Dostoevsky makes shrewd use of metaliterary devices. For all of his struggles to be free, the
underground man is doubly determined, not only from within the narrative world but also from
without; not only by the iron logic of spite governing his actions but also by the fact that he is the
creation of someone who has plotted all his actions in advance. His world is not just deterministic but
overdeterministic. What Dostoevsky has done here is to make the very fact that the story is a story,
that it has a structure and has already been written, a sign of failed choice and futile self assertion
(199).
The underground man struggles against the idea that his actions have been pre determined, yet the
reader knows that the outcome has already been decided and already exists as words in coming
chapters. The character makes no conscious choice in his existence because the author controls his
thoughts and actions. Morson uses a story that

The Mafia And The Mafia
original name in Italy.Mafia originated in Sicily today in Italy and Corsica in France, and refers to the
criminal organization of a local secret association.
Today, these criminal organizations are not only active in Italy. For more than 100 years (mainly in the
early 20th century), they have spread all over the world, especially on the east coast of the United
States, with the migration of Italians. Their forces in the United States rose during the Great
Depression and reached their height by the mid 20th century until a series of FBI investigations broke
down in the 1970s and 1980s. Their actions include assassinations, illegal trade and obstruction of
justice. Although their power is far behind, they still affect the trend culture of the United States.
Many movies, TV shows and even advertisements are related to their image or life.
Today, the term mafia refers not only to these Italian offenders. Affected by the organization, similar
groups of mafias, such as the Russian mafia, have emerged in other parts of the world. Sometimes

city s establishment dates back over 600 years ago. From the depths of its physical and cultural

defining and understanding the cities of today. The manners in which the city s infrastructures and

established, the Fortress Wall of Seoul was constructed, which was a circular wall made from various
stones, sticks and other materials that enclosed the capital. The wall was assembled not only to define
the boundaries of the new land, but also for security and operational purposes (UNESCO). The
purpose of the gate was also a way for the dynasty to signify and set itself apart as a separate entity

The English Bildungsroman Essay
The English Bildungsroman
The novel has a strong tradition in English literature. In Great Britain, it can trace its roots back to
Daniel Defoe s Robinson Crusoe in 1719 (Kroll 23). Since then, the British novel has grown in
popularity. It was especially popular in Victorian England. The type of novel that was particularly
popular in Victorian England was the novel of youth. Many authors of the time were producing works
focused on the journey from childhood to adulthood: Charlotte Bronte wrote Jane Eyre, George Eliot
wrote The Mill on the Floss, and Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield and Great Expectations.
All of these novels trace the growth of a child. In this respect, some of the most popular novels of the

Similarly, the Bildungsroman is characterized by the growth, education, and development of a
character both in the world and ultimately within himself.
The Bildungsroman is subcategorized into very specific types of the genre, most often found in
German literature. There is the Entwicklungsroman, which can be defined as a chronicle of a young
man s general growth rather than his specific quest for self culture (Buckley 13). In other words, a
story recounting a man s life rather than focusing on the inner changes that contribute to his maturity.
Another form within German literature is the Erziehungsroman; this form is primarily concerned with
the protagonist s actual educational process (Buckley 13). Again, the concern is not the overall
development of the main character, but a specific aspect of that character s life. Finally, there is the
Kunstlerroman. The root Kunstler translates as artist in English. Therefore, this is the development of
the artist from childhood until his artistic maturity, focusing on the man as artist rather than the man in
general. Dickens David Copperfield and James Joyce s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man are
both examples of English Kunstlerroman, as the protagonists of both books are writers (Buckley 13).
These categories, while strict within German literature, are more free within English literature. For the
most part, it is (within English literature) a

A Brief Note On The Largest Open Mall Center
Our town, like most, has one, two, or more large enclosed shopping malls, plus several strip centers.

Here you can find everything, clothing, household items, food, auto parts, sports and hardware. Unlike
the enclosed malls this shopping center has the largest number national chain restaurants in town,
along with a cafeteria, donut shop, and several locally owned eateries. There is in one art gallery that

Illegal Immigration And The United States

Introduction to American Government and Politics

Illegal Immigrants Coming to the United States
Illegal immigration and border patrol are becoming two of America s top problems. The border
separates Mexico from the United States, in particular Arizona and Texas. The fence is becoming a
bigger issue for illegal immigrants to cross which, in turn, is making it an issue for border security.
Different comparisons between Arizona and Texas and their state laws on illegal immigration will be
made, the federal government s policies on illegal immigration, and President Barack Obama views
illegal immigration are all important issues for this topic. As illegal immigration continues to increase
it is not going to end anytime soon.
Demographics are prominent in illegal immigration because it shows where people come from. As of
2014, the United States has approximately 11 million illegal immigrants of all nationalities. According
to the Department of Homeland Security, many of the unauthorized immigrants are born in North
America which includes Mexico and Central America. Approximately 1.3 million are from Asia,
800,000 from South America, 300,000 from Europe, and 200,000 from other parts of the world.

