Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy...
Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy
As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new
technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society s push
for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has begun to
take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13 percent of U.S.
citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since then (Rinpche
60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and medication are evolving and
being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to try ... Show more content on

To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will
examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of
emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind.
In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we must
first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture bound and religious oriented to
be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider Buddhism as their
primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are psychologically based (Michalon
203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious leaders, agreed to this when he sad, It is
possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative techniques or mental training without being a
Buddhist (Gay 172). It is of no threat to the religion of any psychotherapy patient to be able to
understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her way of life. In order to progress to a happier
lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine other philosophies and how we may benefit
from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very philosophical approach to a happier and more
compassionate way of thinking.

San Joaquin River Valley
The San Joaquin River Valley Project represents a comprehensive long term effort to restore the flow
of the San Joaquin River. After reading the article, River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds by Bill
McEwen I chose and decided to use this article because it has plenty of reasonable facts. Bill McEwen
emerged as veteran journalist who has worked in various positions for the Bee since 1980. He grew up
in the community and knows how everything works. The article McEwen wrote operated and
published in the Fresno Bee in March 6, 2015 in a city surrounded by farms. Fresno offers big anti

The project has not yet fully achieve its goals, but it contains approved results for future
manufacturing. After the approval of the project they have prepared for it and since then they have had
a lot of successes. One of the successes appeared as the salmon experiment, 1,200 salmon got released
for the first time in the river and over 40% of these fish successfully migrated 150 miles downstream
of the river. The project will cost approximately 892 million dollars with an additional 188 million
dollars in levee improvements. The followers of this project believe that the money has continued well
spend but not necessarily true. The project continues in the process, but it has displayed working
characteristics for some of the salmon s migration to different parts of the river. The current drought
California suffers affected the project since it caused a delay. Farmers and near residents think the
project needs reevaluation to put priorities first. Since California expects El Nino projections appear to
affect the San Joaquin Project since we would get more water and easier to continue the project. After
reading multiple articles and gathering research my viewpoint of this plan does not change. I believe
California shouldn t waste the money they have to solve simple problems when they have bigger
problems to solve. Restoring the river affects

The Construction Of Smart Grid
Introduction:
Improve the efficiency of power supply have become crucial to satisfying the demands of people
increasing day by day in the life and the development of social production. The world has accelerated
the development of smart grid technology and effectively promote the smart power grid. The Smart
grid has become the new trend of the future power grid development [1]. The construction of smart
grid is based on economic development, to meet the needs of people, and it is the inevitable result of
advanced science and technology development to a certain degree. State Grid Corporation proposed to
speed up the construction of high voltage network power grid as the backbone network, with
informatization, automation, interactive of characteristics of the coordinated development of power at
all levels of the strong and smart grid, and strive to achieve the power grid from the traditional power
grid to a high effective, economical, clean and interaction of modern power grid upgrades and cross,
actively promoting clean energy development, focusing on from generation, transmission, substation,
power distribution, power, scheduling, communication information, seven aspects such as to study the
key technology of Intelligent power grid [3]. A Smart grid includes STG (Smart Transmission Grid)
and SDG (Smart Distribution Grid). A lot of literature introduced smart grid basic concepts and
techniques, but per the literature of SDG is relatively small. Smart Distribution Grid

Wilkie Collins The Moonstone
Throughout Wilkie Collins The Moonstone, the characters are presented with various religious beliefs.
Three prime examples are Gabriel Betteredge, Miss Clack and the unnamed Hindus. Each has their
own way of going about celebrating their religion, and through each character Collins reveals his
personal feelings about their religions and the way they go about being religious. The first narrator is
Gabriel Betteredge. Throughout the whole of his narrative, Betteredge does refer to God with a capital
G, enforcing his beliefs. In comparison to some other characters, however, Betteredge does not rely
wholly on the Bible for guidance. He instead relies on Robinson Crusoe for all his advice. In Chapter
XXI, however, he does admit to being an average good Christian, when you don t push my
Christianity too far (Collins 200). A search of the iBooks edition of The Moonstone reveals that in his
narrative alone, Betteredge refers to Robinson Crusoe a total of 25 times, and the Bible, in comparison
is mentioned once, and the Bible in question is not even in Gabriel s possession. These 25 mentions of
Robinson Crusoe do not include those in the narratives from the other chroniclers. Another point on
Betteredge s Crusoe addiction can be found in Ezra Jennings narrative when it is revealed that
Jennings has only read Betteredge s prized book once, as a child: Sir. He said gravely, there are great
allowances to be made for a man that has not read Robinson Crusoe since he was a

Types Of Investments And Bonds
Introduction
This paper will examine two basic types of investments; stock and bonds, from an investor s
perspective highlighting the advantages and disadvantages between common stock (equity) and
corporate bonds (debt).
Webster Dictionary defines investment as the outlay of money usually for income or profit usually in a
tangible asset such as property . With both stocks and bonds, the only thing tangible is a simple piece
of paper, a certificate. On the surface, these certificates may seem the same, however there is a very
important fundamental difference. Owning a stock certificate is evidence of being a shareholder;
hence money is exchanged for a portion of ownership in a company. A bond certificate, on the other
hand, represents a contract and evidence of giving a loan to a company. Stocks are considered equity
investments and bonds debt investments. This key difference brings its own set of pros and cons to
each of these types of investment and affects their level of risk and return.
The Advantages of Stocks
Corporations issue both stocks and bonds to raise capital to purchase land, equipment, building, or
even pay off debt. However, there are several advantages to investors to purchase a stock in a
corporation over bonds. First, when you purchase a share of stock you essentially become a part
owner in the company. With this ownership comes special privileges, such as the right to vote on who
sits on the board of directors and on matters that could

Nuclear War Research Paper
Instate violence has decreased in recent decades when it comes to nuclear war, but small arms war is
still wide spread. More wars have had the use of guns than the use of nuclear weapons. More people
have been killed in wars because of guns than because of nuclear weapons. However, more people can
be killed in an instant by nuclear weapons whereas when you use a gun, more people can be killed in a
span of a few months. It is also easier and cheaper to get a gun than it is to make and use a nuclear
weapon. Terrorists are scary with a gun or a box cutter, but imagining ISIS or Al Qaeda with a nuclear
weapon would cause the utmost terror across America.
Liberalists and their conflicts are driven by issues like scarcity and survivability. An example would
be Hugo Chavez s regime in Venezuela. They fight over access to resources or control of the
government. Realists believe that you cannot trust anyone in an anarchic society. Problems with
realistic theory lay on factors of offensive and defensive advantage and the ability to tell the difference
between those two. Some examples would be WWI and the use of the machine gun and how no one
would think that Canada and the United States ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wars are usually fought for getting resources or based on ideologies or religion. Democratic
institutions may sway public opinion, but this still may not result in future wars. Domestic order is in
opposition to international anarchy and highlights the challenges facing international institutions. We
need to identify different domestic interests that value the cost of war differently. The government
itself can be an actor that can have interests in threatening or starting a war. Democratic peace tries to
explain that having a democratic world will result in less war, but that is not true. Wars against
democracies can be predicted by chance. An example of this would be the American Civil War when
democracies fought one

