2.1 Synthesis of 1,3 butadienes
Dienes can be synthesised from aldehydes and ketones using the Wittig reaction. The Wittig
reaction facilitates the synthesis of new carbon carbon double bonds at specific locations in
aldehydes and ketones (Bernard Ford, 1983). The overall reaction mechanism is shown in Figure 1.
Protocols for synthesising 1,3 butadienes from aldehydes and ketones have been established in the
literature. The synthesis protocol proposed by Greatrex et al. (2014) was used and reactions using
several aldehydes (cinnamaldehyde, piperonaldehyde, and 2 chloro benzaldehyde) were
successfully performed to synthesise the required butadienes 1, 2, and 3, Scheme 2.
The general approach involved transforming the aldehydes at the site of the carbonyl group. Use of
an appropriate triphenylphosphonium halide (methyl for cinnamaldehyde, and allyl for piperonal
and 2 chloro benzaldehyde) afforded the correct 1,3 butadiene. Deprotonation of the
triphenylphosphonium halide was achieved using potassium tert butoxide reacted under an
atmosphere of nitrogen. An observable colour change was observed on addition of the
triphenylphosphonium halide to the solvent, and subsequently on the addition of an aldehyde.
Reactions were followed by thin liquid chromatography (TLC), and the butadienes were purified
via chromatography (1 and 2 via column chromatography, and 3 via dry flash chromatography).

Amendo Maiuri grand vision was to reconstruct the entire site to its original appearance. He
excavated right around the walls of Pompeii, uncovering the cemetery as well as significant
buildings eg. insulaes along the via dell Abbondanza, the amphitheatre and the palaestra. Maiuri
used mechanical equipment to clear away debris from earlier excavations and to assist in areas that
previously had been considered too hard to excavate. As part of conservation, Maiuri restored the
walls and ceilings and erected roofs for protection. However, he was criticized for excavations that
were done too quickly with little documentation. Some excavated buildings were unprotected and
wall paintings faded without ever being recorded. However, Maiuri s great enthusiasm for the site
and the important buildings he uncovered, attracted many tourists and made Pompeii well known
internationally.
Following 1977, Fausto Zevi halted excavations and started focusing on conservations instead as
both Pompeii and Herculaneum were dying a second death due to improper excavations exposure to
natural elements. Zevi recorded the uncovered buildings and took many photographs, resulting in
over 1800 photos.
In 1995, Pier Guzzo oversaw many restoration developments.

It was also difficult to isolate the effect of YAH maps in way finding, since personal characteristic,
past experience of using YAH maps, educational background and familiarity with the building might
have influence the results. Therefore, the participant answered some question related to these
factors. There is opportunity to extend the current study by examining the questions outlined above,
although this is beyond the scope of this investigation.
1.1Discussion experiment one: How useful are YAH maps in solving a spatial task?
Using YAH maps in solving the way finding task could improve the timeperformance of
completing and estimating the task. By looking at YAH mapparticipates could get at least an idea
where they should go and which way they should follow. Moreover they could choose the shortest
path based on the map .The result of this study shows that the average time for completing task
from source to destination for Group A which could use YAH map are less than Group B(Table 4).
However, the difference is not too much. Additionally, YAH maps are useful for choosing the path
and estimating the time. Based on our results, participants in group A predict the time that they
need for completing the task more precisely compare to group B (Table5).

can potentially replace and be integrated into the bone tissue, for medical purposes. These elements
should be similar in characteristic and structure of the bone tissue, so that they can effectively
replace the tissue and help stimulate bonegrowth and cellular growth, in order to maintain bone
homeostasis. In order to achieve compatibility, factors such as 3 D polymeric structures within bone
scaffolding, cellular composition and many other aspects should be considered within all these
plausible elements.
After finding potential candidates for replacements of bone tissue, each element will be organized
based on their compatibility and traits that make them suited for implementation. Based on the
comparison of materials, we found that the bamboo was the most suitable candidate for the
implementation based on it s biocompatibility potential, biodegradability potential and mechanical
integrity.