Structural Protein
Functions of Proteins in Living Organisms
Proteins are an essential part of a healthy diet in the human body which help to stimulate growth and
maintenance. They are made up of amino acids, which the body uses to make new protein for a huge
variety of functions. Proteins work as a power source which is said to be the bodies tissue building
blocks. Protein is needed to form blood cells. Protein assists in shaping the hair, nails and muscles
which are the structural features of the body.

Collagen is a fibrous structural protein which is made up of three polypeptide chains surrounding each

One of this filament is called myosin. Myosin exists as a filament inside of the eukaryotic cells which
are a motor molecule responsible for a number of interactions, such as contractions muscles and
movement. The head and the tail domain are mostly composed of myosin molecules and converts ATP
(adenosine triphosphate), a molecule that cells use in order to work and live, into mechanical energy
(energy of work). This will then create force and movement. The filamentous actin is bound by the
head domain and uses ATP hydrolysis to walk along the filament and to create force and towards the
end. The tail domain generally mediates interaction with other myosin subunits and/or cargo
molecules. This will result in an expansion and contraction movement. It works closely with a
globular protein called actin that polymerises to create actin

Artemis: Goddess of Light and Protector of the Vulnerable
Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, the wilderness, female fertility, and the moon.

daughter of Zeus, the ruler of all the Greek Gods, and Leto a Titaness. Zeus was involved in an affair
with Leto and secretly impregnated her. Leto was forced to give birth to the babies while being chased
around by a python sent by Zeus wife Hera. Fortunately for Leto her first child Artemis was born
without any pain but unfortunately for her she had twins so her labor continued. As weak as baby

Artemis only ever had her one love affair. It was with a mortal Orion. Artemis was very fond of him
and was with him a lot. Apollo became very jealous of him and upset that his sister s attention and
time had been taken away from him. So when Orion went swimming far out in the ocean, Apollo
knowing Artemis couldn t resist a challenge to be the best made a bet with Artemis that she couldn t
hit the floating object way out on the horizon. Artemis being full of pride, gladly accepted the bet. Not
knowing what the floating object really was she quickly and proudly drew her bow and she shot and
killed the floating object on the horizon

Religion Has Played An Important Role In The History Of
Religion has played an important role in the history of the United States and in creating the colonies of
the New World in many ways. Religion was definitely one of the major reasons for the establishment
of the colonies. The early colonists wanted the freedom to worship God as they seen as proper, and
they were promised this freedom of worship. Most of these colonies were deeply rooted in their
religious beliefs. Religion strongly influenced the social and political life of the colonial times in the
New World. Generally, in the colonies, the church was normally a large building in the center of a
town, and was used not only for a place of worship, but it was also used for town meetings and
community gatherings. Many times a church ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Quakers and Puritans moved from their homes in Europe and England as a result of religious
unfairness. They sought to reform the Anglican religious practice, which was to purify the church and
later became known as the Puritans (Wood). They demanded for the elimination of all Roman Catholic
rituals and wanted to simplify religion to its basics (Shi, 42). The Puritans landed in American where
new colonies were created. The Puritans did not accept those that believed differently than they did.
They were forced to leave England because of their refusal to worship in Anglican churches. The
Puritans denied citizenship to the Quakers and others who believed in a different form of worship. The
Quakers had also refused to support the Church of England and were led by William Penn. The
Quakers stamped their values on the government of Pennsylvania. Other Puritans that were not as
radical in their religious views later established settlements along the Massachusetts Bay (Wood).
The Pilgrims main reason in coming to America was that they were searching for the freedom to
worship. The Pilgrims, defined as a person who journeys to a place for religious reasons, were also
known as Separatists and were the first permanent English settlement in New England. The Separatists
were with the Pilgrims who journeyed across the Atlantic and settled the first permanent English
settlement, Plymouth Colony in New England. The