The Voyage of Christopher Columbus
American History I 07/08/05 Christopher Columbus Voyage to North America Spanish exploration
first began with a series of revolutions. First, the Commercial Revolution generated economic
stability. Second, the Intellectual Revolution generated interest in the Earth s composition and the
pursuit of exploration. Europe then called for a political revolution to end the disorganized and
disorderly rule of its government. This revolution returned order and stability to the government and
renewed interest in exploration to search for national wealth. The last of these revolutions was the
religious revolution (note Columbus voyage occurred before this revolution). As more people broke
away from the national religion they searched for a place ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Afterwards, Columbus then went to Lisbon, Spain a year later where he would propose the voyage to
King Ferdinand of Aragon and Queen Isabella of Castile. When Columbus made a friend in Father
Perez, it was a turning point for him. He was able to gain support from converts who believed in his
cause. Ferdinand and Isabella were harder to convince, however. They found little interest in
Columbus curiosity as they were preoccupied with defending themselves against the Moors. Later in
1491, Columbus again appears before Ferdinand and Isabella who apparently liked and respected the
determined seaman (38) 1. Although they had admiration for Columbus, his plans for voyage were
again rejected, partially because of his request to titles and riches. It seems that Columbus gave but
scant and unsatisfactory information to the commission, probably through fear that his ideas might be
improperly made use of and he be robbed of the glory and advantages that he expected to derive from
his project (2) 2. But Columbus was not yet discouraged, for he was a gentleman of great force and
spirit naturally inclined to undertake worthy deeds and signal enterprises (21) 3. 1492 was a
successful year for the Spanish. On January 2, Grenada surrendered which freed Spain of the foreign
power that occupied the city for seven centuries (35) 1. When Columbus was asked to march in the
parade at Grenada he took it as an opportunity to propose his voyage for a third time and

Summary Of Saying Farewell To A Faithful Pal
More Than Just an Animal
Sometimes the most smallest thing in your life can form an extensive modification and impact on you
internally and externally. Every new experience can make a person change; sometimes the change is
positive, and other times its negative. Either way there is no avoiding change. Animals are very
loving, life changing, and are great companions.
In the article, Saying Farewell to a Faithful Pal, by John Grogan, he speaks about his particular and
loving dog, Marley. Grogan shares There will never be a dog like Marley (Grogan, pg 149, pp 3). This
statement shows how much of an impact Marley had on John Grogan s life while he was alive. John
was impacted by this because he lost Marley s unconditional love and sympathetic attitude. Marley
was unlike any other animal; John learned to take advantage of the things that take care of you and
positively change you while you have them.
Another great example of unconditional love and positive change is an article written by Temple
Grandin, Dogs Makes Us Human. In this article, Temple explains People wouldn t have become who
we are today if we hadn t co evolved with dogs. (Grandin, pg 153, pp 1) This quote shows that without
the care of dogs, we would not have had the same perspective on our lives. Temple ... Show more

animals are really tenacious. It is amazing how much of an impact an animal can have on your

that lifestyle (McAllister, 2012).

Along with this the economy is in a recession, which means high unemployment, higher taxes on
every one and low incomes (Viking, 2009). With this most families cannot afford the prices that Ralph
Lauren has to offer.
Sociocultural factors are society s norms, cultures and values. This may impact Ralph Lauren because
the company has to learn the demographics of different areas. The demographics show the different
characteristics and attributes of people so companies such as ours can understand the buying power of
the people. When the company learns this information they can determine whether or not products will
appeal to customers and how many potential customers for these products might arise. Also with the
growing trends of people and different styles Ralph Lauren has to make various pieces to fit all their
needs.
Technological factors capture the application of knowledge to create new processes and products.
With new technology the apparel industry s productivity has been given a boost. There has been an
increase in automated machinery that has improved production and manufacturing facilities such as
Ralph Lauren Corporation (Viking, 2009). Now they have new faster computerized sewing machines
in order to make production go faster. Also new computer software has been a big plus for Ralph

Puritan Society In The Scarlett Letter
Puritan Society in The Scarlet Letter appears to be just as subjective and vicious as any school
cafeteria. If you miss a small step and spill your food or if you show up to school wearing the wrong
brand of backpack, then you are an outcast with the name calling and silent treatment to prove it.
Alienation is a common theme in many books and it is portrayed in this book through the behavior
and actions of Hester, Pearl, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale. Hester s isolation affects her both
physically, mentally, and emotionally. Although Hester is the main character, there are other important
characters that are affected by isolation, such as, Dimmesdale, Pearl, and Chillingworth. The feeling
of isolation is made clear by the characters, but it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dimmesdale is affected by isolation because of the way he was brought up, his intelligence and his
evident composure sets him apart from the rest of the townspeople. His choice in keeping his part in
committing his sin, further isolates him in guilt and self ridicule. Dimmesdale even tells Hester that
there is no hope for them and that he will die and enter eternity on his own, without her. From the
intense consciousness of being the object of severe and universal observation, the wearer of the scarlet
letter was at length relieved, by discerning on the outskirts of the crowd a figure which irresistibly
took possession of her thoughts, (Hawthorne, 56). This quote describes how Chillingworth comes into
town alone on the outskirts of town. His love for knowledge also contributes to his isolation from
society, to the point when he does not realize the future of asking Hester to marry him. He has one
goal when he arrives, and it is revenge. The isolation of Dimmesdale and Chillingworth bring them
together in a way, where Chillingworth acts as Dimmesdale s doctor. Even though they eventually
move in with each other, they do not open up to each other. They only

Character Analysis Of The Great Gatsby
Gatsby tries to present himself as constant and wealthy to Daisy. He tries to do this by associating with
well to do people and having parties while sparing no expense, as though all the money in the world
was his money. He uses the affinity seeking strategy of being comfortable and relaxed, even throwing
down his shirts to Daisy, who laughed with delight. He stopped by for tea at Nick s house when he
knew Daisy would be there, using politeness to win her over to him. Using a credibility strategy was
difficult for Gatsby in this case, as he wanted to show her that he had not changed and that the past
could be repeated, but he does mention how his shirts are chosen for him in London. When he is
called out by Tom as not an Oxford man, he self handicaps and claims to have only gone there for a
few months. When he is with Daisy, he never seems to self deprecate, because he wants to seem in
charge and flawless. He continues to carefully self monitor himself with her, as he was taught while he
was at sea. Finally, he used both influencing and self confirming strategies when he had a party with
her there by showing how he was rich, just like her, and confirmed his image as a rich man. Gatsby s
presentation to Daisy is only slightly different than it was in the book. Daisy seems entirely more
sympathetic, but also more thoughtless and cold in the movie, so the different portrayals will have an
effect on how Gatsby treats her. In the film, more attention is called to the fact that

