Higher education is less accessible for girls in India due to cultural and economic factors. Only 50% of women are literate compared to over 70% of men. Parents are less willing to fund daughters' education since they will eventually join their husband's household, while sons are expected to support their family financially. Girls face pressure to focus on marriage instead of their careers. Implementing merit-based scholarships and coaching programs for girls to enter higher education could help address this inequality by providing opportunities and funding without consideration for caste or ability to pay. Changing mindsets around the importance of girls' education is also needed to improve rates of female literacy and participation in higher levels of schooling.