Essay On Being A Non-Dependent Citizen
Throughout 2011 toward the end of 2015, my parents received several phone calls every other week
from the Thai agencies asking for the money. When I asked P Ooh and P Visa about the calls to my
parents, they would say that it was just a regular routine check up on my wellbeing. I felt it was very
strange because I always called them to inform my study and situation. Still, I believed that they truly
cared for my parents and me. After being treated like a criminal, I decided to look into becoming a non
visa dependent citizen so to save my family Dr. Jesse and my parents. After paying so many months
and so much money, the request still kept increasing higher and more. I decided to ask P Visa about

They replied the only choice for me would be paying the country in full and they would consider
providing the no objection letter. I was so heartbreaking to hear that because I was so loyal to my
country in every way I could. I obeyed and followed through every single request the country and the
Thai agencies had asked me to do. When they told me that I should start paying off some of the money
toward the total amount so that Dr. Jesse my family, and my parents didn t have to carry the burden
and I could receive the letter of no objection. I followed through their suggestion right away. When
my life s events changed, I informed them frankly and always went through the great length to deal
with everything peacefully. When they suggested me to pay, I followed them right away. When their
monetary demands increased, I asked them to understand my situation. Though being a doctoral
student only got paid just enough to live off while I was willing to pay them even when they requested
for more money. My husband Dr. Jesse immediately told me then to start keeping track of everything
and kept all the records. When they started calling my parents every other week about the money and
threatened their safety challenged by not paying money as request, everyone was in fear. Dr. Jesse had
helped me deal with monetary requests from my country. He worked extra hours to produce