Trope Of Shame In Lancelot And Guinevere
Throughout this course, the class has read various pieces of Arthurian literature. Each of these pieces
hold their own contributions in the genre and differentiate both plot and concepts. Most of these
concepts can be labeled as tropes, which are figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression.
One trope that was found while analyzing the texts was shame, or the painful feeling of humiliation.
The trope of shame is prominent in both the medieval legend Lancelot or the Knight of the Cart and
Natsume Soseki s more modern story, Kairo ko. Both sources emphasizes the shame that is felt by
Lancelot and Guinevere but in two very contrasting ways. These sources can also be compared to the
tale Sir Gawain in the Green Knight, which deals with shame a lesson that can be learned, rather than
a pitiful thing. All three of these Arthurian legends use the trope of shame to shape both the characters
and stories in their own way.
In Chrétien de Troyes Lancelot or the Knight of the Cart, Lancelot s first shameful action is hesitating
after his is offered to ride in the prisoner cart by the dwarf driving it. Chrétien de Troyes writes: At
that, the dwarf continued on his way without slowing down even an instant for the knight, who
hesitated but two steps before climbing in. He would regret this moment of hesitation and be accused
and shamed for it; he would come to consider himself ill used. But Reason, who does not follow Love
s command, told him to beware of getting in, warned and and counseled him not to do anything for
which he might incur disgrace or reproach (177). No matter what decision Lancelot would have made,
he would have been shamed in the end. If Lancelot have no hesitated, he would have been shamed by
the rest of the knightly community for riding the cart despite his mentality. No matter what, Guinevere
would have pressured Lancelot into shame for hesitation or not riding the cart in general.
After Lancelot finds Guinevere, the forbidden lovers have a conversation regarding Lancelot s
adventure. It it revealed that Guinevere knows about Lancelot s two step hesitation to get into the
dwarf s cart and is displeased with his actions. Guinevere replies to Lancelot s question of
displeasement with this:

Internal Conflict In The Black Cat
Black cats, animal abuse, schizophrenia, a fire and murder, Edgar Allan Poe s The Black Cat checks
all the boxes for a dark romantic piece of literature. The focus is taken off of the grotesque details of
abuse and murder but shifted towards the narrator s inner conflict. Poe s obsession with exploring the
human psyche is prevalent in this short story. Readers struggle to understand the logic, if any, behind
the actions of the unreliable narrator as he grapples with his own mind, or a supernatural force. Edgar
Allan Poe combines internal conflict and symbolism to express the theme of transformation from
innocence to evil and introduce a schizophrenic mindset that cannot comprehend reality from
supernatural occurrences. A descent into madness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edgar Allan Poe s use of symbolism in The Black Cat subtly hints at the supernatural aspect of the
story. The Evil Eye which plagued the protagonist of The Tell Tale Heart makes a reappearance. Both
Pluto and the second black cat have only one eye, and the narrator describes the second black cat s
solitary eye of fire (Poe 401) as he alarmed the investigators of the corpse in the tomb. The narrator s
claim of love for Pluto and the subsequent black cat developing into blind hatred and blame placed on
them also mirrors the protagonist in The Tell Tale Heart. The narrator blames the cats for his affliction.
Pluto signifies innocence, disfigured and eventually murdered by the narrator at the beginning of his
spiral into madness. Pluto s Evil Eye is quickly destroyed by the narrator, but is replaced with the
phantasm. The phantasm haunts the narrator, appearing after the house burns down and destroys his
wealth. The phantasm also appears on the second black cat s chest, tormenting the narrator with a
reminder of his first murder. The second black cat is the narrator s shot at redemption. His similarity to
Pluto and willingness to endure the narrator s abuse gave him a chance to redeem his innocence. Once
the protagonist commited the murder of his wife, the black cat gave up on him. Although the cats
represent innocence and redemption, the narrator s

The Secret Life Of Bees Theme Essay
In the book called The Secret Life of Bee s written by Sue Monk Kidd there are characters such as
Lily, Rosaline, T.Ray, Deborah, August, May, Zach, etc. From the list of characters stated one that I
admire the most and seem to have a lot in common in is Zach. I admire him due to his determination,
his want to be a lawyer, and especially due to the fact that he plays football. Well Zachery Taylor (His
full name) is as determined as they come. Living in a world full of Racist white men with white
privilege breathing down his neck. Zach will just keep on churning through everything. Small
examples of his determination are Law schools being explicit to whites only. Stating his only way of
being educated is unavailable. Some ways he tries to overcome this is communicating with Clayton
Forrest (Lawyer). He ends up learning off Clayton to learn tips and tricks. He uses it as an alternative
to school. Falling in love with Lily also shows another hump in his life that he overcomes with
determination. Knowing it s a white man s world and being caught with Lily will be a serious crime
due to the time. So for that he keeps it lowkey. Everything seems to go good for Zach until he is ...

UK vs USA
Similarly as with very nearly all domesticated clashes, the division between the homeland of the
united kingdom of Britain and what might turn into the united states of American was a movement of
insults, which adequately constrained the thirteen colonies to join as one voice against England. The
unity of the colonies became the method for various movements which later on lead them to their
independence. At the point when the thirteen provinces started their political solidarity was frail, then
again as Britain started to authorize more laws and duties on the pilgrims, their solidarity got solid as
they battled for their freedom. These four laws that made solidarity around the colonies conceivable
towards autonomy, also led them to form a congress. The Intolerable Act not just abused the privileges
of the American individuals, however they constrained all day by day living in the states. At the point
when this violation happened, the American Colonists knew their last end was to separate from Great
Britain. In March 1774, Parliament adopted (Norton), the first four acts that were passed to rebuff the
homesteaders for the Boston Tea Party. These acts that were passed damaged the privileges of the
American pioneers and individuals and set the stage for detachment. The first act was the Boston Port
Bill which was implemented on June 1, 1774, The British Government ordered (Parliamentary
taxation of colonies ), the closure of the Boston Harbor until the individuals of Boston

A clear similarity can be seen between; the opening scene of Hamlet and the Banquet scene in
Macbeth . They both contain the appearance of a supernatural being, in both cases, a ghost. He uses
the appearance of these characters to appeal to the audience in different ways. The response would
definitely vary from groundlings, the audience members that pay very little for their tickets and stand
beneath stage level, to the stands, higher caste people which occupy the higher stands with clearer
view of the stage and therefore more expensive tickets.
Firstly I would like to focus on the mood in these scenes. In Hamlet there is an atmosphere of tension

The presence of different members of the cast on the appearance would have also been cardinal to the
audience, in Macbeth just Macbeth sees the ghost, leaving the other members of the cast in
bemusement as to his behaviour; you look but upon a stool . This differs in Hamlet. Every person sees
the ghost and an attempt is made to make contact with it. I believe that consequently, the appearance
of this ghost compared to Macbeth s would be taken much more seriously and therefore more interest
will be created by it.
Time is another device used to affect the audience also; I believe both of these scenes to be set towards
the later end of the day or early morning in Hamlet s case. Lady Macbeth s quote At once, good night
shows that it is indeed late evening as she almost send the lords to bed after Macbeth breaks down
after seeing the ghost of his good friend Banquo. The audience would relate the darkness of evening
and early morning with a possible appearance of a supernatural being also. The appearance in
Macbeth would, almost definitely create more of a stir however, because of the lack of talk about such
a thing previous to its

The Operational Characteristics And Functionality Of A...
The operational characteristics and functionality of a variable speed pump compared to a centrifugal
pump. Sultan aljulaud Instructor: Joseph P. Ruane ME323: Fluid Mechanics Laboratory 12 08 2015
Abstract Pumps and its functions are a necessity in industries and homes nowadays. Buildings and
lands with distinct topographical characteristics need pumps to provide water to users. The basic
function of a pump is to transfer liquid from a low pressure area to a higher one. Without the
application of a pump, it is impossible to move a liquid to a high pressure zone because of the force
that prevents the liquid to move. The old cliché goes that water, or liquid, seeks its own level. This can
only be countered by means of a pump. There are different types of pump that facilitate this operation.
In this paper, we are concerned with centrifugal pump and pumps applied with variable speed drive.
How it works and which one is more applicable, whether in homes or industries, is the aim of this
essay. A variable speed pump is operated by a circuit consisting of a rectifier that converts alternating
current (AC) to direct current (DC), and another circuit known as inverter circuit to transform the DC
into a different version of the AC. Then, the AC produced by the inverter controls the speed of an
electric motor. This is the operation of the variable frequency drive (VFD) which is also known as
variable speed drive (VSD). By controlling the speed of the centrifugal pump

Sarah Baartman And Contemporary Society
Sarah Baartman and Contemporary Society Sarah Saartje Baartman stands as an historic symbol of the
racial injustices and sexual exploitation of African American women. Baartman is a female from
South Africa whose body shape became a fascination in western society. Her ample hips and large
buttocks were not idealized, but seen as savage, deviant, and apelike. In Europe, during the 19th
century, she became an object that was exhibited in freak shows under the name of Hottentot Venus.
Hottentot was the face of the inhumane performances that abrogated her basic human rights. Not only
was Baartman used for entertainment purposes, but she also became a subject for scientific studies.

