3. INTRODUCTION:
 An oil spills is the release of a liquid petroleum
hydrocarbon into the environment, especially marine
areas, due to human activity, and is a form of
pollution.
 Oil spills may be due to releases of crude oil from
tankers, offshore platforms, drilling rigs & wells,
etc.
 Heavier fuels used by large ships such as bunker
fuel, or the spill of any oily refuse or waste oil.

4. EFFECTS OF OIL SPILLS ON PLANET
EARTH:
THE EFFECT OF OIL ON WILD LIFE:
 Poisoning of wild life higher up the flood chain if they eat
large amounts of other organisms that have taken oil into
their tissues.
 Damage to the airways & lungs of marine mammals and
turtles, congestion , emphysema and even death by breathing
in droplets of oil, oil fumes or gases.
 Marine mammals lose body weight when they cannot feed
due to contamination of their environment by oil.
 Damage to the insides of animals and birds bodies, for
example by causing ulcers or bleeding in their stomachs if
they ingest the by accident.

5. EFFECTS ON HUMAN LIFE:
 The main oil spill effects on human include a variety of
possible health effects, economic impart, as well as
recreational and aesthetic.
 The variety of health effects (from minor illness to
serious condition possibly including cancers.
 Disturbance of traffic (e.g., marine traffic)-affecting
import-export activities.

6. CLEAN-UP PROCEDURE FOR OIL
SPILLS:
Using oil booms :-
• Oil booms are a very popular
method of controlling oil
spills.
• There are various kinds of oil
booms that have been
designed for various areas
where the oil spillage might
occur , leading to a quite
through oil spill cleanup.

7.  Using sorbent :-
• Sorbents means sponges that
are placed on the surface of the
spillage affected area.
• These sorbents suck and absorb
the oil from the surface of the
water leading to an spill
cleanup.
 Burning In-situ :-
• In simple terms , this means
burning of the oil on the site
where the spillage has occurred.
• The burning has to be done
quite promptly before the oil
spill can spread to a larger area.

8. Skimimng :-
• As the name suggest, skimming
involves the removal of the oil
spillage with the help of tools
and equipment’s from the
surface of water.
• This because the density of oil
will tends to lighter than the
density of water.
Using hot water and huge
force:-
 In these method , huge force of
the hot water is used to push the
oil spilt back into the water.
 Then with the help of skimming
tools & equipments , the oil spill
clean-up takes place.
