Oil spillage and gas flaring by the oil industry has devastated the Niger Delta for more than half a century. Oil pollution causes both immediate damage and long-term harm to fish, agricultural lands and the health of the living environment.
The petroleum industry in Nigeria is the largest industry and mean generator of Gross Domestic product (GDP) in the West African Nation. Inspite of the huge financial investment made by the Nigerian government in the oil and gas industry of the economy, it has not resulted in significant benefits for most Nigerians.

Pipeline Vandalisation and Its Implications on Oil Host Communities of the Ni...paperpublications3
Abstract: Vandalisation of oil pipelines with its resultant effects of oil spillage, and fire explosion appears to have led to death toll. This has become a nightmare to the Nigerian government on how the menace could be curbed. This prompted the study on pipeline vandalisation and its implications on oil host communities of the Niger Delta between 2003 and 2015. Specifically, the study determined the effect of incidences of oil pipeline vandalisation and fire explosion on death tolls in the oil host communities. The theoretical thrust of the paper was the “frustration-aggression theory (FAT)” of John Dollard. Pre-formulated tables which are contemporary from oil producing and oil regulatory firms as well as other institutions in the oil industry in the Niger Delta were obtained and systematically analyzed. The study adopted 'ex-post facto' research design because of its analytical anchor on already documented events. Regression and correlation were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that the incidences of oil pipeline vandalisation and fire explosion insignificantly contributed to death tolls in the oil host communities of Niger Delta.

Reasserting the Relevance of the Geology Profession Under the Duterte Adminis...Fernando Penarroyo
A few months into his presidency, Rodrigo Roa Duterte has already created an impact in the resources industry. The mining industry experienced the biggest clampdown under the present administration when the Department of Environment and Natural Resources undertook a massive audit of the operations of mining companies resulting in numerous suspensions. The industry was not helped either by lower demand for bulk commodities combined with a bleak global outlook for production resulting in a fall in mineral prices. On the other hand, global energy investments in 2015 were also down due to a sharp fall in upstream oil and gas capital spending. Geopolitical realignment in the South China Sea has also disrupted petroleum exploration in the country despite the Philippines obtaining a favourable ruling from the Permanent Court of Arbitration. On the policy front, the Duterte administration through its ten-point socio-economic agenda seeks to expedite permitting approvals, which hopefully can ease the bottlenecks in the highly regulated resources industry. Amidst the decline in investment activity in the mining and energy industries, the labour market for the geology profession and other resources-based geoscientists is subdued. However, the profession will continue to remain relevant in the fields of environmental planning, hydrogeology, pollution control, geohazard, civil engineering and construction, and waste management while the resources industry continues to weather the storm.

Dig It! Rare Earth and Uranium Mining Potential in the StatesALEC
Rare earth and uranium are crucial to modern life in the United States. Rare earths are necessary for a wide array of everyday products from iPhones to advanced medical support to defense equipment, and to our digital society. Uranium fuels 20 percent of our electricity. Fortunately, the United States has the capacity to expand domestic production of both rare earths and uranium, which could reinvigorate our economy, add jobs, and increase revenues to suffering state budgets.
The Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force’s publication, titled Dig It! Rare Earth and Uranium Mining Potential in the States, details rare earth and uranium mining reserves and production, reviews permitting and regulatory hurdles, estimates the economic benefit of developing reserves, and highlights the safety and environmental track record of mining.