The Healthcare Industry of America: An investigative look at HMO s
It s no secret that Health Maintenance Organizations, known as HMO s, have made healthcare
affordable for many Americans, but at what risks? Most employers offer some type of health care plan
that is an HMO. Let s face it, given the choice among insurance coverage through your employer, in
which he pays half the costs, or acquiring private insurance coverage outside your employer, most
Americans choose to go with employer provided HMO s. Why then, has there been so much
controversy with HMO s?
An HMO is an organization whereby the subscriber, or patient, is allowed to choose a medical
provider from a list of doctors within a certain medical group. Each physician ... Show more content

This process could take weeks due to cumbersome paperwork and the limited number of specialist per
each group or health plan. Again, many doctors only accept these plans to supplement their practices.
It is common for them to stop accepting your HMO after only a few years which leaves the patient a
choice of either paying cash, or changing doctors or insurance companies. One can see why this might
be a frustrating process.
Managed care reduces cost by keeping a pool of doctors and specialist to a minimum, and at the same
time keeping the volume of patients high. This often means that a patient may not receive the same
amount of attention and care as they should, or were accustomed to. Consumers have long grumbled
that HMO s have done too much too keep health costs down by stinting on patient care.(1).
Healthcare expenditures have more than doubled since 1965. Americans spend over a trillion dollars a
year on health care. (2). As of 1996, 110 million Americans were enrolled in HMO s. More than three
fourths of all individuals in HMO s are covered by job based insurance. More than 13 million
Medicaid recipients have been put into managed care plans. Managed care and HMO s have been the
subject of many negative stories in the press and are constantly being charged with endangering the
health and lives of their enrollees. As a result, congressional hearing, state, and federal regulation, and

Lack Of Education In Pakistan
The future successes of a nation heavily depend on the way the nation grows, shapes, and teaches their
children. Pakistan has no foreseeable success in their future because they do not invest in their
children s education. In many countries, such as the United States, it is against the law for children to
not attend school. In Pakistan, there is no such law requiring children to be formally educated. The
lack of education of Pakistani youth today creates issues which will inevitably plague Pakistani
citizens tomorrow. Pakistan has had many issues over the years regarding the education of Pakistan s
children as seen through poverty, gendered roles, and terrorism. Upon the foundation of Pakistan,
people had hoped education would one of the most significant focuses of the new government.
However, the government did not focus on the central issue of education. Instead, constant conflict
with India over Kashmir has been a primary concern which the Pakistani government has dealt with
over the years. The Taliban and their threat of destabilizing the already unstable republic have also
been a major presence in the government s mind. Pakistan has never been able to focus on aiding its
people due to constant warfare and national security concerns. As a result, Pakistan does not regulate
or assist in the education of its children. Without government support, education is also harmed by
other factors, such as the extreme poverty many Pakistani families face. Many Pakistani families

Solid waste like bags, foam, and other items dumped into the oceans from land or by ships at sea are
frequently consumed, with often fatal effects, by marine mammals, fish, and birds that mistake it for
food.
Ocean currents corral trillions of decomposing plastic items and other trash into gigantic, swirling
garbage patches (Pacific Trash Vortex)
Fish and birds could be harmed from accidentally eating the plastic particles, or absorbing substances
that leach out into the water. The main problem is the accessibility to freshwater organisms that can be
easily confused as natural food.
IV Pollution Facts:
The average American will throw away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year.
8% of the world s oil is used for plastic production.
Plastic in the ocean breaks down into such small segments that pieces of plastic from a one liter bottle
could end up on every mile of beach throughout the world.
Approximately 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. That s more than
1,200 bags per US resident, per year.
80% of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land.
Estimated in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of floating plastic.
Estimated that over 70,000 chemicals are used in industrial compounds, pesticides, pharmaceuticals,
food additives, and other purposes. That total

The Effect Of Sleep On The Regulation Of Emotional...
Introduction The goal of this study was to investigate the role of sleep in the regulation of emotional
reactivity and mood, and in particular the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The research team
led by Rosales Lagarde measured the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD) by evaluating subjective
responses to frustration and aversive stimuli. It was found that coping skills and emotional regulatory
abilities were decreased along with decision making skills following REM sleep disturbances. It was
also found that the subjects that experienced disturbances in REM sleep displayed a greater degree of
impulsiveness when faced with a risky decision and favored utilitarian judgments. The data was
collected using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) imaging of the brain during the various
stages of the experiment, and during the administration of the Emotional Reactivity Task. It was found
that there is a greater and longer lasting activation of the amygdala while viewing negative stimuli,
and specifically following TSD. This study was based on previous research that suggests that REM
sleep plays a significant role in emotional regulation, as brain areas associated with emotion are
specifically activated during REM sleep cycles. These include the amygdaloid complex, medial and
orbital frontal cortices, and posterior association areas. Background Other related studies have
evaluated the effect of REM sleep in animals and emotional reactivity. It has been found

Tourism Policy And Planning For Tourism
Policy and planning directly related, despite being completely different types of processes, they both
confront the same issues, that being the overall future development of a destination. This essay reflects
on policy and planning in the tourism industry. Beginning with the purpose of tourism policy,
underlining why policy and planning is important, how it is utilized, and finally the benefits to tourism
development. Utilizing examples from Kenya, United Kingdom, New Zealand, and Croatia to further
illustrate why tourism policies and planning are necessary in destinations.
Policy is government involvement in the tourism industry, which develops a framework around long
term tourism development, as well as daily implications that impact a destination. The purpose of
which is to provide stakeholders a board framework of economic and social benefits, generally
employment and income (Goeldner., Ritchie, 2012). Planning, however, is forecasting the possible
future of the destination developing a process, that limits the negative effects of a tourist footprint and
still allowing the destination to benefit and develop (Graci, 2015., Goeldner., Ritchie, 2012).
Therefore, together the purpose of both tourism policy and planning is to ensure that tourists are
getting a high quality experience, which still benefits the destination, while minimizing the negative
effects that impact the success of the destination, such as diminishing a destinations environmental,

Thalidomide Analysis
Analogs of thalidomide
Thalidomide has three more different type of analogs, include lenalidomide, pomalidomide and
apremilast. According to the article of Prommer (2009), the three analogs of thalidomide is produced
by the reaction of proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis and an element called TNF α which is
tumor necrosis factor. Because of thalidomide increases the degradation of RNA to product more
amount of TNF α and thalidomide can combine and active α1 acid glycoproteins with inherent anti
TNF α.
Thalidomide, lenalidomide and pomalidomide are the mechanism of multiple myeloma (MM) and
work together as a TLP. They can increase the amount of activity in T cell and anti the activity of
cancer.Lenalidomide is a second generation of immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) and can treat the
hematologic malignancies. It is less toxicity while compare with the thalidomide compound (BioMed
Central, 2009). The function of apremilast is to increase the activity of PDE4 enzyme
(Phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor) by reducing the amount of the immune and non immune cell which are
called cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). In addition, by increase the amount of PDE4 it can