  • 2. Suspense And Forshadowing In The Landlady By Roald Dahl Oh, I am, my dear, I am, of course I am. But the trouble is I m inclined to be just a teeny weeny bit choosy and particular if you know what I mean. (pg 174, Dahl). The Landlady by Roald Dahl creates suspense and foreboding with Billy Weaver, a seventeen year old businessman, looking for a place to stay when he comes to Bath, England around nine o clock in the evening. On Billy s way to the Bell and Dragon, a pub, he spots a illecebrous Bed and Breakfast which his eyes get transfixed by. He enters the strange house to be greeted by a dotty debilitated lady. Roald Donald creates suspense and foreboding with divine imagery and inconspicuous foreshadowing. But the air was deadly cold and the air was like a flat blade of ice on his cheeks. (pg 171, Dahl). Firstly, we have the use of deadly cold, which is imagery. It s a peculiar use of words, using deadly. Why is it deadly? It creates an eerie tone and mood to the story. When you first read you glance over it, but subsequently you realize the imagery was foreshadowing and creating a foreboding feeling. Secondly, the mention of flat blade is another abnormal choice of words. Blade? Why blade? Blade, of course, because she uses a blade to stuff creatures, and more importantly people. Although we only detect this later, this foreshadowing creates a sense of foreboding, whether you notice it or not, because your subconscious realizes the idiosyncratic word choice. Thirdly, they say flat ice blade against his cheeks. It s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hatred Hell into Lovely Heaven Essay Starts from Why do they hate me? , and then grows into Why can t they give me another chance? and ends up with I will take revenge! that is how humans hatred toward other person caused him/her to do evils. When humans start to think about taking revenge, they will think of the worst thing they can do to those who they want to take revenge to, and there is a possibility that they want to kill them too. Imagine how if everyone in this world has that kind of feeling, the world will be in chaos. Of course no one wants to have a chaotic world to live in, so how can we make a peaceful world? As social beings, humans hearts, minds and attitudes are affected by how other people feel and act toward them. Humans tend to do and feel the same ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The other effect is when someone is loved she/he will feel happy, and the happiness makes humans healthy (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 17:22). The most important effect is that love can change other people into better people that can lead into a better world. All of you should know that love s enemy is hatred. When love gives so many benefits, hatred gives bad results. One of the different results is love makes peace while hatred can cause a war. All people should know the fact that hating other people is bad, but why many people still hate each other? To love others is not a piece of cake, before humans can love others they need to love themselves, and before they can love themselves rightly they should love God (Matthew 22:37 39). Therefore, the key of loving others is by loving God wholly. In the novel Les Miserables, Jean Valjean who loves Cossette and Javert who hates Jean Valjean give a good example to explain about the different result between love and hate. Jean Valjean got happiness from loving Cossette (Hugo, page 332), while Javert could not feel peace and ended up committing suicide (Hugo, page 284). Jean Valjean used to be a man who was filled with hatred, so he kept stealing and did bad things. But after he was changed by love he tried as good as he can to help people around him and he also quoted ... Love each other dearly always. • 4. Innovative Approaches Of Resistance And The Reorganization... Through innovative approaches of resistance and the reorganization of the anti apartheid movement and the African National Congress, Nelson Mandela helped bring an end to apartheid, an oppressive form of government that promoted systematic segregation and institutionalized racism in South Africa. The Afrikaans word apartheid means separateness, and during the period of the apartheid, people were classified and separated into different racial groups where the civil and human rights of non whites were curtailed (Clark and Worger xxi). Although apartheid started in 1948, the roots of inequality were presented years before as a result of Dutch and British control. Both countries colonized South Africa in order to control South Africa s lucrative and, generally, untapped mining industry. South African workers, including the skilled and unskilled, were forsaken to work menial jobs and receive low wages (34). The Rise Of Anti Semitism With the rise of anti Semitism and the pogroms targeting European Jews in the late 1800s, there were many Jewish theorists and practitioners arose to find the ultimate solution for the Jewish question . In addition, the derived tension between the personal life of a Jew and the public life amongst secular society was the main challenge facing European Jewry. As a result of the long term process through which Jews attempted to resolve the tension between their personal and public lives in a secular society wrought with anti Semitism, the Zionist Movement emerged on the world scene lead by many intellectual and respected key figures. Among them, Theodore Herzl and Ahad Ha Am were the two most prominent Zionist leaders. They both shared the same idea of nationalism where it was time for all European Jews to unite and be recognized as a nation. Although having a sense of national consciousness to unite the displaced Jews, their visions were completely opposite. The Zionist Idea, a text by Arthur Hertzberg, described their different visions in term of mass evacuation, statehood, religion, and culture. Both Herzl and Ha Am agreed on one thing, it was time for the European Jews unite against the European oppressors. As Herzl writes: A more serious objection would be that I am giving aid and comfort to the anti Semites when I say we are a people one people. After the acquisition by American Express in 1984 the company went through tremendous growth for three consecutive years in terms of revenue (average 30%), financial plan fees (174%) and its sales force (annual rate11%). The company was facing new challenges as to how to maintain this 30 percent growth rate in the market place where the competition was increasing day by day. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To achieve the target of 30% growth in revenues one of the options with Saunders is to expand his Sales force. This expansion plan might be curbed internally as it goes against the other key objective of reducing cost. Saunders would have to put across this expansion as an investment and not a cost. He should also reiterate the fact that IDS competitors are doubling their sales force. Saunders would probably face a challenge to change the complex salary structure of the planners as well. It is critical that this complex structure be simplified and the remuneration benefits be clearly shown (to the sales force) if Saunders has to curb attrition (attrition rates being high the expected growth might not be possible). He might face a hurdle in this regard due to the fact that a complex system would have been put in place to handle all the paper work e.g. there are 150 different commission schedules but general repulsion to change in the workplace would be a hurdle. Here, Saunders could emphasize that keeping the sales force is all important especially since: Big players like Merrill Lynch have also started operating