The Impact of Oil and Gas Development on the Landscape and Surface in Nigeria Sakibpedia
This writing will focus on the impact on the impact of oil and gas development on the landscape, surface water and groundwater of the Niger Delta – while also assessing the various means of remediation in use. Geologically, the Niger Delta petroleum systems consist of Lower Cretaceous , Upper Cretaceous–lower Paleocene and Tertiary. When Nigeria became an independent nation on 1 October 1960, Shell–BP began to relinquish its acreage and its exploration licenses were converted into prospecting licenses that allowed development and production. The Federal Government of Nigeria started its Department of Petroleum Resources Inspectorate in 1970 and Nigeria joined the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in 1971. – and in order to take control of the country’s petroleum industry, Nigeria nationalized BP’s holding completely in 1979, and Shell–BP became Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria. Oil spillages routinely occur in the Niger Delta. The official figures of SPDC show that between 1976 and 2001, 6,187 incidents in which 3 million barrels were spilled. The Niger Delta Environmental Survey An impact assessment of the 1983 Oshika oil spill. Spills of crude oil in Niger Delta farmlands have been reported since 1971. In general, toxicity depends on nature and type of crude oil , level of oil contamination, type of environment and degree of selective of individual organisms. Controlled burning effectively reduce the amount of oil in water, if done properly but it must be done in low wind and can cause air pollution. A principal target for emissions reduction is flaring and venting which causes most of the air pollution. Saltwater tanks can be often susceptible to lightning strikes due to build up in static electricity, with the spilled oil spreading to surrounding lands, waterways. This requires a secondary containment of the tanks that makes it easier to clean up the inevitable spill. In cases of expected major storms or flooding events, crude oil can be removed from tank batteries while refilling the tanks with saltwater to prevent them tipping over during the flooding event.
Evaluation of the impact of oil spillage on izombe community and their produc...eSAT Journals
Abstract This project reviewed the environmental impact study of oil spillage, using the case study of Izombe in Imo State, Nigeria. It critically analysed the effects of oil spillage on marine life, land, ecological effect, and the effect on human health. It further treated the socio-economics of the people and appraised sustainable environment and development which only can be achieve through environmental impact assessment (EIA). The research also involved the use of primary and secondary sources of data collection for methodology. Questionnaires were developed, administered and observations recorded. We found out that oil spillage occurred up to two (2) times yearly at Izombe, thereby reducing the likelihood of any productivity improvement. It was traced mainly due to sabotage of oil installation. We found out that 56.4% of oil spillage was due to sabotage. We recommended increased efforts by the stakeholders in the management of the oil installations. Keywords: Evaluation, Oil spillage, Productivity, Izombe.
Review of Climate Change and Its effect on Nigeria EcosystemAI Publications
This paper examines the issue of climate change and its impact on the environment. The effects of man's activities as well as those of natural phenomena on global warming, climate change and the environment are presented and discussed. The options that are available as response to global warming: mitigation, adaptation and possible human suffering as consequences of what cannot be avoided by mitigation and adaptation are presented. An overview of the Nigerian environment, preparedness for the impact of global warming and related problems are also presented. The status of environmental data and the need for environmental baseline survey and the creation of a comprehensive database for the country driven by geographical information system are presented and discussed. The paper then underscores the need for governments at all levels to adequately fund geo information production and cultivate the culture of its usage for adequate and proactive response to global warming, sustainable environmental management and national development.