Alexander Pope and Women Essay example
Alexander Pope may have been the adversary of female behavior the extent of this has long been in
question. The writer s satirical style towards the women of his era is evidence of his opinions.
However, there are noticeable facts that generate a swaying effect on Pope s views and the meaning of
The Rape of the Lock. These details consist of the author s personal life and symbolism contained in
his mock epic poem, including the voices of Bella and Clarissa, which is an indication that he may not
have had the hardened heart towards women that everyone assumed he had. While any evaluation on
Alexander Pope s personal opinion will conclude with a questioning of who he truly was behind his
literary persona, a thorough research provides solid ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Beauty was of utmost importance and to climb any social ladder, a pleasing outward appearance was
to be achieved.
The Rape of the Lock does an excellent job of portraying this thoughtlessness that the women had
during the Eighteenth Century. In the mock poem a woman who has her hair cut off and stolen appears
to be an action that expresses hilarious sarcastic wit. However this storyline was not just humorous but
has a sad underlying tone owing to the fact that a woman in the Eighteenth Century would have taken
these circumstances to a serious degree. Alexander Pope expressed his opinion of women in a frank
and aggressive manner. As Elizabeth King put it in her notes about The Rape of the Lock, it styled
woman a goddess and regarded her as little better than a doll (77), this clarifies Pope s respect of
women during his time.
The prime example of Pope s opinion is written through his character Belinda, in The Rape of the
Lock. In the poem, Belinda is the epitome of loveliness and femininity. The qualities she possesses are
not of intellect or wholesome attitude, but the beauty she was born with overpowers any need for
intelligence. Due to this, a Sylph named Ariel who was once a woman of similar beauty and class as
Belinda protects her, along with the nymphs who were once too, of pleasing disposition in their human
life. Throughout the story they keep watch over her and Ariel guards her heart from being overtaken

The Most Important Part Of A Team
The amount of action happening backstage of a sport is really exhausting. There s multiple steps and
knowledge that has to be put in play. Coaches are probably the most important part of a team. They
are the ones that lead the team towards the main goal. One may think that winning is the main key to
success, but it is definitely not. It takes effort to be in a team but it takes a person with a lot of
patience, courage, and understanding to be a coach. Taking various actions like specific skills,
techniques and being an effective coach/ positive approach have a huge role in being a win win coach.
Sports can be traced back to 6000 BC. It was said that swimming and archery were first played and
the evidence was painted on caves. Baseball was invented in 1829. The first professional league was
formed in 1876. Later on the game of rugby became known as football in the United States. The first
game was played in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton University. Although, during the 19th
century sports started to become actual official sports. (C 107 110)
A famous coach that is still looked upon is Tony Dungy. Tony Dungy was the first African American
head coach to win the superbowl . Dungy was the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from
1996 to 2001. In 2002, Dungy went on and coached the Indianapolis Colts in which he lead the to win
the superbowl in 2007. His salary was of five million dollars per year, which is not that high for a man

Tao-Te Ching
Summary The Tao te Ching is an exemplary work of Chinese philosophy that talks about good
government and moral behavior. Although the author of the Tao te Ching is unknown, the earliest texts
attribute the work to Lao tzu (sixth century B.C.E.),whose name can be translated to Old Master.
However, nothing can be said with certainty about the historical figure. The writings of Tao te Ching
are considered the basis for Taoism, confucianism, and Buddhism. The term Tao refers to the art of
living, embracing an inscrutable, eternal Way (Tao). The Tao te Ching represents the creative forces of
the universe and frequently uses the imagery of the womb, and the shakti or the female principle ...

The Tao cannot be named and is described as being eternal. The teachings of Tao te Ching consists of
81 numbered stanzas of varying lengths which is in the form of poetry. The text supports variety of
explanations. The teachings of Lao tzu are the opposite of materialism, the pursuit for power, authority,
and wealth. According to Lao tzu, these weigh down the soul, which is contrary to its goal of realizing
the highest truth. His anti materialistic belief extends in his advices to the politicians of his times, to
be silent observers, and to intercede only when it is essential, and then also unobtrusively. The Master
acts and teaches without doing or speaking, lets things happen, knows when to let go, neither
possesses nor expects. Lao s political philosophy undoubtedly minimizes the power of the state.
Moreover, there is definitely no room for aggression, and asserts that the good and wise leader will
provide the people with what they need and not annoy them with promises of what they do not need.
Lao tzu believes that the leader allows the people to achieve good things for themselves by keeping
people unawares that they are being ruled. He believed that one can be a good leader only when one
learns to follow the Tao. He remarks that the eternal way is the

Education Reform
Throughout history, reforms look differently based on the motivations of the reformers ( Education
Reform, n.d.). Educational reform consists of changes that are made in public education ( Education
Reform, n.d.). Education reform involves any and all changes in the way a school or school district
functions, from teaching methods and any administrative processes. Educational reform is used as an
ancillary for needed economic changes in the United States ( Education Reform, n.d.). Education
reformers want to have curriculum standards tied to test scores ( Education Reform, n.d.). Many
reformers have focused on changing society by reforming education on more humanistic, scientific,
and even democratic philosophies ( Education Reform, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the funding is not available then the reform becomes a burden as opposed to an aid (Chen, 2015).
The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) estimated that the program would
cost $7 billion dollars over a seven year period in order for all states to develop and implement the
testing programs outlined in the NCLB Act (Chen, 2015). However, the NCLB budget only authorized
$400 million dollars to go towards helping the states design and implement the tests which meant the
schools would be responsible for more than $6 billion dollars (Chen, 2015). A second disadvantage is
that schools began to focus on reading and math (Chen, 2015). Students were not provided with a well
rounded education (Chen, 2015). Some schools cut back on science and art in order to focus on
English and math (Chen, 2015). Some teachers voiced that education is not really improving (Chen,
2015). They believe that other subjects were sacrificed in order for schools to have proficiency in the
subject areas that were being tested (Chen, 2015).
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) was the largest showing of irresponsibility from policymakers
(Rothstein, 2008). The implementation of NCLB narrowed the curriculum and has caused more harm
than good to the student population (Rothstein, 2008). Since the implementation of NCLB school
systems have focused on reading and math, while neglecting art,

There have been multiple studies and experiments done on this particular subject. Scientists have yet
to produce any evidence to suggest that sexual orientation is determined by a particular factor or

when its comes to sexual orientation . If someone can truly change or choose if they are gay or lesbian
or straight would it not be easy for them to just come out and say that they are not gay anymore?
Correct, they can say that they don t feel an attraction to the same sex but most of the time it wouldn t
be true. If people could actually choose color it should be easy to change this for the ones who do
attempt to do so. People who are gay or lesbian describe their attraction as something more than just
choice, it is a feeling, a deep attraction and just can t be turned off when they feel like it.
Conversion therapy is just what it sounds like. This therapy is an attempt to make a child straight. To
show them that being gay is a choice. conversion therapy is essentially putting out that It s your fault
that you re gay. You chose to live this life but, I can help you! I can rid these bad feelings you have

