Marcel Mauss suggested that there exist two distinct types of exchange in human societies: gift
exchange and commodity exchange. He also classified societies based on the dominant type of
exchange in their economic system. For instance, small scale, traditional societies are associated with
gift economy, whereas Western societies are associated with commodity economy. Mauss distinction
between the two types of exchange was widely accepted in mainstream social anthropology, yet some

In my high school business classes I had the opportunity to take many business classes but none really
caught my passion for the classes until my junior year in high school. I remember I took my first
accounting class and really understood the concepts of the class and keep diving deeper into the
studies of accounting. I was very involved in my school Business Professional of America, which in
short is business competition all over the United State. My third year in BPA I started competing in

Angie Thomas novel The Hate U Give is the story of a teenage girl facing racism in the world around
her. Starr Carter lives in Garden Heights, a neighborhood filled with gangs, when one of her best
friends Khalil is shot by the police, she is quick to know he had been killed because of the racism that
exists in our world. Throughout the novel, Starr is constantly trying to show the world why Khalil died
in order to get justice for his death. She does not believe he deserved to die or the cop who shot Khalil
deserves to walk free of the crime he committed. Through different characters, the author is able to
convey the message of one should not form opinions on someone or something based on stereotypes.
Throughout the novel, some characters struggle with judging people before they know their past.
Angie Thomas is able to get this across to readers not only through Starr, but also characters such as
her father Maverick, her friends from school, and even Officer Cruise, the officer who killed Khalil.
Stereotypes in the novel are one of the main causes for Khalil s death. The officer had killed Khalil
because he had automatically assumed Khalil was a threat to him. Officer Cruise treated both Khalil

at times, in regards to human behavior. With a humanistic approach individuals are assumed to be
naturally good and will decide to follow the most positive way of doing things, by either making