in the middle market and IDS has to consolidate its position there. This is possible only with a trained retainable work force. If IDS has to target the higher market of high net worth individuals where it has a smaller presence, then retaining trained personnel is all the more important The fact that this investment would help ... If you take predators out of an environment, the environment will be over run with other animals because the other animals population will not be controlled. Animals should live in the wild and not in captivity. Animals should live in the wild including endangered animals, instead of captivity. Some people believe animals should be taken care of in captivity because it is to dangerous for them in the wild. Animals do not truly belong in a cage. It is not fair for the animal to live in captivity because the animal would not be able to roam freely like it could if it lived in the wild. If an animal can not make it in the wild, it needs to either adapt to the wild or die which is a way of the population controlling itself. Animals are meant to live in the wild. Although the literary device of contrapasso is only mentioned once and late in the Inferno, the tool is used in every circle and subdivision in hell. Dante does not compare the lustful to just any animal; Dante compares them to birds. Dante does this by writing: As, in cold weather, the wings of starlings / bear them up in wide, dense flocks, / so does that blast propel the wicked spirits (V. 40 42). The lustful are not only compared to starlings, but are also compared to cranes: Just as cranes chant their mournful songs, / making a long line in the air, / thus I saw approach, heaving plaintive sighs (V. 46 48). Comparing the wanton to birds does two things to them. First, it makes the sinners less than human as the medieval point of view held that lust is the property of beings less than human (Hollander, p. 103). Secondly, it makes the sinners less than birds because birds are able to control where they fly, while the lustful are not. Dante explains a little bit why the lecherous are punished the way they are. He states that he understood that to such torment / the carnal sinners are condemned, / they who make reason subject to desire (V. 37 39). Desire governs the wantons reason instead of reason governing their desire. Since will instead of reason governed the sinners choices in their lives, then in hell they are experiencing the physical representation of the choices their souls made. The lustful are at the will of the wind, which blows them anywhere without any direction. This parallels the choices they made in life as their wills guided them without the direction of the intellect. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Those who are lactose intolerant also have diminishes levels of lactase, the small intestinal enzyme responsible for the catalysis of lactose. Dietary supplementation of the lactase enzyme has, in some cases, proven to rectify the symptoms of lactose intolerance. This catabolic capability is vital for newborn mammals, given that their primary source of nutrition comes from their mother s milk. During the weaning period, when children cease to use milk as a primary source of nutrition, the production of the lactase enzyme severely deteriorates and eventually leads to the inability to catabolize lactose. • 24. Victor Frankenstein Lightning Analysis Lightning is a brief flash of electricity with many consequences. Lightning can be scarring, illuminating, and destructive. It is something to be feared and respected. In the novel Frankenstein, Mary Shelley utilizes the motif of lightning to represent the disastrous life Victor Frankenstein to shows how wrong choices can destroy lives. Victor Frankenstein led a difficult life struck by tragedies. Many catastrophes were marked by the appearance of lightning or the indication of lightning and electricity. The first appearance of this motif came very early in the novel, It was not splintered by the shock, but entirely reduced to thin ribbons of wood (Shelley 22). In the second chapter, Victor reveals that when he was 15, he discovered a tree that had been absolutely decimated. The tree was not destroyed by lightning in the stereotypical, jagged V shape way; instead, it was completely torn apart and shredded. The first lightning strike in the novel was one of great power and strength if it completely destroyed such an old and large oak tree. The first lightning strike was primarily intended as an element of foreshadowing. As one of the first intricate details related by Victor Frankenstein, it served the purpose of setting up the rest of the story. In a literal sense, the lightning served the function of taking away the life of a tree. It was a brief destructive force that carried a large consequence. Similary, Victor made a brief choice that led to much destruction. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Agnolo Bronzino achieved great recognition in his day for his religious frescoes at the Chapel of Eleanora di Toledo in the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, in addition to his allegorical masterpieces and portraits. The frescoes, completed between the years 1539 and 1565, had been painted on the vast walls and ceiling of the chapel. The underground man s rebellion against determinism and its consequences has become one of the most famous moments in modern thought, and with good reason (196). Morson observes that, although the underground man denounces a deterministic world, he still believes that he lives in one. The underground man s resentment of determinism produces irony in that the underground man s true existence as a fictional character epitomizes determinism, as Morson contends. Morson articulates the irony, stating: Here Dostoevsky makes shrewd use of metaliterary devices. For all of his struggles to be free, the underground man is doubly determined, not only from within the narrative world but also from without; not only by the iron logic of spite governing his actions but also by the fact that he is the creation of someone who has plotted all his actions in advance. His world is not just deterministic but overdeterministic. What Dostoevsky has done here is to make the very fact that the story is a story, that it has a structure and has already been written, a sign of failed choice and futile self assertion (199). The underground man struggles against the idea that his actions have been pre determined, yet the reader knows that the outcome has already been decided and already exists as words in coming chapters. The Bildungsroman is subcategorized into very specific types of the genre, most often found in German literature. There is the Entwicklungsroman, which can be defined as a chronicle of a young man s general growth rather than his specific quest for self culture (Buckley 13). In other words, a story recounting a man s life rather than focusing on the inner changes that contribute to his maturity. Another form within German literature is the Erziehungsroman; this form is primarily concerned with the protagonist s actual educational process (Buckley 13). Again, the concern is not the overall development of the main character, but a specific aspect of that character s life. Finally, there is the Kunstlerroman. The root Kunstler translates as artist in English. Therefore, this is the development of the artist from childhood until his artistic maturity, focusing on the man as artist rather than the man in general. Dickens David Copperfield and James Joyce s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man are both examples of English Kunstlerroman, as the protagonists of both books are writers (Buckley 13).