  • 2. Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy... Incorporating Tibetan Buddhism into Modern Psychotherapy As the world moves into the twenty first century, Western civilizations are witnessing a surge of new technology, ideas and economic success. Urbanization is spreading rapidly and Western society s push for progression is becoming more apparent. However, this obsession with advancement has begun to take its toll on the happiness of the citizens. Studies have shown that in 2002, up to 13 percent of U.S. citizens suffered from mental disorders and that this number has only increased since then (Rinpche 60). As a result of our push for new technology, more techniques and medication are evolving and being used in psychotherapy. We must, however, wonder if it is time to try ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prove the benefits of incorporating Buddhist philosophies into Western psychotherapy, I will examine three specific Buddhist ideas: the connection of experience and meaning, the idea of emptiness and the loss of the ego, and the true nature of the mind. In order to examine the benefits of incorporating Buddhist ideas for psychotherapy patients, we must first move past the common Western idea that Buddhism is too culture bound and religious oriented to be incorporated into Western societies. While many Eastern cultures do consider Buddhism as their primary religion, the philosophies behind the religious practices are psychologically based (Michalon 203). The Dalai Lama, one of the Buddhists primary religious leaders, agreed to this when he sad, It is possible for people to adopt various Buddhist meditative techniques or mental training without being a Buddhist (Gay 172). It is of no threat to the religion of any psychotherapy patient to be able to understand and incorporate Buddhist ideas into his or her way of life. In order to progress to a happier lifestyle, we must be able to open our minds to examine other philosophies and how we may benefit from them. Tibetan Buddhism offers a very philosophical approach to a happier and more compassionate way of thinking. • 3. San Joaquin River Valley The San Joaquin River Valley Project represents a comprehensive long term effort to restore the flow of the San Joaquin River. After reading the article, River Plan Too Fishy for my Taste Buds by Bill McEwen I chose and decided to use this article because it has plenty of reasonable facts. Bill McEwen emerged as veteran journalist who has worked in various positions for the Bee since 1980. He grew up in the community and knows how everything works. The article McEwen wrote operated and published in the Fresno Bee in March 6, 2015 in a city surrounded by farms. After the approval of the project they have prepared for it and since then they have had a lot of successes. One of the successes appeared as the salmon experiment, 1,200 salmon got released for the first time in the river and over 40% of these fish successfully migrated 150 miles downstream of the river. The project will cost approximately 892 million dollars with an additional 188 million dollars in levee improvements. The followers of this project believe that the money has continued well spend but not necessarily true. The project continues in the process, but it has displayed working characteristics for some of the salmon s migration to different parts of the river. The current drought California suffers affected the project since it caused a delay. Farmers and near residents think the project needs reevaluation to put priorities first. Since California expects El Nino projections appear to affect the San Joaquin Project since we would get more water and easier to continue the project. After reading multiple articles and gathering research my viewpoint of this plan does not change. I believe California shouldn t waste the money they have to solve simple problems when they have bigger problems to solve. Restoring the river affects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Wilkie Collins The Moonstone Throughout Wilkie Collins The Moonstone, the characters are presented with various religious beliefs. Three prime examples are Gabriel Betteredge, Miss Clack and the unnamed Hindus. Each has their own way of going about celebrating their religion, and through each character Collins reveals his personal feelings about their religions and the way they go about being religious. The first narrator is Gabriel Betteredge. Throughout the whole of his narrative, Betteredge does refer to God with a capital G, enforcing his beliefs. In comparison to some other characters, however, Betteredge does not rely wholly on the Bible for guidance. He instead relies on Robinson Crusoe for all his advice. In Chapter XXI, however, he does admit to being an average good Christian, when you don t push my Christianity too far (Collins 200). A search of the iBooks edition of The Moonstone reveals that in his narrative alone, Betteredge refers to Robinson Crusoe a total of 25 times, and the Bible, in comparison is mentioned once, and the Bible in question is not even in Gabriel s possession. These 25 mentions of Robinson Crusoe do not include those in the narratives from the other chroniclers. Another point on Betteredge s Crusoe addiction can be found in Ezra Jennings narrative when it is revealed that Jennings has only read Betteredge s prized book once, as a child: Sir. He said gravely, there are great allowances to be made for a man that has not read Robinson Crusoe since he was a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Types Of Investments And Bonds Introduction This paper will examine two basic types of investments; stock and bonds, from an investor s perspective highlighting the advantages and disadvantages between common stock (equity) and corporate bonds (debt). Webster Dictionary defines investment as the outlay of money usually for income or profit usually in a tangible asset such as property . With both stocks and bonds, the only thing tangible is a simple piece of paper, a certificate. On the surface, these certificates may seem the same, however there is a very important fundamental difference. Owning a stock certificate is evidence of being a shareholder; hence money is exchanged for a portion of ownership in a company. A bond certificate, on the other hand, represents a contract and evidence of giving a loan to a company. Stocks are considered equity investments and bonds debt investments. This key difference brings its own set of pros and cons to each of these types of investment and affects their level of risk and return. The Advantages of Stocks Corporations issue both stocks and bonds to raise capital to purchase land, equipment, building, or even pay off debt. However, there are several advantages to investors to purchase a stock in a corporation over bonds. First, when you purchase a share of stock you essentially become a part owner in the company. With this ownership comes special privileges, such as the right to vote on who sits on the board of directors and on matters that could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Nuclear War Research Paper Instate violence has decreased in recent decades when it comes to nuclear war, but small arms war is still wide spread. More wars have had the use of guns than the use of nuclear weapons. More people have been killed in wars because of guns than because of nuclear weapons. However, more people can be killed in an instant by nuclear weapons whereas when you use a gun, more people can be killed in a span of a few months. It is also easier and cheaper to get a gun than it is to make and use a nuclear weapon. Terrorists are scary with a gun or a box cutter, but imagining ISIS or Al Qaeda with a nuclear weapon would cause the utmost terror across America. Liberalists and their conflicts are driven by issues like scarcity and survivability. An example would be Hugo Chavez s regime in Venezuela. They fight over access to resources or control of the government. Realists believe that you cannot trust anyone in an anarchic society. Problems with realistic theory lay on factors of offensive and defensive advantage and the ability to tell the difference between those two. Some examples would be WWI and the use of the machine gun and how no one would think that Canada and the United States ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 8. The Voyage of Christopher Columbus American History I 07/08/05 Christopher Columbus Voyage to North America Spanish exploration first began with a series of revolutions. First, the Commercial Revolution generated economic stability. Second, the Intellectual Revolution generated interest in the Earth s composition and the pursuit of exploration. Europe then called for a political revolution to end the disorganized and disorderly rule of its government. This revolution returned order and stability to the government and renewed interest in exploration to search for national wealth. When Columbus made a friend in Father Perez, it was a turning point for him. He was able to gain support from converts who believed in his cause. Ferdinand and Isabella were harder to convince, however. They found little interest in Columbus curiosity as they were preoccupied with defending themselves against the Moors. Later in 1491, Columbus again appears before Ferdinand and Isabella who apparently liked and respected the determined seaman (38) 1. Although they had admiration for Columbus, his plans for voyage were again rejected, partially because of his request to titles and riches. It seems that Columbus gave but scant and unsatisfactory information to the commission, probably through fear that his ideas might be improperly made use of and he be robbed of the glory and advantages that he expected to derive from his project (2) 2. But Columbus was not yet discouraged, for he was a gentleman of great force and spirit naturally inclined to undertake worthy deeds and signal enterprises (21) 3. 