Oil Exploration and Exploitation: Uprising and Insurgence in the Niger Delta,...paperpublications3
Abstract: The conflict in the Niger Delta region is grounded in the deep historical struggles by the local people who have been subjected to several decades of perceived discrimination and marginalization in the distribution of powers and the benefits accrued from the oil in the region. This paper therefore examines the conflict in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria, which emanated as a result of right to a resource control. The study adopts the theory of frustration aggression and structural imperialism to address the impending and uprising problems in the region. The conflict in the region had been attributed to corrupt political elites that misused the resources and wealth that were meant for the growth and development of the region. The study concluded that the problems in the region could only be eradicated if the local people are given the right to self-determination and local autonomy, thereby fighting poverty and underdevelopment in the region.
Change in climate and consequent global warming are posing threats to food security in many developing nations including Nigeria because of the climate-dependent nature of agricultural systems and lack of coping capabilities. The spatiotemporal pattern of temperature and rainfall of Nigeria between 1901 and 2005 (105 years), using temperature and rainfall data to support the concept of regional climate change and its impact on Agriculture and food security was in-vestigated. Also assessed was the level of agriculture funding and output in Nigeria. Mean annual air temperature and rain-fall data between 1901- 2005 (105 years) were obtained from Food and Agricultural Organization publications, National Bureau of Statistics, Central Bank of Nigeria bulletin and National Meteorological Agency. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The results showed that within the period of 105 years, rainfall decreased by 81 mm with increasing temperature of 1.1℃. The unpredictability of rainfall and steadily increasing air temperature were observed from 1971-2005. The total federal budget between 2001 and 2005 averaged 824 billion Naira per year of which very small amount (14.7 billion (1.8%)) went to agricultural sector. The actual spending was 681 billion Naira per year with 11.4 bil-lion Naira for agriculture. Over 25 years, there were low and dramatic walloping of public spending in agriculture relative to large size and importance of agricultural sector in the economy. There is a continuous rise in output from 1987 to 2000 before it dropped in 2001. Land degradation, desert encroachment, drying up of surface waters, coastal inundations, and shift in cultivated crops over time affected the food security in Nigeria. The current available data showed that Nigeria, like most parts of the world is experiencing the basic features of climate change. Therefore, Nigerian government/ private sector partnership should encourage agricultural, industrial and domestic practices which will not contribute to the emission of greenhouse gasses.
Issues, Claims and the Challenges of Militancy Uprising on Security in Niger ...AJHSSR Journal
The continuedmilitancy activities in the oil-rich delta region is a future mirror of doomsday for
Nigeria‟s peaceful atmosphere, political and economic settings. There are identified issues from the region, the
claims by the governments of being rational and, the claims of neglect, deprivation and marginalisation by the
people from the region. Based on this diverse point of views, this study observedthe fundamental issues and the
various claims upon which are regarded as a position and basis for the faceoff. The study relied on the context
analysis of the secondary data such as newspapers report, government white papers, articles and journals etc.
The study found that, the continuous and frequency of militancy uprising and security challenges in the Niger
Delta region is asa result ofsome aggressive youths who still felt that, they were being deprived and neglected
despite several attempts made by the government to salvage the situation. The study outlined the approach
adopted in solving the problem so far and indeed observed that the situation remains precarious as a result of
political corruption. The study recommends the departure from thevarious amorphous programmesby the federal
governments which many of the politician from the region see as a means to enrich themselves and do goodonly
to their pockets rather than helping the Niger Delta region as a whole.
The Role of the Nigerian State in the Socio-Political Conflict in the Niger-D...inventionjournals
The Nigerian state has been affected by several conflicts socially and politically. The leadership have made promises which were not kept and they have not shown the political will to tackle the conflicts in the country. Hence, the Odua People Congress in the South West, the Boko Haram in the North East and the Niger Delta Militia in the South South of Nigeria respectively. This work focuses on the Niger Delta Conflict which has caused havoc in the country recently. The justification of this work is to attempt to look at the actions and inactions of the leadership of the country which have fueled these conflicts and proffer recommendations to remedy the situation. Expofacto theory was adopted to established the role of the Nigerian state in these conflicts using historical/descriptive and prescriptive approaches. The findings are that; government has not provided employment for the youths, has not clean the polluted environment, misappropriation of compensations, divide and rule policy, lack of consensus among the ruling class as regards the interest of the citizens. Recommendations: Deprivation in the region should be tackle, provide employment for youths, clean the polluted environment, discountenance force and use peaceful means to settle conflicts etc

The parousia expectation does it impact evangelizationIrfan iftekhar
What is the essence of the theology behind the return of Christ? If there is, to say, no delay in the expectation of Parousia, and Christ returns this day, then as true Christians we have to take it as our last and then evangelize, whosoever we can. But if it does not happens so. Should I baptize? As a faithful Christian we must believe at His coming. God never revealed when Christ would come, although He informed us all about his second coming but not the precise time of his coming. Evangelism is crucial for those who desire to hear it, second come discipleship. Preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is like fulfilling the great commission. The Disturbing Truth- Milk, Sugar and ChocolatesIrfan iftekhar
Most TV channels and media houses havetight deadlines and limited understanding which sometimes make it difficult to provide a thorough report. Hungry for the latest news, the media often report scientific findings prematurely, without benefit of careful interpretation, replication, and peer review. Usually, the reports present findings from a single, recently released study, making the news current and controversial. Consequently, the public receives diet and health news quickly, but not always in perspective. Reporters may twist in conclusive findings into "meaningful discoveries" because writing catchy headlines and sensational stories have become a norm today.
As a result, "surprising new findings" seem to contradict one another, and consumers feel frustrated and betrayed. Occasionally, the reports are downright false, but more often the apparent contradictions are simply the normal result of science at work. A single study contributes to the big picture, but when viewed alone, it can easily distort the image. To be meaningful, the conclusions of any study must be presented cautiously within the context of other research findings.

Niger delta environmental disaster
1. Niger Delta Environmental Disaster
Introduction
Oil spillage and gas flaring by the oil industry has devastated the Niger Delta for more than half
a century. Oil pollution causes both immediate damage and long-term harm to fish, agricultural
lands and the health of the living environment. The exploitation of oil and gas in the Niger Delta
of Nigeria resulted to impoverishment, conflict, human rights abuses and despair to the majority
of the people rather than development. The impact of the crises continuously affects oil and gas
operators leaving the area unsafe and endangers the lives of workers and assets. This study tends
to capture experiences from the events so as to prevent further deterioration of law, peace and
order in the region. To provide a long lasting solution to the deep-rooted crises, the present study
identified the root causes of the Niger Delta crisis, the trend of escalation, and the management
strategies that were engaged along with their impact and recommended appropriate management
approaches to prevent further deterioration of the situation and to restore peace in the areas.
Background
Oil exploitation in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria began in 1956 at a production level of 5,100
barrels per day (p/d) and was first exported to Europe. The production level increased to
20,000 barrels p/d before independence in 1960. In 1961, the production increased to 46,000
p/d leading to the construction of a trans Niger pipeline in 1965 and the exploitation of offshore
fields which increased the production to 275,000 p/d and to 420,000 before the commencement
of Nigerian civil war in 1967 which lasted until 1970 (Ojakora, 2011). The civil war time slightly
2. affected oil production which significantly increased to 2.06 million p/d in 1973. As of 1972, oil
constituted 83% of Nigerian exports and constituted 17% of government revenue in 1971, 71%
in 1973 and 86% in 1975. In the early 1990s, oil revenue accounted for more than 90% of
Nigeria foreign exchange receipts and constituted about 70% of the budgetary revenues and 25%
GDP (Edokpayi and Metaferia, 2005). The Niger Delta is a densely region often referred to as
“Oil River” and extends to about 26,000 Km2 in the southern part of the country with about
10,000 Km2 of wetlands in the rain forest of Nigeria (Uyigue and Agho, 2007). Nigeria is
one of the most populous countries in Africa and the most populous country in West Africa
(Ojakoratu, 2011; Uyigue and Igwe, I. 2009). Ojakorotu (2011) described the region as one of
the world’s richest mineral resources region with different species of plants and animals as well
as humans
Niger Delta and Environmental disaster
The impacts of the prolonged oil conflict that have suffered Niger Delta inhabitants for over
the past fifty years affected various businesses conducted by the multinational companies in the
region as the government policies and implementation measures were deficient in providing
adequate safety for workers (including expatriate) in the oil and gas industries. The lives of those
that were kidnapped are at risk. Children, the aged and the needy are plagued by the dire
consequences of this epidemic. The present study provided a clear description for a better
understanding of the experiences of the Niger Delta inhabitants, the causes and how the
crisis escalated and suggested appropriate management strategies to mitigate the adverse impacts
of future activities in the area. Those living in fear for years with their children, aged and
3. vulnerable family members and the people that have been kidnapped from their homes, schools,
churches, in traffic, at work place and other places will feel relief as peace, security and stability
is restored (Ogula and Woods, 2008). Beyond every reasonable doubt, the Niger Delta crisis that
has lasted for over five decades resulted from oil exploration activities that affected major means
of livelihood of the people such as farming, fishing, hunting, and trading as identified in 2008 by
Opukri and Ibaba (2008). The oil activities severely degraded the living environment through
consistent pollution by the MNCs’ oil spillage and construction of pipeline channels to supply oil
to other parts of the country. Continual gas flaring scared away game animals and limited
hunting, and the people find it difficult to meet their daily needs without sufficient farming,
fishing and hunting. The Niger Delta people can no longer meet their daily livelihood because of
the high cost of living, environmental pollution and lack of roads, potable water, housing,
electricity, education and health facilities, among other basic infrastructures.
Conclusion
The impeding dangers of unresolved conflict in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria can no longer
be undermined. The present study identified things that were not known earlier about the Niger
Delta crises, to improve knowledge and provide a clear understanding on the causes and
remediation of the deep-rooted and prolonged oil crises. The study reported the adverse impacts
of oil and gas activities on individuals, families, communities and the environment of the Niger
Delta. The study revealed the dangers with inappropriate decisions and actions of thegovernment
and the oil and gas industries to control the deteriorating impact of the Niger Delta crises on the
4. communities and the region at large. In order to change the adverse impacts of the crises to
individuals, families, communities, the environment, organizations, and the society, the present
study provided recommendations to guide the government, the oil and gas industries and the
Niger Delta communities in their relations and actions to protect lives and the living
environment. The approach provided has not been put to use elsewhere and provides sets of
compensation to all the affected source of livelihood of the indigenous people which was the
cause of the oil crisis.