1492 was a successful year for the Spanish. On January 2, Grenada surrendered which freed Spain of the foreign power that occupied the city for seven centuries (35) 1. • 9. Summary Of Saying Farewell To A Faithful Pal More Than Just an Animal Sometimes the most smallest thing in your life can form an extensive modification and impact on you internally and externally. Every new experience can make a person change; sometimes the change is positive, and other times its negative. Either way there is no avoiding change. Animals are very loving, life changing, and are great companions. In the article, Saying Farewell to a Faithful Pal, by John Grogan, he speaks about his particular and loving dog, Marley. Grogan shares There will never be a dog like Marley (Grogan, pg 149, pp 3). This statement shows how much of an impact Marley had on John Grogan s life while he was alive. John was impacted by this because he lost Marley s unconditional love and sympathetic attitude. Marley was unlike any other animal; John learned to take advantage of the things that take care of you and positively change you while you have them. Another great example of unconditional love and positive change is an article written by Temple Grandin, Dogs Makes Us Human. In this article, Temple explains People wouldn t have become who we are today if we hadn t co evolved with dogs. • 11. Puritan Society In The Scarlett Letter Puritan Society in The Scarlet Letter appears to be just as subjective and vicious as any school cafeteria. If you miss a small step and spill your food or if you show up to school wearing the wrong brand of backpack, then you are an outcast with the name calling and silent treatment to prove it. Alienation is a common theme in many books and it is portrayed in this book through the behavior and actions of Hester, Pearl, Chillingworth, and Dimmesdale. Hester s isolation affects her both physically, mentally, and emotionally. Although Hester is the main character, there are other important characters that are affected by isolation, such as, Dimmesdale, Pearl, and Chillingworth. The feeling of isolation is made clear by the characters, but it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dimmesdale is affected by isolation because of the way he was brought up, his intelligence and his evident composure sets him apart from the rest of the townspeople. His choice in keeping his part in committing his sin, further isolates him in guilt and self ridicule. Dimmesdale even tells Hester that there is no hope for them and that he will die and enter eternity on his own, without her. From the intense consciousness of being the object of severe and universal observation, the wearer of the scarlet letter was at length relieved, by discerning on the outskirts of the crowd a figure which irresistibly took possession of her thoughts, (Hawthorne, 56). This quote describes how Chillingworth comes into town alone on the outskirts of town. His love for knowledge also contributes to his isolation from society, to the point when he does not realize the future of asking Hester to marry him. He has one goal when he arrives, and it is revenge. The isolation of Dimmesdale and Chillingworth bring them together in a way, where Chillingworth acts as Dimmesdale s doctor. • 12. Character Analysis Of The Great Gatsby Gatsby tries to present himself as constant and wealthy to Daisy. He tries to do this by associating with well to do people and having parties while sparing no expense, as though all the money in the world was his money. He uses the affinity seeking strategy of being comfortable and relaxed, even throwing down his shirts to Daisy, who laughed with delight. He stopped by for tea at Nick s house when he knew Daisy would be there, using politeness to win her over to him. Using a credibility strategy was difficult for Gatsby in this case, as he wanted to show her that he had not changed and that the past could be repeated, but he does mention how his shirts are chosen for him in London. When he is called out by Tom as not an Oxford man, he self handicaps and claims to have only gone there for a few months. When he is with Daisy, he never seems to self deprecate, because he wants to seem in charge and flawless. He continues to carefully self monitor himself with her, as he was taught while he was at sea. Finally, he used both influencing and self confirming strategies when he had a party with her there by showing how he was rich, just like her, and confirmed his image as a rich man. Gatsby s presentation to Daisy is only slightly different than it was in the book. Daisy seems entirely more sympathetic, but also more thoughtless and cold in the movie, so the different portrayals will have an effect on how Gatsby treats her. • 13. Trope Of Shame In Lancelot And Guinevere Throughout this course, the class has read various pieces of Arthurian literature. Each of these pieces hold their own contributions in the genre and differentiate both plot and concepts. Most of these concepts can be labeled as tropes, which are figurative or metaphorical use of a word or expression. One trope that was found while analyzing the texts was shame, or the painful feeling of humiliation. The trope of shame is prominent in both the medieval legend Lancelot or the Knight of the Cart and Natsume Soseki s more modern story, Kairo ko. Both sources emphasizes the shame that is felt by Lancelot and Guinevere but in two very contrasting ways. These sources can also be compared to the tale Sir Gawain in the Green Knight, which deals with shame a lesson that can be learned, rather than a pitiful thing. All three of these Arthurian legends use the trope of shame to shape both the characters and stories in their own way. In Chrétien de Troyes Lancelot or the Knight of the Cart, Lancelot s first shameful action is hesitating after his is offered to ride in the prisoner cart by the dwarf driving it. Chrétien de Troyes writes: At that, the dwarf continued on his way without slowing down even an instant for the knight, who hesitated but two steps before climbing in. He would regret this moment of hesitation and be accused and shamed for it; he would come to consider himself ill used. But Reason, who does not follow Love s command, told him to beware of getting in, warned and and counseled him not to do anything for which he might incur disgrace or reproach (177). No matter what decision Lancelot would have made, he would have been shamed in the end. If Lancelot have no hesitated, he would have been shamed by the rest of the knightly community for riding the cart despite his mentality. No matter what, Guinevere would have pressured Lancelot into shame for hesitation or not riding the cart in general. After Lancelot finds Guinevere, the forbidden lovers have a conversation regarding Lancelot s adventure. It it revealed that Guinevere knows about Lancelot s two step hesitation to get into the dwarf s cart and is displeased with his actions. • 14. Internal Conflict In The Black Cat Black cats, animal abuse, schizophrenia, a fire and murder, Edgar Allan Poe s The Black Cat checks all the boxes for a dark romantic piece of literature. The focus is taken off of the grotesque details of abuse and murder but shifted towards the narrator s inner conflict. Poe s obsession with exploring the human psyche is prevalent in this short story. Readers struggle to understand the logic, if any, behind the actions of the unreliable narrator as he grapples with his own mind, or a supernatural force. Edgar Allan Poe combines internal conflict and symbolism to express the theme of transformation from innocence to evil and introduce a schizophrenic mindset that cannot comprehend reality from supernatural occurrences. A descent into madness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edgar Allan Poe s use of symbolism in The Black Cat subtly hints at the supernatural aspect of the story. The Evil Eye which plagued the protagonist of The Tell Tale Heart makes a reappearance. Both Pluto and the second black cat have only one eye, and the narrator describes the second black cat s solitary eye of fire (Poe 401) as he alarmed the investigators of the corpse in the tomb. The narrator s claim of love for Pluto and the subsequent black cat developing into blind hatred and blame placed on them also mirrors the protagonist in The Tell Tale Heart. The narrator blames the cats for his affliction. Pluto signifies innocence, disfigured and eventually murdered by the narrator at the beginning of his spiral into madness. Pluto s Evil Eye is quickly destroyed by the narrator, but is replaced with the phantasm. The phantasm haunts the narrator, appearing after the house burns down and destroys his wealth. The phantasm also appears on the second black cat s chest, tormenting the narrator with a reminder of his first murder. The second black cat is the narrator s shot at redemption. The Secret Life Of Bees Theme Essay In the book called The Secret Life of Bee s written by Sue Monk Kidd there are characters such as Lily, Rosaline, T.Ray, Deborah, August, May, Zach, etc. From the list of characters stated one that I admire the most and seem to have a lot in common in is Zach. I admire him due to his determination, his want to be a lawyer, and especially due to the fact that he plays football. Well Zachery Taylor (His full name) is as determined as they come. Living in a world full of Racist white men with white privilege breathing down his neck. Zach will just keep on churning through everything. Small examples of his determination are Law schools being explicit to whites only. Stating his only way of being educated is unavailable. Some ways he tries to overcome this is communicating with Clayton Forrest (Lawyer). He ends up learning off Clayton to learn tips and tricks. He uses it as an alternative to school. Falling in love with Lily also shows another hump in his life that he overcomes with determination. Knowing it s a white man s world and being caught with Lily will be a serious crime due to the time. So for that he keeps it lowkey. Everything seems to go good for Zach until he is ... • 18. UK vs USA Similarly as with very nearly all domesticated clashes, the division between the homeland of the united kingdom of Britain and what might turn into the united states of American was a movement of insults, which adequately constrained the thirteen colonies to join as one voice against England. The unity of the colonies became the method for various movements which later on lead them to their independence. At the point when the thirteen provinces started their political solidarity was frail, then again as Britain started to authorize more laws and duties on the pilgrims, their solidarity got solid as they battled for their freedom. These four laws that made solidarity around the colonies conceivable towards autonomy, also led them to form a congress. The Intolerable Act not just abused the privileges of the American individuals, however they constrained all day by day living in the states. At the point when this violation happened, the American Colonists knew their last end was to separate from Great Britain. In March 1774, Parliament adopted (Norton), the first four acts that were passed to rebuff the homesteaders for the Boston Tea Party. These acts that were passed damaged the privileges of the American pioneers and individuals and set the stage for detachment. The first act was the Boston Port Bill which was implemented on June 1, 1774, The British Government ordered (Parliamentary taxation of colonies ), the closure of the Boston Harbor until the individuals of Boston ... They both contain the appearance of a supernatural being, in both cases, a ghost. He uses the appearance of these characters to appeal to the audience in different ways. The response would definitely vary from groundlings, the audience members that pay very little for their tickets and stand beneath stage level, to the stands, higher caste people which occupy the higher stands with clearer view of the stage and therefore more expensive tickets. Firstly I would like to focus on the mood in these scenes. In Hamlet there is an atmosphere of tension from the politics of war. We know there has been a war, one is happening or one is ... The higher class audience would therefore gain more respect for Horatio and listen to his opinions of the ghost. The presence of different members of the cast on the appearance would have also been cardinal to the audience, in Macbeth just Macbeth sees the ghost, leaving the other members of the cast in bemusement as to his behaviour; you look but upon a stool . This differs in Hamlet. Every person sees the ghost and an attempt is made to make contact with it. I believe that consequently, the appearance of this ghost compared to Macbeth s would be taken much more seriously and therefore more interest will be created by it. Time is another device used to affect the audience also; I believe both of these scenes to be set towards the later end of the day or early morning in Hamlet s case. Lady Macbeth s quote At once, good night shows that it is indeed late evening as she almost send the lords to bed after Macbeth breaks down after seeing the ghost of his good friend Banquo. • 20. The Operational Characteristics And Functionality Of A... The operational characteristics and functionality of a variable speed pump compared to a centrifugal pump. Sultan aljulaud Instructor: Joseph P. Ruane ME323: Fluid Mechanics Laboratory 12 08 2015 Abstract Pumps and its functions are a necessity in industries and homes nowadays. Buildings and lands with distinct topographical characteristics need pumps to provide water to users. The basic function of a pump is to transfer liquid from a low pressure area to a higher one. Without the application of a pump, it is impossible to move a liquid to a high pressure zone because of the force that prevents the liquid to move. The old cliché goes that water, or liquid, seeks its own level. This can only be countered by means of a pump. There are different types of pump that facilitate this operation. In this paper, we are concerned with centrifugal pump and pumps applied with variable speed drive. How it works and which one is more applicable, whether in homes or industries, is the aim of this essay. A variable speed pump is operated by a circuit consisting of a rectifier that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC), and another circuit known as inverter circuit to transform the DC into a different version of the AC. Then, the AC produced by the inverter controls the speed of an electric motor. This is the operation of the variable frequency drive (VFD) which is also known as variable speed drive (VSD). By controlling the speed of the centrifugal pump ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Healthcare Industry of America: An investigative look at HMO s It s no secret that Health Maintenance Organizations, known as HMO s, have made healthcare affordable for many Americans, but at what risks? Most employers offer some type of health care plan that is an HMO. Let s face it, given the choice among insurance coverage through your employer, in which he pays half the costs, or acquiring private insurance coverage outside your employer, most Americans choose to go with employer provided HMO s. Again, many doctors only accept these plans to supplement their practices. It is common for them to stop accepting your HMO after only a few years which leaves the patient a choice of either paying cash, or changing doctors or insurance companies. One can see why this might be a frustrating process. Managed care reduces cost by keeping a pool of doctors and specialist to a minimum, and at the same time keeping the volume of patients high. This often means that a patient may not receive the same amount of attention and care as they should, or were accustomed to. Ocean currents corral trillions of decomposing plastic items and other trash into gigantic, swirling garbage patches (Pacific Trash Vortex) Fish and birds could be harmed from accidentally eating the plastic particles, or absorbing substances that leach out into the water. The main problem is the accessibility to freshwater organisms that can be easily confused as natural food. Introduction The goal of this study was to investigate the role of sleep in the regulation of emotional reactivity and mood, and in particular the role of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The research team led by Rosales Lagarde measured the impact of total sleep deprivation (TSD) by evaluating subjective responses to frustration and aversive stimuli. It was found that coping skills and emotional regulatory abilities were decreased along with decision making skills following REM sleep disturbances. It was also found that the subjects that experienced disturbances in REM sleep displayed a greater degree of impulsiveness when faced with a risky decision and favored utilitarian judgments. The data was collected using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) imaging of the brain during the various stages of the experiment, and during the administration of the Emotional Reactivity Task. It was found that there is a greater and longer lasting activation of the amygdala while viewing negative stimuli, and specifically following TSD. This study was based on previous research that suggests that REM sleep plays a significant role in emotional regulation, as brain areas associated with emotion are specifically activated during REM sleep cycles. These include the amygdaloid complex, medial and orbital frontal cortices, and posterior association areas. Background Other related studies have evaluated the effect of REM sleep in animals and emotional reactivity. It has been found ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Rape of the Lock does an excellent job of portraying this thoughtlessness that the women had during the Eighteenth Century. In the mock poem a woman who has her hair cut off and stolen appears to be an action that expresses hilarious sarcastic wit. However this storyline was not just humorous but has a sad underlying tone owing to the fact that a woman in the Eighteenth Century would have taken these circumstances to a serious degree. Alexander Pope expressed his opinion of women in a frank and aggressive manner. As Elizabeth King put it in her notes about The Rape of the Lock, it styled woman a goddess and regarded her as little better than a doll (77), this clarifies Pope s respect of women during his time. The prime example of Pope s opinion is written through his character Belinda, in The Rape of the Lock. In the poem, Belinda is the epitome of loveliness and femininity. The qualities she possesses are not of intellect or wholesome attitude, but the beauty she was born with overpowers any need for intelligence.
